Peak Legends of the Pikes Peak
Region 1892 Small book: subtitle:
the Sacred Myths of the Manitou by
Ernest Whitney, M. A. assisted by
William S. Alexnder, illustrated by
Thomas C. Parrish. From the text:
“However uncouth they may be, the
myths and legends of early nations,
like the poetry of later, give the highest and truest exponents of their
characters, and preserve with a singular fidelity the very essence
of their daily lives, their fears and hopes, their assumptions and
intuitions. It is proverbial that the songs of a people are stronger than
their laws; and the myths and traditions embodying the sentiments
upon which national character, national religion, are founded, are
more powerful than the songs, which they inspire. A ballad of the
people, a bit of folk lore, may teach us more than whole chapters
of history; we can hardly understand history without such lights.”

Plume Early Silver Plume
Photograph c1890 W. H. Jackson
photograph showing the town
of Silver Plume. There is strong
contrast on this photo and all of
the building are clearly defined. If
one wanted to, he could find many
of these buildings still standing.
Tailings and cuts in he mountains for roads are clearly seen. Silver
Plume is a very small, old, rural mining town dating from the Colorado
gold and silver rush of the last four decades of the 19th century. In
1859 gold was discovered at the confluence of Clear Creek and the
Platte River near what is now Denver. The sought-after veins of ore
were part of the east-northeast Colorado ore belt running roughly
from Boulder, Colorado southwest to the vicinity of Silverton and
Telluride. It is believed that originally some two miles of overburden
covered the ore veins. Erosion caused by wind and water wore away
the overburden down to the upper level of the ore--just in time for the
mid-19th century prospectors to “strike it rich,” sell their claims to
mining companies, and trigger the creation of towns like Silver Plume.
Although gold was the original metal sought in the Silver Plume area,
by about 1864 some bright soul recognized that the grayish rock
everyone had been kicking around and cursing was in fact silver ore,
and the boom era for Silver Plume began. (Prag Collection) Est. $300 ~ $600 FHWAC# 26766

Lot # 4244 Colorado, Surveyors Field Notes for Northern
Colorado 1868-1881 These 17 individual books are the personal
handwritten surveyor’s records of separate Townships in North Eastern
Colorado. They are the notes of Deputy Surveyor Adams M. Faringer (his
name is spelled differently within these books, some as “Fahringer”.)
Faringer was hired by the Government via contract to survey parts of
north eastern Colorado. He spent at least 13 years surveying the lands
subject of these notebooks, through at least 1881. They cover the area of
Weld & Morgan counties from Fort Morgan to the north state line. Each
section of land contents are described. The topography, grass, livestock,
rocks, and towns are all recorded. Shows stage stops, houses, wagon
roads, types of grass (“buffalo grass and prickly pear” is a standard
entry), cattle, general topography, wagon roads, rocks, quarter corners,
etc. According to Doris Monahan in “sterling Settlement”, Faringer “was
ingenious for his improvisations for corner markers.” With rocks in
short supply on the open range, Faringer often had to result in using
piles of Buffalo bones. The types of corner constructed is discussed in
the journals. This group of original survey notes is a priceless record
of the land in its infancy before most whiteman intrusion. But this
record must have had many more survey books. These do not follow a
chronological order. 1868 (1), 1869 (7), 1872 (2), 1874 (2), 1880 (4),

Lot # 4249 Colorado, “The
‘Soapy’ Smith Tragedy” 1907
Jefferson Randolph “Soapy” Smith
II (November 2, 1860 – July 8,
1898) was a famous con artist,
saloon and gambling house
proprietor, gangster and crime
boss of the nineteenth century
old west. His most famous scam,
the prize package soap sell racket,
presented him with the sobriquet of “Soapy,” which remained with him
to his death. Although he traveled and operated his confidence swindles
all across the western United States he is most famous for having a
major hand in the organized criminal operations of Denver, Colorado;
Creede, Colorado; and Skagway, Alaska, from 1879 to 1898. In Denver
he ran several saloons, gambling halls, cigar stores, and auction houses
that specialized in cheating their clientele. It was in Denver that Soapy
began to make a name for himself across the country as a bad man.
Denver is also where he entered into the arena of political fixing, where,
for favors, he could sway the outcome of city, county, and state elections.
He used the same methods of operation when he settled in the towns of
Creede and Skagway, opening businesses with the primary goal of gently
robbing his customers, while making a name for himself. He died in
spectacular fashion in the shootout on Juneau Wharf in Skagway, Alaska.

Lot # 4260 Colorado, Special Motor Vehicle
Badge pecial Motor Vehicle Deputy Supervisor, No.
348. Copper center (historical coat of arms) with
miners picks, on shield and “Nil Sine Numine” on a
banner beneath. Tin shield had an eagle at the top.
Nil sine numine is the state motto of Colorado. The
Latin phrase appears to be an adaptation from Virgil’s
Aeneid where in Book II, line 777 the words “...non
haec sine numine devum eveniunt” are found. The
motto appeared when Colorado’s first Territorial Governor William
Gilpin asked the Secretary of the Territory L. C. Weld for a suitable motto
for the state seal. According to the story, Weld said: “Well, Governor,
what would you suggest?” Gilpin is said to have paused in thought for
a moment and then responded “Nil Sine Numine”. On November 6,
1861 by Joint Resolution the First Territorial Assembly adopted the
motto with the territorial seal. At recurring intervals, discussion has
ensued concerning interpretation of this Latin phrase which commonly
translated is “’Nothing without providence’”. Others say it is “Nothing
without God”. Merriam Webster’s translates it as “Nothing without the
divine will”. In the early mining days of the State, the unregenerate said
it meant “nothing without a new mine”. The word “numen” (ablative
numine) means any divinity, god or goddess, or divine spirit. Est. $200 ~ $400 FHWAC# 27626

Statehood in the
Making 1866
1) “Admission of
Colorado. Memorial
of her Congressional
Delegation.
Washington D. C.,
January 29, 1866.”
To the Honorable
Senate and House
of Representatives
in Congress
assembled. by John Evans (1814-1897), J. B. Chaffee, U. S. Senators
Elect for Colorado and G. M. Chilcott, Representative to Congress
from Colorado. (9.25” x 6”) 4 pp. Evans was a US politician, physician,
railroad promoter, Governor of the Territory of Colorado, and namesake
of Evanston, Illinois; Evans, Colorado; and Mount Evans, Colorado.
He is most noted for being one of the founders of both Northwestern
University and the University of Denver. His role in one of the worst
acts of genocide committed against Native Americans, the Sand Creek
Massacre, has become more widely known in recent years. 2) “Colorado
Veto reviewed [from the Washington Chronicle.” “The message of the
President returning the bill for the admission of Colorado to the Senate
with his objections is, in several respects, the most remarkable State
paper ever presented to Congress. In his anxiety to assign a plausible
reason for his course he has laid hold of the misrepresentations of the
opponents of admission and built his arguments upon them. It would
had saved the President the mortification of finding his statements
to be false, if he had simply assigned what everybody believes to
be the real ground of the veto, i. e., that the politics of the Colorado
congressional delegation did not suit him. Had the Colorado Senators
been Copperheads or advocated of “my policy,” no one doubts that the
bill would have been cheerfully approved. (9” x 6”) 7 pp. Est. $500 ~ $1,500 FHWAC# 27603

of the seventh General assembly, delivered Friday, February 1, 1889. Self

can restore the Par of Exchange and bring a Return of Prosperity.” Speech
of Hon. Henry M. Teller (1830-1914), of Colorado in the Senate of the
United States, Wednesday, April 29, 1896. Self cover (8 7/8” x 5.75”) 16
pp. Among the men whose careers reflect honor and credit upon the state
that has honored them, none has risen to a position of higher distinction
or left more indelibly his impress upon the history of the nation than did
Senator Henry M. Teller. His ability to thoroughly grasp every point in all
the great problems of the country, to look at any question from the broad
standpoint of future needs and present opportunities, made him the
peer of the ablest statesmen of America. Moving west with its boundless
opportunities, he became one of the builders of the great western empire.
Recognition of the important part which he was playing made him not only
a leader of public thought and action in Colorado but in the nation as well.
5) “Extra Session. Proclamation.” by Davis H. Waite (1825-1901), Governor
of Colorado, December 27, 1893. Waite was an American politician. He
was a member of the Populist Party, and he served as the eighth Governor
of Colorado from 1893 to 1895. In 1893, a municipal charter was given
to Denver by the state legislature that decentralized the mayor’s powers
into six different administrative departments, two of which were elected,
two appointed by the mayor, and the remaining two appointed by the
governor. The municipal board members appointed by the governor had
complete financial control over the police, fire, and excise departments.
Governor Waite tried to overturn the corruption in Denver in 1894 by
removing police and fire commissioners that he thought were shielding
the gamblers and prostitutes. The officials refused to leave their positions
and were quickly joined by others who felt their jobs were threatened.
They barricaded themselves in City Hall, and the state militia were sent
to remove them. Federal troops were called in from nearby Fort Logan
to intervene and quell the civil strife. Eventually Governor Waite agreed
to withdraw the militia and allow the Colorado Supreme Court to decide
the case. The court ruled that the governor had authority to replace the
commissioners, but he was reprimanded for bringing in the militia, in what
became known as the “City Hall War”. Self cover (9.25” x 6”) 11 pp. Est. $200 ~ $600 FHWAC# 27078

William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) is best known for his photographs of uncharted territory in the American West, but he began his
career as a painter. Inspired by his painter mother, Jackson received
enough training to render him something of a master by age 19, but he
was drafted to fight in the Civil War for nine months. Upon discharge,
he found that he had lost his passion for painting, broke off his
engagement to a young woman and moved westward.
Jackson settled in Omaha, working in his brother’s photography
studio. A taste for adventure found him in exotic places with a camera
in hand, so he began taking pictures. Posing as a “missionary,” Jackson
captured images of Native Amercians. He rode the Union Pacific
Railroad, documenting the scenery for promotional purposes. He
even managed to win himself a spot on an 1871 geological survey that
resulted in the creation of Yellowstone; his are some of the first images
of the this national treasure. What makes Jackson’s work doubly
impressive is the fact that he made his pictures using three cameras
and some of the most cumbersome equipment, often necessitating
5-7 men and several mules to transport it all. An accident once cost
Jackson a month of his work, but he returned undaunted to the outof-the-way site to take the pictures again. Jackson’s later commissions
included the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 and an all-expenses paid
trip around the world, but he eventually turned his attention to
printing and publishing his and others’ work, netting him a huge profit
for several years. When his company went defunct in 1924, he took
on a final project: producing murals of the West for the walls of the
Interior building in D.C. Est. $300 ~ $600 FHWAC# 27061

1) “Curious things from the Rocky Mountains” by H. H. Tammen (18561924), Denver Colorado. The catalog features products from Tammen’s
company, with nice illustrations. (9” x 6”) 36 pp. Tammen was a maker of
souvenirs in the west, based in Denver. They specialized in rodeo, National
Park and western items. Harry Heye Tammen was born in Baltimore,
Maryland on March 6, 1856, the son of a German immigrant pharmacist.
He attended Knapps Academy in Baltimore, then worked in Philadelphia
before moving to Denver in 1880. With his partner Charles A. Stuart he
worked as a Denver bartender in 1880, and in 1881 they established
the firm of H.H. Tammen & Co. (aka H.H. Tammen Curio Co.) in Denver,
Colorado. The company focused on creating souvenir mineralogical
curiosities of Colorado, but also sold photography (including William
Henry Jackson), silver souvenir spoons, and the like. In 1895, Tammen
became a co-editor of the Denver Post, and thus even more wealthy than
he already had become. He was apparently behind the controversial
decision of Buffalo Bill’s family, to bury him in Denver instead of his
hometown of Cody, Wyoming. The H.H. Tammen Curio Co. was in business
until 1953, and possibly as late as 1962. Catalog is in good condition,
maroon soft cover, green metallic lettering. 2) “Scenic Wonders of the
