World Day of Prayer for Vocations Heavenly Father, Lord of the harvest, we earnestly ask You to bless our diocese and our world with many priests who will love you fervently and gladly, and courageously spend their lives in service to Your Son’s church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We pray that their lives may always be centered on our Eucharistic Lord, that they remain faithful to the Holy Father, and that they be devoted sons of Mary, our mother, in making You known and loved; may they all attain heaven. Bless our families and our children and choose from our homes those whom you desire for this holy work. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen. Please remember to pray for the sick in our Parish: Lucy Markowski, Bernice Ferris, Katherine Lemieux, Kay Heffner, Eva Maria Fuchs, Mark Doucette, Marcel Doucette, Marg Kehler, Elizabeth Nagal, Evelyn Green, Nick Green, Marie Gale, Anna Karikas, Sonny Weinberger, Marcel Laventure, Leonora Ludwar, Darlene Weibe, Leanne Wastrodowski, Jeanne Marie Plante, Zbygnief Staszczak, Peter Allison, Karl Zimmerman, Mary Ann Staples, Margaret Rauch The parish needs you before you may need the parish. Due to insurance and liability issues now common in our society, the Diocesan policy now requires two “qualified” adults to visit the sick, infirmed people in distress in their homes. This means if sometime in the future you would like a Minister of the Eucharist to administer in your home or, if you would like the parish priest to visit you in your distress at home then a second “qualified” adult must be present! Becoming a “qualified” adult is easy! I can assist you when applying for the Criminal Record Check on line that is free and takes 5 minutes. The training can be done in the home or in groups in the hall and takes 40 minutes total. No exam! We need “qualified” adults immediately to ensure that no parishioner will be denied Ministry service in the home when they are in distress. The residents of Riondel and Yahk must also abide by this Diocesan policy. I am available to discuss your options and deliver the training in your communities at your convenience. The Diocese Safe Environment Policy and more information on the Safe Environment Program are available on line at www.nelsondiocese.org or phone me, Gary Boyden, at 250 428-5755. It is the parish that needs your help now and with enough help the burden could be requiring one half hour of your time once a year! Please! Pastor’s Note As we get older, it is hard for us to sit in a place for an hour. I too am experiencing the old age problems of back pain and the like. Our weekend liturgy with the homily and music normally lasts for an hour. If at all possible for you to spend less than a minute more in the Church, we could respect and honour our prestigious and beautiful choir to finish their last music of the same liturgy. This can also help the pastor to thank and bless each participant at the gate, if possible. The fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday. It is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The scripture lessons are about Shepherds. Each year on this Sunday we reflect on the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd, devotedly taking care of his flock. The title of the parish priest, "pastor," means shepherd. A shepherd leads, feeds, nurtures, comforts, corrects, and protects his flock—responsibilities that belong to every church leader, the parish priest. Every one who is entrusted with the care of others is a shepherd. Hence pastors, parents, teachers, doctors, nurses, government officials and politicians are all shepherds. Since shepherding a diocese, a parish, a civil community or a family is very demanding, dedication, commitment, sacrifice and vigilance are needed every day on the part of the shepherds. We become good shepherds by loving those entrusted to us, spending our time, talents and praying for them. We need to use our health and wealth for their welfare. Parents must be careful of their duties as shepherds, becoming role models for their children by leading exemplary lives. Let us be good sheep in the fold of Jesus. Our local parish is our sheepfold, and our pastors are our shepherds. Jesus is the High Priest, the bishops are the successors of the apostles, the pastors are their helpers and the parishioners are the sheep. We become good sheep of our parish a) By hearing and following the voice of our shepherds through their homilies, Bible classes, counselling and advice. b) By taking the spiritual food given by our pastors through regular and active participation in the Holy Mass and by frequenting the sacraments of reconciliation, prayer services. c) By cooperating with our pastors giving them positive suggestions for the welfare of the parish and by praying for them. d) By cooperating as good stewards in the activities of various councils, ministries and parish associations.
