Faith opens the door for God to work wonders
in our lives. When Jesus went to teach in His
native synagogue, there was such a lack of
faith shown in Him that He was unable to perform any mighty deeds. Are things different in
our life? Are we accepting of all that Jesus
could do for us? Or is our lack of faith creating
obstacles to the wonderful things Jesus wants
to do for us?

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 5, 2015
In 2013, Pope Francis declared that a Year of Consecrated Life (YCL) be celebrated
throughout the world. YCL will begin on the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014.
It will close on the World Day of Consecrated Life,
February 2, 2016- Please keep those who have dedicated their lives to
Christ in your prayers
O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue
lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous
witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a
more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons
and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven
above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
FAITH IN
JESUS
CHRIST
Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a
double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors
and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in
the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful
signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no
faith in him because they know his origins, not
because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As
with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’ two
fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’
return to his native place, and further points out that
he is in the midst of his own family members there.
From the very people he expected the most, Jesus
received the least. In the day of the Gospel’s writing,
Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the
house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the
greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often
received the least. This is a good source for reflection
on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For
the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to
be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be
able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he?
Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its
absence?

In the sixteenth century, the Council of Trent,
which was otherwise devoted to liturgical uniformity, was
very tolerant of age old marriage customs. The Council
singled out “praiseworthy” customs and hoped they
would be retained. The Second Vatican Council likewise
asked for a careful evaluation of customs, admitting that
not everything about wedding practice is “praiseworthy.”
In our revised liturgy, all of the prayers consistently stress
the equality of the partners. Some familiar customs do
not match this insight. Often, the groom remains hidden
in a sacristy while the bride, accompanied only by her
father, enters with her attendants. This is hardly equality,
especially if it appears that her father is “giving her away”
to her husband. This is a familiar enough scene, but
increasingly couples are called to a different practice.
Symbols and signs carry and communicate meaning.
The challenge for couples today is to match the meaning
to the symbol, and for the couple to be authentic in all
they do and say on the day of their wedding. Having
bride and groom both take part fully and equally in the
entrance procession is exactly the kind of “praiseworthy”
practice we’ve been looking for!

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

by Virgilio T.J.
“We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess
your Resurrection until you come again”
Suerte Felipe
This first Memorial Acclamation is inspired by the First Letter to the Corinthians: “For as often as
you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes” (1 Cor 11:26).
Saint Paul says, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God
raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Rom 10:9). To “confess with your mouth” means to speak,
to acknowledge, or to profess openly and publicly. The title “Lord” is used in the New Testament to refer
to the risen Christ. “Jesus is Lord” is the oldest and shortest statement of faith of the early Church, the
Christian kerygma in the New Testament (cf. CCC 638). “For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus
Christ as Lord” (2 Cor 4:5). In professing that “Christ is Lord”, the early Christians suffered for their belief
but at the same time experienced deep joy in their liturgy singing and proclaiming, “Jesus Christ is Lord”
(Phil 2:11).
Therefore, the proclamation of Christ’s Death and Resurrection is a “profession of faith.” In fact, it
is not only the Memorial Acclamation that is considered as “profession of faith” but also the entire
Eucharistic Prayer. The Jesuit liturgical historian, Fr. Joseph Jungmann, says, “In the most ancient tradition the eucharistia appears at the same time as another more exalted form of the profession of faith”
(Jungmann, The Mass of the Roman Rite, 1986, II:117).
It is beyond the scope of this article to discuss the studies made by experts showing the parallelism between the Creed and the Eucharistic Prayer (cf. Mazza, The Eucharistic Prayers of the Roman
Rite, 1986, 159-160). It is sufficient to point out that the Eucharistic Prayer is a “profession of faith” not
only in words but also in action. What is being professed in words is also being performed in action. In
fact, the ancient sacramentaries of the sixth century and the Ordines Romani that describe the celebration of the Holy Mass between the seventh and fourteenth centuries use the word “Action” to refer to the
Eucharistic Prayer. The heading of the Preface Dialogue indicates: Incipit canon actionis (The canon of
the action begins). This is similar to what the director tells the whole crew and the actors in video or film
production. Once everyone is ready to shoot, the director shouts: “Action!”
Significantly, it is worth mentioning that today the Order of Mass of the third typical edition of The
Roman Missal mentions “Action” in Eucharistic Prayer I (The Roman Canon). In paragraph no. 86, it
inserts the rubric between the Commemoration of the Living and the Communicantes (Communion with
the Saints): “Within the Action.” The Eucharistic Prayer is the Action of the Church. Our social actions,
our apostolic works for the poor, for human rights, for the environment, and our Bible apostolate and
religious practices and devotions culminate and draw their source from the Holy Mass particularly from
its Great Prayer, from its Great Action, the Eucharistic Prayer.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW?
The important impact of fathers and father
figures on children
Whether you’ve seen a child light up when you
encourage them, succeed with a little bit of
mentoring, or problem solve
after lending your listening ear,
it is clear that fathers and father
figures are a gift in the life of
children. While nothing can
replace the presence of a
father, many of us know from
experience the influence that
other trusted adults can have on the life of children. Children thrive when they have adults that
they can trust and learn from. For complete

We have a very good chance to stop this bill,
but we need your help TODAY!
Please visit www.AHardPill.org to send an email and/or make a phone call to your
Assemblymember, urging a NO vote on SB 128.
Why oppose SB 128?
•
Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide for the terminally ill, while discouraging it for the
rest of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and disabled do not matter to our society.
•
Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being
denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assisted suicide.
• Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide
rate for non-terminal people increased 49% after assisted suicide became legal.
Finally, please join us in prayer to stop SB 128
Prayer to Stop Assisted Suicide
O God, source of all life and hope,
look kindly on our brothers and sisters facing the end
of their lives , fill them with the hope of your mercy
and give them peace and comfort.
We pray for our California Legislators, who are considering legalizing
assisted suicide, inspire them to protect the lives of the elderly, the infirm and the disabled.
Renew our commitment to building a community where every human life is
welcomed and wanted, valued and defended -- from conception to natural death.
We ask this through the intercession of Saint John Paul II. Amen.
