SUMMER 2015 A Great Place to Live I Learn I Work I Play I invest www.facebook.com/townofholyrood www.holyrood.ca @townofholyrood Message from Mayor Gary Goobie As your Mayor, I’m delighted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer. I also want to welcome all visitors to our town, and former residents who are home to spend time with family & friends. We hope you take in all the summer festivities and leave with fond and long-lasting memories of your visit. Again this summer, our Recreation Department and Community Events Committee have an abundance of activities planned for the whole family. If you wish to volunteer in the Town, simply call the Town Office or speak with one of our committee members. For our new residents, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get involved with the community and meet new friends. We’d love to have you on board! SquidFest 27 (July 15-19) is fast approaching, and our committee has lots of activities in store for the whole family to enjoy. There’s truly something for everyone! A schedule of events will be mailed to each household and posted on the new and improved www.SquidFest.ca. The “famous” Beach Party is promising to be another huge success featuring the popular bands Shanneyganock, The Navigators & Rum Ragged. A beautiful fireworks display will illuminate Holyrood Harbour and there’ll be lots of other family events throughout the Town. Camp A’hoy will certainly keep all the children busy throughout the summer. As well, the Recreation Department is hoping to launch a new pilot program called Teen’s A’hoy. I’m sure our Recreation Director, Steve and his summer staff will have an abundance of activities for them to enjoy. For our Forever Young group, an outdoor seniors social with the St. Pat’s Dancers and the Celtic Fiddlers is slated for July 28. Another exciting opportunity is extended to you on August 13 with our summer bus excursion to the Ferryland Dinner Theatre. Again this summer, the Morning Boardwalk Group will be offering a daily stroll along the beach. Great exercise to start your day! That’s just a highlight of some of the events & activities planned for the next few months. On behalf of my Council collogues, I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our volunteer committees and our Town Staff for the great work they’re doing as they continue to make Holyrood a wonderful place to live, learn, work, play & invest! The library has a great presence in the Town of Holyrood, and has many programs for pre-school children, youth, and adults. These programs provide people with the opportunity to read in a supporting environment. As well, it provides an opportunity for people to take a book home for leisure purposes or to get the support which they may need to better their skills. The project allowed the library to replace the entrance system ensuring accessibility and safety for all users. The interior of the building was repainted to improve the visual effects of the Library. The bathrooms were repaired and modernized and a children’s room has been constructed to promote a welcoming and secure environment for learning. Finally, familiar children characters now drape the walls where children can learn to read in a quiet and comforting manner. This project is another example of how small nonintrusive projects can add to the services and infrastructure within the Town of Holyrood. These projects, while small in dollar amounts, create an opportunity to positively affect the important services that residents have become accustomed. This project of $33,000 has made a vast difference in the ability of the Library Committee and the librarian to deliver programs. The Town’s Economic Development Department continues to work with the local groups and organizations to improve services while searching for ways to support and grow small and large businesses. We continue to look for innovative ways to support and grow the Town to ensure residents have the best possible place to Live, Learn, Work, Play and Invest. Your opinion, thoughts, and concerns are important to us, please feel free to call or visit the office if we can help you and/or your group/business. Our door is always open. When you look past the surface, it’s teeming with sea-life large and small. Each creature has a story – and at Coastal Connections, we love to share these stories to foster a long-term love of the ocean. We sail out of North Arm, Holyrood in small groups to explore beautiful Conception Bay. We’re all about sustainable eco-marine tours. That means we strive to leave no footprint on our environment. We respect our waterways and the creatures that inhabit them. Our goal is to inspire awe and understanding about this wild and wonderful web of life – whether it’s through discovering shipwrecks, hauling lobster pots, catching cod, socializing with squid and seabirds or tagging sharks as part of realworld conservation research. Catch a sunset cruise on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or explore sand, sea, and sky any day of the week. We’ll send your family home with a boatload of memories and a new appreciation of this big blue world. Captain Jan Negrijn Our guests are in good hands with Captain Jan. He’s been in love with the sea his whole life. As the founder of Coastal Connections, he’s brought together his years of experience as a fisherman, diver, educator, heritage interpreter and research vessel captain to inspire people to care deeply about the ocean. He’s a gifted teacher who blends state-of-the-art technology (sonar, subsea cameras and remotely operated vehicles), with hands-on, active learning to showcase science and inspire people of all ages. Capt. Negrijn is also the cofounder of the Oceans Learning Partnership and the main supplier for its Coastal Explorers field school. This floating classroom delivers interpretive programs to students, as well as a professional development program for teachers. We can customize a tour for you. They get to pilot a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), investigate water quality in an estuary, dissect a squid, observe seabirds in their habitat, and pull up a snow crab pot. They even get to steer a 42-ft boat, and much more! How can groups get involved? Groups can charter our services and come aboard our ‘floating classroom’ for a ‘day on the bay’! We will work with you to customize the boat and shore experiences to meet the goals of your program. Our team of enthusiastic marine educators are on site to ensure that participants have a safe, stimulating and fun-filled experience. These young Coastal Explorers may get their hands wet, but this promises to be a day that they will never forget! Who is offering the program? You can fill these boots Join OUR Team You won’t regret it! Did You Know? No person shall cause, set light, or ignite an open air fire within the Town of Holyrood without first applying and obtaining a permit from the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department The Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department was established in the late 1960’s. Since the inception of the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department it has matured into a well-established, highly trained force of young men and women, who faithfully serve the citizens of Holyrood. In 2014 the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department 12 I responded to 86 calls for assistance and members strive to continue and improve every aspect of what we do for our community and its citizens. Today we provide fire protection and other services to roughly 2200 citizens in the Holyrood area. We also have mutual aid verbal agreements with other Towns in the vicinity. Here are some of the incentives for those who are members of the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department: Members of the department are not paid but receive a yearly stipend allowance for attending training, incident calls, and community events. They also receive a federal tax credit of $3,000 per year with 200 volunteer hours. Firefighters become certified in firefighting, hazmat, extrication, rescue, standard first aid, and fire inspection training. You will also take part in comradeship, socials, annual fire fighters ball, annual provincial training by FESNL, and much, much more. Equal opportunities for people to join our department. Here’s what one volunteer had to say about the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department: Every now and then someone asks me why I joined the fire department. I don’t have an answer for them; I don’t know why I did, it just felt like the right thing to do. I do, however, have lots of answers for why I enjoy it so much. It makes me feel good knowing that I am a part of an organization that is dedicated to the aid of people :summer 2015: Town of Holyrood when they are going through difficult situations. The comradery within the department is like nothing else I have experienced. They accepted me without any judgement, treat me with respect and I am proud to call them my friends. We also have a great social scene. We came together to completely renovate the old Town Hall and we often get together for pot lucks, darts, bbq’s, or just to hang out. The training I have received has been top notch and I have experienced things I never dreamed of. For example, I once went inside a flashover simulator where the interior temperatures exceeded 1200° Celsius. I think the main reason I joined is that I simply believe I am a better person for having become a volunteer firefighter. Having said all that, I enjoy being a member of our local fire department with the hope that you will find them out for yourself! — Matthew Simmonds, Volunteer Firefighter Why don’t you make your mark on your community – become a Volunteer Firefighter The Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department meets every Thursday evening from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Please feel to come have a look around and chat with the members. Applications can be picked up at the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department or at the Holyrood Town Office. Composting Composting reduces your waste by as much as 30%! Composting is a natural process that converts organic material, such as food and yard waste, into nutrient-rich compost. When we compost in our backyards, we are creating a natural environment where decomposer organisms can break down the organic waste and recycle nutrients back into the soil. • Add a small, covered container in your kitchen for collecting food scraps (organic waste). • Once full, empty into a Backyard Composter. Rinse your container each time it is emptied or line it with newspaper that can also go in the compost bin. • If you are using a Backyard Composter, place it in an area that is sunny to absorb and retain heat, has good drainage, and ensure it is in an accessible area that can be easily accessed all year long. • Turn the soil in the location where the compost bin will be placed to allow for proper drainage and the movement of soil organisms. • Avoid adding the following to compost as they may cause problems such as odors, pests, or unnecessary toxins: all meat products, fish & shellfish, bones, fat, grease, oils & sauces, all dairy products, weeds gone to seed, diseased plants, dog & cat waste, plants treated with pesticides, wood treated with chemicals, charcoal. If you choose not to do your own backyard composting- the Town of Holyrood has a Community Compost Centre at our Town Depot. So there is no excuse for you not to compost! Composting is good for the environment. Composting: • Helps us reduce waste sent to landfills • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions • Reduces pollution • Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Adopt a Spot We encourage residents and local volunteers to show your Holyrood Pride and take ownership of our local public spaces and roads by removing litter and keeping Holyrood a great place to Live, Learn, Work, Play and Invest.
