The following message is based on my own reflections and studies as well as on an insightful book with the irreverent title:
“Where the Hell Is God?” by Fr. Richard Leonard, SJ. I recommend this book for your reading.
Should We Pray for Rain?
The answer to that question is not as easy as it may seem. On the one hand, the
Bible is full of verses that encourage us to pour out our hearts to God and pray for things
we need or want for ourselves or for others. Jesus himself said: “Ask and it will be given to
you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). One
of the reasons we pray is that it helps us acknowledge our need of God and name what our
needs are. Our prayers also underscore the fact that God wants to enter into every part of
our lives and stands in solidarity with us in our joys and hopes, grief and anxieties.

However, the question I have is that when we pray for
rain, do we think God will send it only if we pray hard enough or long enough or only if there are
enough people praying for it? In other words, is our prayer meant to change God’s mind, to talk
him into something or to talk him out of something? Worse yet, do we think God sent the drought
as some kind of punishment for us? That is the mentality of people have who have said that the
HIV and AIDS diseases are God’s way of punishing homosexuals or that the terrorist attacks of 9
-11 were God’s punishment of the United States for turning away from him. Similarly, sometimes
people ask me if a current struggle they are experiencing is God’s punishment for something they
did earlier in their lives. Well, in all these examples, that is certainly not the God our Catholic

Church believes in or teaches us about! God is a God of love, patience and mercy, not a vengeful,

angry, and punishing God. God does not will earthquakes, floods, droughts, other natural disasters, diseases or anything evil. God simply cannot desire anything bad because God is love (1
John4:8)! Therefore, God does not really punish us! God does not cause evil but he does allow it to exist.
The thing is, some of the sufferings we experience happen because our human bodies, this world and the universe God
created – as beautiful as they are – are imperfect. As St. Paul says: “…for creation was made subject to futility, not of its
own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God” (Romans 8:20-21). Because of that imperfection, bad
things can happen to our bodies, to our world and to our universe.
Now, while God does not punish us, God does allow us to experience the consequences of our bad choices. So,
for example, if I drink alcohol until I get drunk and then I get into my car, have an accident and kill someone, that is not
God punishing me – and much less the victim; God is simply allowing me to experience the consequences of my foolish
choices. Do you see the difference?
Thus, the drought we are currently experiencing could at least partly be due to the bad
choices we humans have made by wasting our natural resources, polluting our environment, populating the wrong areas, growing the wrong crops, etc., and now God is allowing us to experience
the consequences of our poor choices. Or, it may be that the earth's climate is in a long term cyclical pattern, or there might be some other cause like solar flares over which we have no control. Or,
it could be the result of a combination of all these and other causes.
But, whatever the cause of the drought, the question is should we pray for rain? And the
answer is yes, by all means. Yet, at the same time, let us remember that God already knows what
we need and already wants what is best for us. Therefore, our prayer is not meant to change
God’s mind but to change our hearts, so that we might more reflect his goodness and therehttp:sd.keepcalmmatic.co.uk/i/
by transform our world. As Pope Benedict said in his first encyclical, “Clearly, the Christian
say-no-to-wastingwater.png
who prays does not claim to be able to change God's plans or correct what [God] has foreseen.
Rather, he seeks an encounter with the Father of Jesus Christ, asking God to be present with the consolation of the Spirit
to [the Christian] and his work” (Deus Caritas Est # 37).
In that case, our prayer for rain might be more effective if it went something like this: “Dear God, in the midst of
this drought, help us to realize how precious are the gift of water and the gift of the Earth itself. Give us the desire to use
water and all our resources more carefully and to avoid needless waste and damage. Help us to cooperate locally, nationally and internationally to use wisely our natural resources, and give us the courage to sacrifice our own wants for
the good of all.” So, yes, let us pray for rain, and let us also stop wasting water!

¡Todo Por Jesús! It’s All about Jesus!
El siguiente mensaje está basado en mis propias reflexiones y estudios, así como en un libro profundo con el título

¿Debemos Orar por la Lluvia?
La respuesta a esa pregunta no es tan fácil como puede parecer. Por un lado, la Biblia
está llena de versos que nos animan a acudir a Dios y orar por las cosas que necesitamos o
queremos para nosotros mismos o para otros. Jesús mismo dijo: "Pidan y se les dará; busquen,
y encontrarán; llamen y se les abrirá" (Mateo 7, 7). Una de las razones por las que oramos es
que nos ayuda a reconocer nuestra necesidad de Dios y a nombrar cuáles son nuestras necesidades. Nuestras oraciones también subrayan el hecho de que Dios quiere entrar en cada parte

Sin embargo, la pregunta que tengo es que cuando oramos por lluvia, ¿pensamos que
Dios la enviará sólo si oramos lo suficiente devoción o esfuerzo o sólo si hay suficiente gente rezando por ella? En otras palabras, ¿es el fin de nuestra oración cambiar la opinión de Dios, convencerle que haga esto o que no haga aquello? Peor aún,
¿pensamos que Dios envió a la sequía como una especie de castigo por nosotros? Esa es la mentalidad de la gente que ha
dicho que las enfermedades de VIH y SIDA son una forma que Dios castiga a los homosexuales o que los ataques terroristas
del 9-11 fueron un castigo de Dios contra los Estados Unidos por alejarse de él. Del mismo modo, a veces unas personas me
preguntan si un sufrimiento actual que están pasando es un castigo de Dios por algo que hicieron antes en sus vidas. Pues
bien, en todos estos ejemplos, ¡ciertamente este no es el Dios en que cree nuestra Iglesia Católica, y no es el Dios del que nos
enseña! Dios es un Dios de amor, paciencia y misericordia, no un Dios vengativo, enojado y castigador. Dios no desea
terremotos, inundaciones, sequías, otros desastres naturales, enfermedades o cualquier cosa mal. ¡Dios simplemente
no puede desear nada malo, porque Dios es amor (1 Juan 4, 8)! Por lo tanto, ¡Dios realmente no nos castiga! Dios no
causa el mal pero sí permite que exista.
La cosa es que algunos de los sufrimientos que experimentamos suceden porque nuestros
cuerpos humanos, este mundo y el universo que Dios creó – tan hermosos como son – son imperfectos. Como dice San Pablo: “…porque [la creación] fue sometida a la frustración. Esto no sucedió por su propia voluntad, sino por la del que así lo dispuso. Pero queda la firme esperanza de que
la creación misma ha de ser liberada de la corrupción que la esclaviza, para así alcanzar la gloriosa
libertad de los hijos de Dios” (Romanos 8, 20-21). Debido a aquella imperfección, las cosas malas
pueden suceder a nuestros cuerpos, a nuestro mundo y a nuestro universo.
Ahora bien, mientras que Dios no nos castiga, Dios sí nos permite experimentar las consecuencias de nuestras malas decisiones. Así, por ejemplo, si yo bebo alcohol hasta que me emborrache y luego me meto en mi coche, tengo un accidente y mato a alguien, no es que Dios me esté

mente las consecuencias de mis decisiones insensatas. ¿Ves la diferencia?
Por lo tanto, la sequía que estamos pasando podría, al menos en parte, atribuirse a las malas decisiones que los seres
humanos hemos hecho por desperdiciar nuestros recursos naturales, contaminar nuestro medio ambiente, poblar las áreas
equivocadas, cultivar las cosechas erróneas, etc., y ahora Dios está permitiendo que experimentemos las consecuencias de
nuestras malas decisiones. O bien, puede ser que el clima de la tierra está en un patrón cíclico de largo plazo, o puede haber
alguna otra causa, como las erupciones solares sobre las que no tenemos ningún control. O bien, podría ser el resultado de
una combinación de todas estas y otras causas.
Pero, cualquiera que sea la causa de la sequía, la pregunta es ¿Debemos orar para que
llueva? Y la respuesta es ¡claro que sí! Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, recordemos que Dios ya
sabe lo que necesitamos y ya quiere lo mejor para nosotros. Por lo tanto, nuestra oración no tiene la intención de cambiar la opinión de Dios sino para cambiar nuestros corazones, para
que podamos reflejar más su bondad y con ello transformar a nuestro mundo. Como dijo el
Papa Benedicto XVI en su primera encíclica, "Claramente, el cristiano que reza no pretende ser
capaz de cambiar los planes de Dios o corregir lo que [Dios] ha previsto. Busca más bien el encuentro con el Padre de Jesucristo, pidiendo que esté presente con el consuelo del Espíritu [al cristiano] y su obra" (Deus Caritas Est #37).

agua y el don de la propia Tierra. Danos el deseo de utilizar el agua y todos nuestros recursos con
más cuidado y evitar dañarlos y el derroche innecesario. Ayúdanos a cooperar al nivel local, nacional e internacional para
utilizar sabiamente los recursos naturales, y danos la fuerza para sacrificar nuestros propios deseos por el bien de todos."
Así que, ¡sí, recemos por la lluvia, y también dejemos de malgastar el agua!

St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive
Our volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul need our help.
In order to keep up with the demands of our struggling
economy, they are asking for donations of specific
items each month to help restock their shelves to better
serve those in need. This ministry distributes food every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00am to
10:00am at the Holy Rosary Gymnasium. Each bag is
identical and carefully packed with nonperishable
items.
This month, they need
the following items:
White Rice -1 pound bag
Pork & Beans-15 ounce can
Tuna- 5 ounce can

church? Looking for a way to transform your life
throughout the week? Energize your driving time with
some solid Catholic information!
Listen to CDs to help you learn and love your faith!
CDs will be available in the church to check out and
then return when you’re done. No charge!
You can help support this ministry by donating your
used CDs to our library for others to use or by making a
cash donation at the rectory. An E-Waste recycling
event will be held in June to help raise funds for this
ministry.
