Part II:
As the Director of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery at the MEEI and
Director of Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery at the MGH, I am committed to actively
building upon the excellent clinical experience for the treatment of head and neck
disorders at these institutions, while engaging in advancement of the Division’s growing

commitment to basic science research. I also serve as Director of the Norman Knight
Hyperbaric Medicine Center at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Currently, an active clinical practice provides the foundation for research and
teaching within my academic activities. The treatment of head and neck cancer with both
ablative and reconstructive surgery constitutes the bulk of my practice. Salivary glands
malignancies, laryngeal disorders and microvascular free flap reconstruction are areas of
specialization. Within this environment, there is constant exposure to residents in training
as well as rotating medical students. In my prior position in Philadelphia, I served as the
director of medical student and resident education. This included designing
otolaryngology teaching materials for each medical student year. I also served as the
pathway director and advisor to all students applying for otolaryngology residency
positions. As director of resident education, I taught, advised and evaluated residents at
all levels of training. These activities continue in my current position where I am
Associate Coordinator of Medical Student Education. I also am a member of the
residency selection committee, the resident research committee, and the education
committee and serve as one of three medical student advisors for the specialty at HMS.
I have been and remain active with instruction in continuing medical education
courses both within and outside the specialty of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck
Surgery. These include; instructional courses within the American Academy of
Otolaryngology and board review courses as well as courses for primary care physicians,
speech pathologists, nurse practitioners, nurses and physicians assistants. I am currently
directing the 4Th year HMS clerkship in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the
MEEI.
My primary research focus is in the evaluating of laryngeal speech following total
laryngectomy and pharyngeal reconstruction. This involves multidisciplinary assessment
of functional, anatomic as well as quality of life status. Numerous papers have resulted
from our previous research. Grant funding for this project was recently awarded under an
RFA from the American Head and Neck Society. Active study is underway at this
institution and beginning at others nationally. I am currently serving as editor and coauthor for an Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Clinics of North America on the
topic of ”Voice Following Laryngeal Cancer Surgery.”
I am also grant-funded with an investigator development award to evaluate
thrombosis prophylaxis with microvascular anastomosis in the rat model. Two projects
have been completed under this grant and two others are actively underway. My final
area of focal clinical research is in quality of life assessment by lay caregiver in patients
undergoing head and neck surgery. I am also involved in collaborative studies with the
Anesthesia Department at the Massachusetts General Hospital and with the department of
Molecular Genetics at the Boston University School of Medicine. I remain active
numerous other smaller clinical projects within the specialty.
I plan to continue this level of involvement in my current position with the
planned further administrative duties.
