OVERVIEW
Caselvecchio is poised on a spectacular hillside with
sweeping 360 degree views across to Brunello vineyards to
the east, the Ombrone river valley running below and the
medieval hilltown of Monte Antico off to the right. It is
expansive and unblemished, enough space and tranquility
and beauty to quickly erase whatever fatigue and stress you
might have brought with you.
This is a weekend and vacation retreat for a professional
couple from Rome. They were headed up to Chianti
originally, but found it overrun and instead came to this more
convenient and peaceful place. The work they have done to
transform the ruined original 15th century tower and the
more recent 18th century farmstead into a sprawling, gracious
home is thoughtful and complete. The elegant, traditional
interiors are marked by rich upholstery, family heirlooms,
portraits of ancestors and their own china and linens complete with the family crest. All the bedrooms are ensuite
and each overlooks the surrounding countryside.
We particularly like the very flexible and accommodating
layout, various clusters of bedrooms and baths well-placed to
ensure couples and families can enjoy their privacy. But this is
a place for gatherings and the owners have ensured you have
a range, both intimate and grand. There are so many different
places to relax outdoors it will take you the better part of a
week just to sample each view and level of refreshing breeze
to decide which is the best in the morning and which best for
enjoying your nightcap under the stars. Not a bad way to
spend your vacation, no?

Siena, although we agree you can spend a lifetime or two

leave a 'greatest hits' version of Tuscany for others to enjoy.
Poised between the pristine sea of the Tuscan Archipelago
and the geometric beauty of some of Italy's most precious
vineyard rows, you can alternate restful days at home with
engaging day trips. Vary your activities -- sporting, cultural or
food and wine focused in turn. Or mix it up to ensure
everyone is engaged. The pace is unhurried and the crowds
are elsewhere. You will be on an adventure of your own
making, to savor and discover an unspoiled passage across
Tuscany. At Caselvecchio you will find no difficulty filling your
days and then you get to come home to comfort and beauty.
In fact, you might just do things you haven't done in a very
long time, like falling asleep after lunch with a book in your
hand, letting your conversations go on and on or heading to
the village to buy vegetables off the farmer's truck. The
diversions here run to the sublime -- the refreshing pool, the
breezy terraces and the every-changing silent movie of the
sky, star-studded at night and silent except for the occasional

ITINERARY RECOMMENDATIONS
• Discover the under-the-radar wines of Montecucco with
tours at small wineries and tastings in their cantinas or in the
comfort of Caselvecchio.
• Get closer to nature and the great outdoors. Guided hikes
or excursions on horseback can be arranged. Self-directed or
guided rides will give you a chance to appreciate the
landscape with new eyes.
• Experience the natural thermal baths in the style of the
Romans at Petriolo, get there early in the morning for silence
and beauty, especially recommended in spring and autumn if
you come during the grape or olive harvest.
• Become a Brunello connoisseur with visits to Poggio alle
Mure, Castel Gioconda, Castello di Argiano (a personal
suggestion of the owner) plus other lesser-known producers.
• Monte Antico, Paganico and Cinigiano are quiet local
villages suitable for an excellent lunch. You are likely to be the
only non-Italian speakers there enjoying a traditional lunch.
• Siena is worth a day trip, accompanied by one of our
excellent guides. Your time there can be a mix of history and
architecture, art old and new, and of course a nice long lunch
break to recoup your energy.
• The pristine waters of the Tuscan Archipelago are an
excellent day-trip, to Castiglione della Pescaia or the sandy
coast at Ansedonia. We can arrange for an excursion via
skippered boat or you can spend the day at a local Beach
Club in the style of the Italians.
