AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AT MADISON MIDDLE SCHOOL 2013-2014
All activities are announced for several days ahead of time during morning announcements. It is
up to the student to listen for the day and time of the activity they are interested in attending. The
teacher’s name that is in charge of the program is always given so students know who to see for
more information about the activity.
1-2-3 ACADEMIC COMPETITION – Mrs. Roberta Weiner, Advisor
Teams of students play against other middle school teams across the country in a Jeopardy-like game of
knowledge. Students must attend practices after school before the fall and spring KMO.
BIO-TECH CLUB – Mr. John Mastrianni, Advisor
Students will become familiar with Trumbull Bio-technical School located on Trumbull High School
campus.
BOOK CAFÉ (LUNCH BUNCH) – Ms. Corey Dwyer, Advisor
Students meet during lunch once a month to discuss and blog about their favorite books.
BROADWAY BABIES – Ms. Lauren Brown and Mrs. Deana Saunders, Co-Advisors
Auditions are held (usually in October or November) for a play that is performed in the spring.
COURTYARD CLUB – Mr. Michael Curry and Mrs. Jody D’Addario, Co-Advisors
The goal of the Courtyard Club is to create a functional and beautiful space to benefit the local community
and ecosystem for many years to come. Students will be working outdoors alongside master gardeners from
the Long Hill Garden Club. Each student will learn how to identify native and invasive species; basic
tree/shrub care; flower bed maintenance; and landscape design. Students from all grade levels are welcome
to join. Students will feel a sense of accomplishment after they view the beautiful work they have done!!!
CHAMBER STRINGS – Mr. Matthew Holmgren, Advisor
A select group that meets once a week after school.
DEBATE CLUB – Mrs. Lisa Cerulli and Catherine Ciardi, Co-Advisors
Students will learn skills of effective argument, using evidence to defend a position, and the ability to
recognize and understand opposing viewpoints. Students choose the debate topics and compete in teams
against each other a few times during the school year. The Debate Club is open to all MMS students in
grades 6-8. We meet approximately twice a month.
DIVERSITY CLUB – Mrs. Nancy Yarmosh and Melissa Pytlak, Co-Advisors
This group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will meet one or two times a month to plan and discuss how to celebrate
the many different cultures representing Madison.
FILM CLUB – Ms. Donna Girot (Trumbull Community Television) and Mrs. Tracey Ormond, Co-Advisors
Students will explore the world of film by reviewing and studying the art of film making. Students will meet
throughout the year to plan, script, storyboard, shoot, direct and edit their own work.
GUITAR CLUB – Mr. Michael Curry, Advisor
All skill levels welcome. Students will learn about the guitar and how to play properly. All students are
encouraged to practice to improve their level of play. Basic notes, chords, and scale patterns will be
discussed. Dates and times to be announced.

JAZZ BAND – Mr. Rob Thornton, Advisor
The Jazz Band usually meets once a week after school. Auditions are held in September.
Interested students should see Mr. Thornton.
KARE –Mrs. Jeanne Malgioglio and Mrs. Nancy Yarmosh, Co-Advisors
Madison’s Service Club meets regularly during the year to plan activities for the less fortunate
in the community.
LITERARY MAGAZINE – Mr. Jeffrey Vance, and Ms. Diane Toscano, Co-Advisors
The literary magazine of Madison Middle School meets on a regular basis throughout the year; members
create a magazine titled Once Upon A Word with their own writing pieces.
MADISON MENTORS – Ms. Corey Dwyer, Advisor
A peer mentoring club in which eighth graders tutor other students at Madison. Students who need academic
assistance may join at any time. Madison Mentors meets on Mondays after school.
MADISON SINGERS – Mrs. Deana Saunders, Advisor
Auditions in early September for 7th and 8th graders only. The Singers have mandatory rehearsals on
Wednesday after school all year and perform at both December and May concerts, as well as, attend outside
performances and field trips.
MATH ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS – Mrs. Elizabeth Giamportone, Advisor
Throughout the year, several after-school math enrichment activities are offered (BAYER Solutions,
MATHCOUNTS, etc.). Dates and times are announced a well in advance of the start of the activity.
MODEL UN CLUB – Mr. Robert Reda and Victor Chaves, Co-Advisors
Open to eighth grade students only. Students will assume the roles of countries and organizations represented
in the United Nations as well as practice delegation skills through mock simulations. Club meets every
Wednesday after school in room 108. Start date is September 25, 2013.
NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY – Mrs. Cwilichoski and Mrs. Teixeira, Co-Advisors
NJHS meets every other month in the media center, dates to be announced. First meeting will be held on
Monday, September 23rd. There will be ongoing activities.
PANTHER PRESS – Mr. Robert Devine, Advisor
(Madison’s school newspaper – usually two issues a year, winter and spring)
PAL’s (PEER ALLY LEADERS) – Maureen Heifetz, Melissa Pytlak and Nancy Yarmosh, Advisors
Peer Ally Leaders is a group of students trained by the Anti-Defamation League to become empowered to
Step UP and act as allies rather than bystanders when faced with the negative or detrimental behaviors of
their peers both in and out of school PALs will work to share their strategies and tools with the entire school
community in order to help others act as allies in situations like mean behaviors, prejudicial statements or
bullying. PALs meet one to two times per month to develop their skills and deliver their message to the
whole school.
POETRY SLAM CLUB – Ms. Corey Dwyer, Advisor
Students in this club write original verse and learn how to perform their piece of poetry live. The club
competes in a poetry slam event in the spring, and the competition draws a great audience.

S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) –Mrs. Amy LaMaine and Mrs. Lena Payne, Co-Advisors
To promote, encourage, and educate peers on positive decision making.
SCRATCH CLUB – Mrs. Tracey Ormond
Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create interactive art, stories, simulations, and
games. No experience is necessary and all students are welcome to join. Meetings will be held on the last
Wednesday of every month in Computer Lab 215.
SKI CLUB – Mr. Rob Thornton, Advisor
Four ski trips are planned. Enrollment is limited and is on a first come, first served basis.
SPORTS CLUBS – Mr. Phil Pacelli, Advisor
Seasonal activities take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school. Late buses at 3:20 are
provided. Students are notified via morning announcements what the upcoming activity is and when it
begins. Students sign up in physical education classes and permission slips are given to them. Everyone is
welcome to participate, but no one is allowed to play without a signed permission slip by a parent or
guardian.
STOCK MARKET CLUB – Mr. Victor Chaves and Mrs. Catherine Ciardi, Co Advisors
What would you do with $100,000? Join the Stock Market club, and test your skills as a Wall Street
portfolio manager. This 10-week simulated financial experience is designed to put students on the floor of
the New York Stock Exchange. Students will have the opportunity to invest funds and watch their strategies
in action, speculating and calculating as they sharpen their critical thinking and research skills. Student
investors will use the news, technology and other media to recognize business trends while experiencing real
life lessons in math, economics, business and team work. So if you are up for this challenging and rewarding

STUDENT GOVERNMENT – Mrs. Jody D’Addario and Robert Devine, Co-Advisors
Elections are held in September for representatives from grades 6, 7 & 8. They meet regularly after school
to plan community and social events for the school year. The Student Government represents the voice of all
the students at Madison!
SUMMER READING LIST CLUB – Mrs. Roberta Weiner, Advisor
Students will meet once or twice a month to discuss what books might be placed on the middle school
summer reading list.
WEB CLUB – Mr. Marc Wilson, Advisor
Meets Mondays or Wednesdays after school. Students keep Madison’s web page current.
YARN CLUB – Mrs. Deana Saunders and Mrs. Jeanne Malgioglio, Co-Advisors
This club meets weekly in the winter to work on knitted and crocheted projects. Experienced crafters and
newbies are both welcome.
YEARBOOK – Mrs. JoAnn Tigner and Mrs. Mary Kate Metwally, Advisors
The yearbook staff meets on a regular basis until yearbook is submitted for printing. New Members are
always welcome. Attendance will depend on what role a student takes on the Yearbook Club.
