Membership: Savings at a Glance
•
•
•
NAHB’s 2012 advocacy efforts saved the
typical home builder about $7,250 per
housing start.
On average, TAB members saved $3,820
in direct fees to the home building industry
due to the lobbying efforts of your
government relations team at the Texas
Capitol in 2011.
It is estimated that each HBA member can
save at least $500 a year by taking
advantage of the discounted programs and
services.
Your membership in the federation gives
us strength in numbers. When you join your
local home builders association (HBA), you also
become a member of the:

construction industry.
Successful advocacy efforts by TAB,

NAHB advocates on your behalf in
Washington, D.C.
The impact of the work NAHB does at the
national level may not always be obvious to the
membership; however, the work it does in
Washington, D.C. is extremely important to the
industry.
NAHB’s advocacy efforts on behalf of members
in the legislative, regulatory, and legal arenas
saved the typical home builder about $7,250 per
housing start (both single and multifamily) in
2012. This increase would have priced 189,000
Texas families out of the home buying market. A
detailed explanation of the cost savings can be
found at NAHB.org.
Value of TAB’s Advocacy on Your
Behalf
Housing costs for you and homeowners would be
significantly higher if the association did not
engage at the Texas Capitol and before regulatory
agencies, relying largely upon resources from
individuals like you.
TAB’s Grassroots Advocacy Center gives you
immediate access to decision makers to support
TAB’s government relations efforts. Your
participation in Voter Voice enables the
Legislative team to implement a coordinated
communication and grassroots advocacy campaign
through email, e-newsletters and alert messages,
and where you can quickly and easily participate
in the legislative process.
•
With over 6,000 bills filed during the 2013
Texas Legislative Session, over 1,100 of
which were tracked by TAB, there are
scores of new laws that could directly
impact your business. Our volunteer
members and professional staff are
working hard to prevent any radical
changes that would make our industry’s
recovery more difficult. This continued
record of success is dependent on member
participation and input, and we welcome
your participation in the legislative
process.
•
For every $1,000 increase in the cost of an
average-priced home in Texas, 27,000
more families are unable to afford that
home.
Regulations will continue to be pursued by those
that would use them to stop or seriously curtail
development in some of the fastest growing areas
of the state. If these laws were enacted, it would
undoubtedly raise the price of housing and
exacerbate the current affordability crisis we face
to the point where thousands of additional Texas
families would not be able to afford a home.
For more information about TAB’s legislative
agenda and successes, visit the “Government
Relations” section of TexasBuilders.org.
Our Message
The home builders federation consists of three
organizations: the National Association of Home
Builders (NAHB), the Texas Association of
Builders (TAB), and your local home builders
association (HBA). Each works toward a similar
goal but has its own mission, vision and value
statements. You can find the statements for NAHB
and your local HBA on their websites.
Texas Association of Builders (TAB)
Our Mission
The Texas Association of Builders is dedicated to
creating a positive business environment for the
housing industry by addressing the housing issues
of the people of Texas.
Our Organization

Builders is an affiliate of the National Association
of Home Builders and has 28 local home builders

Texas.
Representing over 400,000 jobs and more than
$22 billion in the Texas economy, the state and
local associations play a critical role in providing
housing for Texans.
A Positive Force in Austin
TAB’s government relations program is nationally
recognized for its innovative programs and
legislative successes that have resulted in
significant savings to the home building industry
and, in turn, to the home buying public. The
association has defeated a long list of bills
potentially harmful to the industry.
TAB’s government relations team works closely
with elected state officials and regulatory agencies
in the development and adoption of regulations,
codes and standards for housing with the goal of
creating safe, quality, and common sense
construction standards.
