Homewood is running a competition to discover and promote South Africa’s emerging design talent.
Applications for entry are invited from all interested individuals in the design professions.
Entry is conditional on acceptance of these terms and conditions.
The competition brief is to design and create a ‘space’ of approximately 36 sq. metres (6 x 6) in the
Homewood Kramerville showroom, using Homewood furniture, fabrics and papers from Hertex, soft
good and rugs from Hertex, paints and colours from Annie Sloan, and a R5000 budget to accessorize
and complete the space.
Spaces may be any room(s) or spaces (patios or gardens) in the home, office or a commercial
environment.
Eligibility and Conditions of Entry
1. The competition is open to all décor, design and architectural students and practitioners
with no more than five completed major professional assignments.
2. Entrants must be over the age of 18. There is no upper age limit.
3. Entrants must be South African nationals, resident in South Africa for the duration of the
competition (now until January 2016).
4. Entrants must submit a brief but illustrative portfolio of the design work – maximum 4
pages, and a written motivation for selection of no more than 500 words.
5. Entrants may submit up to 4 applications over the course of the competition.
6. Preference will be given to early entrants.
7. Entrants must be individuals, or partnerships of no more than two.
8. Travel, accommodation, and set-up or subsistence costs for selected finalists will be borne
by finalists and not Homewood or any of the associated sponsors. With this proviso ‘Out of
town’ entries (non-Gauteng residents) are welcomed.
9. HOMEWOOD will determine the suitability and qualification of entry applications for
consideration based on portfolios and motivations.
10. Six finalists will be selected during the running of the competition
11. Irrespective of the date of entry, finalists will be notified of their selection one month prior
to their display tenure.
Conditions applicable to selected finalists
12. Once notified of their selection finalists will have one month to plan and design their space.
During this time they will need to:
a. Select furniture for display. This should be done in consultation with Homewood
Kramerville staff, or the nearest Homewood showroom. There is no limit on goods
that may be used. All furniture and dimensions may be previewed on the
HOMEWOOD website.
b. Select custom upholstery requirements using fabrics from local Hertex ranges.
Upholstery of items is subject to agreement by Homewood, Hertex and their
appointed upholsterer Belle Furniture. It takes approximately three weeks for
custom upholstery to be done. Fabric selection should be done in consultation with
Hertex Kramerville staff or the nearest Hertex showroom. Fabrics may be previewed
on the Hertex website.
c. Select any wall paper and rugs or soft furnishings requirements from Hertex. This
selection should be done in consultation with Hertex Kramerville staff or the nearest
Hertex showroom. Wallpapers may be viewed on the Hertex website. Other items
must be viewed in showrooms.
d. Select paints and colours from the Annie Sloan range of chalk paints. Colours may be
previewed on the Annie Sloan South Africa website.
e. Prepare final design drawings and submit these to Homewood 1 week prior to setup.
Budgets and Allowances
13. An allocated cash allowance of R5000 from HOMEWOOD, which must be used by each
finalist for acquiring décor items which will become the property of the finalist after
competition display. This constitutes part of the finalists’ prize. All purchases must be
supported with VAT invoices in the company name (Homewood Retail Kramerville (Pty) Ltd).
Homewood reserves the right to select any or all elements of each design for continued
showroom display for a maximum period of up to six months. The winning space will be
reconstructed for further display of 1 month after the run of the competition, and all décor
items used must again be made available for this.
14. Hertex will provide finalists with a retail voucher of R5000 for locally stocked fabrics and
papers, as well as the ‘appro’ use of rugs and other soft furnishings from their showroom
collections to a value of R15,000. Goods will be returned to Hertex for credit in the condition
in which they were received. Custom upholstered goods will remain the property of
HOMEWOOD.
15. Annie Sloan South Africa will provide a budget of R5000 for paints and further décor items of
the finalist’s choice. Any objects acquired will become the property of the finalist, subject to
the same conditions as those in paragraph 13.
16. BY agreement with HOMEWOOD, finalist designers’ personal décor articles (including
additional structural elements, lighting, artworks, soft furnishings and objets – beyond those
acquired with the allocated budget allowance) may be included in spaces - at the finalist’s
own risk. These may include items sponsored by designers’ agreements with external
suppliers, but may not include any items of large furniture. Sponsored décor sourced by
finalists should not be in conflict with items supplied by Homewood or official competition
sponsors and will be allowed at HOMEWOOD’s sole discretion. Acknowledgement of these
additional sponsors will be limited to inclusion of the sponsor’s name on a single display
board no larger than A4 size on the stand. N.B. The winning space will be reconstructed for
further display after the run of the competition, and such items used must again be made
available for this.
17. Should finalists choose to in any way augment items acquired with the allocated budget they
acknowledge that they are aware that one of the judging criteria is use of budget
expenditure, and this MAY affect individual judges assessment of this criterion.
Applications for entry
18. Applications for entry must be submitted online at:
www.homewood.co.za/designer2015.html (a microsite page).
19. Applications will open on February 9th and remain open until midnight Friday 31st July 2015.
20. Applicants may submit multiple applications to a maximum of four, unless selected as a
finalist.
21. Access information for the application web page will be published in all calls for entry,
including those sent to design colleges and institutions, the print media and social media
promotions of competition entry, but navigation through the regular HOMEWOOD website
is not planned to be provided.
22. All applicants must submit an illustrative portfolio (maximum of four A4 pages) of their own
original design work, completed within the past 6 months. Designs must include at least two
complete (furnished) space plans in 2D or 3D views. File formats must be MS Word, MS
Excel, MS PowerPoint, PDF - or DWG, DWF, 3DS or TCW CAD formats. The more professional
the portfolio presentation, the better the applicant’s chance of selection as a finalist will be.
However it is understood that some applicants will have greater cad proficiency, experience
and access to smarter tools than others; we want entry to be as inclusive as possible.
23. Applicants must declare that portfolio work submitted is their own, and grant permission for
its use for publicizing the competition should HOMEWOOD choose to do so. This declaration
will be implicit in all entries submitted via the website.

be required. This must be submitted online on the official entry form.
