11
2015 STEAM-H Application
Revised MARCH 22, 2015
Why STEAM-H?
Given the rich cultural history, racial, and linguistic diversity of our state, New Mexico is uniquely positioned to
contribute significantly to both immediate and future national and local demands for a technologically advanced
STEAM-H workforce. However, only 42 percent of the state’s seventh graders are proficient in science as
benchmarked in national assessments. Additionally, New Mexico has the challenge of preparing many students
who live in rural settings and may not have access to the engagement of STEAM-H communities that urban
centers and large institutions have to offer.
Why would UNM Health Science Center host a STEAM-H event?
As a leading employer and the only academic medical center in the state, the University of New Mexico and the
Health Sciences Center is advancing its commitment to help build the future workforce across the state. Research
suggests that developing a science identity requires performance (social performance of a scientist, e.g. ways of
talking and using tools), recognition (recognizing oneself and getting recognized by others as a scientist), and
competence (knowledgeable of science content). To promote these three attributes in New Mexico youth, the
UNM HSC Office for Diversity will host the first annual UNM Health Careers Exploration Extravaganza
Weekend. Importantly, there will be scientists, health professionals, professional students and community
members who will engage with and inspire participants to envision themselves in such careers while building
sustainable relationships regardless of geographical or other barriers.
Office for Diversity, University of New Mexico Health Science Center
The HSC's commitment to addressing health and educational disparities is evidenced by the creation of HSC
Office for Diversity. The Office for Diversity is responsible for a full array of programs addressing faculty
diversity, linguistic and cultural competence, K-20 educational pipeline, research data and analyses, family
involvement/community engagement, and leadership on issues of inclusion and equity.
The Office for Diversity is perhaps best known for it’s excellent educational pipeline programs that encourage and
support New Mexican students of all ages, from kindergarten through college and professional schools, to succeed
in careers in health sciences. Offering strong academic and other support to students from traditionally underserved
or underrepresented groups, these programs assist more than 300 learners a year and create a pipeline of students
into health careers in New Mexico.
