beste imrov-gitaristene i verden i dag, Otomo Yoshihide and Jim O`Rourke, bidrar på hvert sitt album. Begge albumene er
innspilt live på The Pit Inn i Tokyo. Shinkjuku Growl med Jim O`Rourke ble innspilt 4.februar 2008, og Shinkuju Crawl med
Otomo Yoshihide ble innspilt 2.oktober 2007. Disse to livealbumene viser de forskjellige sidene ved The Thing, og hvordan
de smelter sin egen musikk sammen med gitarmagien til Yoshihide og O`Rourke

”Og dermed er tida inne for å trekke fram «gudfaren» i sør-koreansk rock'n roll, gitaristen, produsenten, komponisten og superstjernen
Shin Joong Hyun (73). Hans opprinnelige vinylutgivelser går symptomatisk nok for 2000-3000 kroner.
Shin ble en superstjerne, men i 1972, etter å ha nektet å lage en sang til ære for diktatoren Park Chung Hee, ble han regelrett forfulgt. Musikken
hans ble fordømt som «bråkete» og «vulgær», og Shin ble arrestert, anklagd for å ha brukt marijuhana. Han tilsto under vanntortur og ble først
tvanginnlagt på et mentalsykehus, deretter dømt til fire måneders fengsel. Karrieren fikk en knekk, men Shins stjerne har vært stigende. I 2009
ble han den sjuende gitaristen i verden som er blitt beæret med en spesiallagd Fender gitar-modell. Tidligere er det bare seks gitarister
som har opplevd noe lignende; Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen og Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Records, som i 1971-73 ga ut mye forskjellig musikk:
soul, funk, hippierock og faktisk Four Seasons, som fikk

“The Night” (utgitt i 1972). Flere andre hvite grupper var
på Mowest, og soulstjerner som Syreeta, Thelma Houston, G.C. Cameron og Commodores (et par år før de slo

His debut album Skanky Skanky was released in January 2009, this was followed by a Fabric live mix album and a lot of requests for his production skills
with everyone from Major Lazer to Grandmaster Flash getting in touch. Over a
Guinness or two in his new London local (he decamped from Sheffield to the
capital in 2010) Toddla reflects on the last couple of "pretty crazy years", the
current UK scene and sets out his stall for what promises to be a very busy
and successful 2011.
"When I was first signed (to 1965 Records) every kid wanted to be in a band.
The Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines and all that were really popular, me and
my mates who were into Notorious B.I.G and dancehall were really in the
minority. Nowadays kids want to be Skream and Benga, or Tinchy or N-Dubz
and because of that all their points of musical reference have changed"
It's true, there has been a huge shift in musical aesthetic, away from the skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors of The Strokes and the seemingly never-ending
bandwagon that followed. What Toddla's saying here is borne out of the recently released statistic that rock music has had its worst year in the UK
charts since 1960 with only 3 rock bands making it into the top 100 songs of
2010.
As a backdrop to Dizzee, Tinie, Tinchy et al storming the charts, the explosion
of dubstep and subsequent re-evaluation of bass-driven, UK club music has
seen a major shift in what people aged 15 - 25 are raving to. Where Soulwax
and SMD and their like were ruling the clubs 2002 - 2006 nowadays seasoned
campaigners like Shy FX and David Rodigan are championed by kids who
weren't born when they were first spinning records.
Watch Me Dance is a bold step forward for Toddla T. Fans of Skanky Skanky
will find plenty that will please them but for the countless thousands of clubbers who know Toddla T the DJ but haven't heard his productions this second
album may come as a surprise. Toddla explains...
"I've been busiest in the last two years as a DJ, so of course this album has a
big dose of the sounds and production techniques that I'm out there representing in the clubs every weekend but if you're looking for tops-off jungle or 4x4
bassline tearouts you won't find them here. This is definitely still a record for
clubbers, but it's the one they'll listen to at home with their mates or every day
on the way to work"
In Watch Me Dance Toddla has created a dubwise, street-soul masterpiece.
In a typically precocious reference to records that were made when he was 4
and 10 years old respectively Toddla sums it up. "A bit of the Soul from Soul II
Soul Club Classics and a bit of the Left-field from Leftism, I've been listening
to those now and again, they took in a whole load of club music and made an
album that summed something up and were great to listen to at the same
time."

At the crossroads of U.S. 177 and State Highway 51, in the midst of a vast
Mid-western plain, sits Stillwater, Oklahoma, unlikely hometown to a
remarkable new band Other Lives and its gifted singer/composer and multiinstrumentalist bandleader, Jesse Tabish. Tamer Animals – their first album
to hit the UK -- is set for release on 29th August through Play it Again Sam.
Available on vinyl, CD and download, Tamer Animals fires an opening salvo
of ambitious scope: densely textured and uncompromisingly sophisticated, yet
instantly appealing and alluringly mysterious.
Produced and mixed by Beck’s long-time drummer Joey Waronker, Tamer
Animals was written and recorded at Other Lives’ own studio over a period
of sixteen months. Interweaving layer upon layer of intricately winding and
pulsing orchestrations, Tamer Animals’ eleven tracks enfold listeners in a
bounteous panoply of melodies and textures reminiscent of Brian Wilson’s
daring Smile period.
The term “chamber-pop” readily springs to mind, but Other Lives’ music
invokes everything from Philip Glass’ dazzling minimalism to Morricone’s dark
epic sweep. The first single off Tamer Animals, “For 12″ (currently on the
XFM playlist) especially exemplifies the latter: its galloping rhythms conjure a
feeling of uneasy expansiveness, a timeless aural sublimity of The Great
Plains of the Old West, with nary a saddle or spur in sight. “For 12″ has

"There's a point, when you're in a certain headspace, where you feel you can actually do anything
we want to do, and not really have any preconception about it," says Nick Hallam. And for him and
his long-time Stereo MCs partner, Rob Birch, their journey into sound has been constantly defined
by the battles they've had to fight for creative freedom - not with record companies or industry
figures, but from the pressures they put themselves under. To many pop fans, the Stereos are the
group who burned bright in the early '90s, when their third LP, Connected, won two Brit Awards and
shifted millions of copies, and who then disappeared for the next decade. But as their new album,
The Emperor's Nightingale, suggests, the true story is much more complicated - and far more
fascinating - than that.
Hallam and Birch became Britain's first global rap stars, paving the way for the Plan Bs and Dizzee
Rascals. Appearing live with everyone from U2 to the Happy Mondays, from Living Color and Peter

Freed from the pressure to rap simply because it's expected, Rob sings on the record, much of
which was written not how the Stereos have usually worked, by building up grooves from sampled
loops and beats, but from old-school jam sessions, with bass, guitar, drums and vocals all playing
together until they find a common thread. It's a sound that will surprise those who think they know

Since forming in 2008, Airship have notched up acclaimed support
tours with Editors, Biffy Clyro, The Joy Formidable and Frightened
Rabbit. Two self-released EPs have received rave reviews.
Influential Manchester listings guide City Limits called them “Music’s
best-kept secret” in 2009, and they’ve deserved that tag ever since.
Until now, when their determination to succeed in the right way has
paid off with debut album Stuck In This Ocean and their secret is
about to be unleashed on the world at large. Still with an average
age of just 22, the quartet’s sound has progressed from an already
remarkable start, their songs becoming more direct and their sound
ever more open and ambitious from constant touring.
Some major labels have paid attention and been spurned. Instead,
Airship have bided their time, waiting until they had enough songs
they were completely happy with for their debut album, knowing
exactly what they wanted it to sound like, recording it with their
own agenda, and without label interference, before eventually
signing to PIAS.
“It can be frustrating, seeing rubbish bands signing massive deals,”
Elliott admits "but, when I listen to our album, it feels like
everything has been timed just right. If we’d done this two years
ago, we wouldn’t have been fully ready.”
Stuck In This Ocean was made with Doves/Cherry Ghost producer
Dan Austin in a total of just 15 days at Rockfield in Monmouth and
Moles in Bath - Editors guitarist Chris Urbanowicz and Doves’ Martin
Rebelski added initial production on the sessions.
“Dan was out of our budget, but he loved the songs so much he
wanted to produce the album anyway,” says Elliott. “He suggested
we record the album as live, the four of us playing in a room with
the minimum of overdubs, and that was a brilliant idea.”

On the third anniversary of the birth of Girls as a band Christopher
Owens and Chet White found themselves entering the studio to begin
recording their second album. More a collection of gear than a studio,
recording took place in the bowels of a San Francisco office building.
The two teamed up with new drummer Darren Weiss and guitarist
John Anderson assembling performances and ultimately creating new
music and musical relationships to carry the band through its newest
incarnation. Quickly the record took shape and with the luxury of time
and an outstanding and vast collection of amplifiers as well as tube
and transistor based recording equipment the sound was formed.
Less explorative than previous records the sound is built on the ideas
and ears of a much more confident band. And the outcome is their
most important release to date.
Girls have taken what they've always done best and have displayed it
with amazing clarity and the strongest of intent. Classic songwriting
coupled with exciting production is their way. “I’m still all the same,”
Owens says. “I still know I have to do it. I still love the songs and
writing songs.”
Father, Son, Holy Ghost is at times ebullient and at times absolutely
devastating. A truly beautiful record and the perfect amalgamation of
a band’s past and present while most importantly leaving us all
excited and hungry for their future

August Darnell’s swaggering alter ego KID CREOLE dons his famed
fedora and gets back in stride with his first high profile studio album in
over 10 years this Summer, ‘I WAKE UP SCREAMING’.
Darnell first came to prominence during the mid-‘70s in New York,
forming Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band with his brother Stony
Browder before producing a slew of eccentric projects for ZE Records
including Cristina, Don Armando’s Seventh Avenue Rumba Band and
Gichy Dan, as well as sporting his trademark zoot suit and fedora for
the first time for the debut recordings by Kid Creole & The Coconuts.
Signing on to Chris Blackwell’s Island Records and Seymour Stein’s
Sire imprint, Darnell would become one of the ‘80s’ most unique and
recognisable figures, scoring a brace of unforgettable chart hits
mixing heavyweight tropical grooves with plenty of lyrical bite – ‘Stool
Pigeon’, ‘Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy’, ‘I’m A Wonderful Thing Baby’
and more.
With cover artwork echoing his love of 1940s film noir, the new album
explores the vibrant mind of Darnell with a variety of themes and
styles. Opener ‘Stony And Cory’, riding a bump ‘n’ hustle rhythm,
recalls the Dr. Buzzard days and the stormy relationship between
lead vocalist Cory Daye and bandleader Stony Browder; the title track

Composer Chris Taylor is set to release his first solo album
under the moniker of CANT September 12 on his own Terrible
Records in N. America / and Warp Records elsewhere. Dreams Come True features Taylor, who serves as bassist, vocalist and producer of Grizzly Bear, collaborating with
George Lewis Jr. of Twin Shadow. Twin Shadow’s critically
acclaimed record Forget was recently released by Terrible
Records and produced by Taylor. Taylor plans to tour in support of the album with a full band, dates to be announced
shortly.
Soon after finishing work on Forget Taylor and Lewis turned
their attention to Dreams Come True. The pair wrote and recorded most of the material on Dreams Come True in a week
and a half in a bedroom connected to what used to be Allaire
Studios, where Grizzly Bear also recorded their lauded 2009
release Veckatimest.
Taylor joined Grizzly Bear in 2004 after the release of their
debut record. Serving as the group’s producer, Taylor is a multi-instrumentalist who plays bass, clarinet, flute, saxophone
and accordion in addition to contributing vocals. Taylor founded Terrible Records in mid-2009 with label partner Ethan Silverman to devote more time to working with emerging artists.
He most recently worked with Dev Hynes of Blood Orange.

Ralph Myerz is with no doubt one of the most active music personas of the Norwegian
music scene. It was the year of 1997 when Ralph asked for people to play percussion
with him during a party in Bergen, Norway. The Jack Herren Band showed up through a
combination of mutual contacts and high-school friendship. Supposedly a one-time-event,
they had so much fun playing together that they decided to form a band, and Ralph
Myerz & The Jack Herren Band was formed. The band released a 7" and a 12" on the
Telle Records that were followed by great reviews from magazines and dj around Europe,
including Dimitri From Paris who included the track "Nikita" on one of his Playboy
Mansion compilations. In 2002 they were signed by the US label Emperor Norton
Records, and they released A Special EP. The album A Special Album followed one-year
later feat. the tracks "Casino" and "Think Twice", which both became hits in clubs across
Europe, and commercial hits in Norway. Gold Records & Norwegian Grammy
nominations were happily celebrated! In 2005, the album Your New Best Friends
followed and got massive reviews in Europe. Magazines such as Mixmag, Djmag and
Sunday Times praised the new album as "Down tempo Heaven". Great times were had
on tour, especially the Big Chill festival showed Ralph Myerz so much love, forever
thankful. His third album Sharp Knives and Loaded Guns came out on EMI 2007 followed
by touring all over Europe playing festivals such as Glastonbury, Montreal Jazz festival
and many more. So after this album and especially this tour, Ralph Myerz decided to
focus more on production and studio work, and chill…. In 2009 Ralph dropped his first
solo album with guests like Devin the Dude, Kurupt, Talib Kweli and Christine Sandtorv
named Ralphorama! Staying in Los Angeles for many months and working closely with
people like Dogg Pound led to many connections in the US hip hop world including
collaborations with legends such as Snoop Dogg and George Clinton amongst many
others. Meanwhile, during his stay there he started working on a new album called
Outrun. Armed with synthesizers and wine he worked for a year on it and then he moved
to the Bay Area in order to finish the recordings. Somehow the cosmic winds took him to
Klik Records of Athens, Greece. Sharing a true passion for that good space music, they
decided to work together. Driving around in California inspired Outrun to be an album for
those late night rides while listening to music. 17 new tracks of good-vibed, spaced-out,
phased-out, dub-disco-late nite muzik with that special Ralph Myerz sound. Sounding like

Levan. He has also played Dub You Crazy With Love by Mad Professor every Monday
morning for the last 10 years. Made in sunny Cali it’s definitely a summer record for those
late nights with your friends. But anyways, put this in your car on your way to work or the
beach, play it loud in a garden with your friends drinking wine, or simply while being bore

dEUS return with a new album on September 19th. ‘Keep You Close’
is the follow up to 2008’s ‘Vantage Point’ and was recorded at the
band’s own studio in their home city of Antwerp over a six month
period with producers David Botrill and Adam Noble.
As the title suggests, ‘Keep You Close’ sees lead singer and lyricist
Tom Barman react to ‘Vantage Point’ with a determination to return
the band to a more personal lyrical style and a warmer musical
approach. Whilst still immensely proud of ‘Vantage Point’, Tom felt
that its follow up should move away from that album’s ‘very loud, in
your face’ sound. Consequently, much of the focus of ‘Keep You
Close’ has been to develop a sound that embraces a more organic
and spacious dynamic. To aid this process, and in stark contrast to
the studio bound writing approach of ‘Vantage Point’, the songs that
make up ‘Keep You Close’ were road tested live at festivals
throughout the writing and recording period and developed through
live rehearsals within the studio to, in Tom’s words, ensure that they
were ‘more mature when it came to recording them’.
Fans of dEUS will recognize the continuance of the band’s diverse
musical template throughout the album, embracing rhythms that ‘go
to your legs and your heart’ as Tom puts it alongside their much
vaunted mixing of diverse musical styles to create an album of
multiple shades which remains a complete body of work. The
sessions for the album saw a host of further tracks that were deemed
not suitable for the album and which will be released in other formats
in good time, including some tantalizingly described by Tom as ‘very
Can meets LCD’. A chance visit to Antwerp by Afghan Whigs /
Twilight Singers Greg Dulli saw him visit the studio and lay down
vocals for ‘The Dark Sets In’, a coincidence made all the stranger by
a conversation the previous day in which the band remarked that it
would be perfect for his voice. ‘Keep You Close’ is released by Play It
Again Sam on October 3rd 2011.

performer, best known as founder and front man of British rock band

Wilson has described it as "my biggest project to date".
He continues, “’Insurgentes’ was an important step for me into
something new. This record takes that as a starting point, but it’s
more experimental and more eclectic. For me the golden period for
music was the late sixties and early seventies, when the album
became the primary means of artistic expression, when musicians
liberated themselves from the 3 minute pop song format, and started
to draw on jazz and classical music especially, combining it with the
spirit of psychedelia to create “journeys in sound” I guess you could
call them. So without being retro, my album is a kind of homage to
that spirit. There’s everything from [Ennio] Morricone-esque film themes to choral music to piano ballads to a 23 minute progressive jazz–
inspired piece. I’ve actually used a few jazz musicians this time,
which is something I picked up from my work remixing the King
Crimson records.”

Since the release of 2003’s ‘Spokes’, Plaid have scored two of
Michael Arias’ award-winning films, released ‘Greedy Baby’,
an ambitious audio-visual collaboration, continued to perform
around the world (including a landmark performance at Warp
Records’ 20th birthday celebrations) – and have now crafted a
new album for release this Autumn. Hear the first music from it

Latin in origin, the word ‘scintilli’ can be translated as ‘I am
many sparks’. A self-affirming mantra Plaid (aka Ed Handley
and Andy Turner) claim to chant for two hours every morning,
before starting work in their newly built studio shed in North
London. Every beat of the work has been carefully crafted:
they’ve calculated that each beat has taken approximately one
day to construct - from the announcement of the laying down
of the first foundation beat in early 2009, to the rendering of
the final decay earlier this year. ‘This labour intensive process
will guarantee long lasting pieces of music that can withstand
the restless tensions placed upon them by modern playback
devices’, they insist.

Much of “4everevolution” was made in conjunction with various members of
Smith’s Banana Klan crew. Production for “Revelation” and string arrangements on Smith’s own “Skid Valley” came from Gibbs King, Ollie and Olmino
produced the monster-funk number “Beyond This World.” Meanwhile, current
and former band members play drums, guitar and bass on a variety of tracks
(as did Mr Manuva himself), while longtime side-man Ricky Ranking crops up
with vocal contributions on “Wha’ Mek” and the darkest of toasts on “In The
Throes Of It.” DJ MK, meanwhile, adds chorus vocals to “Banana Skank” – a
croonsome new direction for the veteran turntablist! – and Daddy Kope spits in
the style of UK hip hop’s finest on “Crow Bars.” The only other productions on
the record not from Manuva’s own hand arrives via the antipodes. Producers
Dizz1 (“Here We Go Again”) and Monkeymarc (“Who Goes There?”) show
how much of Manuva’s unquantized lope has been absorbed by producers on
the other side of the world. In addition to Ranking and MK, vocal contributions
come from Skunk Anansie’s Skin (on the state-of-the-nation diatribe “Skid
Valley,” which also features Skunk Anansie’s legendary bass player, Cass
Lewis), new talents Rokhsan (on both first single “Get The Get” and “Beyond
This World”) and Elan Tamara (“The Path”) compete for glory with the beauty
of the voice of a veteran like Spikey Tee (“Here We Go Again”). Perhaps the
most touching singing on the record, though, comes from Manuva himself,
who flexes his melodic jones on a trio of tracks which perhaps reaches its
peak on the loping, self-effacing ballad “Wha’ Mek?”
Overall, despite the presence of this or that guest, the vision remains that of
one man. Roots Manuva has honed his craft across four previous studio albums, picking up a MOBO, plus Brit and Mercury nominations along the way.
This record, though, represents some of his freshest, most urgent work.

Only important Belgian albums are rewarded with a foreign release.
Balthazar's "Applause" is a twofold milestone. It's the first debut since dEUS'
"Worst Case Scenario" (1994) to be proclaimed best Belgian album of the
year.
Balthazar is a musical "Belgitude". Just as Absynthe Minded, dEUS or
Soulwax/2 Many DJs, it is a powerful blend of extremes. Edgy yet rhythmic,
subdued yet enticing, precise yet enchanting. And intelligent. But "Applause"
is also a tribute to diligence. The band had been popping in and out of the
spot lights for the past five years, raking in recognition after recognition. But
despite the media loving their songs, nothing seemed to solidify.
And then all of a sudden, there it is: game, set and match. "Applause" is a rare
accolade to musical shrewdness. It's realistically ambitious. The musical
influences linger, but do so playfully. A touch of Arctic Monkeys, Blur, dEUS,
Gorillaz, LCD Soundsystem? Perhaps. Promising bands are always compared
to a multitude of predecessors. As they are so true to themselves, they are
difficult to pinpoint. Balthazar is such a prodigious band.
The sound is skinned and then fine-tuned. Its precision is a credit to Ynge
Leidulv Sætre. The Norwegian wizard is brought on board because of his
skills (Annie, Kings of Convenience, Röyksopp) and his open-mindedness. He
doesn't know Belgium nor has he ever heard of Balthazar and the band is
perfectly ok with that.
And then there it is. Shortly after the release of "Applause" it is as if Balthazar
has always been around. Even though nobody quite knows the names of the
drummer or the bass player, Balthazar is on its way to becoming a first rate
live band. A band that easily connects to people and makes its audience
spontaneously react. Tom Barman (dEUS) cries out for an encore during one
of their concerts and "The Boatman" is played again....
"Applause" enters at #20 in leading Dutch music magazine Oor’s “end list” of
2010 ("... a precious debut... up there with Arctic Monkeys...").

That’s how U.K.’s Rock Sound describes Black Box Revelation. Brussels,
Belgium may not be known for producing great rock and roll bands, but don’t
tell that to 22-year-old Jan Paternoster nor his 20-year-old sidekick Dries Van
Dijck, who have been playing together for a decade, already releasing two
albums, 2007’s Set Your Head on Fire and 2010’s Silver Threats (recorded in
London’s legendary Konk Studios) that established the duo as a serious force
to be reckoned with. A cross between R&B-inflected garage-band rock that
takes its cues from mid-’60s Stones and The Kinks to the most gut-bucket,
electric delta blues evocative of Led Zeppelin by way of The White Stripes,

just that… a musical revelation that can’t be boxed into a single category.

Mungolian Jetset is back with a debut, cheekily masked as their third
effort, but seriously, this is their first album of totally original
compositions. Here is the undiluted Mung, neatly naked wrapped

Infamous for their epic translations, collaborations and remixes for
artists such as Lindstrøm, Mari Boine, Nils Petter Molvaer and others,
they have already firmly developed their own unique sound, that is
equally progressively disco and psychedelically intoxicating, as it is
hilariously cheesy but imbued with a mysteriously deep resonance
from some far-off planet`s core.
Rather than delivering another full-on take of the epic entertainments
that have become the staple of their reputation ( or notoriety,
depending on who's talking ), they have now taken more scoops of
melody, poptastic whimsy and lighter shades of oddness, to hybridize
with their already mutated sound. The result is "Schlungs", a series of
8 separate entities united by their sheer MUNGNESS. The epicness
remains, but now sits alongside pieces that are more direct, mainlining
the exuberant folly that is the sound of Mung; however, this is Mung
directly into the frontal lobe…..
Lyrically, "Schlungs" involves tales of fatal alien abductions and ghosts
of murderous (but snazzily-dressed) transvestites, as well as
confessions of dark and illusory multimedia desires and dispatches
from the borderline state of the all-consuming hyperrealism of the
Internet. Characters from the fringes of reality with odd-sounding yet
somehow familiar names wander through the streets of Mungville, and
usually break into ecstatic dance before their end is met. This is what
would have happened if William Burroughs had been given a backdrop
of disco instead of bebop. Instead of The Naked Lunch, this is The
Naked 7-11 Hotdog.

Glasgow’s talent pool clearly runs deep, and if the city’s last few
years of genre-busting electronic music have made anything remotely
clear it’s that Rustie is one of the deep-fried kingdom’s crown jewels.
Emerging with the rest of the multi-talented Numbers crew, and with
only a handful of laser-guided releases to his name, his presence far
outreaches his focused, evolving discography. Rightly mentioned in
the same breath with many of the most innovative producers in the
world, astute Pitchfork scribe Martin Clarke once described Rustie’s
music “like a metaphor for living in intense digital excess” – something everyone should be able to relate to.
As is often the case, this digital excess also mirrors the excesses of
the physical world, and so Rustie time travels for the cocaine-addled
synthesizer washes and searing guitar tones of 1980’s pop, the cashinfused bombast of new-millennium R&B, the pit-of-your-stomach
ecstasy high of the most classic rave memories and the bloodshot
scowl of white-hot pirate radio broadcasts. In 2007, with a new generation of irreverent producers and artists seemingly simultaneously
uploading their music to MySpace, Rustie’s ‘Jagz The Smack’ EP
was a miniature revelation. In a swift five tracks, it managed to not
only synthesize the tone of mid-decade electronic music, but also
provided a danceable prediction for much of what would soon be called “UK bass music” (not to mention many other, far less eloquent,
names).
It would take three more years to move through a string of now classic 12”s like ‘Zig-Zag’, ‘Bad Science’ and ‘Play Doe/Tempered’, his
collaboration with Bristol’s mighty Joker. This unfettered run was capped by a string of essential remixes (or “Resmacks” in the parlance of
Rustie) for the likes of Jamie Lidell, Kelis, The Big Pink and Nicki Minaj, leading into his debut EP for Warp, ‘Sunburst’. In another breathless five-track flash, ‘Sunburst’ amalgamated Rustie’s love for obscure Japanese prog-rock, 16-bit video game sonics and icy grime and
Detroit techno heft into a fleeting vision of the future of rave music.
Snare rolls ricocheted, synths undulated in hypercolor hues and the
bass bubbled over, the stage was set.
