Come, thou long-expected Jesus
Creator of the stars of light
Gabriel the angel came
God to Adam came in Eden
God whose love is everywhere (Falling Fifths)
God whose love is everywhere (Christingle Praise)
Had he not loved us
Hark the glad sound
Hark! a trumpet call is sounding
Jesus, hope of every nation
Lo, he comes with clouds descending
Now is the time, the time of God’s favour
O come, O come, Emmanuel
O come, our world’s Redeemer, come
On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry
People, look east
Soon – and very soon
The angel Gabriel
The bells of waiting Advent ring
The darkness turns to dawn
The Lord at first did Adam make
The Lord will come and not be slow
The people who in darkness walked
There’s a great light
Thy kingdom come!
Wake, O wake
We hail the approaching God
When Mary gathered summer’s yield
When the angel came to Mary
You shall go out with joy
A great and mighty wonder
A song was heard at Christmas
A virgin most holy
All my heart this night rejoices
Angels from the realms of glory
Away in a manger (Cradle Song – unison arrangement)
Away in a manger (Cradle Song – choir arrangement)
Away in a manger (Away in a manger)
Bethlehem, we come to bring
Born in a stable
Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light
Bright mystical starlight
Child in a stable
Child in the manger (Bunessan)
Child in the manger (Sanger)
Child of heaven, born on earth
Christians, awake, salute the happy morn
Christians, make a joyful sound

Christmas for God’s holy people
Come and hear the joyful singing [4-part]
Come and hear the joyful singing [3-part]
Come and sing the Christmas story
Come to Bethlehem
Hush, do not cry [modern version]
Lullay, lulla (Coventry carol)
Descend from heaven, you angels bright
Ding-dong, ding
Ding-dong, merrily on high (Wood)
Ding-dong, merrily on high (Barnard)
Donkey and ox around his bed
From highest heaven
Rejoice with heart and voice [4-part]
Rejoice with heart and voice [3-part]
Go, tell it on the mountain
God of God, the uncreated
God rest you merry, gentlemen
Good Christians all, rejoice
Hark! the herald angels sing
Holy child, how still you lie
I dreamed that I saw three donkeys
I saw a maiden sitting and sing
I see your crib
In Bethlehem a baby sleeping
In the bleak mid-winter
Infant holy (arr. Rusbridge)
Infant holy (arr. Iliff)
It came upon the midnight clear (Noel)
It came upon the midnight clear (Carol)
Jesus Christ the Lord is born
Jesus, child of gentle Mary
Jesus, Saviour, holy child
Joy to the world!
Lift your heart and raise your voice
Listen to the message
Long ago, prophets knew
Lord, when you came to earth
Love came down at Christmas (Archer)
Love came down at Christmas (Gartan)
Mary came with meekness
Mary had a baby, yes, Lord [4-part]
Mary had a baby, yes, Lord [3-part]
No frightened shepherds now
O babe divine
O come, all ye faithful
O come all you children
O come and join the dance
O holy night
O leave your sheep
O little one sweet
O little town of Bethlehem (Forest Green)

O slumber, heaven-born treasure [4-part]
O slumber, heaven-born treasure [3-part]
On Christmas night all Christians sing
Once in royal David’s city
Rejoice and be merry
Rejoice and sing
Ring aloud the Christmas bells
Ring out the bells
See him lying on a bed of straw (version 1)
See him lying on a bed of straw (version 2)
See, amid the winter’s snow
Shepherd-boy, tell me
Shepherds came, their praises bringing
Silent night
Sing lullaby
Soft the evening shadows fall
Softly a shepherd is singing
Still, still, still [4-part]
Still, still, still [3-part]
The daylight is fading
The first nowell [long version]
The holly and the ivy
The virgin Mary had a baby boy
There’s a Saviour to see
This child
To Bethlehem the strangers came
We believe this is Jesus
What child is this [4-part]
What child is this [3-part]
When God from heaven to earth came down
While shepherds watched their flocks by night
Within this humble manger
Good King Wenceslas looked out
Saint Stephen was faithful
As with gladness men of old
Bethlehem, what greater city
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning
Faithful vigil ended
How brightly gleams the morning star
Lord, you were rich beyond all splendour
New light has dawned
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
One star
Once, in a garden, long ago
Small wonder the star
The first nowell [short version]
The Lord of life and glory
Three kings from Persian lands
We three kings of orient are [4-part]
We three kings of orient are [3-part]
Word of the Father everlasting
We wish you a merry Christmas

PREFACE
Another carol book? No, The Carol Book! The complete resource for your Christmas services
and concerts, offering not just one of the largest collections of carols ever published, but a
range of support material that sets totally new standards in Christmas publishing.
Christmas is a time when simplicity pays enormous dividends, and the top-class choir will
find here easily sight-readable material that will move and engage the listener. Those who
have to work somewhat harder to achieve a good standard of performance will be delighted
to discover here arrangements that are both practical and imaginative.
Our highest aim has been to turn limitations into possibilities. So, for instance, young musicians attempting an alto part for the first time will discover some simple material that will
give them confidence and pleasure. And choirs with limited numbers of men will appreciate
tenor parts that do not go too high, as well as three part arrangements for soprano, alto and
baritone.
Our thanks go to Tim Ruffer of The Royal School of Church Music for having confidence in
our vision and encouraging us to bring it to fruition; to many distinguished writers and
composers for allowing us to include their material and for writing for us; to Chris Idle for
the biblical index and considerable help with the liturgical material; to Peter Moger for his
assistance with the service templates; to Tim Willetts who produced the synthesised backings
for some of the more modern items*; and to Peter Wright, Stephen Disley and the choir of
Southwark Cathedral for their willingness to embrace our vision and record The Carol
Collection†, a CD of 30 carols from The Carol Book which thrillingly conveys the joy of
Christmas in over 75 minutes of music from the collection.
The penultimate carol on that disc reminds us why Christmas is so special to us – the gift of God
himself to the human race. It is our fervent hope that The Carol Book will enhance our worship
of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, as each Christmas comes round:
Small wonder the love, small wonder the grace,
the power, the glory, the light of his face;
but all to redeem my poor heart –
no small wonder!
John Barnard and David Iliff
*Tim Willetts is willing to do further synthesised backings to order.
He can be contacted at: [email protected]
†The Carol Collection (order number HAVPCD 313) is available from The Royal School of
Church Music, from Herald Audio-Visual Publications (www.heraldav.co.uk) e-mail:
[email protected] and from Southwark Cathedral.

The Lord at first did Adam make
God whose love is everywhere
Creator of the stars of light
God whose love is everywhere
God to Adam came in Eden
God to Adam came in Eden
Joy to the world
God whose love is everywhere
On Jordan’s bank
O come, O come Emmanuel
O come, O come Emmanuel
Now is the time
Now is the time
O come, O come Emmanuel
Hark! the herald angels sing
O come, O come Emmanuel
O come, O come Emmanuel
This child secretly comes
Come, thou long-expected Jesus
Faithful vigil ended
Lord, you were rich
Hark! the herald angels sing
In the bleak mid-winter
In the bleak mid-winter
Christians, awake!
God rest you merry, gentlemen
O little town of Bethlehem
See, amid the winter’s snow
See, amid the winter’s snow
O worship the Lord
Joy to the world
In the bleak mid-winter
In the bleak mid-winter
In the bleak mid-winter
O worship the Lord
As with gladness
Angels from the realms of glory
Lo, he comes with clouds
descending
O little town of Bethlehem
Once in royal David’s city
God to Adam came in Eden
O little town of Bethlehem
Thy kingdom come
God whose love is everywhere
I wonder as I wander
Creator of the stars of light
Lo, he comes with clouds
descending
O come, O come Emmanuel
O come, all ye faithful
O worship the Lord
O worship the Lord
On Jordan’s bank
Thy kingdom come
Brightest and best
O worship the Lord
On Jordan’s bank
O come and join the dance
God of God, the uncreated
Now is the time
O come and join the dance
The Lord will come
The Lord will come
O worship the Lord
O worship the Lord
Creator of the stars of light
Joy to the world

A great and mighty wonder
O worship the Lord
Creator of the stars of light
Hark the glad sound
Hark the glad sound
See, amid the winter’s snow
God of God, the uncreated
On Jordan’s bank
O come, O come Emmanuel
God of God, the uncreated
Wake, O wake, and sleep no
longer
Donkey and ox
God rest you merry, gentlemen
Good Christians all, rejoice
Once in royal David’s city
A great and mighty wonder
A virgin most holy
Christmas for God’s holy people
God of God, the uncreated
Had he not loved us
Hark! the herald angels sing
O come, all ye faithful
O come, O come Emmanuel
The darkness turns to dawn
The virgin Mary
Infant holy
O come and join the dance
O little town of Bethlehem
The darkness turns to dawn
The people who in darkness
walked
There’s a great light
Alleluia! Hurry, the Lord is near
Come and hear the joyful singing
Hark the glad sound
Hark! the herald angels sing
It came upon the midnight clear
O babe divine
The darkness turns to dawn
The daylight is fading
Long ago, prophets knew
There’s a great light
A tender shoot hath started
O come, O come Emmanuel
O come, O come Emmanuel
O come, O come Emmanuel
Soon – and very soon
On Jordan’s bank
Soon – and very soon
Joy to the world
See, amid the winter’s snow
O little one sweet
Alleluia! Hurry, the Lord is near
On Jordan’s bank
People look east
God of God, the uncreated
Jesus, hope of every nation
Jesus, hope of every nation
Hark the glad sound
Hark the glad sound
Angels from the realms of glory
On Jordan’s bank
In the bleak mid-winter
Wake, O wake, and sleep no
longer
We hail the approaching God
God whose love is everywhere
You shall go out with joy
Hark! the herald angels sing

Soon – and very soon
To Bethlehem the strangers came
Born in a stable
Bright mystical starlight
Soft the evening shadows fall
Angels from the realms of glory
As with gladness
Come, thou long-expected Jesus
Hark! the herald angels sing
See him lying on a bed of straw
Three kings from Persian lands
We three kings
Long ago, prophets knew
Lord, when you came to earth
Mary came with meekness
Small wonder the star
Come to Bethlehem
Lord, when you came to earth
Jesus Christ the Lord is born
On Jordan’s bank
New light has dawned
The darkness turns to dawn
The people who in darkness
walked
As with gladness
O little one sweet
Jesus, child of gentle Mary
I dreamed that I saw three
donkeys
I dreamed that I saw three
donkeys
Hark the glad sound
Lo, he comes with clouds
descending
Hark! a trumpet call is sounding
In the bleak mid-winter
Lo, he comes with clouds
descending
Born in a stable
New light has dawned
On Jordan’s bank
Jesus, child of gentle Mary
Now is the time
Away in a manger
Soft the evening shadows fall
Hark the glad sound
Lo, he comes with clouds
descending
In the bleak mid-winter
Now is the time
Lo, he comes with clouds
descending
On Jordan’s bank
Gabriel the angel came
The angel Gabriel
When Mary gathered summer’s
yield
When the angel came to Mary
Born in a stable
Long ago, prophets knew
Bethlehem, we come to bring
Lord, when you came to earth
Alleluia! Hurry, the Lord is near
Creator of the stars of light
Long ago, prophets knew
To Bethlehem the strangers came
This child secretly comes
This child secretly comes
The darkness turns to dawn
Break forth, O beauteous
heavenly light
Creator of the stars of light
Long ago, prophets knew
To Bethlehem the strangers came

Away in a manger
Child in the manger
Child of heaven, born on earth
Holy child, how still you lie
I see your crib
Mary had a baby
Once in royal David’s city
Within this humble manger
Go, tell it on the mountain
Silent night
When came in flesh
While shepherds watched their
flocks by night
Break forth, O beauteous
heavenly light
Come and hear the joyful singing
New light has dawned
Jesus, child of gentle Mary
Listen to the message
Angels from the realms of glory
From highest heaven
On Christmas night
Jesus Christ the Lord is born
Still, still, still
Ring aloud the Christmas bells
O come and join the dance
A song was heard at Christmas
All my heart this night rejoices
Come and sing the Christmas
story
Descend from heaven
Glad music fills the Christmas
skies
Rejoice and be merry
The virgin Mary had a baby boy
O come all you children
The daylight is fading
This child secretly comes
Ding-dong, merrily on high
Hark! the herald angels sing
It came upon the midnight clear
O come all ye faithful
There’s a Saviour to see
We believe this is Jesus
God to Adam came in Eden
God rest you merry, gentlemen
Lift your heart and raise your
voice
O come all you children
O slumber, heaven-born treasure
Shepherd-boy, tell me
Shepherds came, their praises
bringing
What child is this
Good Christians all, rejoice
Ring out the bells
See, amid the winter’s snow
