They tend to be very friendly and welcoming of people of all skill levels, from beginning to very experienced and are a great way to expand one’s musical base in an immersion experience. And they are a lot of fun! 1. Common Ground on the Hill in Maryland offers many classes in singing in different folk and popular traditions–Celtic, African American, Appalachian, the Blues, etc. etc. There is an inter-racial Gospel choir every evening, utilizing African American and Appalachia styles, that is open to everyone. Www.commongroundonthehill.com 2. Augusta Heritage Center in W. Virginia has been providing music and cultural workshops for the last thirty-plus years and is the grandmother of all of these camps. They have six different theme weeks each summer, plus other workshops during the year. Folklore Society of Greater Washington In Washington, D.C. area, where I live, FSGW sponsors a monthly Open Sing, a monthly Sacred Harp sing, concerts, dances workshops and many other opportunities. It’s a great way to build repertoire.
