Modern Shanghai isn't just
all skyscrapers. The outlying
water town of Zhujiajiao
is the most charming
example. Willow-lined canals,
traditional residences with
whitewashed walls, grey slate
roofs and classical garden
courtyards, calm temples,
crooked cobbled lanes
and ancient stone bridges
spanning waterways plied by flat-bottomed boats. Zhujiajiao makes for a
fantastic day-trip escape from the clamor and clutter of modern Shanghai,
and it's a wonderful window into China's past.
Zhouzhuang, one of
the most famous water
townships in China, situated
in Kunshan City which is
only 30 kilometers (18 miles)
southeast of Suzhou. It
is noted for its profound
cultural background, the well
preserved ancient residential
houses, the elegant watery views and the strong local colored traditions
and customs.

If you're a Chinese film buff, you may have already seen a bit of Tongli—it's
a popular spot for shooting historical scenes. 18 km to the west of Suzhou,
Tongli is one of the best preserved
of Jiangsu Province's old Yangzi River
Delta water towns, featuring an
assortment of Ming (1368-1644) and
Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) houses
situated amidst a network of canals
spanned by 49 classic Chinese bridges.
A living ancient town in Zhejiang Province with a history of more than one
thousand years, Xitang has a peaceful
and beautiful environment, with flat
terrain and netted rivers. It features huge
area and a large number of bridges,
lanes, and ceilinged corridors. What's
more, other than the noisy commercial
places of interest, Xitang offers pure
scenery of a little town, making the
tourists feel quiet and cozy...
The last resting-on-water town in China, Wuzhen is well known as the town
of “fish, rice and silk”. Small but bright, Wuzhen itself, is the real treasure—its
narrow streets, alleys, canals and
traditional whitewashed houses with
grey slate roofs make for a wonderful
day of casual exploration, and it's
within easy day-tripping distance of
Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou.

SUZHOU

Marco Polo once described Suzhou as one of the most beautiful cities in
China and today visitors to this city—once fondly referred to as "Venice of the
East"—can still see evidence of this beauty along the ancient canals in the old
section of town. It offers a mix of old and new and there's a bit of something
for everyone from cozy cafes, lakes, ancient canals, classical Chinese gardens
and even a silk factory.
Pan Gate 盘门
Originally built under the Wu Kingdom during
the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476
BC), Pan Men (Pan Gate) is a well-preserved relic
that has great historical significance. Serving as
both a land and water barrier, Pan Men, which
was initially a protective barrier against attack,
is a groundbreaking piece of architecture,
its double-water gateway is a landmark in
engineering.
Lingering Garden 留园
Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, Liu
Yuan (Lingering Garden) is a three-hectare park
and one of the most historic parks in China,
officially named a UNESCO world heritage site
in 1997.In addition to numerous pavilions and
towers, Liu Yuan features a number of rockeries and small lakes, making
for beautiful and tranquil scenery.
14
Suzhou Museum 苏州博物馆
The newly reconstructed Suzhou Museum houses over
30,000 Chinese relics. Renowned collections include Ming
and Qing Dynasty paintings and calligraphy, jade, textiles,
as well as ancient Chinese craftwork and silk. Originally
founded in 1960, the museum underwent redesigned
by world-famous architect I.M. Pei, the beautiful new
complex includes three extensive exhibition halls and a
very nice museum shop.
Garden of the Mater of Nets
网师园
The smallest but most renowned
Suzhou garden, the Garden of the
Master of Nets welcomes visitors
into another world. Lattice windows
within the residence perfectly frame
scenes of delicate flowers and
bamboo outside while elaborate rock
gardens complement adjacent fish
ponds.
No. 1 Silk Factory 苏州第一丝绸厂
For over 80 years, the Suzhou No. 1 Silk Factory has been a leader in local silk
production. A complete silk manufacturing facility, the No. 1 Silk Factory handles
every facet of production from raising silkworms and cocoon boiling to reeling
and packing. Visits to the silk factory include a tour of the facility, a lecture about silk
production, a workshop on making silk goods and a visit to the factory's showroom.

Hangzhou casts an enchanting spell. Marco Polo marveled that it was
"the most beautiful and elegant place in the world" and a popular
Chinese saying boasts "above there is heaven, below there is Hangzhou."

Lingying Temple and The Peak Flew Hither 灵隐寺飞来峰
Lingyin Temple (Lingyin Si) has long
been considered one of the most
important Buddhist temples in China.
It is one of the largest and wealthiest
Buddhist temples in the country, and
its location on scenic Feilai Feng ("The
Peak That Flew Hither") makes it one
of Hangzhou's most significant and
popular attractions.
Longjing Tea Plantation
龙井问茶
Hangzhou is famous for three things:
its water, its fertile and picturesque
countryside, and ancient tradition. All
three combine in a perfectly brewed
cup of Longjing Tea. Ideally made with
water straight from the Dragon Well
(Longjing) and leaves picked from the
terraces of the Longjing Plantation, a cup
of this delicate green tea connects you
with some two thousand years of history, going back to the second century
AD when Dragon Well water was discovered and combined with green tea
leaves lightly fried to stop the oxidation process and preserve the best of
their flavor and nutrients.
