Daily encounters offer many different perspectives, materials, and technology. Discovery and exploration are ingredients to an amazing recipe of a developing concept. The child is strong, opinionated and in charge of his own learning. He determines the path of his study. His decisions are respected, encouraged, and supported. The teachers are mere facilitators that offer insights on how loose parts can be manipulated to support the child‟s project. The learning space is a studio where creativity flourishes and extended learning takes place. A part of ISMILE‟s eclectic curriculum and program is devoted to the Reggio Emilia Approach to teaching very young children. We believe that each little one has a hundred languages and we design our spaces, adjust our timetables, and gather the materials to support their exploration and research. This exhibit is the product of a month-long research done by the children based on their interests and the topics they have chosen. This is the result of a wonderful collaboration with their peers, the parents, and the community. The Child The heart of the system in Reggio Emilia approach is the powerful image of a child. The child is born with hundreds of languages as they express it through different ways. The child is seen as strong and capable of building their own future. Environment The learning environment in Reggio Emilia schools is carefully constructed, in which each material or toy has a purpose. The environment encourages the children‟s creativity and visual consciousness, stimulating all their senses as they explore the attractive as well as interactive materials around them. They have the atelier that contains rich variety of tools and resource materials together with the records of the past projects and experiences of the children. The classrooms are likewise filled with children‟s work. The recently concluded Reggio Emilia –inspired Project Work Exhibit Ms.Lycel with the first batch of K2 students in Plaza Indonesia Documentation Documentation is the international trademark of Reggio Emilia. It involves taking pictures or videos of the child while doing his/her work. The teacher carefully analyzes the children‟s understanding of their experiences as well as skills that are tapped during that moment. Documentation also makes the process visible to the parents. It is a pictorial and commentary map of a child‟s output, memories and ideas. ISMILE teachers across all branches in Indonesia consistently apply documentation. Family In Reggio Emilia, the presence of family is the fundamental component to the success of the school. Family participation is very essential as parents engage in school activities. It opens the mind and the hearts of parents to strategies that will make them understand how to support the growth and development of their child. The teachers are partners with children and family in the education process. Humbly Yours, Lycel T. Arboleda Special thanks to the management and staff of Miniapolis, Plaza Indonesia headed by Ms.Prettny Hartono for providing the venue for the very first Project Work Exhibit of ISMILE I S M I L E G A Z E T T E P A G E 2 K2 Bellezza’s Magic Show By: Ms.Ying The K2 children have been spellbound and bedazzled! They were simply unstoppable as they embarked on the project work on magic with so much passion and joy in their hearts. Together they moved as one to discover and explore each new idea with so much glee and excitement. The children were responsible in drafting all the activities and in planning the direction that the Project on Magic will take. P lans were drafted and revised many times but the yearning to put up their own magic show was never diminished. It was something that they owned themselves and the output of their efforts and hard work. With a trick or two in tow and magic tools to pull, the children put up a magic show like no other. They did so with so much flair and pizzazz! The parents, teachers and the students who came to watch were awed not necessarily from the tricks that they performed but from their passion and fervor to come up with a show that was the true essence of their toil and labor. True to the tradition of a Reggio Emilia setting, the K2 children in a concerted effort with the teachers and parents became collaborators to make a worthwhile and meaningful project work. There wasn‟t any doubt that a “magical” spell has been cast! From Show And Tell to Public Speaking By: Ms. Vim The Bandung K2‟s spent almost one term researching and scrutinizing every little thought and ideas, while coming up with unen ding questions about the double-decker bus. It was as though they breathed and ate “double-decker bus” as there were many testimonies from parents that the children talked intensely about what they were doing in school and connected so many things around them with the double-decker. That was the very process that enabled the Bandung K2‟s to expound confidently the knowledge they have gathered over a term. At the end of the project the parents were invited to attend a “Child-Led Conference” in the class. Little did they know , that was the beginning of their little “Double-Decker Bus Road Show”. Two weeks later the Bandung K2‟s were given the opportunity to showcase their “Double–Decker Bus Project” at the Miniapolis, Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta. These children took centre stage playing their different roles. Matthew was the scientist that formulated the functionality o f the double-decker bus. Joan was the historian that knew origins and progression of the double-decker bus. The research and development expert was Nathan. He looked into the improvements of the double-decker buses. Kenichi was the innovative engineer that was always figuring out how he can transform a double -decker bus to fit different functions. Finally, Aiko was the proud owner of the bus company, who shared about her buses, the routes and the state of the art double-decker bus services. They all brought their knowledge to live amidst a large audience. They even spontaneously answered questions from their fellow peers during the presentation. Each one of them communicated their thoughts so profoundly. These young children not only painstakingly completed their double-decker bus project but they also mastered the difficult skill of public speaking. With this skill in hand these children are one step ahead of their peers, as they will have the confidence that they‟ll need to meet and greet future challenges. This is a proven fact as one of the very timid K2 child spoke the loudest with great poise. We are glad to say th at here in ISMILE we are molding and raising confident yet critical young leaders. I S M I L E G A Z E T T E P A G E 3 By: Ms. Lycel The first K2 class in the Plaza Indonesia branch consisted only of eight children, and yet the areas and subtopics they would like to explore were numerous and varied for their project work – types of planes, functions of each type of plane, passenger jets, parts of a passenger jet, air travel, passenger jet personnel, how to be a pilot, airports, travel documents, travel agencies, and airfares per country! The children showed passion in their work and data gathering. It has been said that „it takes a village to raise a child.‟ Project Work was the perfect avenue to test this popular belief. Situated in a mall, we had access to a variety of resources. We are in the heart of the city and many sites and offices are within reach. We visited Panorama Tours for information on travel documents, airfare, and popular holiday destinations around the world. Aaron wanted to know how much is the ticket going to Europe, while Monique had to ask what the passport is for. We also marvelled at the collection of old World War II fighter planes on display at the Museum Satria Mandala. Aside from various sites, many adults contributed to the children‟s research – First Officer Davide Cenzuales from Lion Air visited us in school to answer a few questions. Ishmael wanted to know if he studied to be a pilot, while Ethan asked what the men waving their hands around in the flight line were called (airport ramp agent). The parents also contributed to the children‟s experience by providing pictures they have taken while on board an airplane. They also supplied us with various recyclable materials for the model planes and other 3D projects. The final component that made all these possible was the school and classroom environment. The children were given access to the internet through the use of various gadgets such as tablets, laptop computers, and net books. They used www.google.com and www.youtube.com alongside resource books available in school. The Smart Board was also at their disposal for interactive learning and viewing. The school atelier was equipped with various loose parts and raw materials for the production of various evidences of learning – this was where the various languages of children came to life. Project Work has the components and ideals of a Reggio Emilia-inspired approach. It taps into the innate strength of the child and allows him to take charge of his learning. The physical elements, time, and even resources - human, raw materials, and technology – are all present and provide support to the child‟s exposition, discovery and experimentation. It is a fresh addition to all the academic targets of the K2 level , which supports a holistic development. Destination 1 and 2: Ocean Dream Samudra and Learning Eco Farm, Ancol By: Ms. Hana and Ms. KIm The N2 & K1 classes in ISMILE Bellezza had their field trip last March 5 in Ancol – Ocean Dream Samudra. The children were able to watch two shows: Sea lion and Dolphin show. The children enjoyed watching the tricks that the sea lions and dolphins did that day. After watching two shows the children were hungry and sweaty from all the walking they did. The children had their lunch in Ocean Dream and left Ancol at around 1PM. It was hot and tiring day but the children enjoyed the trip and had fun watching the animal shows. The Nursery 1 in ISMILE Bellezza went on a field trip to Learning Eco Farm in Ancol on March 11. The aim of the trip is to immerse the children in nature as they learn more about planting and different kinds of plants and animals. The children made their own clay sculptures. They fed different animals like the rabbits and billy goats and they ha ppily observed the ducks follow their leader. They passed by a green house where they saw vegetables, flowers and fruits. They were a ll excited to name all the fruits, flowers and vegetables that they saw like lemons, passion fruit, and dragon fruit. The children wore a farmer‟s hat as they went in a field with shovels to dig into the soil and plant some seeds. To end their great adventure, th ey rested in the Gazebo and ate their lunch. It was great day at The Learning Eco Farm. Destination 3: Museum of Bank Indonesia By: Ms. Ana Students of ISMILE Plaza Indonesia (N1-K2) were all set for an educational trip last March 6, 2015 to visit Museum of Bank Indonesia. They were all welcomed by the museum‟s staff. Each student was given a ticket and all the fun began! Upon entering the mini theatre, the children were amazed to see cascading stars and shiny coins by the wall. They watched a simple but informative video clip that taught kids on how to value and handle money with care. The museum showcased on how banking system and transactions worked in the early 1900‟s. Old coin banks called, “celengan ayam” were displayed to inform the children by how people saved money long time ago. A vault that contained gold bars was another thing that captured the students‟ interest. Currencies from different countries were also displayed in another vault. Excitement and curiosity were seen in the faces of K1 students as they tried using the ATM machines. The entire museum trip was interactive. It educated the students on Indonesia‟s history about money. This experience helped the young ones to improve their social skills and independence. Destination: 4: Saung Angklung Udjo, Bandung By: Ms. Rika On March 16th, 2015, ISMILE Bandung visited Saung Angklung Udjo. Here the children came to know Sundanese musical instruments and Sundanese culture. At Saung Angklung Udjo, they saw bamboo trees surrounding the place and heard the sound of Sundanese traditional musical instrument, angklung, made of bamboo, playing on their way to the concert hall. The children watched several shows such as a traditional Indonesian dance, angklung orchestra and wayang golek performance. The children‟s most favorite part was getting the chance to play the angklung. They received angklung with numbers on it and they played the instrument together. The MC gave them instructions on how to play some songs such as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. The children made such beautiful music together. At the end, everybody came together to the stage, sharing the joy and fun in music and dance. From this fieldtrip to Saung Angklung Udjo, the children experienced a lot of things. They realized how easy it is to play a ngklung and they are now more knowledgeable about Sundanese culture. The teachers‟ hope that through exposing these children to their heritage and culture they will learn to appreciate their roots and help to preserve it. I S M I L E P AGE G A Z E T T E 6 Infant and Toddler’s Day Extravaganza By: Ms. Elvy, Ms. Joy and Ms. Jullianne ISMILE BELLEZZA It was always fun indeed to see Mom, Dad and our little ones participating in the activities as a team. The teachers started the day with the “find my baby cow” game. Daddies stayed on the left side of the classroom, blindfolded, while Mommy and the children stayed on the right side. The goal of the game was to find their children by just listening to the instructions of the mommies. Some of the children run towards their dad and won the game easily. The parents in the classroom had a chance to experience a whole day program in school, this way; they get a better idea on what their child does in every session. Teachers also had an opportunity to share the objectives of activities done in class. Aside from the excitement that our moms and dads exhibited in playing the musical instruments, they also participated during music and movement class. Our otherwise reserved parents joined with so much enthusiasm in creating the artworks at the farm. They painted the duck and pasted the feathers, did some sponge painting on the cow and tried finger printing on the pig in the mud. We ended the activities by playing eggs on the basket. It was truly a fun and fulfilling event for everyone! ISMILE PLAZA INDONESIA One of the goals of ISMILE is to create camaraderie among the ISMILE community and the families that nurture the children. Despite the busy schedule of parents, they were able to attend and participate in the games and activities that were prepared. A mother proudly said: “I really dressed up in my pajama for this event.” There was a mommy and baby presentation showcasing their baby‟s skill in identifying words through flash cards. The tots truly enjoyed the ball rel ay game and the obstacle race. The highlight of the event was our smelling game. The parents were blindfolded and asked to smell their own babies. Their sense of smell and motherly / fatherly instincts were put on a test. Some missed, but most of them were able to shout triumphantly, “This is my child!” The audience and other co-parents cheered every time a mom or a dad guessed their bundle of joy correctly. To end our program, a “Thank You” message was given to each couple, to show how grateful we were of their presence, sumptuous food was also shared. This was truly a memorable day of laughter, giggles and most especially kinship. ISMILE BANDUNG It‟s an “Insect Paradise” for Infant and Toddlers‟ Day in ISMILE Bandung. Adorable looking insects filled the hall of ISMILE Bandung as the students and teachers of the Infant and Toddlers dressed-up in their best bug costumes. As the students were waiting for their other friends to arrive, they had the chance to have their pictures taken in the photo booth and on the stage. The event started off with a parade in the playground after which, the students and parents played several games such as “Sip the Nectar”, “Hunt My Insects”, and “Guess Who am I”. An obstacle race also had the tots practice acquired skills in “Fly like a Bee” (transferring activity) , “Crawl like a Caterpillar, “Hop like a Grasshopper” (jumping through a set of tires) and “Free like a Butterfly (unwrapping a gift with a butterfly pin). Such activities w eren‟t only fun-filled but also featured the developing fine and gross motor skills, senses and social skills of the children. To wrap up the event, the children (along with their parents and caregivers) crafted colorful caps accessorized with felt cut insects and their initials. As a follow-up of the fun-filled event, the Toddlers went to the Skyfield Garden and Lactasari in Paris Van Java (PVJ) to have their mini field trip last March 5. The Toddlers visited the butterfly garden where the kids enjoyed taking pictures with the different species of butterflies that were fluttering around and even perching on their heads and shoulders. The enthusiasm of the toddlers to interact with animals was apparent as they eagerly fed them. Some of the children were so brave as they fed the animals by themselves and even refused help from their mommies and caregivers. ISMILE BELLEZZA ISMILE PLAZA INDONESIA ISMILE BANDUNG Happy Lunar New Year! By: Ms. Cindy, Ms. Sandy and Ms. Dewi Chinese New Year, the most celebrated among all the Chinese holidays by billions of people across the world, was celebrated simultaneously on all ISMILE centers on February 18. This traditional festivity has been celebrated for more than four thousand years. It came abou t to mark the end of the long winter season and the beginning of spring. During this special day, classes in ISMILE Bellezza performed Chinese songs on stage with various themes. Songs about friendship and leadership were performed by the children. Zhang Lao Shi and Vivian Lao Shi prepared the children for more than two weeks with the help from the class teachers. To celebrate the occasion, each class had their food sharing with delicious Chinese dishes and snacks prepared by the supportive parents. The children also brought home ang pao filled with chocolate coins and an orange to symbolize wealth and fortune. On the morning of February 18 in ISMILE Plaza Indonesia, children lined up at the entrance of the school, displaying their traditional Chinese outfits. They paraded around Miniapolis, singing Mandarin songs, as a lively dragon would! After doing so, the parade headed to the Hi deout area and settled down. The program opened with a prayer, classes performed their dances, and K2 explained in Mandarin the Chinese customs. The Lunar New Year event in Bandung was divided into two parts; with the Infant and Toddler students, their parents and nanni es dancing and playing games at 9.00 a.m. while the Nursery and Kindergarten classes sang and danced to Chinese music at 11 a.m. Lily Lao Sh i had prepared the children for a month prior to the said event. It was well attended by parents who wore Chinese outfits just like their childr en. The parents also distributed angpao to the children after the program and a small get together party with Chinese food was shared by kids, par ents and staff. The festive Chinese event may have ended but the wonderful memories will never fade! I S M I L E G A Z E T T E P AGE 7 PETS ON PARADE By: Ms. Venice, Ms. Christine and Ms. Joy After a week of activities and lessons about different pets and pet care, ISMILE Bellezza had their annual Pet Parade event on February 6, 2015. The children came in various animal costumes with their favorite stuffed-animals as well. Everyone was beaming with excitement as they danced along the songs “King of the Jungle” and “Free as a Bee” which was led by the K1 A and B students. The exhilarating praise and worship was then followed by K2‟s impressive choral recitation entitled “The Ant and the Dove”. Soon after, everyone paraded and headed out to the Albergo Garden while holding their stuffed toys and waving their animal flags. The children were all ecstatic when they saw the different animals waiting for them. The garden was turned into a mini safari, where dogs were running around, different kinds of birds, turtles, ducks, fish, a wallaby, and even a snake were on display. The kids were able to see and experience all the animals up close. Even the parents‟ joined in the fun and had their pictures taken with the different pets. It was a fun and memorable day for the children, parents, and teachers as they were able to appreciate God‟s little creatures. A big thank you was extended to our wonderful parents for their continuous support! Giraffe, dog, lion, bees, dinosaur, bunnies and elephants came alive in Plaza Indonesia as children came in school on February 06, wearing their animal costumes. Following the guidelines and restrictions from the PI Mall, some children brought their pets such as cat and bunnies in cages. Curious looks peeked from the cages and caresses were aplenty as the children felt the texture of all the animals present. Every class had fun making their own animal arts and crafts. Our friends from JAAN (Jakarta Animal Aid Network) also came. Natalie Stewart, an animal rights advocate, was our resource person. She spoke on how to take care of animals. The children saw how maltreated animals were after being rescued. It was an enlightening talk from them. After the talk, the children strutted and paraded their costumes around the area. The children danced merrily to praise songs: “Free as a Bee” and “King of the Jungle”. Next, they watched a play about gentleness. The children learned to be gentle with others most especially to their pets. Games and performances followed and the N1’s had fun with their animal sorting and freeze games. Over at ISMILE Bandung, one might ask, "Is there a mini zoo in school?" You would believe so if anyone came to visit the center‟s playground last February 6. In honor of our furry, feathery and scaly friends, students and parents brought in their beloved pets for showcasing. Aside from bringing their pets (or favorite animal stuffed toy) for show and tell, the children dressed up in animal costumes and paraded around the school vicinity looking so charming in their colorful outfits. After that, everyone gathered in the hall for songs and games celebrating our animal companions. A meet and greet the pets activity followed at the playground. Dogs, cats, turtles (one baby sea turtle even made it to the event), hamsters, rabbits, birds, snails, and even a hedgehog were exhibited for the students to interact with. They were fed, petted, and others even posed with the animals for picture taking. It was such an enjoyable day! Meera Joseph Executive Principal Curiosity and Critical Thinking By: Ms. Jackie How does being curious foster critical thinking of our children? Ms. Venice and I had an opportunity to attend a seminar last Monday, 09 March at Global Sevilla Pulo Mas Campus in Jakarta Timur. We were joined by Ms. Den and Ms. Sandy from ISMILE Plaza Indonesia, and Ms. Nia and Ms. Ratna from ISHINE. This seminar for teachers was a Professional Development Roundtable on Curiosity and Critical Thinking. “Stop teaching content but teach the children how to think,“ said the speaker, Ms. Alison Davis. Ms. Davis is a passionate educator working with instructional change for innovation in instruction. She has a wealth of educational experience internationally and uses her extensive networks to inform and inspire teachers and transform learning outcomes for students. In her sharing, she capitalized more on primary English and Science where she pointed the importance of scaffolding and modeling. Teachers and adults must help the children develop language that will build structure and fluency. We need to model the right and correct structure of language without putting down the child. Open-ended questions are favored to build thinking readers who will talk more and read like detectives. Children must be encouraged to look for clues, to ask questions, to make their case, to prove it, and to own the discourse. The key to long-term learning is about children connecting, thinking, talking, reading and writing. These skills are what we aim to develop among ISMILE and ISHINE children as we give them interesting, engaging and explicit activities that will foster 21 st century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. HOW TO DETECT SPEECH OR LANGUAGE DELAY IN CHILDREN By: Ms. Rina Last March 6, 2015, ISMILE PLAZA INDONESIA hosted a seminar on Speech and Language Development in children. Teachers from different ISMILE Centers, Bellezza, Plaza Indonesia and ISHINE came to learn about how to recognize speech and language delay among children in school. The speaker who shared her expertise on the subject was Ms. Alissa Ann Z. Lungay-Martires, a certified Speech Pathologist from the Philippines. The speaker gave a checklist on red flags to watch out for that may indicate language and speech delay in children. Red flags for a speech or language delay include: No babbling by 9 months No first words by 15 months No consistent words by 18 months No word combinations by 24 months Slowed or stagnant speech development Problems understanding your child‟s speech at 24 months of age; strangers having problems understanding your child‟s speech by 36 months of age Not showing an interest in communicating She also stressed on the importance of early intervention and therapy. If in case your child shows some of the red flags above, it is encouraged that you seek professional help from general or developm ental paediatricians or occupational and speech pathologists.
