ntroduction
We Indians are avid lovers of jewellery, we consider them to be the
ultimate symbol of prosperity. It can be partially attributed to our cultural
roots. India was very rich and prosperous; gold, diamonds and precious
stones were in abundance in the royal times. Some of the world’s biggest
diamonds like the “Kohinoor” have been mined here. It has always been
our custom to wear jewellery in our everyday life. Even our gods and
goddesses are adorned with the most exquisite jewellery.
This book is our humble effort to throw a little bit of light on your precious
pieces and how to make them everlasting.
G
old is among the most
loved precious metals in the
world. It makes wonderful
ornament to wear as well as a
great hedge against inflation
and falling markets. Another
significant attribute of gold is
that it can be liquidated easily
around the world. It is to be
noted that there are variations
in gold purity and price.
In addition to yellow gold, white
gold and rose gold are also popular
options. Mixing in white metals,
such as palladium or silver in
combination, creates white gold.
4 Identification:
This identification is often
controlled through a hallmarking
system. The Government of India
has identified BIS as a sole agency
and the BIS hallmarking scheme
has been aligned with the
international criteria on
hallmarking.

Generally diamond is graded
on the scale of its whiteness.
But some rare coloured
diamonds can have higher
value.
Carat is a unit of weight,
not size. One carat (1ct)
weighs 200 milligrams.

Make sure you take off
jewellery when having a
bath/shower, exercising or
doing some physical work
and before going to bed. Store
your jewellery in separate
chamois leather pouches so
that they don't scratch each
other.
• Even though diamond is one of
the hardest materials in nature,
a sharp, sudden blow can still
chip it.
• Chlorine can damage and
discolor the mounting on your
diamond jewellery. Keep your
diamond away from chlorine
bleach or other household
chemicals. You should also
remove your diamond jewellery
before entering a chlorinated
pool or hot tub.
• Clean your diamonds regularly
using a commercial jewellery
cleaner and water or mild
detergent. Dip the jewellery
into the solution and use a soft
brush to dislodge dust or dirt from
under the setting.
• Avoid touching your clean
diamonds with your fingers.
Handle clean jewellery by its edges.
Although platinum is a rare,
wear-resistant metal, it’s a
very white metal that will
require professional polishing
to keep it shining brightly. It’s
necessary to bring platinum
jewellery to a professional
jeweller for polishing
because it involves several
finishing and polishing
processes to abrade this very
dense metal.
Gold
Unlike silver, gold does not
oxidize. But gold jewellery
tends to darken over time.
Storing it in soft cloth
containers can help maintain
the look longer.
• Remove all gold jewellery before
showering or cleaning. Soap can
cause a film to form on gold
jewellery, making it appear dull and
dingy.
• To clean your jewellery at home,
you'll find many commercial
cleaners available. In addition, you
will find a soft chamois cloth an
effective and inexpensive way to
keep your pieces lustrous and
shining.
Platinum
You can remove
tarnish with jewellery
cleaner, or by using
soap and water
mixed with a few
drops of ammonia.
Carefully brush with
a soft bristle brush.
An old toothbrush
can also be used.
After the brushing,
simply rinse with
lukewarm water and
allow to dry.
• Platinum jewellery can be
cleaned the same way as other
fine jewellery.
• Store your platinum jewellery
separately and with care, not
allowing pieces to touch each
other because even platinum
can be scratched.
• Signs of wear such as scratches
can eventually appear on
platinum. However, due to the
metal's durability there is
usually little metal loss from the
scratch.

Silver
Silver is
chemically
known as
Argentum
(‘Ag’). Unlike
gold, silver easily
reacts with oxygen
which makes it turn
black. Just rub the surface
of the jewellery with an
impregnated polishing cloth
once a day.
Costume Jewellery
Costume jewellery requires
high maintenance. By
cleaning them after every
use and protecting them
from sweat, perfume, cream
and anything foreign will
help keep their shine longer.
Gem Stones
Gem stone jewellery is
usually cleaned in an
ultrasonic bath when given
at a jewellery store. The
jewellery comes out
bright and clean. Tough
stones such as diamonds
can be cleaned at home. Just
use some warm water
infused with mild soap and
gently rub it over the stone
with soft cloth.
Pearl
A Pearl can lose its
lustre and colour when
worn frequently. This is
because of its organic
nature which makes it
sensitive to various
chemicals present in
perfumes, hair sprays
and creams. So be sure
to change strings
annually.

Gemstones
A gemstone or gem (also called a
fine gem, jewel, precious or
semi-precious stone) is a piece
of crystal (mineral), which, in
cut and polished form, is used
to make jewellery or other
adornments. Most gemstones
are hard, but some
soft minerals are
used in
jewellery
because of their
lustre or other
physical
properties that
have aesthetic
value. Rarity is
another
characteristic
that lends value
to a gemstone.

Its hard to distinguish
in terms of looks
between Kundan and
Polki because they look
so similar. However
Polki is uncut
diamonds, therefore
more expensive.
Rub with clean dry soft
cotton cloth and store
your kundan and polki
jewellery in separate
chamois leather
pouches to maintain
them.
Kundan
Kundan is cut glass
set in gold with
Meena (colourful

similar look as
polki.
Jadau
Jadau is simply a way
of using Kundan, Polki
& Meenakari in an
engraved setting. Gold
foil is used to set Polki.
Meenakari is done at
the back and sides to
enhance the beauty of
the ornament.

AS AN INVESTMENT
OPTION
There are two primary reasons why
you need to invest in gold.
Over a period of time, the return
on gold investment is in line with
the rate of inflation.
It is worth investing in gold for
one more very valid reason. That is
gold is negatively correlated to
equity investments. Say for
example 2007 onwards, the equity
markets started performing poorly
whereas the gold has performed
well. So having gold as an
investment option in your
portfolio mix will help you reduce
the overall volatility of your
portfolio.
Investing
in diamonds
Return on gold
investment
Is it profitable to invest in gold?
This investment proved
remarkable from 2006 to
2011.During that time span,
Gold has given average return of
29% per annum which was any
day better than other investment
options. The long term average
return on gold investment is
more than 10% p.a.
Diamonds are precious, rare,
mysterious, beautiful, magical and
romantic tokens of love. Diamonds are
considered as a secure investment.
They also give you the feeling of beauty,
luxury, belonging, passion and love. No
other financial investment can offer you
that much!
• High Value storage with anonymity
• Protection against inflation, market
collapse, currency reforms
• World-wide convertibility
• Hardly any maintenance cost
• Very prestigious
• Finally, while most of the other
luxurious goods, such as cars,
furniture etc. lose their value over
time, this is not the case with
diamonds, precisely because of its
durable/unbreakable nature.

Jewellery Lovers’ Guide
As an object of fashion, it is
interesting to note that
jewellery design has
remained relatively
constant over the years.
Traditionally jewels were seen as
sacred and precious; however,
notably beginning in the 1900s,
jewellery has started to be
objectified. Additionally, no one
trend can be seen as the history of
jewellery design for this time
period. Throughout the twentieth
century jewellery design
underwent drastic and continual
style changes.
Customised jewellery is
personalized jewellery, through
which a customer gets her
ornament made on her interest
and fancy. This is a phenomenon
that became very popular in
India. One can ask for various
personal touches and get
everything made as per his or her
ideas. Skilled artisans of
ornament, famous for their craft,
are appointed for these tasks.
Jewellery design is always
continuous and fluid while
simultaneously timeless.

Last but not the least, your
jewellery needs to be stored
when you are not using them.
This sometimes becomes a
challenge. You need to keep
them handy so that they are
available when you want to
wear them and also keep them
safely, on the other hand.
Different people find different
solutions to this problem.
Some have secret hiding place
at home while others prefer
the safety of bank lockers. No
matter what your call is, you
always need to store them
properly so that they don’t get
ruined due to mishandling.
USEFUL TIPS:
Earrings:
Never place earrings loose in a
jewellery box they should be
stored on an individual earring
pad that allows separate face
up storage for each earring
with the friction or screw back
attached.

Pendants & Chains :
Disarranged, tangled and knotted
chains during storage can damage
your jewellery. It can also be very
frustrating trying to untangle when
you have an appointment. Jewellery
boxes that have pendant hooks built
into the inner lid or a side panel will
allow you to store the chains in the
hanging position and secure the
pendant itself snugly inside a shirred
pouch.

Gems & Diamonds:
Some gemstones are quite soft and
easily damaged by hard gemstones
like diamonds. It's not just a cunning
example of De beers marketing
strategy, it's a diamond fact, a
diamond is forever! Emerald rings,
Antique Diamond engagement rings
and sapphire rings should be stored
upright in a ring tray and Emeralds
should not be in constant contact
with any cloth or absorbent surface.
Never allow your diamond jewellery
to be stored loose or come into
contact with other gemstones, as it
will scratch them.
