Programme May – July 2015 www.ikon-gallery.org Free entry Pavel Büchler Ikon presents the most comprehensive UK exhibition to date by Pavel Büchler. Born in Prague in 1952 and based in this country since the 1980s, Büchler is renowned as an influential teacher and figure in the international art scene. (Honest) Work Exhibition 13 May – 12 July 2015 First and Second Floor Galleries and Tower Room Please note the Tower Room is only accessible via a number of steps Büchler’s exhibition at Ikon involves a wide range of media including text, found objects, obsolete technologies and appropriated digital material, characteristically combining philosophical scepticism with a smart sense of humour that draws attention to the fundamentally strange nature of everyday life. Visitors experience a new work by Büchler immediately on arrival at Ikon, Inside Watt (2010), comprising a text extract from Samuel Beckett’s Watt (1953) set in the style of a book page and applied to the front doors. The transition from inside to outside, and vice versa, is made through a veil of text, superimposed on what is visible beyond. Büchler’s intervention on the doors is telling, as they are the means by which visitors move between the public realm and dedicated art space, raising issues of access to art, its role in society and a tendency to exclusivity in our art worlds. 1 2 The perpetual outsider status projected onto the main protagonist in The Castle (2005), a key work in this exhibition, corresponds to an anxiety that is often engendered by cultural institutions. Involving a large installation of loudspeakers based on a 1920s design by Marconi, the work proclaims a quotation from Kafka’s The Castle: “You are not from the Castle, you are not from the village, you aren’t anything. Or rather, unfortunately, you are something, a stranger, a man who isn’t wanted and is in everybody’s way …” Broadcast through the antique sound system, the words recall street propaganda announcements as they insist that integration is impossible, that the stranger will always remain on the outside. On the other hand, Fly (2009), involves an illuminated fire exit sign and the sound of a fly buzzing inside. There is no yearning for admittance, but rather this is an innocent creature desperately trying to get out. 1 Pavel Büchler Fly (2009) Found security sign, audio 2 Pavel Büchler The Castle (2010) Installation view, DOX, Prague Ikon’s exhibition also features a number of found objects and small sculptures such as Il Castello (2007), consisting of two found pencils, and Cannon (2014), made from a billiard ball and postcard. Most of these are fortuitous combinations, brought together to create “semantic short circuits”, resulting in visual puns that are funny, subtle and subversive. Similarly the artist’s fascination with wordplay is made more explicit in his ongoing series Honest Work (2011–), unique letterpress prints made from old fashioned printing blocks. Quotations from Karl Marx to Edgar Allen Poe, from Barnett Newman to Joseph Kosuth, are sources of inspiration, as well as coincidences found within and between alphabets and numerical systems. These letterpress works constitute a bookend of an extraordinary survey, a kind of variety that conveys rare artistic ingenuity. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication, including texts by Austrian philosopher Robert Pfaller and Jonathan Watkins, Ikon Director. In addition Pavel Büchler has made a new limited edition, titled Honest Work (Silence) (2015), available exclusively at Ikon, it is a letterpress work on Arches 88 paper, 34 × 50 cm, edition of 26, priced £720. Looking to the future, we conclude our celebrations with an unprecedented fundraising auction at Sotheby’s in London on 2 July. Internationally acclaimed artists have generously donated works to be sold in aid of Ikon’s 50th Anniversary Endowment Fund, dedicated to the artistic programme and the commissioning of new art work. In this way, established artists are supporting artists of the future. Ikon also participates in Art15 (21-23 May) where we highlight a limited edition sculpture, A Real Birmingham Family, by Gillian Wearing alongside new multiples by Richard Deacon and Cornelia Parker. These initiatives place emphasis on Ikon’s identity as an educational charity, needing support now more than ever. If you would like to make a donation to Ikon’s Endowment Fund please visit www.ikon-gallery.org or call 0121 248 0708 – we hope you can join us as we start the next chapter of Ikon’s history. Future Ikon Exhibitions Jacques Nimki Seen/Unseen At Home with Vanley Burke 22 July – 27 September 2015 Born in Jamaica in 1951, artist Vanley Burke has lived in Birmingham since 1965 and is renowned as a photographer concerned especially with black culture in Britain. This summer the entire contents of his flat in Nechells, north-east Birmingham, will be transferred to Ikon’s first floor galleries. A vast archive of posters, books, clothes, records, ornaments and countless other items, it provides an invaluable insight into Birmingham’s African Caribbean communities. Ongoing installation Throughout Ikon Gallery Artist Jacques Nimki works within urban environments, using weeds and wild flowers to examine multiple ideas that focus on the unseen and how this affects what we expect to find within any environment at any given time. For the past 12 months, Nimki has been in residence at Ikon, studying the quality of light appearing and disappearing on a variety of surfaces, whilst exploring the boundaries between public and private space especially with respect to the gallery environment. His research has included a series of workshops and tours with Ikon visitors, staff, patrons and local office workers. The project has culminated in a permanent installation throughout the gallery building. More than 300 barely visible works reference plant drawings made by participants and others installed in their homes. Many unseen and others never to be seen. Nástio Mosquito 3 May – 26 July 2015 Oratorio di San Ludovico, Calle dei Vecchi, Dorsoduro 2552, Venice (Vaporetto: S. Basilio) Open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am–6pm, free entry Following our recent exhibition by Nástio Mosquito (4 February – 19 April 2015), Ikon, in collaboration with Nuova Icona, presents a selection of the artist’s work at the 56th Biennale di Venezia. In Demo da Cracía (2013), Mosquito emerges in a studio to shoot a music video for his single. In front of a large green screen, he dances and performs before breaking into a speech on Angola and identity. Fuck Africa (remix) (2015), made in collaboration with Spanish artist Vic Pereiró, is an extraordinary collage of moving images in which footage of the artist is juxtaposed with a rogues’ gallery of world leaders and celebrities. The exhibition also includes a new video work South (2015) created by Nastivicious (a collaboration between Nástio Mosquito and Vic Pereiró). www.labiennale.org Associated events Seen/Unseen Tours Thursday 28 May, 1pm – FREE Thursday 25 June, 1pm – FREE Join Jacques Nimki for a 15 minute introductory tour of his installation throughout Ikon Gallery. Takehisa Kosugi 22 July – 27 September 2015 Japanese composer and artist Takehisa Kosugi was a pioneer of experimental music in Japan in the early 1960s, closely associated with the Fluxus movement before joining the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in the 1970s. This exhibition features three of the artist’s sound installations, including one made especially for Ikon. Involving everyday materials and radio electronics they interact with wind, electricity and light, making sonic relationships between them. 7 6 Nástio Mosquito Demo da Cracía (2013) Video Courtesy Nástio Mosquito © 7 Vanley Burke Apartment (2014) Courtesy the artist Ikon is an internationally acclaimed contemporary art venue situated in central Birmingham.
