A Short Lesson on Strumming Patterns:........................................................................... 9
The last two songs are the challenge songs for the day. “Puff the Magic Dragon”, is by request, and it
introduces the chords (Em) and (D7). Make particular note of the (D7), it’s probably not what you will
find in your standard chord charts, this is the easy version of D7. And Puff is a good example of using two
different strumming patterns in the same song. “Stand by Me” on page 7 is a better sounding and easier
to sing (but harder to play) version in the Key of A, rather than C, introducing several new chords,
(F#m) (D) (E7).
Be sure to download the other handout for today, the “Lesson In Transitions”.
When to play the chord:
In the intro and solo sections, a “/” after the chord indicates how many measures to play for each chord.
One measure in a 4/4 song would be a count of 4. So in the example below, you would strum a count of
4 for the C chord four times, a count of 4 for the F chord two times, etc.
(C)//// (F)// (C)//
If there is a space between the Chord and the word, start strumming the chord before you sing the word.
If there is no space, you sing the word on the first strum of that chord.
Strumming:
We’re going to play around with strumming some more, and I’ve included a section on some different
strumming examples on the last page. If you’re a beginner, these may be something to aspire to. Don’t
worry if you’re not ready or not interested in different strumming patterns… no pressure, just strum in a
way that’s comfortable for you.

I keep a (G7)close watch on this heart of (C)mine
I keep my (G7)eyes wide open all the (C)time

Because you're (G7)mine, I walk the (C)line
I find it (G7)very, very easy to be (C)true
I find my (G7)self alone when each day is (C)through
Yes, I'll ad (F)mit that I'm a fool for (C)you
Because you're (G7)mine, I walk the (C)line
As sure as (G7)night is dark and day is (C)light
I keep you (G7)on my mind both day and (C)night
And happi(F)ness I've known proves that it's (C)right
Because you're (G7)mine, I walk the (C)line
You've got a (G7)way to keep me on your (C)side
You give me (G7)cause for love that I can't (C)hide
For you I (F)know I'd try to turn the (C)tide
Because you're (G7)mine, I walk the (C)line

Strum (Country Strum): ddu-ddu
(But I like to combine the Country Strum for one measure and the Latin Strum for the next
measure: “ddu-ddu ddu-udu”. It’s ok if we all aren’t strumming exactly the same.)
I (C)hear the train a comin' it's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine since(C7) I don't know when
I'm (F)stuck in Folsom prison and time keeps draggin' (C)on
But that (G7)train keeps a rolling, down to San An(C)tone
When (C)I was just a baby, my mama told me son
Always be a good boy don't (C7)ever play with guns
But I (F)shot a man in Reno just to watch him (C)die
Now when I (G7)hear that lonesome whistle
I hang my head and (C)cry
I (C)bet there's rich folks eating in a fancy dining car
They're probably drinking coffee and (C7)smoking big cigars
Well I (F)know I had it coming I know I can't be (C)free
But those (G7)people keep on moving
And that's what tortures (C)me
Well if they (C)free me from this prison, If that railroad train was mine
I bet I'd move it all a little (C7)farther down the line
(F)Far from Folsom prison that's where I want to (C)stay
And I'd (G7)let that lonesome whistle blow my blues a(C)way

A Short Lesson on Strumming Patterns:
If you’re having trouble learning new strumming patterns, just try strumming and counting for a
while, don’t worry about playing a song, just count and strum. After awhile the strum pattern
will be committed to “muscle memory” and you can strum it without even thinking about it.
