† Our parking lot is located on the south side of the church off Sherman Avenue. Church members
may park in the lot at any time, whether for church events or for shopping or other errands in
downtown Evanston; see the church office to get a parking pass. For Sunday morning services,
additional parking is under the Best Western Hotel or in Lot 6 on Lake Street across from the
Police and Fire Headquarters.
† There are accessible rest rooms across from the kitchen and on the lower level next to the
elevator. There are two additional rest rooms on the lower level near the meeting of the two
hallways.
† Children are welcome in our worship services. We have an attended nursery and a changing
room downstairs for parents to use, if needed. Both rooms are on the lower level. An usher can
direct you.
† The parking lot entrance is an accessible entrance. An elevator is located inside the entrance.
† If you are a visitor, please introduce yourself to our pastor or assisting minister. Please sign our
guest book in the narthex or a visitor card from the pew rack, and we will send you a packet of
information about Immanuel.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR WORSHIP
The Lutheran Service follows the historic liturgy that has evolved since the early centuries of
Christianity. We have a set form, but the content changes for each service. The content is governed
by the church year calendar and lectionary (a system of scripture readings). Sunday worship is
organized around the proclamation of the Word of God and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.
Lutheran worship books are organized so that page numbers for the liturgy are in the front part of the
book, hymn numbers are in the second part. The liturgy and hymns are printed in your bulletin, but
page numbers are provided for those wishing to follow along in the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
Receiving Holy Communion
We invite all baptized Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own churches to share with us
the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. At the
direction of the usher, come forward to the altar. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Take
the silver chalice and drink from it or dip the bread in the ceramic chalice. Return to your place via
the side aisles after you receive both elements. Those who need to receive communion sitting should
sit on an aisle and notify the pastor or an usher before the Service if you have not previously received
communion in the pew. Those who desire a blessing but not the sacrament are asked to fold their
arms over their chests.

INFORMATION ABOUT TODAY’S SERVICE
Today’s First Reading from Genesis 3 highlights what is traditionally known as the “fall,” the Bible’s first
temptation and act of disobedience by the human man and woman in the Garden of Eden. Some points
of interest about this Reading:
 God does indeed create a “good” world, but not a “perfect” world in the sense of a closed, static
and totally divinely controlled universe. “Good” in the original Hebrew means “complete” or
“total” but not “perfect.”
 Often the scene of the temptation in Eden is portrayed as the woman standing alone with the
serpent, but a careful reading suggests that the man was likely present all along.
 The central aim of Genesis 3 is to describe the mystery of sin, not to explain its origin.

Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 4: 13 - 51

But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture — "I believed, and so I spoke" — we also
believe, and so we speak, 14because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will
bring us with you into his presence. 15Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more
people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by

SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

A special coffee hour will be served by the youth group in honor of all graduates, including
Ryan Knohl from ETHS and Luke Moy from New Trier.
The Stark Committee will be meeting today after coffee in the Fellowship Hall
The Congregation Council has set a Special Meeting of the Congregation for Sunday,
June 14 at 12 noon. The purpose of the Special Meeting will be to vote on the
recommendation of the Congregation Council to Call a new Pastor. The candidate will
preach and lead worship on Sunday, June 14 at the 9:30 AM service. The Call Committee
will host a coffee hour following the service to provide the opportunity to meet, greet, and
hear from the candidate. At 12:00 noon the Special Meeting will be called to order to vote
on the recommendation to call the candidate. All confirmed members are encouraged to
be present. Proxy voting is not provided, as per the constitution.
New Community Church worship at 1:00 p.m.
We express our Christian sympathy to the family of Edgar Graf, father of Susan
Ross, who entered Eternal Life recently in New York. Services will be held there.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Seattle, chief of the Duwamish Confederacy, died 1866
Noah Seattle led a coalition of tribes, and convinced them to live peacefully with encroaching white
settlers. When he became a Roman Catholic, he held morning and evening prayer with his tribe. The city
of Seattle is named for him.
Tuesday, June 9
Columba, died 597; Aidan, died 651; Bede, died 735; renewers of the church
These three monks from the British Isles helped keep the light of learning alive during the Middle Ages.
Columba founded three monasteries off the coast of Scotland. Aidan was a pastor who led people to
works of charity. The Venerable Bede was a Bible translator, historian, and hymnwriter.
Thursday, June 11
Barnabas, Apostle
Barnabas was not numbered among the twelve apostles, but the book of Acts gives him that title. After
Paul was converted to Christianity, Barnabas welcomed him to Jerusalem, and later the two traveled
together on missionary journeys.

Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea, died 379; Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, died around 385;
Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople, died around 389; Macrina, theologian, died

The Cappadocian fathers, as the three men in this group are known, explored the mystery of the Holy
Trinity. Basil's monastic rule forms the basis for Eastern monastic life. Gregory of Nazianzus defended
orthodox Christianity in Constantinople. Gregory of Nyssa, Basil's younger brother, wrote on the
spiritual life. Macrina, older sister of Basil and Gregory of Nyssa, was the leader of a community
dedicated to asceticism, meditation, and prayer.

FAITH SHARING MEETINGS TAKE SUMMER BREAK
Those present at the Faith Sharing meeting of May 10 decided at the end of the meeting to take a break
until 10:30 worship resumes in the fall. Not because either faith or doubt takes a holiday. Instead, the
group felt it would be impracticable to meet in the hour before church in the summer, when worship
begins at 9:30.
Monthly faith sharing meetings, also known as “Speaking of Faith,” began last September. Over the nine
months, some thirty Immanuel people participated in one or another of these meetings, held in the
comfortable, informal setting of a private home or the church’s downstairs youth room. Each meeting
began with a question posed by a convener, and the discussion took off from there. People shared their
experiences of faith and doubt and discussed their convictions and questions as practicing Christians.
Chris Djuric, Anne Heider, Terri Hummel, Kit McCarthy, Kathy Skelton, Elizabeth Stegner, Steve
Warner, Marge Wold and Charly Yarnoff served as conveners.
Participants, most of whom kept coming back month after month, found their faith deepened. They
heard professions and confessions from old friends they’d never heard before and said aloud things
they’d never said, or even consciously thought, before.
Everyone hopes that we’ll have a new called pastor in the fall, but we don’t know what their plans
would be for adult education and spiritual development. But we can say that news of Immanuel’s faithsharing meetings was shared by the Call Committee with the select candidates chosen for a second
interview. (Four members of the call committee have participated in these meetings.) All the candidates
who learned this fact were positively impressed. It was one of the things about Immanuel that made us
an attractive potential call to them. So it’s safe to assume that we’ll be back at it in September.
