One-day lecture/ workshop by Catriona
MacInnes (Screen Academy Scotland)
WHEN 5.5.
FOR Directors, actors, everyone interested
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS Max. 15 + 4 actors (2
male and 2 female)
It will be a very relaxed and informal one day
workshop which explores ways you can work
with and collaborate with actors to find truthful
performance. It will also give students an
opportunity to talk about their fears around
directing actors and to try out some techniques
including improvisation, which can be used in
rehearsals and casting workshops to discover a
character or characters.
If students have script excerpts (in English) or even
just scenarios (don’t have to be in script form)
they would like to get some help with, we could
accommodate up to 4 x 1-3 page scenes. They are
welcome to submit these by this Saturday 2.5. and I
will pick 3 or 4 from the selection.
If not, I will bring some excerpts to work from and
get them to talk about their current projects on the
day.

6) CASTING
WORKSHOP
2-day workshop by Mikko Kanninen
(University of Tampere)
WHEN 7.-8.5.
FOR Everybody. Actors especially welcome.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS 12-16
Musician / composer / sound designer / actor /
teacher of creative thinking Jone Takamäki leads
you to the world of improvisation. How to use
improvisation / creative thinking for example in
sound design - how this method enhances the film.
This lecture / workshop is about opening your mind
and senses to the different creative processes in the
Art of Cinema.
Through lecturing, watching different
documentaries and exercises the participants
examine combining the image and sound, the effect
of sound & music on the suspense and atmosphere
in the film.
What are the expectations of an actor and director
in casting events? What are directors looking for?
What the actor THINKS the director is looking for?
We are trying to find some common ground and
understanding to this difficult and sometimes
painful event. Our goal is to release tensions and
misunderstandings in both sides of the camera.
In this course we film and watch each other
on different image sizes - together. The only thing
that is required to participate to this workshop, is a
positive and supportive approach to self and others!

4) “STORIES OF
OTHERS: HOW
DOCUMENTARY
FILM CAN REFLECT
SOCIETY”
1-day masterclass by Susanna Helke
(ELO Film School Helsinki)
WHEN 5.5.
FOR Everyone interested.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS Not limited.
Susanna Helke’s award-winning documentary
films are cinematic reflections of society, often
stories of young people disenfranchised by their
own community: kicked out queer youth facing
homelessness in the gay mecca of San Francisco,
young immigrant boys in the outskirts of Helsinki, or
unemployed young men in a remote area of Finland.
In this one day masterclass professor Susanna
Helke talks about her method of directing, and the
possibilities of documentary film in making visible
the invisible disparities in society - as well as the
poetics of the political in documentary filmmaking.
7) “WHAT DOES
IT MEAN TODAY,
BEING HUMAN WITH
DIGNITY?” – THE FILMS
BY JEAN-PIERRE &
LUC DARDENNE
1-day masterclass by Wouter Hessels/ RITS,
School of Arts Brussels
WHEN 7.5.
FOR Everyone.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS Not limited.
During this masterclass we will discuss the films
directed by the Dardenne brothers. We will start
from their documentary beginnings in the seventies
and end with their most recent film, “Deux jours,
une nuit / Two Days, One Night” (2014), selected for
the last Cannes filmfestival. We will talk about their
ideas, inspirations, questions, working method, style
and influences.
9) CINEMA &
SOCIETY WORKSHOP & PITCH
-half day lecture by Nigel R. Smith (Screen
Academy Scotland)
WHEN 5.5. afternoon
FOR Screenwriters, Producers, Directors - and
anyone interested in story.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS 15/16 (5 groups of 3, or
4 groups of 4)
How can films reflect society? Students will form
small workshop groups to collaborate in the creation
of a premise for a short or feature film which sheds
light on an aspect of contemporary society - and
which might carry appeal for an international
audience. They’ll then construct a verbal pitch to
deliver for group analysis/ feedback.

10) A QUICK & DIRTY
CRASH COURSE IN
CINEMATIC VR
-4-day workshop by Synes Elischka
WHEN 4.-7.5.
DESCRIPTION We have 3-4 days to make one or
two short films for the Oculus Rift. The workshop will
start with an introduction to the topic by watching
some examples and looking at the technology
behind it. Afterwards we’ll form teams to develop
a short film together. The workshop is based on
spontaneous collaboration and learning by doing.
We will have one self-built rig with 6 GoPros that
we can take outdoors and try to come up with an
interesting concept or story for VR. A second group
will play around with a more traditional approach,
shooting inside the LUME studio using a spotlight...
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE If you want to try to
develop something weird for this new medium,
you’re welcome. I’m hoping primarily for motivated
filmmakers with a do-it-now attitude and good
improvisation skills who don’t shy away from acting
themselves and are happy to help others with their
projects, or to develop something together in a small
team. Sound designers and cinematographers are
also welcome to join the experience.
