This month will deal with suspended chords based on extended chords. Example #1 moves from a suspended C7sus4 chord to a C7 chord. Example #2 demonstrates a C7sus4 chord moving to a Cm7 chord. Example #3 has an extended chord, namely; a C9sus4 move to a Cm9 chord. These chord progressions are used frequently in Jazz harmonies. Jazz musicians often extend their chords to create more interest and complexity to the harmonic tapestry. Example #7 uses very extended and complex chordal harmonic movement. The first chord is a C13sus4 which moves to a Cm11 chord. Again, this is a very sophisticated, lush chord progression. Examples #8, #9 are cadential progressions based on extended chordal harmonies. The progression is a V9 to Im7sus4 to Im7. In example #10, the chordal progression is a Vm9 to a Im9sus4 to a Im9. Experiment with theses extended harmonies and see if you can incorporate them into your own songwriting and playing. ! © 2012 David Howard. What was so different about Randy’s approach to this way of performing arpeggios using two hands? Unlike Eddie Van Halen’s approach on the ground breaking composition “Eruption”, Randy added an extra note to the arpeggio sequence; namely, the fourth note of each four note arpeggiated sequence. This makes Randy’s tapping technique more intense and challenging to perform in a consistent manner, particularly at very fast tempos, but is well worth the effort in acquiring this technique. As usual, please remember to use a metronome to practice these arpeggios with. This will help immensely with the timing between the respective hands. Have some fun with this one. I sincerely hope that this months piece, motivates my students to explore further into the two handed approach to playing the guitar. The usual phrygian harmonies and flat 2nd approaches are evident throughout each example lending a moody and dramatic harmonic approach to what would otherwise be a static and predictably traditional chordal usages. The pathos one encounters with the dark and dramatic phrygian harmonies are striking. Randy Rhodes Bi-Dextral Tapping To perform this piece properly it is helpful to play through a high gain (preferably dual channel) amplifier that either compresses the sound naturally, for example; a fully tube amplifier, or through the use of a compression pedal. The use of compression will help even out each group of four notes and will give the notes more sustain and presence. ! © 2012 David Howard.
