Since its conception Chord has grown substantially and won
contracts to supply the most discerning ears in the world,
including EMI’s Abbey Road and Air Studios, and the studios
of Sony, Decca and Quad Recording in New York. Chord
products are also specified for the highest performance
installations, including The Royal Opera House in London,
and Skywalker Studios to name but a few.
The company was founded in 1989 by John Franks who had
previously held Directorships with Astec, the world leader in
high frequency power supplies, Raytheon and AT&T. With
unique offices at The Pumphouse, a beautifully restored and
fully modernised historical building on the River Medway,
Chord has some of the most extensive and advanced
computerised design facilities in the country.
The combination of design flair, innovation and expert
assembly have been brought together, along with first class

The range was developed to satisfy the need for good looking small audiophile equipment – a niche
which was sparked by the critically acclaimed DAC64 and is now completed with introduction of
the ‘Blu’ CD transport.

Each stunning item is hand crafted from solid aluminium and weighs in excess of 6kg. So, although

he Chord CD Transport has been designed to match, both in performance and style, the highly successful DAC64
and also completes the Chord Choral range. For the first time, customers can complete their Chord system with
a truly stunning source component. Called Blu the CD Transport shares the same ground breaking technology
that has made the DAC64 one of the most successful Digital to Analogue Converters ever produced. As a dedicated
state-of-the-art, 2-channel CD Transport, Blu takes full advantage of the WTA Filter technology used in the DAC by
having it's own 4096-tap, 80-bit WTA filter.
With features like selectable up sampling from 44.1 to 176kHz and a dedicated word clock input, Blu can be also used
successfully outside a dedicated Chord system. The digital connections on offer are; 2 x AES/EBU and 2 x BNC for
dual data output, 1 x BNC & Toslink optical for standard data output (all selectable via
a toggle switch), 1 x BNC input for word clocking synchronisation, selectable output
sampling frequencies: 44.1kHz, 88.2kHz and 176kHz.

Stereo Pre-Amplifier
The ‘Prima’ pre-amplifier, meets all the expectations
of the ultimate levels of performance set by Chord
with it’s stunning control, hi-end audio performance
and jewel like design features. The ‘Prima’ operates
Chord’s dual bus system, which allows you to tape
from any source, while listening to any other. It also
hosts Chords new UHF designed Power Supply.
The audio circuit is designed using fully balanced
line internal architecture and offers six input gain
adjustments independently for the five inputs and
low impedance outputs.
Stereo Power-Amplifier
The ‘Mezzo 50’ power amplifier is based on Chords
tried and tested power supply technologies, using
specially designed dual Ultra High Frequency power
supplies with an additional unique drive circuitry
power supply operating at over 1.2Mhz, a design
only made possible within the last year. This allows
the amplifier to store a great deal more energy with
far more efficiency than any other amplifier of its
size. This gives the amp reserves of instantly
deliverable, precisely controlled power which is
more than capable of driving the most demanding
loudspeakers, all from the amazingly sleek and
stunningly designed chassis.

We bombarded this amplifier with classical, blues and
jazz recordings which feature difficult to reproduce
passages. Our auditioning recordings included Todo Sobre
Di Madre which contains delicate inner detail, brass, strings,
tympani, unique classical program material coupled with
equally unique jazz styles. This CD is a total workout for
audio systems and, with only a few exceptions, will burden
any amplifier under the sun. The SPM 4000 handled this
program material with utmost ease, stunningly faithful
to the instruments’ sound and gracefully melodic. Turn
this amplifier on, sit back and relax, with some of the best
solid state sound currently on the market. This isn’t just
another good amplifier, this one is great.

Chord has used more than one HF supply in a
single amp before, but the SPM 12000 deliberately
doesn’t synchronise the six PSUs: it uses them free
running, in order that their (very fast) heartbeats
run out of sync. Where a single SMPS module
pulses 80,000 times per second (compared with the
recharge cycle of 50 times for a regular supply),
the bank of six 4kW supplies delivers an average
480,000 pulses per second. In short, when the driver
stage or output stage of the actual amplifier
requests power, to deliver the transitory dynamics
of music – it’s got it...for many, this outlines the

Touch Screen
System Remote Control
To compliment all products currently using a remote
control, Chord have now added a fully programmable
touch screen remote. Pre-programmed to control all the
products in the range, the system remote can control up to
10 devices with 42 commands per device. With a subtle blue
backlight on the touch screen and mechanical buttons the unit
is very easy to operate whatever the lighting conditions.
Black Casework
This unit comes standard with the DSP 8000 AV Processor and the
Choral Prima pre-amplifier, but can be bought separately for use with
any other Chord pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier.
