BUSINESS SEMINARS 2 GLIMPSES OF INDIA FESTIVAL Pursuant to the mutual understanding reached during visit of Premier Li Keqiang to India in May 2013 and of then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to China in October 2013, the year 2014 was designated as Year of Friendly Exchanges (YoFE). To mark the YoFE, Embassy of India and the Consulates in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guangzhou celebrated the Glimpses of India Festival Cities Covered 1. Beijing 2. Shanghai 3. Hong Kong 4. Guangzhou 5. Taizhou 3 The Logo The colorful logo designed for the Glimpses of India Festival consists of a Kathakali and a Beijing Opera mask side by side. It was chosen to depict the Indian and Chinese cultures that are shown to be seamlessly blending into one another, thus mirroring the long tradition of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. While the Kathakali dance involves delicate use of hand and eye gestures to communicate, masks in Beijing Opera symbolize different characters and emotions. This convergence of elements from great art forms of the two countries reflects the centuries-old civilizational contacts between India and China. Logo of Glimpses of India Festival Encompassed within a circle, a symbol of perfection, and with Indian and Chinese colors and motifs symbolizing happiness and celebration, the logo represents the spirit of cooperation and harmony underlying the ‘Glimpses of India Festival’. The inauguration was followed by a mesmerizing performance by Kalakshetra Repertory Company. Inaugraton of Glimpses of India Festival in Shanghai by Mr. Ravindra Singh, Secretary Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Mr Cai Wei, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) & Consul General of India, Shanghai Mr. Naveen Srivastava The troupe performed dance drama based on scenes from Ramayana at the prestigious Shanghai Oriental Arts Center in Kalashetra Repertory Company performing at the Pudong, Shanghai. The Opera Hall of the Oriental Arts Center Shanghai Oriental Arts Center was packed with an audience of more than 1000 local Chinese residents who witnessed the fascinating performance. Senior leaders and officials from Shanghai, and provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang were also present for the performance. Similar performance was also made on the next day as well. 8 Beijing: The “Glimpses of India Festival” in Beijing was inaugurated on 11th May 2014 with a cultural performance at the Beijing Poly Theater. The Assistant Foreign Minister Mr. Liu Jianchao was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Ambassador Ashok K. Kantha and Secretary Culture to the Government of India, Mr. Ravindara Singh made opening remarks at the opening. A second performance by the “Kalashetra” troupe was organized, subsequently, at Beijing’s prestigious Tsinghua University. Ambasador Ahok K. Kantha & Professor Ms. Chen Xu Chairperson of Tsinghua University with artists after the performance Professor Chen Xu, Chairperson, University Academic Council delivered the welcome and opening remarks at the performance. Ambassador Ashok K. Kantha also addressed the student community on this occasion. Over 1400 people from Beijing’s art, cultural, government, academic and educational circles attended Kalashetra’s Poly Theater performance. About 700 students were present the performance at the Tsinghua University. Kalashetra performing at the Poly Theater in Beijing Students from the Renmin University attended in large numbers as well. 9 Chengdu: On May 14, Ambassador along with the Deputy Mayor of Chengdu Mr. Fu Yonglin inaugurated the “Glimpses of India” Festival with a series of dance performance by artistes from the Kalakshetra dance academy. Ambassador Mr. Ashok K. Kantha inaugurating the event at Chengdu The performance which was held at the historic Wuhou Temple Museum Theatre was attended by a wide section of the Chengdu society, including representatives of several foreign consulates, journalists, officials of several provincial and city departments and state-owned Kalashetra performing at the Wuhou Temple Museum at enterprises. The seven performances by the artistes of Chengdu Kalashetra enthralled the Chinese audiences who reciprocated by a standing ovation and presentation of flower bouquets to all the artistes. 10 Sangeet Natak Akademy Beijing: Sangeet Natak Akademi visited Beijing from 27th June to 30th June 2014. Sangeet Natak Akademi performed at the Reception Marking the 60th Anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence at the Great Hall of People. The reception which was hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping was attended from the Indian side by Hon’ble Vice President Mr. M. Hamid Ansari and Mrs. Ansari, Minister of Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman, four Members of Parliament, Foreign Secretary Ms. Sujatha Singh, Ambassador Ashok K. Kantha, Secretary to Vice President and other officials of the Embassy. From the Myanmar side the President of Myanmar Mr. Thein Sangeet Natak Akademy performing at the Great Hall of People Sein and other officials graced the occasion. Sangeet Natak Akademi gave a mesmerizing performance after which the three leaders greeted the artists. The Sangeet Natak Akademi also performed at the Meilanfang Theater on 27th and 29th June 2014 and on 30th at the Beijing Bayi High School more than 2500 Chinese witnessed the three day performance. After the performances, the artists also interacted with the audience and also answered their queries as well as taught basic dance steps of Indian classical leaving a lasting impression. Sangeet Natak Akademy at the Beijing Bayi High School 11 Kunming: To celebrate the “India-China Year of Friendly Exchanges” and 60th anniversary of the signing of the Agreement of Five Principles of Mutual Co-existence India and China, the Indian Consulate in Guangzhou organised a series of dance performances entitled ‘Saptakam’, a medley of seven Indian classical dance forms of India performed by a group of artists from Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. The performances were of very high standard and were appreciated by a large number of audience. The performances were held at Yunnan University of Nationalities, Kunming (July 02), Yunnan Normal University, Kunming (July 03), Kunming Theatre (July 04), Inauguration of India-China Yoga Summit at Dali (July 07), Dali University (July 08) and Shenzhen University (July 10). Kathakli performance by Sangeet Natak Akademi as part of Saptakam at Yunan University of Nationalities Besides, the dance troupe also presented a lecture cum demonstration at Window of the World, Shenzhen on July 11. After Manipuri Dance by Sangeet Natak Akademi at Shenzhen University the performances, the delegation interacted with the audience and also answered their queries leaving a lasting impression on their psyche. As the performances brought together seven dance forms from India including Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, Odissi, Kathakali, Kathak, Sattriya, and Kuchipudi, the local audience got a chance to get the glimpse of these cultural repositories. 12 Shanghai: Consulate General of India, Shanghai organized an evening of Indian dance performance ‘Saptakam’ on July 13, 2014 by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. The 20-member troupe led by choreographer Ms Madhavi Mudgal mesemerized the audience by its performance. Through a subtle and dynamic interplay of forms which dissolve into one another, Saptakam presented before the viewer’s seven Indian classical dance forms in a single performance. Playing upon the relation between forms and the formless, the show group showcased the Bharatanatyam of southern India, a dance nurtured in temples and royal courts; the Manipuri dance of north-eastern India, grown out of ritual worship of Krishna; the Odissi dance of Audience enjoying performance by Sangeet Natak Akademy at Shanghai eastern India Performance by Sangeet Natak Akademi in Shanghai recapturing forms of medieval statuary; the Kathakali of southernmost India evoking primordial passion through its enactment of myth; the sparkling Kathak dance of northern India captivating with its footwork and pirouettes; the serene Sattriya dance of the Vaishnava monasteries of the North-east; and the Kuchipudi dance of South India blending folk tradition of drama with its classical grammar. Each of these dance forms came alive in Saptakam making space for the other as the choreography unfolded through its successive movements. 13 Bollywood Troupe Performance As part of the Glimpses of India Festival a Bollywood troupe “Indiana” performed in Urumqi, Shenyang, Yingkou from 31 August-8 September, 2014 and thereafter from 9-14 September in Hangzhou & Shanghai. Bollywood troupe “Indiana” was arranged by Indian Council of Cultural Relations. Urumqi: The group performed as part of the International Cultural Week under the 4th China-Eurasia Expo. The festival in Urumqi was inaugurated by Secretary Culture Mr. Ravindra Singh and Deputy Chief of Mission Dr. B. Bala Bhaskar on 2nd September, 2014 at the Xinjiang Art Theater. The group performed on old and contemporary Bollywood songs of actors like Raj Kapoor and Shahrukh Khan. The event was received with thumping applause by the packed auditorium which had a capacity of more than 800 people, who also danced to the tunes of Bollywood songs throughout the programme and some even sang along. A similar performance was made by the group next day at the same Secretary Culture Mr. Ravindra Singh and Deputy Chief of venue on 3rd September, 2014. Mission Dr. B. Bala Bhaskar with the artists after the performance at Urumqi 14 Shenyang: The event was inaugurated by Counsellor Mr. Alok Dimri and by Mr. Wang Qi the Vice-President of the University at the Shenyang Aerospace University on 5th September, 2014. In Shenyang the performance was well received by the packed stadium where more than 3,500 students of the University enjoyed the Bollywood Performance. Yingkou: a port city about 200 kms away from Shenyang the group performed at the Yingkou Art and Cultural Center which had a capacity of more than 1000 people on 7 September, 2014. Through the three Bollywood Performances more than 6,000 Chinese audiences was able to have a preview of India’s Bollywood. 15 Shanghai and Hangzhou: in association with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) organized a series of Bollywood song & dance performances at Nanhu District Cultural & Art Center, Jiaxing (September 9) ; Hangzhou Normal University, Hangzhou (September 10); and Oriental Art Center, Shanghai (September 11). The performances drew in huge crowds with more than 600 persons attending the shows in Jiaxing & Hangzhou each, while the performance in Shanghai saw more than 900 persons. The Shanghai show also saw audience coming on to the stage and dancing along with the dancers of the troupe. Bollywood Troupe performing at the Oriental Art Center, Shanghai The performance in Shanghai was preceded by an ‘India-China Friendship Medley’ sung by Mr Megh Kalyanasundaram. The medley was unique in terms of seamless rendition of popular Chinese songs on Friendship (Peng You) and Love (Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin) with Indian songs on Friendship and Love (Yeh Dosti & Lag Ja Gale) with similar mood and melody woven in to it. The Event was inaugurated by Secretary Culture Mr. Ravindra Singh and Ambassador Ashok K. Kantha Two Indian Chefs from hotel ‘The Ashok’ New Delhi were in Beijing for the festival to give the local people a taste of authentic Indian cuisine Secretary Culture Mr. Ravindra Singh at the inauguration of Food Festival in Beijing Chefs from Indian preparing dishes at the Food Festival Shanghai: Consulate General of India in Shanghai, in association with Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) organized ‘Indian Food Festival’ at Hotel Shanghai Marriott City Center from May 13-20, 2014. Consul General Mr. Naveen Srivastava inaugurated the event which was attended by a large number of people from diplomatic community, Indians and local Chinese on May 13, 2014. Consul General, Shanghai Mr. Naveen Srivastava inaugurating the Food Festival in Shanghai 19 The food festival showcased Hyderabadi cuisine from the province of Andhra Pradesh & Punjabi cuisine from the north Indian state of Punjab by specially renowned chefs Mr. Mukesh Kumar and Abdul Rasheed from India. The opening of the food festival featured a ‘Gandhi Medley’ comprising favorite songs of Mahatma Gandhi by Mr Megh Kalayanasundaram, a singercomposer and a long time Shanghai resident. Expert dancer Madhumita Bhuyan also enthralled the audience by performing the traditional ‘Bihu’ dance from Assam. India’s national carrier, Air India, sponsored a bumper lottery prize of a return ticket to India at the end of the festival. The food festival saw a large turnout from persons from all walks of life specially the local Chinese community in Shanghai. Food Festival showcasing Hyderabadi and Punjabi cuisine from India Chengdu: The Consulate General of India in Guangzhou organised Indian Food Festival in Shangrila Chengdu from May 23-30, 2014. The opening ceremony of the food festival was held on May 23 and was attended by a large number of people including Chefs preparing Indian Cuisine at the Food Festival in Chengdu 20 Consul General, Guangzhou Mr. Nagarajan Naidu inaugurating the Food Festival at Guangzhou representatives from local government, Consulates based in Chengdu, Indian Community and media organisations. The event was a grand success as large number of people are attending the festival every day and have appreciated the food items prepared by Mr. Sanjay Dasaria and Md. Ismail, Chefs deputed for the Food Festival by India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd., New Delhi. Hong Kong: Consulate General of India, Hong Kong in collaboration with Hotel Kowloon Shangri-La, from 1st June to 7th June, 2014 organised an Indian Food Festival ‘A Taste of Hyderabad’. Two Indian chefs, from ITDC namely, Mr.Sanjay B. Dasari and Mr. Mohammad Ismail, were specially flown in to cook authentic delicacies. The Launch of Festival on May 31, 2014 was attended by HKSAR officials, HK professionals and business personnel, members of Indian community and media. Launch showcased elements of Telugu culture, including Kuchipudi performances by Consul General Hong Kong Mr. Prashanth Chinese Aggarawal inaugurating the Food Festival at Hong Kong dancers. The inauguration was also an opportunity to promote the ‘Incredible India’ Tourism campaign with screening of India tourism films and display of Incredible India photo campaign exhibits. Books on Hyderabadi cuisine were used for media outreach and the social media campaign. An attraction was Indian wines served during the launch in collaboration with APEDA. Cultural performances and Tourism promotion campaign were done during the entire duration of the Festival. Thus the Festival enabled us to showcase diverse facets Chefs from Indian preparing Hyderabadi of Indian culture and promote India tourism, cuisine etc. on the peg of dishes at the Food Festival the food festival. 21 Huizhou: The Consulate General of India in Guangzhou organised Indian Food Festival in Sheraton Huizhou Beach Resort from July 4-12, 2014. As part of 'Glimpses of India' Festival being organised in China to celebrate 2014 as the Year of Friendly Exchanges between India and China. The opening ceremony of the food festival was held on 4 July 2014 and was attended by a large number of people including representatives from local government, Indian Community, Academicians, business Chefs from India preparing dishes at the Food Festival in Huizhou personalities and media organizations. The event has been a grand success as large number of people attended the festival every day and appreciated the food items prepared by Mr. Gaurav Malhotra and Naresh Kumar, Chefs deputed for the Food Festival by The Ashok, India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd., New Delhi. Guests enjoying Indian cuisine at the Food Festival at Huizhou Qingdao: An Indian Food Festival was organized in Hotel Shangri La Qingdao from 14-17 July. Two Indian Chefs from hotel ‘The Ashok’ New Delhi were in Qingdao for the festival to give the local people a taste of authentic Indian cuisine. The food Festival was inaugurated by Deputy Chief of Mission Dr. B Bala Bhaskar. 22 Deputy Chief of Mission Dr. Ba Bala Bhaskar meeting the Vice-Mayor of Qingdao Ms. Luan Xin 23 Yoga Festival Date Venue 7th -12th July, 2014 14th-18th July,2014 19th-22nd July 2014 Dali University, Dali Jing’an Public Park, Shanghai Yogi Yoga Center, Beijing Dali: The 2nd India-China Yoga Summit was held in the picturesque hill town of Dali in Yunnan Province from July 7-12, 2014. Around 1500 Yoga Practitioners participated in the event besides local government officials, media and academicians. The theme of the Summit was “Science of Yoga”. The ceremony was graced by renowned Yoga masters from India including Dr. Geeta S Iyengar from Iyengar Yoga School in Pune and Dr. H.R. Nagendra, Yoga Enthusiast participating in the Yoga Summit at Dali Chancellor of Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, Bangalore. The Summit was organised by the Consulate General of India in Guangzhou with the support of Ministry of Culture and Ambassador Ahsok K. Kantha inaugurating the Yoga Department of AYUSH, Government of India, along with Summit at Dali assistance from the Yunnan Provincial Government. 24 Shanghai: Yoga Festival was organised in Jing’an Public Park, Shanghai from July 14-18, 2014. It was attended by more than 500 people who participated in the yoga session conducted by the three yoga experts from Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY). The session drew an enthusiastic response Yoga Experts from India teaching Yoga to Chinese Yoga enthusiasts Beijing: The from local Shanghai Yoga Festival being held at the Jing'an Park at Shanghai community. The experts will be conducting sessions across Shanghai not only in Y plus Yoga Center but in media centers, companies and think tanks. Yoga Festival was organized from 19th-22nd July 2014. More than 500 Yoga Practitioners participated in the Yoga Festival. The event was organized by Embassy of India in partnership with Department of AYUSH. Kantha and Mr. Zhang Hongsen, Director General, Film Bureau, State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) with screening of the movie “Bhaag Milka Bhaag”. The Embassy of India in partnership with SAPPRFT of China organized the Film Festival from 21 to 27 August, 2014 as part of the Glimpses of India Festival to mark the India-China Year of Friendly Exchanges. Acclaimed Directors, Mr. Zhang Jianya and Mr. Fan Lixin, were designated as promotional Ambassadors to the Film Festival. To coincide with the Film Festival, the Embassy is also displayed an exhibition on “100 Years of Indian Cinema” at the venue of the Film Festival . Ambassador Mr. Ashok K. Kantha, Deputy Director General SAPPRFT Mr. Guozhi inaugurating the Film Festival in Beijing The Film Festival showcased a rich selection of eight popular Indian movies in Hindi and non-Hindi languages. The opening movie screened yesterday was Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. The other movies are - Jodha Akbar, Tare Zameen Par, Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Manjadikuru, Oh My God, and Queen. During the one week there were 10 screenings of 8 movies attended by close to 2000 people. Director (Films) Ms. Niprupmaka Kotru introducing the exhibition on "100 Years of Indian Cinema” to the guests 28 Guangzhou: An Indian Film Festival was held in Guangzhou from September 19-26, 2014. The Consulate organised the festival with the support from Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India to celebrate 2014 as a Year of Friendly Exchanges between India and China. Eight Indian Films including Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Queen, Jodhaa Akbar, Manjadikuru, Dil Chahta Hai, Taare Zameen Par, Oh My God and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag with Chinese subtitles were screened. The festival was held in Guangzhou in collaboration with Hua Ying Wan Sheng Cinema. The opening ceremony of festival was held on September 19, 2014. Counsellor Mr. M. Nagarajan Naidu inaugurating the Film Festival at Guangzhou A large number of local Chinese including academicians, enterprenures, students, government officials and media persons attended the opening ceremony. The Consulate presented bollywood CDs, Indian books and Indian wine to some of the guests through lucky draw contest. Consul General Mr. K. Hangzhou: Consulate General of India, Shanghai organized an Indian Film Festival at Vocational Academy of Art in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province from November 13-16, 2014 in cooperation with Zhejiang Foreign Affairs Office. Colors of Indian Exhibition at display in Shanghai The exhibition “Indian Buddhist Art” was also organized by CGI, Shanghai, Indian Museum, Kolkata (India) in collaboration with the Shanghai Museum and was inaugurated on 2nd December, 2014 at the Shanghai Museum by Ambassador of India H.E. Mr. Ashok K. Kantha, Mr. Chen Xiejun, Director of Shanghai Museum as well as senior leaders from Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress and Shanghai Municipal Government. It is the largest Exhibition of Indian Buddhist Art till date, which was been organised by an Indian Museum in China. The exhibition showcased the entire history of the life of Gautam Buddha through 91 excellent specimens (sculptures and manuscripts) of Indian Buddhist Art from the collections of the Indian Museum, Kolkata and other Museums of India. It included art media which depict Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and other entities; notable Buddhist figures, both historical and mythical; narrative scenes from the lives of all of these; as well as physical objects associated with Buddhist practice, such as vajras, bells, stupas and Buddhist temple architecture. Shanghai: India-China Investment and Trade Cooperation Seminar The Consulate General of India organized on 10th September 2014 an ‘India-China Investment and Trade Cooperation Seminar’in conjunction with a delegation from the Government of Gujarat. Gujarat delegation also presented information about Vibrant Gujarat Summit scheduled to be held in January 2015. More than hundred representatives of Chinese companies from a wide range of industries including textile, auto, engineering and electrical equipment sector attended the India-China Investment Trade & Coperation Seminar seminar. Presentations were made both by the Gujarat at Shanghai delegation and Consulate highlighting the advantages of investing in India. The seminar ended with a Q&A Session. Launch of 'Make in India' Campaign The Consulate General of India organized a business event this morning to mark the launch of “Make in India” campaign. The event was organized with the support of Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce and CII. There was a keen interest in the event and close to 140 representatives from more than 60 Chinese companies, Chambers of commerce and industry from Shanghai, and Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, local media and MNCs. There was a wide range of industries including engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, electrical goods, textiles, auto and auto-components, construction groups and investment companies. Guangzhou: The "Make-in-India" initiative of Prime Minister Modi has been launched in South and West China by the Consulate on September 25, 2014 through a seminar which was attended by 210 representatives of 152 leading Chinese enterprises. The Consualte organized this event with the support of the Guangdong and Guangzhou sub-councils. Consul General K. Nagaraj Naidu made a detailed presentation on the investment opportunities that are available in India. All participants were given information on the FDI policy in India, as well as sector-specific information in Chinese. The seminar was followed by a lively Q&A session. The invitees also listened to the speech made by Hon'ble Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Singh Modi.
