Our tour begins and ends in Rapid City, South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills with an orientation to meet the Running Strong staff and your tour companions. We will save the best for last – a very special evening with Running Strong’s National Spokesperson, Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills! Planned sites include: Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, South Dakota W Cheyenne River Youth Project® (CRYP) –CRYP runs two youth centers for teens and younger kids, along with planting a 2 acre organic garden, local Keya Café and more. W Summer Youth Feeding Program – In partnership with USDA, the Summer Youth Feeding Program feeds kids five days a week at four community centers on the Reservation. W Takini School – This K-12 School is the site of one of our backpack food programs which ensures that children don’t go hungry on the weekends. Takini, meaning “Survivor,” is located in the homelands of Chief Spotted Elk (Big Foot)’s band, which was attacked at Wounded Knee. Although the tour officially ends on Saturday, Running Strong provides hotel accommodations the night of Saturday, September 19th at no additional cost. Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota W Oglala Sioux Tribe Partnership for Housing – This local nonprofit housing organization promotes home ownership and improved homes and neighborhoods on Pine Ridge. W Slim Buttes Agricultural Development (SBAG) Base Farm – Meet community members and enjoy a traditional Lakota meal at the SBAG Base Farm, a program which helps families across Pine Ridge start their own vegetable gardens. W Tipi Waste Un Zanipi (Wellness through a Good Home) – Our Pine Ridge field office, Tipi Waste, distributes food, school supplies and other goods to meet the critical needs in the community. W Wounded Knee Memorial - Site of the 1890 7th Calvary massacre of Chief Spotted Elk (Big Foot)’s band, as well as the American Indian Movement (AIM) stand off in 1973. Surrounding Areas WM ato Paha (Bear Butte) –Part of the Black Hills, Bear Butte is sacred to many American Indian tribes and has been an important gathering site for centuries. WB adlands National Park – 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires, part of which share boundaries with the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. WC razy Horse Memorial – Still under construction in the Black Hills, this interpretive carving of the great Oglala leader is the world’s largest. WB lack Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary – Wild Mustangs run free in this beautiful sanctuary in the lower Black Hills. WF ort Robinson State Park – The site of the 1879 Northern Cheyenne outbreak as well as where Crazy Horse was killed in 1877. WM useum of the Fur Trade – Site of an original 1837 fur trading post, this museum explores the history of the fur trade in North America. WJ ourney Museum – This museum tells the area’s history from the Lakota to the pioneers to science. The Running Strong 26th Annual Reservations Tour is Sunday, September 13 – Saturday, September 19, 2015 * Please note that the Tour dates on the Running Strong 2015 calendar are incorrect. Deposits Running Strong allows interested tour participants to make a deposit of $200 per person to reserve their space on the tour. This nonrefundable deposit and completed application are due by July 15, 2015. Your spot on the tour will NOT be secure until we receive this deposit, and you receive a confirmation of receipt. W If your registration is accepted, you will be notified and the deposit will be put toward your total payment. W If you later choose not to participate in the tour, the deposit will be considered a tax-deductible contribution. W If the tour is already sold out or cancelled for any reason, you will be notified in writing and your deposit will be returned. How much does the tour cost? $1225/person for a double occupancy room, $1625/person for a single occupancy room. Running Strong reserves the right to refuse to accept or retain any person as a tour participant at any time. While Running Strong strives to meet the needs of tour participants, participating individuals, in turn, must be physically independent. special dietary needs may have some difficulty finding adequate food choices. Smoking is not allowed on the tour bus; however, we will make frequent stops for breaks and sight-seeing with opportunities to smoke outside. We make regular restroom stops and there is a bathroom on the bus in case of an emergency. All itineraries are tentative only. Modifications are occasionally necessary due to weather, schedule changes and other unforeseen factors. Running Strong is not responsible for changes in itinerary and refunds will not be made based upon unavoidable changes in itinerary or scheduling. However, every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary as stated in the tour information packet. are crisp and chilly in the Northern Plains states. However, the days can get hot with temperatures in the 80s or 90s. To ensure your comfort, pack casual clothes and dress in layers which can be taken off or put on as the temperature fluctuates along with comfortable walking shoes. Some days may be hot enough for shorts, but we advise you to bring a sweater, fleece or jacket as well for possible chilly days and evenings—last year we experienced freezing temperatures at night, so it can happen! Storms have a tendency to roll in and off the prairie quickly so please bring rain gear. A hat is also a good thing to pack, as you may spend some time in the sun. A Running Strong umbrella will be provided to all participants. Baggage is owner’s responsibility at all times. In the event that the tour is cancelled, Running Strong shall have no responsibility beyond refunding monies paid to it by its participants. Running Strong assumes no responsibility for injury, delay, damage, loss or accident to any of its participants. A statement and confirmation of your reservation, with a copy of this form for your records, will be sent to you upon receipt of your tour registration and payment. Walking: While there is not a lot of walking, comfortable shoes that you can wear all day are highly recommended. The following sites will include some walking: Wounded Knee Memorial, Slim Buttes base camp and farm, program sites, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and the museums. Also, our tour will include frequent stops and many “on and off” the bus situations as well as periods of standing. Unfortunately, most places on the reservation are not handicapped accessible, so wheelchair use is not possible. Staff frequently wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. Weather & Packing: In September, the mornings and evenings Roommates: Running Strong will match roommates when possible. Roommates will be placed together based on gender and room preferences. Unfortunately, at times not every roommate request can be fulfilled. If for some reason you are not matched, single travelers will need to pay the difference of a single versus a double room. If your notice of withdrawal is received in our office by July 15, 2015, you will receive a refund of your entire payment less the $200 non-refundable deposit. If your notice of withdrawal is received in our office after July 15, 2015, you will receive a refund of 50% of your entire payment less the $200 non-refundable deposit. If we must cancel the tour because of insufficient enrollment, we will do so no less than 21 days before the starting date of the tour..
