, Mon père il dit qu’il aime pas la musique de supermarché. , RENDEZVOUS It’s been almost a year since the great Nick Cave gave us a visit and turned us upside down... We pinch ourselves each time one of our legends, one we listened to solemnly and with exaltation, accepts our invitation ... We’ve been lucky to see our dreams come true for 24 years now… this year, Portishead is coming back. We last saw them in 1998 outside our fortified headquarters during a very special edition, one engraved in our memories. They will be back inside the Fort this summer. So, the rendezvous is made with this exceptional outfit, but also, like every year, with all those bands who were able to surprise us: the stunning, the classy, the uncompromising, the delicate, the noisy, the violent, the wackos, the punks, the geeks who will share our nights under the stars of St Malo... all those who make us want to continue our quest for the Holy Grail. Rendezvous with Brittany’s coastline atmosphere... because we have the chance to invite you to the Emerald Coast and to give you a chance to combine beach holidays and musical passions... Rendezvous with unique places... whether it be at the opening night of the festival in «La Nouvelle Vague», the beautiful St Malo venue, or during the musical naps in the idyllic Bon Secours beach, or during the friendly beach sports games at L’Eventail Beach and of course, in the setting of your exhilarating evenings, at the majestic Fort de Saint-Père with its Vauban-designed walls and its green countryside. © Nicolas Joubard 2013 Rendezvous with family! Likeminded people, fans of this marginal music, with these bands always surprised to find themselves at the center of the attention, with our volunteers team, our dear professionals and partners who are proud to join the adventure. This rendezvous is one of artistic beauty and economic anomaly, so let’s keep on growing paradoxes, unpretentiously but with pride, let us keep on dreaming together. Rendezvous is taken from August 13 to 16, don’t be late... 3 LINE-UP & SET TIMES LA ROUTE DU ROCK - 2014 SUMMER EDITION Thursday, August 14 Friday, August 15 Saturday, August 16 Fort de Saint-Père · Fort Stage (Doors : 18H00) DARKSIDE CARIBOU 22H50 THEE OH SEES 20H50 KURT VILE & THE VIOLATORS 19H25 THE WAR ON DRUGS 18H00 MAGNETIC FRIENDS MODERAT LIARS 22H40 PORTISHEAD 21H10 SLOWDIVE 19H20 ANNA CALVI 18H00 MAGNETIC FRIENDS 02H40 02H45 02H30 00H55 01H00 01H00 23H00 21H00 19H10 18H00 TODD TERJE JAMIE XX TEMPLES BAXTER DURY MAC DEMARCO MAGNETIC FRIENDS Le Fort de Saint-Père · Ramparts Stage THE FAT WHITE FAMILY REAL ESTATE 18H30 ANGEL OLSEN METZ PROTOMARTYR 18H30 CHEATAHS 00H05 00H05 00H05 21H55 20H25 22H05 18H40 CHEVEU TOY PERFECT PUSSY La Plage Bon-Secours · Beach Stage 16H00 15H00 JOHNNY HAWAII LA STATION RADAR (DJ SET) 16H00 14H30 AQUASERGE CHAMBRE 404 (DJ SET) Le Théâtre Chateaubriand 14H00 CONFÉRENCE DE CHRISTOPHE BRAULT La Plage de l’Eventail · Beach sports contests area 16H00 14H30 13H00 PEGASE FUTUR ALL STAR DJ’S SPORT IS NOT DEAD Wednesday, August 13 La Nouvelle Vague (doors: 20H30) FRÀNÇOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS HAMILTON LEITHAUSER 21H00 OUGHT 23H50 22H20 Set times are for your information only and can be subject to modifications. please refer to our website for updates: www.laroutedurock.com LA ROUTE DU FESTIVAL COMPILATION SAINT-MALO This compilation contains a selection of the artists present this summer, in order to discover La Route du Rock 2014’s line-up. After remixing Daft Punk’s last album in full (under the Daftside moniker), the New York duo released their debut album « Psychic » last October. This elusive album is impossible to classify: neither really rock, nor totally electro, their long compositions range from progressive rock, atmospheric soundscapes and experimental electro to create « slow motion dance music ». In a former life, Dan Snaith, the mastermind behind Caribou, was a math teacher. This surely explains the geometric accuracy of his crazy song structures, written like complex, but sensitive equations. Oscillating between mutant psychedelia, euphoric electronic music and marginal pop collages, the jubilant music of those Canadians is definitely unclassifiable. Born in 1997 in San Francisco, Thee Oh Sees have already reached cult status. It is primarily the project of the charismatic John Dwyer: workaholic composer, possessed singer and awe-inspiring guitarist. With fifteen albums and countless prodigious live performances, Thee Oh Sees set itself as the main reference to the current garage and psychedelic rock scene (Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin …). While the band had decided to take a break last winter, the Californians return in the spring with a new album « Drop » and for a few concerts in Europe this summer. www.darksideusa.com www.matadorrecords.com www.caribou.fm www.cityslang.com www.theeohsees.com www.castlefacerecords.com 6 20:50 > 21:50 KURT VILE & THE VIOLATORS Wakin On A Pretty Daze (Matador) 19:25 > 20:25 THE WAR ON DRUGS Lost In The Dream (Secretly Canadian) With « Wakin On a Pretty Daze » Kurt Vile signs his fifth album and adds another success to his beautiful discography. After his lo-fi beginnings, the Philadelphia musician is now a master in the art of writing epic and aerial folk songs, stretching his verses to a hypnotic and floating state. Between the classicism of 70′s American rock (Neil Young remains his model and essential reference) and the adventurous folk music, Kurt Vile has found a singular and unique songwriting for himself. With their 3d album « Lost in the Dream», The War On Drugs invite us to daydream: with 10 tracks from 4 to more than 8 minutes, the band lead by Adam Granduciel offers us a fascinating journey through their lush soundscape. Under the dual influence of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, the tense and misty rock of those Philadelphia natives fit in the Americana tradition: Rock songs both epic and melodic, able to evoke the great outdoors and the innermost pains alike. Grand melodies, aerial guitars, catchy keyboards, impeccable songwriting and a magnificent production: without a doubt, they just gave us classic record. www.kurtvile.com www.matadorrecords.com www.thewarondrugs.net www.secretlycanadian.com www.junip.net www.cityslang.com 7 Le Fort de Saint-Père / Fort Stage / Friday, August 15 LINE-UP / FRIDAY, AUGUST 15 FORT STAGE 22:40 > 00:00 PORTISHEAD Third (Island) 02:45 > 03:45 MODERAT Moderat II (Monkeytown Records) Portishead is one of the few bands that have managed to combine public success and sound exploration. By borrowing from hip-hop, soul and film scores, the band from Bristol invented a unique and timeless sound, often copied but yet unrivaled, which influenced many musicians. With three albums (and as many masterpieces) since 1994, Portishead patiently developed a singular world built around the incredible voice of Beth Gibbons, the distorted guitars sounds of Adrian Utley and the experiments of the demiurge, Geoff Barrow. While their debut album « Dummy » is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, the arrival of Portishead at Le Fort de Saint-Père promises to be a great event. Thrills guaranteed. Moderat is the meeting of producers Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary of Modeselektor with Sascha Ring of Apparat. The merger of those two monikers is also a merger of styles and talents, mixing bass music and the infernal rhythm of Modselektor with Apparat’s sensitive electronica. Even though the Berlin trio began working together in 2003, their first album was released in 2009 while their second was published last year. Associated with collective Pfadfinderei VJs for video projections and scenography, Moderat design their live shows as true audiovisual works. www.portishead.co.uk www.moderat.fm www.pfadfinderei.com 8 01:00 > 02:00 LIARS Mess (Mute Records) 21:10 > 22:10 SLOWDIVE Souvlaki (Creation Records) 19:20 > 20:20 ANNA CALVI One Breathe (Domino Records) While the previous album started to show a shift to electronic and synthetic sounds for Liars, the Americans dramatically confirmed this musical direction with their aptly named album « Mess ». Their 7th lp is a frightening disorder that mixes martial and wild electro, incisive beats and disturbing vocal incantations to result in the most danceable record for Liars yet. Always unpredictable, refusing all established conventions and always put to question; the band fronted by Angus Andrew explores new reaches at every album and always comes to reinvent itself. Almost 20 years after their separation, Slowdive announced their reunion by surprise and will be on stage this summer. Although deeply associated with the British noisy pop scene (MBV, Ride, Lush…), the Reading band has always cultivated its difference by favoring songwriting rather than noise. Even though they drowned their songs in reverb and distortion, the Englishmen were never far from a certain pop and melodic classicism. The aura of Slowdive has not stopped growing: from contemporary electronic music to atmospheric rock, many artists today claim to be influenced by them. Many artists dreams of having Nick Cave and Brian Eno in their fan club. This is what happened to Anna Calvi, English girl of Italian descent, after having released a handful of feverish songs and delivered a few twisted and intense live performances. Simply surrounded by a drummer and a multi-instrumentalist, the young Brit loves to play with extremes in her baroque and radiant compositions. Going from silence to great sound blasts, from murmurs to lyrical outbursts, the incandescent Londoner knows how to alternate between hot and cold without ever being lukewarm. www.liarsliarsliars.com www.mute.com www.slowdiveofficial.com www.creation-records.com www.annacalvi.com www.dominorecordco.com 9 Le Fort de Saint-Père / Fort Stage / Saturday, August 16 LINE-UP / SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 FORT STAGE 02:30 > 03:30 TODD TERJE It’s Album Time (Olsen Records) 01:00 > 02:15 JAMIE XX Sleep Sound / Girl EP (Young Turks) 23:00 > 00:00 TEMPLES Sun Structures (Heavenly Records) After multiplying the remixes and collaborations (with Franz Ferdinand, Lindstrøm…), the prodigy of the electronic scene Todd Terje just released his highly anticipated first album on April 8th. Influenced by the groove of 70s’ disco music and eighties synth-pop, the Norwegian producer achieved a masterstroke with its hedonistic and elegant compositions. With a version of the classic « Johnny And Mary » by Robert Palmer with the dandy Bryan Ferry featured on vocals, Todd Terje shows he isn’t afraid of exploring new territories and connects genres and eras: from exotica to funk, from disco to house music. In addition to his essential role within The XX with his synthesizers and drum machines, Jamie Smith aka Jamie XX has emerged in recent years as a revered dubstep producer and remixer and a highly acclaimed DJ on the new Future Garage scene in the UK. After publishing some exceptional tracks (including « Far Nearer » in 2011 and « Sleep Sound » just recently), the young Englishman is about to release his highly anticipated debut solo album in August. New British rock sensations Temples just released « Sun Structures », a timeless Psychedelic pop debut. Inspired by The Byrds, Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd & T-Rex (incidentally, the singer bears an uncanny resemblance to Marc Bolan), the four young Englishmen from Kettering have perfectly absorbed the codes of the past to create astounding kaleidoscopic tracks. Like Tame Impala or MGMT, the band renews psychedelic pop by injecting a new energy into it while avoiding the pitfalls of nostalgia. www.toddterje.com www.jamiexx.com www.theyoungturks.co.uk www.templestheband.comh www.heavenlyrecordings.com 10 21:00 > 22:00 la saison musique 2014/2015 au lieu unique : 19:10 > 20:10 des concerts • Wovenhand + Powerdove • Keren Ann • Arvo Pärt • La Folk Journée avec : Barbara Carlotti + My Name is Nobody feat Pillars & Tongues + Gareth Dickson BAXTER DURY It’s A Pleasure ([PIAS] Le Label) Sortie le 20 Octobre 2014 MAC DEMARCO Salad Days (Captured Tracks) Baxter Dury, a regular of La Route Du Rock’s Winter Edition (he was on stage there in 2006 and 2012), will be with us this summer to present a preview of his fourth album to be released next fall on Pias. With « Happy Soup » published in 2011, the British dandy finally received the success he deserved: Escaping the London fog and twilight feel of his debut record, he succeeded in creating a falsely naive pop music driven by elegant and classy melodies. Elusive, funny and touching character, Mac DeMarco has built a solid reputation for himself these recent years as a wacky slacker rocker (just look at his zany videos, produced with very few resources but with lots of fun, if you need some convincing). But beyond this happy-go-lucky attitude, the Montreal songwriter amazes us with his ability to write poignant lo-fi ballads with a $50 guitar. Successor to the acclaimed « 2″ released in 2012, Mac DeMarco just published « Salad Days » on the exciting label Captured Tracks, which once again confirms the young man’s talent. www.baxter-dury.com www.pias.com macdemarco.bandcamp.com www.capturedtracks.com • Locus Solus Orchestra avec : Loup Barrow + Thomas Bloch + Nadishana Vradiswlar + Manu Delago • Tim Fain • Kronos Quartet des festivals • SOY • Assis ! From St. Louis but based in Chicago, the young 27 year old American has published her second album «Burn Your Fire for No Witness» on the prestigious Jagjaguwar label, a moving collection of cracked, raw and unadorned songs. Worthy successor to Cat Power, the singer knows how to alternate intimate and fragile minutes with tense and edgy moments to deliver some broken and tormented folk music. It is not surprising to hear that «Atlas», Real Estate’s third album, was recorded in summer because everything here evokes the sun, the drowsiness of lazy afternoons, the sweet endless evenings... Built around delicate crystalline guitar chords, the songs of these New Jersey natives are sunny pop anthems that are occasionally crossed by melancholic moods but that always remain bright. Here is the perfect soundtrack for the upcoming summer. «Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stones?» asked the provocative Andrew Loog Oldham in the 60’s. In 2014, this question could also be applied to The Fat White Family. Ugly, dirty and mean, these six Englishmen from Brixton strive to be the least respectable band out of perfidious Albion. Stretching their influences from The Cramps to The Fall, this fat white family excels in an unhealthy and cocky rock’n’ roll. To those who wonder if rock music can still be dangerous and subversive today, The Fat White Family gives them a radical answer. www.angelolsen.com www.jagjaguwar.com www.realestatetheband.com www.dominorecordco.com www.facebook.com/FatWhiteFamily www.hatehatehaterecords.com 14 Le Fort de Saint-Père / Ramparts Stage / Friday August 15 LINE-UP / FRIDAY, AUGUST 15 RAMPARTS STAGE 18:30 > 19:15 CHEATAHS Cheatahs (Wichita) 20:25 > 21:05 PROTOMARTYR Under Color of Official Right (Hardly Art) 00:05 > 00:55 METZ Metz (Sub Pop) The indie rock and noisy pop scene of the early 90’s continues to influence many musicians today. From My Bloody Valentine to Teenage Fanclub through Nirvana or Dinosaur Jr., we can happily find all these references in Cheatahs’ debut album. This young cosmopolite quartet based in London brilliantly manages to renew the genre with abrasive fuzzy guitars while avoiding the trap of nostalgia. With The Stooges and MC5 as precursors, punk music owes obviously a lot to the city of Detroit. Last descendant of a long line of bands from «the motor city» is Protomartyr, a young quartet that translates the misery of Michigan City (officially into economic collapse) into noisy riffs and choruses full of spleen. Far from being sordid, the violent and incendiary tracks of those american firebrands evoke more rebellion than resignation. When listening to Metz, you might say that this Toronto outfit should have been called Mess... because no one gets out unwounded from these sonic blasts, these relentless and urgent punk songs that tap into the legacy of Shellac, Fugazi and Sonic Youth to revive this timeless anger and rage. Signed by Sub Pop, those Canadians take us back into the noisiest period of this legendary Seattle label. www.cheatahs.net www.wichita-recordings.com www.facebook.com/protomartyr www.hardlyart.com www.metzztem.com www.subpop.com 15 Le Fort de Saint-Père / Ramparts Stage / Saturday, August 16 LINE-UP / SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 RAMPARTS STAGE 18:40 > 19:05 PERFECT PUSSY Say Yes To Love (Captured Tracks) 22:05 > 22:55 TOY Join The Dots (Heavenly) 00:05 > 00:55 CHEVEU Bum (Born Bad Records) Hailing from Syracuse, NY, Perfect Pussy recently published their first album «Say Yes To Love» on the excellent Brooklyn label, Captured Tracks. Between Fugazi and Sonic Youth (first period), the quintet plays a raw and primal rock, played by instinct and with an amazing energy. In less than 25 minutes and in 8 tracks filled with noise and fury, the band fronted by Meredith Graves leaves listeners completely stunned, with their eardrums twisted by guitar feedback and their stomach knotted by this incredible sonic blast. Mixing psychedelia and krautrock together, the Englishmen from Toy found the perfect formula for combining misty layers of saturated guitars and motoric beats. These very prolific Londoners have just published «Join The Dots» their second album in less than three years of existence. These protégés of The Horrors (both bands have often played together) share with their elders a taste for elongated and hypnotic songs that reveal their toxic flavor on stage. With the constant concern of never repeating themselves, Cheveu went from a dirty and noisy garage-electro-rock to an unclassifiable genre, veering towards pop (a big surprise coming from these furious punks) in the lapse of three albums. Coined «shitgazing» (by the band themselves), the sound of the Parisian trio isn’t like any other: fucked up drum machines, broken down keyboards, sandpapered guitar riffs and some uncontrollable vocals are the main elements of this incredible mess of a sound, equally bizarre and innovative. www.capturedtracks.com www.toy-band.com www.heavenlyrecordings.com www.bornbadrecords.net 16 La Nouvelle Vague / Rue des Acadiens 35400 Saint-Malo / Wednesday, August 13 LINE-UP / WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13 LA NOUVELLE VAGUE 21:00 > 21:50 OUGHT More Than Any Other Day (Constellation) 22:20 > 23:20 HAMILTON LEITHAUSER Black Hours (Ribbon Music) 23:50 > 00:50 FRÀNÇOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS Piano Ombre (Domino) After a few tracks published in 2012, Ought’s first album, «More Than Any Other Day», is being released today on the prestigious Constellation label, home of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Hailing from the Montreal DIY scene, the young quartet plays radicaland tense post-punk and cites Gang of Four and Talking Heads as its main influences. Those references are obvious when listening to these harsh and feverish songs that confront sliced guitars riffs with the vocals of the charismatic Tim Beeler. The show given by The Walkmen in 2012 was one of the memorable moments in the history of the festival. Two years later, as the band just announced their indefinite hiatus, their singer Hamilton Leithauser will present «Black Hours», his solo debut which will see its release on June 2. Produced with the assistance of prestigious guests (musicians from The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend ...), the album is filled with melancholy and feverish nocturnal atmospheres. The New Yorker has lost none of his incredible charisma nor his flamboyant lyricism in his solo endeavor. «Let us be the most beautiful people» sang Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains on their previous record back in 2012. This is still the case today with «Piano Ombre» their magnificent new album on the prestigious Domino label. The French band from Bordeaux, composed of François Marry and four multi-instrumentalists, succeeded once again to mix British pop, French chanson and African rhythms to create a dreamlike and poetic world that plays with shadows and light. www.oughtontheinternet.tumblr.com www.cstrecords.com www.hamiltonleithauser.com www.ribbonmusic.com www.francoisandtheatlasmountains.com www.dominorecordco.com 17 La Plage Bon-Secours / Intra-muros Saint-Malo LINE-UP BEACH STAGE (free access) This summer, the festival will feature three French independent labels on the beach (Bon-Secours beach, at the foot of St-Malo’s ramparts). On Thursday, «La Station Radar» will open with Johnny Hawaii. On Friday, Room 404 will open for Aquaserge. We will finish on Saturday with the Label «Future» and their major act, Pegase. Listening to his first album «Southern Lights,» we can hear the Marseille native inventing a new genre, ambient-surf music: dreamy and elusive tracks, made of long sparkling stretches of airy sounds. Reverb-drenched guitars and hypnotic loops evoke the incessant crashing of the waves and the drowsiness of an endless summer. Totally unclassifiable outfit Aquaserge has been reinventing pop music for the past ten years by tapping into 70s post-rock, jazz and psychedelic music. With a new album «À l’amitié» to be published next week, the Toulouse natives (which we already saw on stage as members of Tame Impala or Melody’s Echo Chamber) expand their sparkling universe and can now be seen as the offspring of great adventurers like Serge Gainsgourg, Robert Wyatt or Frank Zappa. Nantes activist and co-founder of the Futur label, Raphaël d’Hervé released the first album from his solo project Pegase earlier this year. Unreal and fantastic, Pegase invites the listener to dream and be melancholic: between airy dream pop, delicate electronica, silky ambient and retro futuristic new-wave. On the beach of Saint-Malo, this winged horse will probably be the best way to fly away. www.johnnyhawaii.bandcamp.com www.lastationradar.com www.aquaserge.com www.chambre404.com www.pegasemusic.com www.fvtvruniverse.tumblr.com 18 A U S T I N P S Y C H F E S T P R E S E N T S L E V I TA TI ON FRAN CE SEPT 19 & 20 2014 / LE CHABADA / ANGERS, FR SPORT IS NOT DEAD FOOT, RUGBY & DODGEBALL Saturday, August 16 / 13H00 to 17H00 / Free access La plage de l’Eventail (in front of the casino) CONFERENCE BY CHRISTOPHE BRAULT HISTORY OF PSYCH ROCK Friday, August 15 / 14H00 / Free access Le Théâtre Chateaubriand / 6 rue Groult Saint-Georges / Saint-Malo Saint-Malo is not Rio but people from Brittany are in for it when the Eventail beach turns into Copacabana to host «Sport is not Dead». Psychedelic music kept on irrigating all generations of rock bands from the 80s until today.
