1. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
1.1 GENERAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Valvcon V-Series Electric Actuators provide reliable and efficient operation of final control elements, such as 1/4
turn valves, with torque requirements up to 3000 inch pounds. V-Series actuators are available as AC models
with a 75% duty cycle and DC models with a continuous* duty cycle. In addition, a variety of options and
accessories are available and use the unique Valvcon modular design where all "daughter" boards and actuator
accessories plug into the "mother" board.
*Continuous for 1hour, after which the duty cycle is reduced to 80%.
It is important to verify that the output torque of the actuator is appropriate for the torque requirements of the valve
and that the actuator duty cycle is appropriate for the intended application.
1.1.1 DUTY CYCLE
Valvcon's 12VDC and 24VDC actuators use a DC motor that is rated for continuous* duty cycle for up to one
hour. The actuator is not designed to run continuously, around the clock due to brush wear in the motor. If you
choose to use the actuator in a very high duty cycle environment, Valvcon can replace motors with worn brushes
at the factory for a nominal fee. Symptoms of worn brushes include black dust inside the actuator enclosure and
"squealing" noise.
*Continuous for 1hour, after which the duty cycle is reduced to 80%.
Consult the actuator's base label to confirm proper duty cycle for your specific application. Remember, the duty
cycle rating applies to applications with an ambient temperature of approximately 104 degrees F. Actuators
installed in locations with higher ambient temperatures will have a "de-rated" duty cycle.
1.1.2 POWER REQUIREMENTS
Consult the actuator's base label for duty cycle and current draw information. The customer must
fuse the input power; fuse rating 5A maximum.
1.1.3 TEMPERATURE LIMITS
Low ambient temperatures: The minimum recommended ambient temperature is 32°F. With the optional heater
and thermostat installed, the recommended minimum ambient temperature can be lowered to -40°F. The
thermostat will control the heater to come on at or below 40 degrees F and turn off at or above 60 degrees F.
High ambient temperatures: The maximum recommended ambient temperature is 150°F. In outdoor
applications where ambient temperatures exceed 80°F, actuators should be shielded from direct sunlight.
For media temperatures above 200°F, a shielding plate should be placed between the actuator and the mounting
bracket. Additionally, the actuator should be mounted at the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position relative to the pipe.
For media temperatures above 300°F, a valve with an extended shaft mounting arrangement should be used.
1.1.4 ACTUATOR MOUNTING
The actuator may be mounted in any position.
Valvcon V-Series actuators are furnished with a female drive output. Two ISO. bolt patterns (ISO 5211) are
provided for actuator mounting. Using the wrong bolt size may strip out the threads.
It is mandatory that the actuator be firmly secured to a sturdy mounting bracket. A minimum of four bolts
with lock washers should be used to secure the actuator to the bracket. Flexibility in the bracket is not allowed,
and backlash, or "play", in the coupling should be minimized. The actuator output shaft must be in line (centered)
with the valve shaft to avoid side-loading the shaft.

1.1.5 WIRING
Valvcon manufactures actuators that can run on one of the following voltages: 24VAC, 115VAC, 230VAC, 12VDC
and 24VDC. Ensure you apply the correct voltage to the actuator, since applying the wrong voltage could
destroy the boards. Input power is wired directly to the actuator's motor through the motherboard and two limit
switches.
A wiring label is affixed to each actuator directly above the terminal strip, specific to the configuration of options
included.
The customer must fuse the input power; fuse rating 5A maximum.
Wiring for 12VDC and 24VDC Actuators with No Board Options Installed
1.1.6 NEMA RATINGS
Valvcon manufactures two styles of enclosures: the "W" enclosure is weathertight and designed to NEMA 4/4X
standards, while the "WX" enclosure is "explosionproof" and designed to NEMA 4/4X/7/9 (Class 1, Division 1,
Groups C and D, and Class 2, Division 1, Groups E, F and G, and Class 3) standards. As an option, Valvcon can
supply units certified by the CSA. The CSA certification must specified at the time of ordering; certified units will
have the CSA logo affixed to the base nameplate.
Ensure that the actuator's ratings are appropriate for the environment prior to installation. When removing the
cover, use extreme care not to scratch or nick the base and cover flanges. Scratches or nicks on the flanges may
cause the unit to not meet specifications. This is especially important for CSA certified units.

1.2 ADJUSTMENT OF LIMIT SWITCHES
Two limit switches operating off the cams on the output shaft determine the exact positions where the actuator will
stop at the end of each cycle. The first limit switch (lower) determines the clockwise position. The second limit
switch (upper) determines the counter-clockwise position. The limit switches can be adjusted from 5 to 320
degrees of actuator rotation. If an adjustment of any of the positions is required, proceed as follows:
A.
Remove Actuator Cover
Remove the actuator cover by removing the screws securing the cover to the base.
B.
Adjust the OPEN limit switch cam
1. Using a 1/16 hex wrench, loosen the set screw in the OPEN limit switch cam (the second up from the
bottom).
Apply power to terminals 1 and 3 or use the manual override to drive the actuator to the open position
(counterclockwise rotation). NOTE: If any options boards are installed, DO NOT power terminals 1 and 3.
3. Remove the power from the actuator.
4. Rotate the cam toward the limit switch arm just until the switch clicks closed.
5. Re-tighten the set screw on the limit switch cam (Be careful not to over-tighten the screw).
2.
C.
Adjust the CLOSED limit switch cam
1. Using a 1/16-inch hex wrench, loosen the set screw in the CLOSED limit switch cam (the bottom one).
2. Apply power to terminals 1 and 4 or use the manual override to drive the actuator to the closed position
(clockwise rotation). NOTE: If any options boards are installed, DO NOT power terminals 1and 4.
3. Remove the power from the actuator.
4. Rotate the cam toward the limit switch arm just until the switch clicks closed.
5. Re-tighten the set screw on the limit switch cam (Be careful not to over-tighten the screw).
For DC actuators, the two standard limit switches cannot be used to indicate the open and closed status of the
actuator. If you require status feedback, you must have the optional limit switches installed.
If dry contacts are needed, up to three additional limit switches may be installed in the actuator (see "Additional
Limit Switches").
1.3 MANUAL OVERRIDE
To use the manual override, push the override shaft down approximately a 1/4-inch to disengage the motor from
the gear train. While holding the shaft down, turn the shaft with a wrench to reach the desired position. NOTE:
The rotation of the output may not be the same as the rotation of the override shaft! Note which way the output
rotates whenever you use the override shaft. Also, be careful not to drive the actuator past the limit switch
settings; it is possible to damage installed options such as a feedback potentiometer.
The manual override shaft must be returned to its fully upward position before the motor is re-engaged. If it does
not "spring" back up into the correct position, rotate it slightly to align the spur gears and it should spring back up.

1.4 TROUBLESHOOTING
If the actuator fails to operate:
Visually inspect for damage, burn marks, or loose connections.
Check that the proper voltages are present at the actuator's terminal connections.
Check all the plug-in connections to be sure they are properly installed - Motor to connector S3
Bottom limit switch to S2
Second limit switch to S1
Jumper wire to J & K
If the motor is hot, the actuator may have gone into thermal overload protection. Let the motor cool and try again.
Ensure the limit switches are properly set.
Ensure the actuator's duty cycle is correct for the application.
Ensure the actuator's output torque is within the required range.
If the actuator's motor hums or turns slowly, check the actuator's motor capacitor to see if it is broken, cracked or
burned.
Make sure power is applied only to one terminal (either 3 or 4 but not both).
Check for a proper connection at motor socket S3.
Ensure you do not have more than one actuator wired in parallel.
If the motor turns but the output does not, ensure the manual override has returned to its fully upward position.
For additional information on troubleshooting, see Valvcon's Web site at www.valvcon.com.
1.5 WARRANTY POLICY
Valvcon products are manufactured with a two-year standard warranty. The warranty period begins with the date
of shipment from Valvcon, unless the end-user can show proof of an actual “start-up” date, in which case the
warranty period begins on that “start-up” date.
Your Valvcon Stocking Representative provides the first level of troubleshooting. The warranty is a "return to
factory" warranty, and it covers defects in materials and workmanship. If your Stocking Representative cannot
diagnose and/or resolve the problem, they will return the unit to the factory for repair.
In the event of any questions or concerns, please contact your local Valvcon Stocking Representative. To
access common trouble shooting tips, or to identify your Stocking Rep, visit our Web site at www.valvcon.com.

2. OPERATING PROCEDURES
2.1 OPEN/CLOSE UNITS (NO BOARD OPTIONS INSTALLED)
These actuators must be powered in each direction. That is, to drive in the clockwise direction, power must be
applied to terminals 1 and 4; to drive in the counter-clockwise direction, power must be applied to terminals 1 and
3 (reversing polarity). The actuator will continue to rotate in the appropriate direction until power is removed or a
cam trips an end-of-travel limit switch. Once the actuator reaches an end-of-travel switch, power may be
removed or may remain applied without damaging the actuator.
Wiring for Open/Close units with no board options installed, and for each of the options listed below, is provided
on the following pages.

Internal Connections - LV Series Motherboard (1000 – 3000 lb-in, large enclosure)
2.1.1 HEATER AND THERMOSTAT OPTION (ORDER CODE "T")
The heater and thermostat option is used to maintain the appropriate internal ambient temperature, and also to
assist in eliminating internal condensation in environments that experience wide temperature swings. It should be
used in environments in which the temperature may potentially drop below 40 degrees F, and/or in environments
which experience wide temperature swings.
The heater strip is energized whenever the ambient temperature drops below 40 degrees F. and remains
energized until the ambient temperature exceeds 60 degrees F. Valvcon uses a 15-Watt heater for 115VAC,
24VAC, 12 VDC and 24VDC units, and a 40-Watt heater for 230VAC units.
To power the heater and thermostat, power must be constantly applied to terminals 1 and 2.
For high humidity or "tropical" environments, Valvcon offers the "tropical heater and thermostat" package.
Consult your local Valvcon stocking representative for details.

2.1.2 FEEDBACK POTENTIOMETER OPTION (ORDER CODE "P")
The Feedback Potentiometer provides a variable resistance (0-1000 ohms) to indicate the position of the
actuator's output shaft. The signal can be fed at positions 13, 14 and 15 on the terminal strip.
WIRING
Potentiometer Wiring
CALIBRATION
The potentiometer has been calibrated at the factory. However, if re-calibration is required, proceed as follows:
1) Apply power (or use the manual override) to drive the actuator to its full clockwise position (as viewed from the
top of the actuator).
2) Unplug the potentiometer lead from the back of the motherboard (connection "S6").
3) Connect an ohmmeter to the BLACK and GREEN pot leads.
4) Loosen the cam shaft gear and slowly rotate it until the ohmmeter reads 50 ohms (+/- 5 ohms).
5) While maintaining this reading, tighten the cam shaft gear set screw.
7) Apply power (or use the manual override) to drive the actuator to its full counter-clockwise position (as viewed
from the top of the actuator).
8) Connect the ohmmeter to the BLACK and RED pot leads. The reading should be between 35 and 60 ohms. If
the reading is not between 35 and 60 ohms, repeat the above steps for calibrating the potentiometer.
9) Connect the feedback potentiometer plug to the motherboard connection "S6." Be sure that the locking tab
and ramp face each other. Finally, use the wire ties provided to secure the pot wires away from any rotating
components in the actuator.
NOTE: If three additional limit switches are installed, the Potentiometer and/or Position Re-Transmit options will
not have a terminal connection on the motherboard. In this case, the user must wire directly to the three position
header at the end of the option leads.

2.1.3 POSITION RE-TRANSMIT OPTION (ORDER CODE "G")
The Position Re-transmit option uses user-supplied voltage to generate a 4-20mA signal to indicate the position of
the actuator's output shaft. In the full clockwise position, the re-transmitter provides the minimum (4mA) signal;
in the full counterclockwise position, the potentiometer provides the maximum (20mA) signal.
WIRING
Re-transmit Wiring
CALIBRATION
The re-transmit option has been calibrated at the factory. However, if re-calibration is required:
1) Ensure the feedback loop applies a resistance of between 250 and 600 ohms.
2) Apply power (or use the manual override) to drive the actuator to its full clockwise position (as viewed from the
top of the actuator).
3) Adjust the "zero" pot on the re-transmit board until a reading of 4mA is achieved.
4) Apply power (or use the manual override) to drive the actuator to its full counter-clockwise position (as viewed
from the top of the actuator).
5) Adjust the "span" pot on the re-transmit board until a reading of 20mA is achieved.
The re-transmit option includes a potentiometer that has been calibrated at the factory. However, if re-calibration
of the potentiometer is required, follow the instructions in paragraph 2.1.2.
NOTE: If three additional limit switches are installed, the Potentiometer and/or Position Re-Transmit options will
not have a terminal connection on the motherboard. In this case, the user must wire directly to the three position
header at the end of the option leads.
2.1.4 BRAKE OPTION (ORDER CODE "K")
Because of Valvcon's efficient spur gear design, the brake option is required for all actuators installed on
dampers, butterfly valves and other resilient seated valves. The brake will prevent back-driving (back-driving
causes actuator "hunting" and motor burn-out).
The brake is wired directly into the motor drive circuit and requires no additional wiring.

2.1.5 ADDITIONAL LIMIT SWITCHES OPTIONS (ORDER CODES "S1", "S2", AND "S3")
Additional limit switches provide dry contacts which may be used for position indication, or to activate other
devices, such as pumps, when the actuator achieves certain positions. They may be set at any point within the
actuator's range of travel. One ("S1"), two ("S2") or three ("S3") additional limit switches may be installed in any V
Series actuator. The switches are rated for 5 amps at 230VAC.
For "S1", the additional limit switch will be factory set at the full clockwise position.
For "S2", the first additional limit switch will be factory set at the full clockwise position, and the second will be set
at full counter-clockwise.
For "S3", the first additional limit switch will be factory set at the full clockwise position, the second will be set at
full counter-clockwise, and the third will be set at full clockwise.
NOTE: If three additional limit switches are installed, the Potentiometer and/or Position Re-Transmit options will
not have a terminal connection on the motherboard. In this case, the user must wire directly to the three position
header at the end of the option leads.
2.1.6 DUAL CONDUIT OPENING OPTION (ORDER CODE "O")
PLEASE NOTE: This option is now standard, there is no need to add order code "O" to the description when
ordering.
2.1.7 POSITION INDICATOR OPTION (ORDER CODE "F")
The position indicator provides a visual indication (a dial indicator on the top of the housing) of the position of the
actuators output drive. It is factory installed only. PLEASE NOTE: This option is now standard, there is no need
to add order code "F" to the description when ordering.
2.1.8 HANDWHEEL OPTION (ORDER CODE "Z")
All Valvcon V Series actuators are equipped with a wrench-operated override shaft. As an option, the handwheel
eliminates the need for a wrench -- it can be operated by hand. It is de-clutchable; so it does not rotate during
normal operation (the standard override shaft does rotate during normal operation and is thus unsuitable for a
handwheel).

2.2 BOARD OPTIONS
Valvcon's various board options simply plug in to the motherboard to provide various methods of control. The
following paragraphs show how to calibrate and operate each board option. A V-series actuator can
accommodate only one option board.
2.2.1 POSITIONER BOARD OPTION (ORDER CODE "C")
The Valvcon positioner board allows analog control of the valve or damper. That is, the actuator will accept an
analog signal such as 4-20mA and position accordingly: 4mA will be the full clockwise position, 20mA will be full
counter-clockwise. Any intermediate signal will be linear with position (i.e., 12mA will be 50% of rotation).
Valvcon manufactures different boards for the different input voltages and control signals. Check the actuator's
base label to verify you that have the correct board for your application. The positioner board for DC input
voltages, can accept either a 4-20mA or 2-10VDC control signal. A jumper on the board selects the control
signal.
The positioner board also provides a 4-20mA or 2-10VDC feedback signal to indicate output shaft position.
To ensure proper operation of the positioner board, the end-of-travel limit switches should not trip during routine
operation. If you require a feedback signal of valve position, you must have the optional additional limit
switch(es).

Potentiometer Controls Defined
1.
ZERO - Clockwise adjustment (Minimum Input Signal).
2.
SPAN - Counterclockwise adjustment (Maximum Input Signal).
3.
NULL - Null adjustment (turn Clockwise to increase the size of the Null window, making the
actuator less sensitive to noise on the control signal).
LED Indicators Defined
1.
CW - This LED illuminates each time the actuator is powered in the clockwise direction.
2.
CCW - This LED illuminates each time the actuator is powered in the counterclockwise direction.
3.
POT - This LED illuminates when the feedback potentiometer is properly calibrated.
4.
CON - This LED illuminates when the input control signal is present.
Input Calibration Procedure (Input signal)
1.
Apply the minimum control signal. Adjust the ZERO Pot until the actuator reaches the fully closed
position. If the CW LED is on, back off the ZERO adjustment until the LED turns off.
2.
Apply the maximum control signal. Adjust the SPAN Pot until the actuator reaches the fully open
position. If the CCW LED is on, back off the SPAN adjustment until the LED turns off.
3.
The Null Pot is factory set and should not need to be changed. If excessive hunting occurs, turn
the Null pot Clockwise in small increments until the hunting stops. Optimum control will occur at the
highest setting possible at which no hunting occurs.
The Feedback Potentiometer is calibrated at the factory and should not need calibration, however
if calibration is required, proceed as follows:
Calibrate the Potentiometer
1. Apply power or use the manual override to drive the actuator to its true closed position (clockwise
rotation).
2. Remove one of the motor leads. (with power applied)
3. Rotate the cam shaft gear slowly until the "POT" LED illuminates
5. Tighten the cam shaft set screw.
6. Replace the motor lead.
Fail Last Position
Normally, if the positioner senses a complete loss of control signal, it will cause the actuator to go to the
minimum signal position. However, the positioner can be enabled "Fail Last Position". If this feature is
used, the actuator will simply stay in its present position when there is a loss of control signal. The
control signal must fall below 2.0 mA, or 1.0 volts
The positioner board fail last position is enabled by moving the position of a jumper (S3) near the top of
the board. (see Positioner Board Identification above)
Reverse Acting
The positioner may be set up to operate in a reverse acting mode; that is, to drive CCW on a decreasing
control signal and drive CW on an increasing control signal.
The procedure to achieve this mode of operation is as follows:
1. Unplug the feedback potentiometer plug from the positioner board. Reverse the position of the red
and green wires (This requires using a small screwdriver to depress the small tabs that lock the wires
into the plug). Reconnect the plug to the positioner board.
2. Unplug the wiring at the motor and change the black and red lead positions.
3. Reverse the S1 and S2 connectors on the motherboard.
4. Calibrate the positioner using the ZERO adjustment to set the fully CCW position (4 mA or 2VDC),
and the SPAN adjustment to set the fully CW position (20 mA or 10VDC). Always adjust the ZERO
adjustment first.

Troubleshooting
If the actuator fails to operate:
1.
2.
3.
Verify that the control signal is properly connected. If the control signal polarity is correct, check the
DC power at terminals T-1 and T-2.
If the control signal and DC power are correct, vary the control signal and observe the CW, and
CCW LED's. If they light as they should (see LED Indicators Defined), check the motor and limit
switch connections (see section 2.1.2).
Check that the Feedback Potentiometer is properly calibrated. If the problem persists, please
contact your local stocking representative for assistance.
2.2.2 RELAY BOARD OPTION (ORDER CODE "R")
The relay board option allows "two wire" or low power control of the actuator for two-position operation. While DC
power is supplied constantly to power the motor, a two-wire signal controls the position of the actuator. The most
common uses for the relay board option are:
1) To provide isolation for actuators wired in parallel.
2) For applications where the control signal is different from the actuator power.
3) For control from low power relays
When the control signal is DE-ENERGIZED, the actuator rotates clockwise. When the control signal is
ENERGIZED, the actuator rotates counter-clockwise.
Valvcon offers relay boards for the following control signal voltages: 115, 230, and 24 VAC, and 12 and 24 DC.
The motor voltage and control signal can be, but do necessarily need to be, of the same voltage. For example, a
12 VDC actuator may be controlled by a 24 VDC control signal. Be sure you have the appropriate board option
for your application.
The customer must fuse the input power; fuse rating 5A maximum.

2.2.3 DUAL RELAY BOARD OPTIONS (ORDER CODE "R2")
The dual relay board option allows "three wire" or low power control of the actuator. The most common uses for
the relay board option are:
1) To provide isolation for actuators wired in parallel.
2) For applications where the control signal is different from the actuator power.
3) For control from low power relays
While DC power is supplied constantly to power the motor, two control signals power relays to drive the actuator.
One control signal drives the actuator clockwise, and another drives it counterclockwise. When neither control
signal is energized, the actuator will stop in position. The actuator may stop in any position.
Valvcon offers dual relay boards for the following control signal voltages: 115, 230, and 24 VAC, and 12 and 24
DC. The motor voltage and control signal can be, but do necessarily need to be, of the same voltage. For
example, a 24 VDC actuator may be controlled by a 12 VDC control signal. Be sure you have the appropriate
board option for your application.
The customer must fuse the input power; fuse rating 5A maximum.
