YOUR ARRIVAL

Once you've collected your luggage you’ll find your Thomson team waiting for you. Please let us
know if you’re having any baggage problems, or if you need any special assistance so we can help.
We will tell you where to find your coach or taxi for your transfer to Lake Como. There may be
customers arriving from other flights on your transfer, so we'll do our best to keep you informed
of any waiting time before your vehicle leaves for the resort.
Tra nsfer to your resort
When your transfer is ready to leave for Lake Como, we'll let you know an estimated journey
time and explain the route, including any stops or drop-offs along the way.
Generally, the transfer from Malpensa airport to Lake Como takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, and
from Verona airport 3 hours 30 minutes. Sometimes you may wait a short time for an additional
flight to land, but of course we will keep you informed of the estimated waiting time and, where
possible we will be on hand while you wait. Please do be aware that there may not always be a
Holiday Advisor on your coach.
Just so you know, sometimes our transfer vehicles can’t make it right to the door of your
accommodation, so there might be a short walk, possibly carrying your luggage, to get to the
entrance of your accommodation. In Bellagio a ferry transfer may be required, this is included in
your transfer at no extra cost.
If you've booked car hire prior to your departure, please contact a Thomson Holiday Advisor at
the airport - they'll be able to direct you to the car hire office.
If you’re travelling to your resort by car or train, you’ll find some information waiting for you at
your accommodation reception, so you can arrange to meet your Holiday Advisor.
Check in a nd settle in
When you arrive at your accommodation, it’s usual for reception to request your passport.You will
need to hand these over to the reception staff. They will be returned to you after a short while, if
they are not then ask reception and they will hand them back.
In Italy a tourist tax is chargeable per person-per night. It is set by the local council and based on
the official star rating of the hotel. This is generally around €1 - €2 per person-per night and will
be charged at the end of your stay. Many hotels only accept this payment in cash, so make sure
you check with your reception on check-in.
If you have any dietary requirements this is an ideal time to inform reception. Alternatively, you
can contact us on [email protected] and we’ll let your accommodation know before
you arrive on holiday.

Safety standards with regards to balconies differ in Italy. You may be staying in a room with a
balcony that is lower than we would expect in the UK. Please take care when on the balcony and
do not lean on or over the railings. Children aged 12 and under must be supervised and not left
unattended on the balcony at any time.
Welcome Meeting/Wa lka bout
The day after your arrival your Holiday Advisor will hold either a Welcome Meeting or a Welcome
Walkabout. This is the perfect oppourtunity for us to show and tell you lots of information to
make sure you get the most out of your holiday.
You will receive details of the time and the location of your Meeting or Walkabout when you are
on the transfer from the airport toward Lake Como.
We reccomend you attend your Welcome as it gives you the chance to meet your Holiday Advisor
and to ask them lots of questions. Also, if you have pre-booked any activities or excursions from
the UK for your holiday, you will be able to collect your tickets when you attend.

We will be holding regular Info Points throughout your stay.
This gives you the chance to drop by, come and see us and ask us lots of questions, If there is
anything we can do to improve your holiday this is a great time to tell us so we can amend

Dublin (Air Lingus) flights from Milan Malpensa check-in from area 2, just in front of door 13
Birmingham and Manchester (FlyBe) flights normally check-in from area 17, near to door 18
All Easyjet flights check-in at Terminal 2, and you will find one queue for all check-in desks
If you have booked Speedy Boarding with Easyjet, then you will be able to use the desks to the
right of the main bank of desks. Please see your Holiday Advisor if you require more info
Terminal 1 in Malpensa is very large and can involve a long walk to the check-in desks and
through security
Luggage trolleys can be found in various places in Malpensa airport, and there is no charge for
these

This info is to help you get your bearings. You’ll also find many of these places along with your
accommodation marked on the resort map.
Bella gio
Banks and cash points
There is a Deutsche Bank located on Lungo Lario Manzoni on the main road shared with
Metropole and Spendide Hotels which is open Monday to Friday from 8.20am -1.20pm and
2.45pm - 3.45pm.
There is a cash machine next door to the Hotel Excelsior Splendide on the lakefront as well as
opposite the Hotel Metropole. You will also find plenty of other cash machines around the town.
Bus service
There are two main bus lines that go through Bellagio, to Como and to Lecco. There is only one
bus stop in the main part of Bellagio itself, at the end of the Lungolario just after the Salita
Genazzini.
You can buy your bus tickets to Lecco at the newsagent opposite the passenger ferry terminal and
tickets cost €2.80 each way For services to Como you will need to buy them from the Cafe San
Remo, next-door to the Excelsior-Splendide hotel. These tickets cost €3.80 each way. It is possible
to buy tickets on the bus itself but it is more expensive.
Speak to a Holiday Advisor for information on train and bus timetables in the local area.
Church
The main church in Bellagio is dedicated to San Giacomo, and is open all day if you want to have a
look around, but please remember to cover your shoulders and knees before entering. They hold
two services on a Sunday, at 11.30am and at 6pm. All the services are Catholic and in Italian only,
for an Anglican service in English, please see Cadenabbia.
Internet
You can find Bellagiopoint.com an Internet wine bar located on Via Saleta Plinio. They charge 2€
for fifteen minutes or €6 per hour for use of either the wifi or a computer. They also have a
printing service which costs 50 cents per A4 sheet.
All the hotels have WiFi, just ask for a code from reception. The Hotel Splendide charges a small
fee.
Newsagent
There is a tobacconist opposite the passenger ferry terminal where you can also buy newspapers,
cigarettes and bus tickets to Lecco. They also stamps to the United Kingdom which cost 95 cents
each.
Pharmacy
The pharmacy is located on Via Roma, and is open from 8.30am - 12.30pm & 3.30pm - 7.30pm on

weekdays and from 9.00am-12.30pm & 4pm-7.30pm on bank holidays and Sundays.
Outside the pharmacy there is a small box with a screen which is the out of hours pharmacy
service. It shows where the nearest pharmacist on duty is and has a button that allows you to
make an emergency call to that pharmacist.
Railway station
The nearest station to your resort is Varenna, however there are others in Como Town and Lecco.
There are regular, direct trains to Milan, Bergamo and the surrounding area, please see your
Holiday Advisor or the "Getting Around" section for more information on the local train services.
Varenna can be reached via the ferry; Como and Lecco can be reached by using the ferry or the
local buses.
Supermarket
There is a small greengrocer located on Via Garibaldi, the main street at the top of the town, and
is open every day from 8am - 12.30pm; and 3.30pm - 7.30pm Tuesday to Saturday. They sell
snacks, fruit and vegetables and bottled water.
There is also another Mini-market located behind the cafe, near to the San Giacomo church.
Tourist information
The Tourist information office is on Piazza Mazzini and is open weekdays from 9am- 12.30pm and
1.30pm - 5.30pm; and Sundays from 10.30am-12.30pm and 2.30pm - 5.30pm. You can also go to
the Promo Bellagio office, located in the Medieval tower in the Piazza Della Chiesa (near the
church), which has the same opening hours.

do not go out of date. You will find information about local places to buy tickets on each bus
stop.You cannot get a return ticket, so you will need to buy two single tickets. When you board
the bus the driver will tear off a small strip on the ticket so that it cannot be used again.
Bus tickets can be purchased from the small supermarket behind the Britannia hotel, the
Company bar next door to the Britannia hotel, or the shop next door to the Grand Hotel
Cadenabbia.

Church
There is a Roman Catholic Church located behind the Britannia Excelsior Hotel, up the hill in the
village of Griante, and an Anglican church opposite the ferry point. The Anglican church holds

There is free WiFi at the Il Tana bar next to the ferry port, as well as La Grolla Restaurant at the
end of the promenade. The Hotel Bellavista and the Grand Hotel Menaggio have free WiFi, just

There is a newsagents on Via Calvi that sells English newspapers, bus tickets and local maps and
postcards. They are open every day from 6:30am but closed on Sunday afternoon.

There is a pharmacy opposite the Hotel Bellavista which is open from 8.30am - 12.30pm and 3pm
- 7pm every day during July and August.

There is a post office located on Via Lusardi which is open from Monday to Friday 8.30am - 2pm

There is a small mini-market next to the Grand Hotel Menaggio (go up the steps opposite the
petrol station) which seems to sell anything you would need! Open Monday - Saturday, 9am 12:00, and 3pm- 6pm, and closed on Sundays.
There is a larger supermarket called Conad located on Via Lusardi, just head past the church and
you'll see it on your right after about 500 yards. It is open from 8am - 12.30pm and 3.30pm 7pm.
Tourist information
The Tourist information office is located on Piazza Garibaldi. It is closed on Sunday & Monday, but
open Tuesday - Saturday from 9am- 12.30pm and 2.30pm - 6pm.
Tremezzo

GETTING AROUND
Here a re some ba sics to help you get a round La ke Como a nd the surrounding

Buses
The bus service on Lake Como is fairly regular. Tickets must always be purchased in advance and
do not go out of date, you will find information of where to buy tickets at each bus stop. Return
tickets are not available, so just buy two singles. When you board the bus the driver will tear off a
small strip on the ticket so that it cannot be used again.
Please bear in mind that the normal tickets do not offer a hop-on hop-off service. If you wish to
visit several places around the route then you can buy daily tickets starting from around 8€. A
single ticket to Como Town costs around €4.
As well as the local bus to Como Town, there are other services to go further afield from
Menaggio bus station to places such as Lugano, Colico and Porlezza, and Lecco, Como and Asso
from Bellagio.

Ferries
For Menaggio, Varenna, Belaggio, Cadenabbia, Villa Carlotta, Tremezzo and Lenno there is an
excellent central lake ticket which can be purchased for either 1 or 6 consecutive days. This ticket
allows you to hop on and hop off either the passenger or car ferry as many times as you like. Your
name will be printed on the 6 day ticket so you will need to take some ID with you to the ticket
office. For anyone over the age of 65, you are entitled to a discount of around 10% off your ferry
ticket. Just make sure you have some ID with you when buying your tickets. This does not apply
to the 6-day rover tickets or at weekends.

There are three types of ferries on Lake Como:
Car Ferry (Servizio Autotraghetto)
This service can be used by cars and foot passengers. The ferry travels around the central part of
the lake between Menaggio, Bellagio, Varenna and Cadenabbia.
There are 2 sections on the timetable, blue for Monday - Saturday, and yellow for Sundays and
public holidays.
Passenger Ferry (Battello)
There are various services from Colico to Como and also around the central lake area.

The timetable shows all routes around the lake, half from Como to Colico (South to North) and the
other half from Colico to Como (North to South).
The ferries with the white boxes at the top of the timetable run everyday, including Sundays and
public holidays (Festivi).
If there is a yellow box at the top of the schedule, this is a Sunday or Festivi only service and
doesn't run on any other day.
Blue boxes at the top of the timetable indicate the ferry only runs on working days (Monday to
Saturday), so don't expect it to run on Sundays and public holidays.
Ask your Holiday Advisor for the details of the next public holiday.
Fast ferry (Servizio Rapido)
This boat travels up and down the lake from Como to Colico and has it's own section on the
timetable, coloured in orange and white. Please note that there is a supplement for this service.
Tra ins
The nearest stations are Varenna and Como Town. From these you can catch the train to Milan and
the surrounding areas. Como can be reached by using the ferry or local buses, and Varenna can be
reached by ferry.
Train tickets can be bought locally in some travel agents or at the train station in Como;
alternatively, they can be purchased on the train.
If you have been able to purchase your ticket in advance you’ll need to validate your ticket before
you travel, so don’t forget to put it in one of the small yellow machines you see on the platform.
If you haven’t been able to buy a ticket before you travel, please speak to the conductor on the
train at your earliest opportunity.
The train services from Varenna and Como Lago Nord are operated by Trenord, and for details on
their timetables go to http://www.trenord.it/en/timetable/timetable.aspx, or for all other train
services in Italy, including from Como San Giovanni, go to http://www.trenitalia.com.
Noddy Train
For a different way of getting around, take the small noddy train between Menaggio and Lenno.
It leaves from outside the Piazza Garibaldi in Menaggio and takes just over half an hour to arrive
in Lenno. Tickets are bought from the driver before you get on board, and cost €5 one-way, €8
return; or a hop-on hop-off daily ticket costs €12. The service starts around 10am until 10pm, or
11pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and there is a special service on Tuesday morning to take you to
the market in Lenno. Please note there is a supplement to daily tickets if you wish to use the
train after 6pm.
You will also find a little Noddy Train in Bellagio, offering a scenic tour around the suburbs and
back streets of Bellagio.

To travel around the lake in style why not hire a boat for the day? Boat hire is available from
Menaggio and Lenno, and a full day costs around €300 for a boat which holds 8.
Local car hire is available in Menaggio from €50 per day; and in Bellagio from €75 per day. Please
speak to your Holiday Advisor for details.

Villa Balbianello Boat Tour
Villa Balbianello is not to be missed, it holds the most spectacular spot on the lake and is the
No.1 villa of the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (the Italian National Trust)
The villa houses a collection of rare artefacts from all over the world
We will take you on our private boat to the villa landing stage, before a guided tour around the
villa by one of the local FAI guides
If you are a member of the National Trust in the UK don't forget to bring your membership card
with you for a discount on the excursion price.
The walk from the boat landing stage to the villa entrance includes an uphill section as well as
steps, please check with your Holiday Advisor if you have any walking difficulties.

If you wish to go into the Duomo, make sure you wear longer shorts or skirts (down to about the
knee), and have your shoulders covered. There are security personnel at the entrance to the
Cathedral who will turn you away if they feel you are not properly dressed.

The little town of Orta is built on a hillside where a tourist train will take you from the coach,
nearer to the town centre. For those who find walking distances difficult, please inform us before
you go on the excursion and a taxi into the village centre can be arranged at an extra charge.
Entrance to the palace and gardens of Isola Bella is priced at 13€ per person (adult), or free on
production of a valid Royal Horticultural Society membership card.
Both Orta and Isola Bella have many cobbled streets, so we advise wearing comfortable shoes on

Il Costantin in Menaggio shows sports and serves reasonably priced pizza, pasta and locally
caught fish, in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere
The Lido di Lenno is situated just in front of the Villa Balbianello where you can enjoy a
relaxing lunch, or later on make use of the nightclub which is open until the early hours during
the summer
Parco Mayer in Tremezzo holds various open air events in the evenings, ranging from local live
bands to Jazz and open air cinema nights
Victoria Bar in Cadenabbia is the perfect place to go and relax with a good cup of tea and a

Don’t miss the churches of the local area which are all free to enter, just remember to cover

Venture up to the Lago di Piano on the C12 bus which runs frequently in the afternoons from
Menaggio where you can explore the Lake on a beautiful 3 hour walk
Spend a few hours in the gardens of Villa Melzi in Bellagio. Only €6.50 to wander around the
botanical haven. Or head to the Villa Serbelloni on the peak of Bellagio where you can see all 3
branches of the lake from these majestic gardens (guided tours only)
Rent a bike and get off the beaten track. This saves money on public transport and you can
explore the hidden gems of Lake Como at your own pace. Rent them from the Youth Hostel in
Menaggio where it costs only €35 per day for 2 bikes
Take the C10 bus to Dongo where you can visit the Abbey and some of the churches that once
used to make up the three parishes of the medieval county Tre Pievi

Bellano is a quiet town on the mouth of the Pioverna stream. It is host to the Orrido gorge,
formed 15 million years ago by the waters of Pioverna. Explore the raised walkways around
the gorge for just 3€. Bellano can be reached by train or bus from Varenna, or by using the
ferry
See the beautiful views from the gardens of the Villa Cipressi (named after its many rows of
Cypress trees) and the Villa Monestero over in Varenna. If you look carefully you may even
recognise some of the views from the Thomson Lakes & Mountains brochure
Mandello Del Lario on the Lecco side of the lake is the home of the Moto Guzzi factory. You
can take the train or ferry from Varenna to explore the fascinating museum there, and revel in
the history of this iconic Italian motorcycle brand.
Discover the less touristy side of the lake towards the town of Lecco, where the river Adda
flows out of the lake. Take the train or ferry from Varenna, or the bus or ferry from Bellagio
Shopping
Make a visit to the local market to pick up some souvenirs. Lenno has a great market on a
Tuesday morning
Buy your Italian specialties in resort as they can be more expensive at the airport. When
taking bottles, remember they need to be packed in your case, so ask for them to be wrapped
properly when buying
Bellagio is full of artisan shops, selling luxurious hand-made shoes, beautiful Como silks, and
plenty of glass souvenirs. Don’t forget to check out the shop on Via Garibaldi which has
everything you can think of from children’s toys to extraordinary yacht models made of wood
Head to the Boutique di Buon Gusto (the shop of good taste) in Bellagio to try some of the
local meats, cheeses and wines. See your Holiday Advisor to find out how to get a discount in

Why not take a day out to Como, the largest town on the lake. Take the C10 bus and explore
the area which is full of traditional shops and souvenirs. You can take the slow ferry back and
see the lake from a different angle
Don't miss visiting the fashion capital of the world. See Milan in all its glory where you'll find a
huge range of shops, from small market stalls to Dior, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Gucci
Relaxing
There are many lido's around the lake providing great swimming and sunbathing spots as well
as cafes and restaurants. Why not try the ones in Cadenabbia and Bellagio?
In the town of Menaggio, stroll along the lake front and enjoy an ice cream and a round of mini
golf at La Grolla restaurant
Take a ride on the Noddy Train in Bellagio to the traditional fishing village of Pescallo, and
discover the little-known suburbs of this beautiful town
If you don't fancy paying for entry at one of the lido's, you can use the public beaches available,
they also offer some great spots for swimming. You can try the one between Cadenabbia and
Menaggio, or the one near to the hamlet of Saint Giovanni in Bellagio for the best spots

Roman times. It was given to the Italian government by the king of Belgium and it is now state
owned and flies both the Belgian and Italian flags.
Como
Como is a historic walled city, and was the home of the silk industry until the middle of the 20th
Century. Why not visit the Villa Olma and the Alessandro Volta museum on the lakefront? The
town has a vast array of shops, many specialising in the local silks as well as a beautiful Baroque
Cathedral, the biggest on Lake Como.
Brunate
Situated above the town of Como, you can easily climb the hill using the funicular from the
lakefront in Como to Brunate. After a stroll to the top of the hill, you will come across Alessandro
Voltas' lighthouse offering amazing views over the lower end of the lake. The funicular runs daily
and costs 3.90€ return.
Pescallo
The tiny fishing village of Pescallo is situated on the eastern leg of the lake, looking down towards
Mandello del Lario and is one of the few remaining towns where commercial fishing is still
allowed on Lake Como. It has a wonderful restaurant where you can eat some of the fresh fish of
the lake.
Varenna
This is a tranquil ancient town full of seduction and charm. Take the lakeside promenade to the
old town which leads you to a variety of restaurants where you can enjoy lunch whilst soaking in
the marvelous views. From Varenna you can head up to the Castello di Vezio and watch the
falconers work their birds.
Pino
An easy walk from Varenna along the lakefront is the small town of Pino. Here you will see and
hear the Fiumelatte, one of the shortest rivers in Italy. Named after the milky white waters that
flow down the mountain side into the lake, you can take a walk up to where the river flows out of
a small cave in the mountain side, a perfect spot for a picnic.
Argegno
A beautiful lakeside town, one of the oldest on Lake Como. With a charming selection of lakeside
cafes and restaurants you can enjoy your lunch overlooking the deepest part of the lake, or take
one of the steepest cable cars in Europe up to the town of Pigra.
Pigra
A quiet town on top of the mountain, 850m above sea level where you can enjoy some amazing
views both up and down the lake, and soak up the tranquillity of this lazy little town.

Along the lakeside promenade in Bellagio you will find the 18th century Villa Melzi. Set in lush

series alongside Villa Carlotta.

At the top of the hill behind Bellagio these gardens offer amazing views over the three legs of
Lake Como. Privately owned nowadays, you can visit the gardens by booking at the Promo

Villa Cipressi
In the small town of Varenna you will come across the Villa Cipressi, named for all the Cypress
trees in the gardens. The gardens offer some wonderful views down the Lecco leg of the lake, and

Just next door to the Villa Cipressi you will see the former monastery of Villa Monestero. These
terraced gardens offer the best views over Bellagio, Menaggio and the central part of the lake,

On the outskirts of Como, you will see the grand façade of the Villa Olmo, named after the giant

Lake Como Inf o pack
We have included a section of hints and tips for while you are in Italy, but come and see us if you
think we have missed anything.
Out and about
The tap water in your hotel is perfectly drinkable, although you may notice a difference
compared to your water at home. Cheap bottled water is widely available in the local
supermarkets
Many of the supermarkets have fresh fruit available, in many places they will select the
produce for you - there will be a sign 'no self service', so it is easy to understand when you are
allowed to pick them yourself.
When looking for places to eat, don't forget that there can be a cover charge (coperto), or a
service charge (servizio) added to your bill. These will always be displayed on the menu outside
the restaurant so you can check it out before you go in
Restaurants on the lakefront can often be more aimed at tourists, and more expensive - head
into the back-streets of the towns for some more local eateries
Your Holiday Advisor will give you tried and tested suggestions of places to eat around the
area, so go and see them for some great local suggestions
Local specialities such as Mussiltini (a lake fish often served with pasta), Persico (perch often
served with rice) and other lake fish can be found in many of the restaurants of the area, and
are a delicious treat after a day exploring the area
Try the local meats and cheeses such as Bresaola, salami piccante (spicy salami) and the Casera
cheese in many of the shops around Lake Como
Lake Como has it's own olive oil production (Lenno) and wine areas (Domaso), so don't miss out
on these excellent local flavours
Public transport
When using the local buses don't forget to buy your ticket in advance or the driver may not
even let you on the bus. The local shops where you can buy the tickets will be listed at the top
of the timetable at each bus stop
The train service around lake Como goes from Varenna and Como and is operated by
Trenord. The timetables can be found on their website
http://www.trenord.it/en/timetable/timetable.aspx You can buy your ticket on the train if
there is not enough time to get one before you get on, just go and find the conductor as soon
as possible to avoid a fine
The little noddy train running between Menaggio and Lenno is a great way to get out and
explore the local area - use it to get to some of the villas and gardens around the lake
In Milan there is a great public transport network to get around the city, just ask your Holiday
Advisor for further information
Italian customs
In Italy you will often find that the shops are closed in the middle of the day for the siesta
between 12.30pm and 3pm. Many shops also have a day off during the week so watch out for
these
The local markets are great for grabbing a bargain, but don't forget to haggle the price down a
little bit too
Many Europeans will leave a tip after a coffee and round the price up to the nearest whole
euro. In restaurants people often leave around 10% of the bill as a tip, and don't forget to
show your appreciation to the coach drivers too!
The aperitivo buffets in many Italian cafes and bars are a great way of getting a little snack.
Many places will give you a plate with olives, meats & cheeses, or crisps with a glass of wine or
beer during the late afternoon

Public toilets can be difficult to find and different to what you may be used to, and often cost
up to €1 to use. Why not pop into a local cafe, grab a quick drink and use the facilities in there,
as they are easier to find
