**ALL TRANSFER STUDENTS TO UNLV MUST SEE MRS. RISKE FOR PLACEMENT IN FUNCTIONAL PIANO CLASSES. E-mail is: [email protected] NOTE The material contained in this booklet has been selected and compiled for the purpose of assisting the student in preparation of piano proficiency exams, especially in the areas of technique, (scales and inversions) and harmonization (chord progressions, harmonizing with V7/V, and 7th chords.) Scales, inversions, and chord progressions should be played with an even rhythm, tempo, and correct fingering. There are sufficient examples for harmonizing with I, IV, V7 in keys up to four sharps and four flats followed by a "practice" chord progression using the V7/V. There are nine melodies which require the V7/V. The student should be aware of harmony rules using the proper inversions when necessary to avoid parallel fifths and octaves. The entire group of non-modulating melodies also serve as practice examples for transposition. Transpose each up or down a major or minor second, as well as a major or minor third. The page headed "7th chords" is left hand preparation for harmonizing a lead sheet. It should be practiced with an established rhythm and tempo. A group of relatively familiar popular tunes follow this. The student should learn all three of these, but these are for practice only, and SHOULD NOT BE USED for the proficiency jury. They will not be accepted as a seventh chord study. If there is a problem with choosing a seventh chord study, please see me or your private teacher. The student is also encouraged to develop stylistic accompaniment patterns with both the left and right hands, if technically applicable. Both "America" and "Star Spangled Banner" should be learned at a tempo appropriate for large group singing, and with an appropriate introduction. Careful attention to fingering will insure success in the preparation of these. Pedaling is encouraged. Students achieving an overall average of B or higher at the end of each semester in all four levels of Functional Piano, without failures in any section, will be exempt from having to play a Proficiency jury at the end of their studies. Students who do not achieve this after the final exam will be required to play their jury on the Friday of final exams week Students wishing accreditation for Proficiency on their transcripts must register for MUS 167, a non-credit number at no cost. Failure to pass proficiency jury is an "F" for MUS 210. Piano proficiency juries will be given 2 times per year, for the four years of school study,on the Friday of final exams week of both the Spring and Fall semesters. A sign up sheet will be on the door of HFA 218 two weeks before the juries. BARBARA RISKE PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION 1. TECHNIQUE a.
