Cordell Cordaro’s colorful
crowd of characters seem
to have walked out of
many different types of
story-realms. If you look
closely, you will begin to
notice his subjects are
less deliberate individuals than vignettes of
familiar-to-youth, intimate moments bubbling
just beneath the playful adventure stories or
the glossy, fashionable veneers of the elegant
life. With studied skill, Cordell conveys a
sense of fragile beauty born within each figure.
Stylistically, Cordell’s party-scene works nod
to Egon Schiele’s elegant waifs, in which
anatomical distortions convey emotional truths,
but his gestural brushstrokes and playful,
mythic injections make his prolific portfolio
firmly his own. An increasing master of several
media, Cordell’s work includes paintings, ink
drawings, and combinations of the two. His
beloved oeuvre has found patrons across
the world. Cordell participates in shows in
New York City and Florida, and his work has
also reached audiences in California, Greece,
Singapore, and the UK.
Dear Friends,
You can also see new works from featured artists

St. Monci’s first
exposure to art
began in the
streets of Puerto
Rico, where he
spent most of his childhood. He was
immediately drawn to the transformative
qualities of graffiti and street art and
quickly immersed himself in the culture.
It wasn’t until he returned to the States
that he began to pursue and study art
in its many forms. He eventually earned
an MA in Studio Art at SUNY Oswego
where he began to evolve and grow
beyond his graffiti roots. His current work
examines the most fundamental qualities
of making and seeing; in color, form
and composition, while still employing
a certain street aesthetic. He currently
resides and works in Rochester, NY.
Murals by St. Monci can be seen in
Rochester at The Little Theatre, 1975
Gallery and in the Southwedge among
other places.
••
Shawnee
grew up in the
Finger Lakes
around her
grandmother’s
porcelain doll
business and sculpture studio.
It was the beginning of her
interest in drawing figures and
portraits. After graduating from
Pratt Institute in 2008 she spent
time in California and eventually
decided to come back to
Rochester to work. Since
then, she has created a body
of work that has progressed
in the development of theme
and style with each new piece.
Currently she is looking to
focus on large scale
painting and mural work.
Murals by Shawnee can be
seen in Rochester on the
side of Fuego Coffee and
The Bug Jar.

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the
end of the Vietnam War. To honor our veterans, we are proud to
present the Academy Award-nominated film Last Days in Vietnam.
We will first offer a free screening of the film at the Little Theatre
on April 21 at 7 p.m. (it will broadcast on WXXI-TV on Tuesday,
April 28 at 9 p.m). WXXI recently convened a group of Board
Members and community leaders to form a Veterans Affairs Task
Force. Its mission is to identify the most pressing needs and
issues facing veterans and their families in the Greater Rochester
and surrounding areas and to make recommendations about ways
that WXXI and The Little’s programming and outreach can help
address those needs. By connecting veterans to resources and
information, WXXI can help strengthen the entire community. You’ll
be hearing more about this initiative in coming months. Norm Silverstein

If you had a chance to hear the pilot episode of Unleashed: The Pet
Show, which premiered last month on AM 1370, WRUR, and WEOS
(Geneva), please let me know what you think. The pilot episode,
hosted by WXXI’s Beth Adams and Penfield Veterinary Hospital’s
Dr. Erik Herrema, shared stories of remarkable pets and their
owners and invited listeners to call in with their own pet stories and
questions. You can also listen to it online at WXXI.org/unleashed
and then share your thoughts in the comment section on that page.
We hope that Unleashed can become a regular series, but we need
the community’s feedback to help make that happen.

I’ve been hearing from a lot of you
about the season finale of Downton
Abbey. Variety’s TV columnist, Brian
Lowry, said “the fifth-season finale
offered a welcome reminder of just
Norm Silverstein
how splendid the show can be –
warm, funny and emotional on a dazzling assortment of fronts.”
I have to agree with him. Julian Fellows worked his magic and
moved many storylines forward for a satisfying end. (If only we
didn’t have to wait nine months for the next season to begin!)

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter
In 1970 Frank J. Annese founded Annese & Associates, Inc., as a company selling
technologies like modems and multiplexers in Herkimer, N.Y. Upon his retirement
in late 2008, ownership transferred to his four daughters. Annese is now officially
recognized as a women-owned business enterprise. In 2015 Annese celebrates 45
years in business with more than 120 employees across New York State. Ray Apy,
President and CEO, provides insights below on how the company has evolved from a
manufacturer’s rep into a value-added reseller, a managed service provider, and an
integrator of cloud-based solutions.
Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Annese & Associates?
A. Annese has enjoyed steady growth as a result of a keen focus on our
employees, culture, and clients. We go to great lengths to provide a rewarding working
environment. Our founder always said, “Take care of your employees and they will take
care of your customers.” We still live by that philosophy today. Annese specializes in
technology systems for corporations, education, healthcare, and government entities
in the areas of cloud solutions, network infrastructure, collaboration, data center and
virtualization, and all the requisite professional consulting and managed services
associated with each. We proudly closed 2014 at just over $100M in revenue, and continue
to reinvest in the business to bring new products, services, and capabilities to the forefront.
A commitment to high employee and customer satisfaction will always be my top priority.
Q. How would you describe cloud infrastructure to those unfamiliar with the terminology?
A. The cloud is the next wave of centralized computing. Cloud infrastructure contains all
the hardware and software components — servers, storage, and operating systems —
needed to meet the computing requirements of a hosted application or storage delivery
model. The fundamentals of the cloud can be found in a video Q&A on our company’s blog:
www.annese.com/cloudprimer
Q. Any suggestions for young entrepreneurs in this field?
A. Focus your creative talent on finding simple solutions to the complexity and cost of the
“standard” IT delivery paradigms. Ray Apy, President and CEO

Throughout her four-decade career,
music superstar Annie Lennox has
defied categorization, diving into
blues, soul, folk and pop to create
songs that captivate and transcend
boundaries. In her latest album,
Nostalgia, Lennox reveals yet another
dimension to her formidable talent.
Although jazz is not the genre for
which she is best known, she could no
longer resist the magnetic pull of some
of the most memorable melodies and
lyrics from the American Songbook—
songs like “Summertime,” “Georgia
on My Mind,” “You Belong to Me,”
“I Cover the Waterfront” and “God
Bless the Child.” Lennox’s sublime
interpretations bring a hypnotic
intimacy to these timeless classics.
TVHIGHLIGHTS
This 2015 Academy Award-nominated documentary chronicles the chaotic
final days of the Vietnam War as the North Vietnamese Army closed
in on Saigon. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, American
officers on the ground faced a moral dilemma: follow official policy and
evacuate U.S. citizens and their dependents only, or ignore orders and
save the men, women, and children they had come to value and love
in their years in Vietnam. At the risk of their careers and possible courtmartial, a handful of individuals took matters into their own hands.
Engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations, they waged
a desperate effort to evacuate as many South Vietnamese as possible. ••

ON THE OTHER
SIDE OF THE FENCE
SUNDAY, APRIL 26 AT 3PM
Don’t miss this warm-hearted documentary about
acceptance and diversity. Produced by Henry
Nevison, On the Other Side of the Fence spotlights
a 30-year partnership between two Philadelphia
schools, whose students learn the values of
tolerance, acceptance, and unity by producing and
performing in an original musical.
This film is part of a year-long initiative called MOVE TO
INCLUDE, a project funded by the Golisano Foundation to
build a more inclusive community by inspiring and motivating
people to embrace different abilities and include all people in
every aspect of community life.

TAXED OFF
In this one-hour special, investigative
journalist and public radio producer
Audrey Quinn gathers elected officials, tax
experts, and individual citizens to explore
the grand experiment that is the U.S tax
system. It examines how three state
governors changed the tax codes in their
states, how state taxes are used to woo
new residents, how corporate taxes affect
American businesses abroad and tax
revenue at home, how state and federal
income taxes affect American families, and
the possible changes to the system.

INTELLIGENCE SQUARED US:
SHOULD THE U.S. ADOPT THE
“RIGHT TO BE FORGOTTEN” ONLINE?
SUNDAY, APRIL 12 AT 9PM ON AM 1370
In 2014, the European Union’s Court of Justice
determined that individuals have a right to be
forgotten, “the right — under certain conditions —
to ask search engines to remove links with personal
information about them.” In a half year following
the Court’s decision, Google received over 180,000
removal requests. Of those reviewed and processed,
40.5% were granted. Was this ruling a blow to free
speech and public information, or a win for privacy
and human dignity?
BURN: THE ADAPTORS
SUNDAY, APRIL 19 AT 9PM ON AM 1370
Hosted by public radio veterans Alex Chadwick
and Flora Lichtman, The Adaptors chronicles
how people are adapting to climate change.
Adaptors are all around us: from the farmers
and coastal-dwellers finding new ways to work
and live, to the scientists thinking outside the
box about energy, to corporate leaders bringing
new technologies to market, to the garage
tinkerers and DIY inventors dreaming up the
next big thing in green living.
INTELLIGENCE SQUARED US:
HAS THE PRESIDENT EXCEEDED
HIS AUTHORITY BY WAGING WAR
WITHOUT CONGRESS?
SUNDAY, APRIL 26 AT 9PM ON AM 1370
The President has launched a sustained,
long-term military campaign against the Islamic
State of Iraq and the Levant. But did he have
constitutional power to do so? The Constitution
carefully divides the war powers of the United
States between Congress and the President.
Did he exceed his authority and violate the
Constitution?

THE LITTLE UNDERGROUND FILM SERIES
On Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4, The Little is proud to present The Little Underground Film Series, celebrating
visionaries, agitators, and revolutionaries in the art of filmmaking. The Little staff loves to find these films so you don’t have to!
Kumiko
the Treasure Hunter
Friday April 3, 7:00 p.m.
General admission: $8.00 with discount
for seniors, students, and Little members
In this darkly comedic odyssey,
Academy Award nominee Rinko
Kikuchi stars as Kumiko, a
frustrated office worker whose
imagination transcends the
confines of her mundane life.
When she watches a film and
believes she’s found a clue
about cash buried in North
Dakota, she sets off on a
dangerous adventure unlike
anything she’s seen in the
movies.
Hausu
(with live accompaniment by
the Andrew Alden Ensemble)
Friday, April 3, 10:00 p.m.
General admission: $10, with discount
for seniors, students and Little members
Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977
film Hausu is a psychedelic
ghost tale following a schoolgirl
traveling to her ailing aunt’s
creaky country home, where she
comes face to face with many
ghoulish surprises. The Andrew
Alden Ensemble will accompany
this film with live music, written
specifically for Hausu – just like
in the glory days of silent film,
with a Little twist!

Short Circuit: Series 1
represents a cross-section of
some of the most daring and
interesting films being made
independently and completely
outside of the mainstream
of cinema. The films and
filmmakers presented here
offer a glimpse at the future
of underground, independent
cinema and the filmmakers’
passion, experimentation,
and spirit of resistance to the
status quo.

In 1993, artist Anselm Kiefer
left Germany for La Ribaute,
a derelict silk factory in the
South of France. In 2000 he
began constructing a series of
elaborate installations there.
Like a strange, sprawling
village, La Ribaute is composed
of old industrial buildings and
working studios that link to a
network of underground tunnels
dug out by Kiefer. This film tells
the story of his artistic process.

RENOWNED COLUMBIA PROFESSOR
JAMES
HANSEN
COMING TO the LITTLE theatre
On April 20 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is
hosting a screening of indie film Future
Weather, followed by a talk by renowned
Columbia professor and climate expert
James Hansen, Ph.D.
This screening and talk are part of The
Little’s Science on Screen series, a national
program in which theaters pair films with
talks by science and technology experts.
About Dr. Hansen: Dr. James Hansen,
formerly director of the NASA Goddard
Institute for Space Studies, is Adjunct
Professor and at Columbia University’s
Earth Institute, where he directs a program in
Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions.
He has won over 40 awards for his work,
including the NASA Distinguished Medal and
the Center for International Environmental
Law’s Frederick R. Anderson Award for
Outstanding Contributions to Addressing
Climate Change.
About the film: Lauduree is a 13-year-old
loner, passionate about nature and
obsessed with ecological disaster. Greta,
her grandmother, is a fiery nurse jaded by
alcohol and disappointment. When Lauduree
is abruptly abandoned by her dreamer single
mom, she decides to take survival into her
own hands, forcing her and Greta to learn to
trust each other and leap into the unknown.
India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai
airport lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own.
On Thursday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 4 at 12:00 p.m., The Little is proud to
present the National Theatre Live production of Behind the Beautiful Forevers.
Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house.
Sunil, 12 and stunted, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to
steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a “first-class person,” while her
daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate.
Katherine Boo spent three years in Annawadi recording the lives of its residents. From
her uncompromising book, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction in 2012,
David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale.
NT Live is really something to see. The best theatre performances from London’s West
End are recorded with cameras positioned throughout the theatre, ensuring Little
audiences get the best seat in the house every time.
This play contains strong language and some scenes of violence. It’s suitable for children 14 and over.
