Welcome to the 17th Nantwich Jazz, Blues & Music Festival!
This year’s event is going to be one of the most
eclectic events ever, I think we have got something
for everybody.
It will certainly be good for those of us who enjoyed
the music of the 80’s & 90’s. Headline acts such as;
The Wonder Stuff, Courtney Pine, Mike Peters
from the Alarm, one of my favourite bands of all
time Shakatak who have been touring all round the
world and have sold millions of albums since they
formed in 1980, and Sad Café who are touring for
the first time in twenty five years.
The Blockheads are back and so is Connie Lush
and her Blues Shouter Band. We have had
countless requests from fans asking for their return
so we just had to.
We have a new venue this year joining us, which I
am really pleased about, our newly named bar and
night club, The Studio (formerly Gregory’s, Roosters,
Pluto’s, The Wayfarer and The Birdcage) I actually
went to all of them! They will be staging events all
over the Easter weekend.
Wristbands will go on sale as usual on Thursday
28th March or you can order them online at

bands than ever appearing at the best and most
loyal venues in the town.
Please be aware that only gigs that are listed in the
around the town events are part of our festival.
The festival will be staging two free concerts this
year on the town square. On Saturday we have for
the first time one of South Cheshire’s most popular
bands Blozone with their Blues soul and swing
style they should have the whole town dancing. On
Monday we will have our family fun day again with
one of country’s top jump Jive bands the Jive Aces,
who were the semi-finalists of Britain’s Got Talent in
2012.
I hope you all have a great time at this year’s festival,
and we will look forward to seeing new and old faces
over the Easter weekend.

Famous for his funny, provocative, visceral lyrics, Ian Drury
was a rock-and-roll poet and legendary force on the London
music scene from 1970 onwards. When he teamed up with a
band called The Blockheads, a new era in New Wave music
exploded into being, as they turned out hits like “Sex and
Drugs and Rock and Roll”, “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick”
and “Reasons to Be Cheerful”.

Damn Vandals’ new debut album ‘Done For Desire’ became
Shaun Keaveny’s Record Of The Week on BBC 6Music.
Featured recently on Sky TV, accolades have been flowing
– including making Bloomberg’s ‘Best CDs of 2012’ list and
earning a remarkable 10/10 from The Press Association.

No musician more embodies the dramatic transformation in
the British jazz scene over the past twenty years than Courtney

broadened their styles to take jazz out to a wider audience.
Debuting material from his 15th studio album to date, House
of Legends sees Courtney return to the instrument he is best
known for - the Saxophone and features his soprano sax
exclusively for the first time.
Expect an exhilarating mix of Merengue, Ska, Mento and
Calypso as played through the lens (saxophone) of a UK born

Front man of 80s and 90s alt-pop hit makers The Wonder Stuff,
Miles Hunt takes to the stage with violinist Erica Nockalls for
a fast paced acoustic night of their hits plus new enlivening
folk and smart, catchy pop. With a live album and two studio
albums now under their belt, the duo regularly tour the length
and breadth of the UK, playing to both smaller audiences
and large festival crowds alike supplying a mix of tracks from
Hunt’s entire career, alongside inter-song banter and some

An old friend of The Festival and back by popular demand.
Recently Connie has performed in over 30 countries. She
has played at some of Europe’s largest and most prestigious
festivals, including Glastonbury Festival and wowing audiences
in Moscow, New York and LA. She has been recognised as
one of the finest Blues singers in the UK, winning five times,
“Best Female Vocalist UK” earning a place in the gallery of
greats, alongside Alexis Corner and Eric Clapton. Twice
voted “European Blues Vocalist of the year” by the French
Blues Trophies Awards” and nominated again “Best UK Blues
Vocalist” 2011-2012.
Trish Watt is a blues guitarist and singer from Cheshire who
has gigged across the UK and Europe. A sensational artist to

Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity
rarely paralleled in contemporary music. After a number of
successful singles in the UK the band scored unprecedented
international success with the release of the classic album
“Night Birds” and the title track has become a standard in
the popular music repertoire.
Their performance in Japan’s Budoken Hall won them a Silver
Award at the Tokyo International Song Festival and other
awards included the “Best Instrumental Album” for three
consecutive years.
Optimystik Visionaries are a four piece Space Fusion
Jazz Rock band, bringing out the best of originally written
instrumental music back to the forefront with clever time
signatures and lead line melodies in latin/funk/jazz/rock
styles.

have been the best live band on the planet. Their new activity
means that there is no better time than now to discover this
band who were without doubt one of Manchester’s finest.
Led by long-time members Ian Wilson, Dave Irving, Ashley
Mulford and Des Tong and augmented by new lead vocalist,
Steve Whalley (ex-Slade), this is the band that brought you

THE FOLKWITS - Have been delighting audiences far and wide
with their own brand of nu-folk music. The Audlem based duo are

BOBCAT BILLY’S MOONSHINE MISSION - Rockabilly five piece

THE SESSIONS RHYTHM & BLUES BIG BAND - Perform from
a wide repertoire that encompasses soul and blues, through to
boogie-woogie, along with some modern favourites. Showcasing
a mix of vocal and instrumental numbers, the band shares an
enthusiasm for the diverse musical tastes of Jools Holland and
includes a selection of his best-loved repertoire in each set.

WITH BOB ON OUR SIDE - Now in its 14th year, this versatile
and innovative six-piece outfit perform a wide range of songs

the band has a passion for solid, driving, no-compromise blues.
Take Luke Shaw, the UK Blues Harmonica Champion two years
on the run, add Rick Lacey, one of the (if not The) North West’s
finest blues drummers. Complement them with a high-energy
rock-solid double bass player in the form of Martin Cox; then for
the final piece of the jigsaw, light the blue touch-paper that is the
incendiary guitar delivery of Nic Elsby - stand well back and enjoy
the fireworks.

blend of Blues, Rock and Soul from John Mayall, Climax Blues

whole lot of soul!

CRY BABY & THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE BOYS - Formed in 2008
this six-piece Rhythm and Blues band has been building a strong
reputation with their high-energy dance floor blues show. The
band has enjoyed great success with their debut album ‘Sweet
Thing’ winning best debut album and best European Blues album
from a Canadian Blues Society, in 2012. The Hoochie Coochie
Boys feature Rob Wilkinson aka ‘The Cry Baby’ on blues harp and
Graham ‘Mr. G’ Sells on vocals, G equals gravel voice.

RAIN - Graeme and Sheena bring varied musical tastes together
into a melting pot to deliver a diverse selection of acoustic
numbers, from folk to jazz to blues and everything in between.
Selecting songs that challenge them both, they are guaranteed to
bring a delightfully unique experience to all.

THE BILL DAISON BAND - are so looking forward to returning to
the Festival again, as it’s become one of the highlights of the year
for them. The band members are Bill Daison - Vocals and Guitar/
Slide Guitar, Chris Bevington - Bass Guitar, Ron Rolph - Drums
and Steve Gilbert on Harp. 2012 was a good year for the band,
maintaining a steady set of gigs across the UK performing their
special brand of slide based Guitar blues. We would like to invite
you to come and have a listen, you are all most welcome.
6pm - 8pm THE STUDIO NIGHTCLUB & VENUE
SLIDE BOY ROY - were formed at the beginning of 2005 from
the remnants of three other busy working blues bands. They were
looking to play the blues in there own style but with influences
of some of the best blues artistes around or have been around.
SBR play with good humour no two gigs are the same with their
extensive take on the blues, R’n’B and roots R’n’R. Two guitars,
bass, drums, and harp make Slide Boy Roy kick bottom!

RICK LACEY’S BLUES BAND - This year Rick will be joined by some

ROOTS TO NOWHERE - Starting as a hardcore punk band, their
music has evolved to the more ska/reggae side of punk. Taking
influence from bands such as The Clash, The Specials, Bedouin
Soundclash, and Rancid, without ever forgetting their roots. Their
sound and attitude is solely about enjoying and expressing yourself
through music. Expect dance along songs with tight rhythms and
stabbing lead guitar in which there is always a vision and meaning
along with personal lyrics to which people can relate.
7pm - 9pm HARRISONS
ROB CROSS & THE GRAND HAVANA BAND - A five piece band
from Birmingham formed in 2011, rapidly becoming an exciting,
vastly experienced, musical phenomena. Busy this year, promoting
their great new album of Americana/Rhythm ‘n Blues. A band
definitely not to be missed. Guaranteed to please.
8pm - 10pm THE RED COW
H.T. ROWLEY & ED SULLIVAN - HT Rowley has been playing the
blues for many a year and is joined here by great local harmonica
ace Ed Sullivan, covering songs by Robert Johnson, Muddy
Waters, Howlin Wolf etc. Trevor is renowned for his slide playing,
and has supported the likes of Top Topham (Yardbirds guitarist),
international singer Diana Braithwaite & Steve Phillips (Notting
Hillbillies).

ZOOT SERIOUS & THE BELLYFUL OF BOP - A terrific 11
piece band. From early Louis Jordan to the contemporary styles
sounds of modern swing via classic soul tradition. This very
popular local band will have the marquee audience jump jiving

8pm - 10pm THE BOWLING GREEN
WAYNE & THE HAIRY PEACHES - Over the past four years this
band has gigged Nationwide and have become a household
name around Cheshire. A four piece with a difference, classics
from the 50’s through to the present day; performed with a twist
that has to be seen and heard to be believed. If you fancy a sing
along and a laugh this is one not to be missed.

GAMBLER - A second outing for this superb local three piece
Rock Band, who are one of the Nantwich Festival favourites.

THE PROVIDENCE JUG BAND - Originally played together in
the early 70s, emerging from the bunch of musicians that formed
the backbone of their local folk scene. They reformed some 30
years later to play a range of material from railroad songs, primitive
blues and rude American folktales to ragtime and jazz. The band
consists of Winston on vocals and harmonica, Steve on mandolin,
Keith on tea-chest bass and guitar and Phil on guitar.

THE COWBOY OUTFIT - If you like toe-tapping Honky Tonk music,
this is the band for you. They formed a couple of years ago from
ex-members of The Winchesters, who thrilled the festival-goers
of Europe for over a decade, and The Lonesome and Penniless
Cowboys, Manchester’s longest running Western Swing band.
You’re sure to love The Cowboy Outfit’s sizzling renditions of the
best of Hank Williams, Bob Wills and Johnny Cash, with a few
surprises thrown in!

JIM JAMS - This Liverpool based band has acquired an excellent
reputation as a professional soul/blues/funk outfit that never
disappoint. Established for six years the band consists of four
professional musicians. The leader of the band James Harrison
(Vocalist/Guitarist) has a soulful voice and guitar style. The
remaining members are Mike Smith (sax/keyboards), JJ Rio (bass)
and Jake Woodward (Drums), who have played along side artists
such as Steve Winwood, Sam Brown, The Muffin Men, Kid Creole
and Craig David. These guys are extremely talented and promise
to deliver a superb set.

THE JACK MARSHALL DUO - A captivating mixture of folk,

THE STEVE OAKES QUARTET - The band performs an eclectic
mixture of modern jazz styles comprising be-bop, latin jazz, funk
and contemporary takes on standards. Original compositions are

Courtney Pine. The solos are frequently passionate and intense,
while at other times subtle and reflective. The band has performed
at many major festivals and have a wealth of experience.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST - One of the most iconic films of the
60’s, NorthByNorthwest told the story of mistaken identity. There’s
no mistaking where a brand new five-piece outfit of the same name
is headed however. With one goal in mind, it’s a quest to bring to
you the very best in smooth jazz. To calm the spirit and fire the soul.
An unmissable show for any regular listeners to Jazz FM and a real
treat for musicians of all ages.
bluegrass is more - so much more. The Slippery Hill Boys’ music
takes in lightning fast bluegrass classics, soulful harmonies and
gospel tunes. It’s rare to have one highly talented banjo player in
a band, let alone two, one of whom doubles as a fine flatpicker.

blues guitar are woven together with jazz piano to create a vintage

‘Peaches’, a four piece with a difference. Classics from the 50’s
through to the present day, performed with a twist that has to be

THE SWAMPDAWGS - A three-piece band based in Stoke-onTrent. Formed in mid 2007, the ‘Dawgs’ play a mixture of traditional
blues, together with some more modern numbers, plus the odd

Older, grumpier, but more full of blues than a special pack of
Smarties!.

THE HOPKINS / STOPES QUARTET - Is a hard driving ensemble,
featuring Jazz originals and standards, with Dave Hopkins fast
gaining a reputation for his ability to play two sax’s at once and
Ian Stopes with his amazing guitar technique, supported by Bass
and Drums.

BIG BLUE HOUSE - are no strangers to Nantwich Festival goers.
This three piece Rhythm & Blues outfit has been plying it’s trade
around the Blues circuit in various guises for the last 10 years or
so. Featuring; James Harrison guitar/vocals Al Dean bass/vocals
with Paul Turner on the kit. Special guest will be the ‘Man in Black’,
notorious local blues harp legend Mr Ade White.

THE MANATEES - (pronounced man at ease) could be a group of
large, lazy, freshwater aquatic mammals with halitosis and chronic
flatulence or five gents of mixed age and dubious parentage (well

Blues, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Rock’n’stuff this side of the Florida swamps.
When invited again this year, Manatees yawned, scratched, farted
and said “yeah, that’ll be cooool”

SLIDE BOY ROY - look to play the blues in there own style but with
influences of some of the best blues artistes around or have been
around. SBR play with good humour, no two gigs are the same with
their extensive take on the blues, RnB and roots RnR. Two guitars,
bass, drums, and harp make Slide Boy Roy kick bottom!
7pm - 9pm THE SHAKESPEARE
HOZZ - Playing classic and contemporary Blues and Blues rock,
this band are firm favourite’s on the North West gig circuit. Dave
Simons, one of the finest guitar players around and long time
drummer Mark Fowler seem to have been together for years.
Latest addition to the band is Pete Thompson on Bass/vocals, who
many will know from the Blues Missiles & the Madison Blues Band.
Expect tunes from Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughan via Cream & Dire
Straits from this great three piece.

FEEDBACK - Local favourites make a welcome return to the
Festival playing classic numbers from the dark ages to the present
day, a twelve piece band including two gorgeous ladies, backed
by a full brass section and rock band, with a liberal sprinkling of
humour. Not to be missed.

couple of short sets showcasing the undeniable talents of young

THE BORDERLINE BLUES BAND - Chris, John & Pete have been
working together in this outfit for four years, but all are experienced
bluesmen from a number of bands whose existence was in the
Welsh borderlands and in the London area. Taking as role models
artists such as Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore and Billy
Gibbons, they play mostly in pubs (mine’s a pint!) and in addition
to stealing other people’s songs they add a few of their own.

DIRTY RAY - Bluesman, singer, songwriter, poet. One time lead
singer with the Immaculate Fools, charmer of women and animals.

All of last years shows were sold out in advance!
To avoid disappointment please book early! We charge a booking
fee of £1.50 per ticket on all telephone, cash, credit card, postal
and online transactions. In the event of artist non-appearance for
whatever reason, no tickets will be refunded and a similar show
will be re-booked by the management.
No tickets are exchangeable.
