2012 Guest Artists
Our guest artists share their knowledge and experiences with our students
while visiting classes, conducting clinics, and performing concerts.
Guthrie Govan (Toronto – Session 1)
One of the biggest guitar sensations in recent years, Guthrie Govan played
his first gig at the age of five, appeared on UK national TV four years later,
and subsequently went on to win the 1993 “Guitarist of the Year” contest
sponsored by the leading UK magazine Guitarist. Guthrie has worked as
a transcriber for Guitar Techniques magazine since 1994. His debut solo
album Erotic Cakes was released in 2006. This eclectic collection of guitar
instrumentals was widely acclaimed - inspiring Joe Satriani to deliver the
verdict “freakin’ awesome!” He has recorded and toured extensively with acts
ranging all the way from melodic rock (Asia) to jazz fusion (The Fellowship)
and electronica (The Young Punx.) His instructional columns and online
videos make him widely regarded as one of the finest guitar instructors out
there. In 2011, Guitar Player magazine ran a cover story on Guthrie. He is
currently touring and recording with the new rock-fusion power trio, The Aristocrats.
Tommy Emmanuel (Toronto – Session 2)
Recognized as the elite of the elite and arguably the greatest living
acoustic guitar player, two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel
has mesmerized both fellow musicians and audiences alike with a
professional career that spans over four decades. He is known for his
distinctive “finger style” playing, using all ten fingers—a technique
he was inspired to try after hearing his hero, the legendary Chet
Atkins. Chet became a mentor to Tommy after they met in the ’80s.
Emmanuel’s technical precision, his virtuosic improvisations and his
unusually broad repertoire – which encompasses not only country and
bluegrass, but also pop, jazz, blues, gospel, even classical, flamenco, and
aboriginal styles – bespeak Chet Atkins’ legacy. Tommy’s versatility has
taken him from international Jazz Festivals to shows with the Sydney
Philharmonic, The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and the Closing
Ceremonies of the Sydney Olympic Games. Some of Tommy’s many awards and accolades
include ‘Best Acoustic Guitarist’ and the ‘Guitar Legend Award’ in Guitar Player magazine,
the ‘Players Choice Award’ in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, induction into the National
Thumbpickers’ Hall of Fame, and he was honoured with the Order of Australia. Guitar
players of all levels come to his shows to watch the magic hands of the ‘guitar Wizard of Oz,’
but his appeal goes far beyond musicians. His live shows are
known for their humour, passion, and infectious joy. Tommy
has garnered loyal fans worldwide.
Billy Sheehan (Vancouver Session)
Rising to cult status in the 80’s with his band Talas, Billy
was recruited by David Lee Roth in ‘85. He recorded two
platinum selling albums with the former Van Halen front man
before setting out on his own. Forming Mr. Big in 1989, the
band achieved a Billboard #1 single in the USA and 14 other
countries with “To Be With You” as well as 2 other Top 40
2
hits and worldwide platinum status. While developing his trademark style of playing he has
performed over 4000 live gigs on every continent except Africa and Antarctica. Voted the
“Best Rock Bass Player” 5 times in Guitar Player magazine Readers Poll, an honour which
placed him in their “Gallery of Greats” (alongside Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Geddy
Lee and Eddie Van Halen to name but a few), he has also won readers polls in many other
countries. Billy’s hand-prints and signature were preserved in cement on the Hollywood
Rockwalk, an honour attributed to those artists who have made a significant contribution to
Rock and Roll. In Japan, Billy has won the prestigious “Player Magazine” Readers Poll for
Best Bass Player an unprecedented 17 consecutive times! He has played alongside the likes
of Steve Vai, Dennis Chambers, Mike Portnoy, and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) to name a few.
2010 saw the recording of a new Mr. Big album “What If ” and the 8th Niacin album. The
Mr. Big album was released certified Gold in one week! In 2011, Billy received a Lifetime
Achievement award from Yamaha acknowledging Billy’s contribution to his art and 25 years
of working together with developing his signature Attitude Bass.
Ian Thornley (Toronto – Session 2)
Ian Thornley is a Canadian rock singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Born
and raised in Toronto, Thornley studied music at Boston’s Berklee College
of Music, where he formed his first band, BIG WRECK, in 1993. BIG
WRECK signed a US record deal with Atlantic Records and their 1997
debut album, In Loving Memory Of..., which hit Double Platinum and
included 3 massive singles with “The Oaf,” “Blown Wide Open,” and
“That Song.” Although the band split after their sophomore album The
Pleasure & The Greed in 2001, Ian continued making rock music under the
band THORNLEY with consecutive gold albums Come Again and Tiny
Pictures, which spawned the hit singles “Make Believe,” “Come Again,” and
“So Far So Good.” Ian recently reunited with former Big Wreck guitarist
Brian Doherty, and produced the third Big Wreck album, Albatross for
Anthem/Warner. The first single from this return to form currently holds the #1 Canadian spot
on rock radio for its title track “Albatross”. Ian is regarded as one of Canada’s finest guitar players
so don’t miss this opportunity to spend time with him at Guitar Workshop Plus!
Johnny Hiland (Toronto Session 1)
Johnny Hiland grew up in Maine and took to the guitar at a
young age. At eight, he joined his family’s band and at age ten,
Hiland won the Talent America contest. Johnny began as a
bluegrass player and besides guitar, also plays banjo, fiddle and
mandolin. In high school, his musical tastes extended beyond
bluegrass to play jazz, blues and the guitar rock of players like
Joe Satriani and Eddie Van Halen. Johnny moved to Nashville
in the early 90’s and was quickly noticed as one of the best
guitar players around. In a matter of a few short years, he
reached critical acclaim as one of the best in the world. He has
headlined the legendary Grand Ole Opry as a solo artist twice and performed on Prime
Time Country. Johnny signed with Steve Vai’s Favored Nations label as a solo artist and
The Johnny Hiland Band released two studio albums of original country and rock guitar
instrumentals. In 2011 Johnny signed with Mike Varney’s Shrapnel Records. Johnny also
became a busy studio session musician in Nashville playing on projects for artists like Toby
Keith, Trick Pony, Ricky Skaggs, Janie Fricke, Lynn Anderson, Randy Travis, and Hank
III. He also has performed on stage with artists such as Sammy Hagar, George Clinton
and P Funk, Steve Vai, Les Paul, and a host of other greats. Today, Johnny is known as one
of the top guitar players in the world.

general information
Seminars
Seminars are courses which concentrate on
specific topics and will sometimes feature
guest instructors. Generally, seminars are
designed for the intermediate to advanced
player although some may be open to all
levels. Students are evaluated to ensure
that they are at an appropriate level for
the course. Seminar students meet with
the instructor all day and, because there is
no restriction to class size, do not take part in rhythm section classes. Faculty led ensembles
for seminars depend upon class size and format.

uitar Workshop Plus is a program designed for aspiring musicians of all ages to

Rock Guitar Cross-Training (Toronto – Session 1)
with Jon Finn and special guest Guthrie Govan
So you’re learning your scales, chords, and theory, and your friends say
your chops are getting really good. But sometimes it still doesn’t exactly
come out the way you want. Come to this seminar prepared to work
hard and practice a lot, and your playing will be taken to new heights.
You’ll leave with enough material to practice for several years. Students
should have a reasonably solid working knowledge of scales, arpeggios
and chords. Reading music is helpful but not essential. Although this
course is designed primarily with rock players in mind, these concepts are built on solid
theoretical principles and can apply to any style of music. Topics covered include a new
look at pentatonics, rhythmic and thematic development, analysis of chord progressions,
modal improvisation, creative expression and much more. One of our most popular
instructors, Jon Finn, is uniquely qualified to teach this. He’s spent most of his professional
life divided equally between performing and teaching. His approach is heavily influenced
by his experiences working closely with masters such as Guthrie Govan, Steve Morse, John
Petrucci, Dave Larue, Carl Verheyen, John Williams, Tom Morello and many others.
Guitar phenom, Guthrie Govan will spend two days with students in this course.
Fingerstyle (Toronto – Session 2)
With Mike Bowell special guest Tommy Emmanuel
This course will focus on the classic fingerstyle method of playing
guitar made famous by the likes of Merle Travis, Chet Atkins,
Scotty Anderson and Tommy Emmanuel. This seminar will cover
the essential elements of this great style, including Travis-Picking,
walking bass lines, harp harmonics, and cascades. In addition,
through learning and playing many of the standard songs from the
Travis-Picking repertoire, topics like chord-melody, solo arranging,
voicings and substitutions, and improvising will be addressed. This
seminar class will enjoy a visit from one of the greatest guitarists in
the world, Tommy Emmanuel.
Rockin’ The Blues (Vancouver Session)
with Tim Porter and special guest David Grissom
This seminar is designed to focus on rock that wears it’s blues
influence on it’s sleeve. We’ll be looking at some guitar players
and bands that took what they learned from the original blues
artists, and forged a new style of rock. Using different tones and
rhythms, but always with a nod to the past, some of the most
memorable songs were created in this style. From the Allmans to
Zep, you can hear how the sounds of the Delta were transformed
into a powerful “new” sound that can still be heard influencing
bands and players today. An in depth look at how to use major
and minor pentatonic scales, the “blues” and “mixolydian”
scales, string bending, hammer-on and pull-off techniques, double stops, fresh chord ideas,
slide licks, wah-wah tricks and much more will be covered. So don’t miss out if you want
to learn how to make your guitar sing like the best of ‘em! This class will enjoy a visit from
the great Texas guitar slinger, David Grissom.
12
Red Hot Country Guitar (Toronto - Session 1)
with Michael Hawley and special guest Johnny Hiland
Not just for country players, this seminar teaches improvisational
concepts that apply to any style. Whether you are a jazz, rock or blues
player, this class will also give you the tools to take on any country gig
with confidence. Topics include hybrid pick-and-finger techniques,
chick’n pickin’, pedal-steel and open string licks, building single
note lines from chord forms, creating double stops, and mapping
the fretboard to effectively play through chord changes. Gain practical knowledge on how
to generate a great country tone, including effects & settings, signal chain, amps, pickups,
and guitars, as well as in-depth discussion of the styles of today’s masters such as Albert
Lee, Johnny Hiland, Ray Flacke, Danny Gatton, Pete Anderson and more. Plenty of inclass playing is utilized to reinforce the many new ideas and techniques this style demands.
Rather than ending up with just a collection of licks, several country ‘standards’ are used
as templates, allowing students to implement their ideas right away into songs. Michael
is an experienced player and clinician with over 25 years of experience. He has played
and worked with Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, Pat Martino, Will Ray, Toby Keith, Gary
Allan, and many others. The knowledge and passion for teaching Michael brings will make
