Students have been given small plastic
bottles which they can use
for refilling at the water
fountains. Any student
that did not receive a water bottle
last week please ask Mr. Hyde for
one. Students are to remember that
you can only fill the water bottle at
designated lunch breaks. You are not
allowed to go to the fountain between classes or during class time.
Howdy folks!
Why is the Principal cross-eyed?
Because he can’t control his pupils!!! Ha ha!
Have you ever wondered what it is that school is really all
about? Is it about controlling pupils? Is it more than just about education and learning for
the sake of learning?
Many people think school is more about making friends and having a good time before the
responsibility of adulthood kicks in. Some serious people think it’s about learning how to
handle hard work and relationships as preparation for the world of work? Others cynically
think that it’s simply about babysitting troublesome teens? I think school is all of these
things and more. What do you think?
How we see school, I personally believe, is mostly about us and how we choose to interpret the world around us. We can choose to see schools as places of unhappiness and difficulty or we can choose to see schools as places where happy memories and good experiences are formed.
Ask your parents about their schooldays! Did they have a difficult time at school when they
were young or do they look back at their schooldays fondly? I want all of my students to
look back on their time in Deerpark CBS with affection and warmth. I want my students to
think that they were genuinely appreciated and valued and treated with respect and justice at all times. So pupils; take control, smile and choose to be happy!
By the way, this isn’t a new idea by any means. A long time ago, a famous poet called John
Milton wrote a poem called Paradise Lost where he said “The mind is its own place, and in
itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven..” I think he had a good point…

Eight new
surveillance
cameras are
currently being installed around
the school. Cameras will be focusing on specific areas on each
of the 3 corridors. Mr. Barry and
Mr. Hyde will be monitoring
these cameras on a regular basis
therefore, students should remember to behave appropriately
along the corridors and to get to
class on time.
Dispatch Team:
The “Deerpark Dispatch” has gotten bigger and better this week.
This is partly due to the involvement of you the students! Thanks to
everyone who submitted articles on various topics throughout the
last week. A special thanks to the assistance of two students in particular; Piaris Mc Nealy and Adam Duggan, the newsletter has been slightly revamped! As
a result one poor, unfortunate teacher was even interrogated on Wednesday afternoon by
the above mentioned students. The purpose of the Dispatch is not only to keep students
update with what is happening in the school but is also meant to assist with your literacy.
Please take time to complete this weeks vocabulary and numeracy challenge. It is anticipated that the Dispatch will become multi lingual in the next few weeks. If you have any
suggestions for the newsletter or any articles please forward them on. If you are absent the
day the Dispatch is distributed you can log onto the schools website; www.deerparkcbs.ie
to read that edition. It is available under the “our school” tab.
Please send any articles to [email protected]. Come along to room 205 Wednesday @1pm to assist with the newsletter.

Well done to the LCA 1 and LCA 2
students who have brightened up
the walls of room 205 and 207
with their fantastic posters. The
subject topic of these posters is
about; positive attitudes and good
work ethics. Slogans relating to
the above topics
appear on each
poster. The students showed
great creativity
and design skills
by coming up
with the slogans
and the design themselves. A big
thank you to Mr. O’Mahony, Ms.
Naughton, Ms. Hamilton and Ms.
Tippins for their support and guidance during this task.
TY students, under the guidance of their Physics teacher; Mr.
Kerins are studying a module on programming. This module
runs in conjunction with their physics class. They are using a program called Scratch which is available on the internet and can be
downloaded for free. With the software programme we are currently making animations and games. It is a very easy program to
use and is designed to teach people how to program. So far, the
class has made a mini game. When we are
more familiar with the programme we aspire
to work on bigger projects. The programming
class will offer assistance to the Vex robotics
teams with the programming of their robot.

As of next Monday, all fruit
that is provided with the
lunches will be cancelled. If
students wish to continue to
receive fruit for their lunch
please log on to the
following website

indicate that you would like
to obtain fruit at small
break.

GUESS WHO
It was suggested that a student would conduct an interview with a member if staff on
a weekly basis. This person could be any one of the following; principal, vice principal,
teacher, SNA, caretaker, or DEIS staff member. If you think you have an inkling as to
who this weeks person is you should send you answer to the dispatch email or inform
Ms. Farrell. All members of staff should be on their guard!
Student: What is your favourite movie?
Teacher: The Last Samurai. Tom Cruise and Billy Connolly star in it.
Student: Do you have a favourite song?

(at this point the teacher burst into song)
Student: What do you watch on television?
Teacher: My favourite programme is “Two and a half men” but is has to be
the old version. I don't like the new one.

Sports Round Up
Under 18 football
Written By Ian O’ Sullivan
The U18’s were victorious in their Cork Colleges
Quarter-Final on Thursday 7th November where
they ran out winners on a scoreline of 3-8 to 1-7.
It was a mild sunny day in Bandon GAA where the
match took place; the conditions were ideal for an
afternoon of football. The match had a controversial beginning however, as the opposing team Rossa College played with the majority of the team
not wearing protective gumshields. The referee was
quick to realise this and did
not allow the game to continue until the problem was
solved almost twenty
minutes later. The game was
played with both teams having very high spirits and the
score remained very close throughout the first half
until a late goal from full-forward Conor Horgan
gave Deerpark the advantage going into half-time.
It was good to see the young Zack Walsh stepping
up to the plate in the first half, scoring two points
from the half back position. There was some debate as to whether our performance was good
enough.
We were aware of the threat that Rossa College
possessed. With the wind picking up in the second
half, our captain Timmy Walsh and one or two
others settled the nerves of the team with an inspirational speech. The opposition raised their
game after the interval with good counter attacks
that caught our defence off guard occasionally and
that eventually resulted in us conceding a goal; it
was now a two-point game. It was a tense second
half overall and Rossa College were looking the
better side. They won a penalty but it was taken
poorly with Cúl Baire Colin Long making an easy
save. Deerpark took over after that and saw the
game out with a great move from the impressive
midfield pairing of David Delea and Sean Ward.
The ball was fed to Shane O’Connell who left his
marker for dead and smacked the ball into the top
right hand corner of the net, scoring the first of
his two goals, which saw him getting Man of the
Match but take nothing from the entire panel, it
was a massive effort from everyone on the day so
let it continue on into the Semi-Final and best of
luck to everyone.
Keep it up Mr. O’Keefe you’re a super coach!
Under 16 Hurling
Submitted by Troy O’Sullivan
On Monday the 11th of November the Deerpark U16 hurling team put
up a great display to beat a very respectful Mayfield C.S. The match
took place in very tricky conditions at The Glen Rovers hurling club
on the north side of the city.
The game began with some impressive play from the Deerpark boys
as they soared into a six point lead. This was due to some good link
up play in the forward line between centre-forward Ryan Long and
corner forward Eoin Mulcahy. The Mayfield boys did not give up and
brought the match back to a one-point game before going in at halftime.
The northsiders came out with a fighting attitude after the break
and took the lead within five minutes. The Deepark side however did
not give up as a good pairing in mid-field of Troy O’ Sullivan and
Michael Barry fought hard and brought the game back level. A real
stand out performance also came from the centre back and captain
Zack Walsh who pushed the team on with inspiring words of encouragement. The captain also conveyed excellent
scoring skills. He had an amazing tally of 1-6 on the
day. The final scoreline read was 6-9 to 2-9 in favour
of Deerpark.
Best of luck to the U14 1/2 hurling
team that take on Bantry this Friday
T.Y Work Experience
TY1 started their work experience on the 12th of September and they have it every
Thursday until the 19th of December. I am currently doing my work experience in
Morning Star primary school. My role is that of a teacher assistant. I photocopy and
laminate material for the teachers. I also help the caretaker, making sure that the
outside of the school is clean and tidy. I went to school in Morning Star and the
principal was my 6th class teacher. It was difficult going back meeting all my teachers. The work experience has been a very enjoyable. I got to live the life of a teacher
for 3 months. I don't
envy teachers.
By Connor O’Herlihy
For my work experience, I am working in Cork Builders Providers. I will be
working there until the 19th of December. I start work at nine in the morning and finish at four in the afternoon. In the morning the first thing I do is
go to Damien’s office. Damien is the manager of the shop. He is not the
manager of the whole place. There is another person above him, his name
is Dan Twomey. I do a number of things there, I normally decompress any
cardboard or plastic that is around the place. I often do some stock taking
to see what products are running low. It is a very
exciting work environment and the people there are
very helpful.
