Did he go to school? That would depend on how you define “school”. As an artist who only could draw, David had a miraculous situation occur that can only be explained through Providence. As a result of this Providential occurrence, David was doing metal sculpture full time for the next 12 years, having never done sculpture previously. His career now spans over 18 years and nearly 9000 pieces of sculpture. While still teaching and working in her studio fairly regularly for short periods of time, she found she could assemble mosaics. Caldwell liked this medium because she could use bright color and combine disparate materials to make one-of-a-kind decorative objects. Now that she has larger blocks of time, Caldwell draws and paints more often and hopes to soon start making prints again. The paintings that she has made lately reflect events going on in her life: gardening, caring for an elderly relative, and other quotidian activities. Margaret states, “Almost everyone addresses the challenges of daily life by balancing attempts to satisfy needs with decisions about the worthwhile use of discretionary time. My goal is to use any gifts and energy that I have to make my world a bit better than I found it---while advancing my many interests. And, to finally focus on making of art objects.” 1105 S. 13th Ave., W., Newton, IA 50208 641.792.8781 Iowa artist, designer, and author Penny Christensen is an artist in love with the simple pleasures in life. Penny’s paintings are in all 50 states and eight foreign countries. She has received numerous awards, including, but not limited to, best of show and people’s choice. She has won the prestigious award for “Iowa Artist Of The Year” by Iowa Public Television and in a Midwest competition. Her paintings have been on display at galleries, art museums (including Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska and Morrell Hall in Lincoln, Nebraska), one woman shows, and other fine art institutions. She and her husband, Russell have been in various international shows held in the United States. One of those shows was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota where 175 artists were picked from around the world to show and sell their art work. Penny and her husband Russell have co-owned and operated Penny’s Visions Art Gallery in Neola, Iowa for the past 29 years. Their gallery shows paintings, poems and books by Penny and bronzes by Russ. The two met at the Iowa Sculpture Festival in 2011 where Jon was demonstrating offhand glass blowing for The Curiel/Reynolds School for Visual Arts. Mary was in attendance. Entranced by the demonstration and the glass, Mary immediately became a student at the CRVA where Jon began training her in Glassblowing and Lampworking. By the time the two returned to the Sculpture Festival a year later they were successfully working together with Mary as Jon’s assistant. Before the team’s third Sculpture Fest rolled around they had fallen in love and become a couple. Jon continued to educate Mary in the field of glass, however; her love for ceramic also added new elements to their work allowing them to mix medium for new effects. While getting ready for a summer of shows and demonstrations, they are also in the process of building a new studio in Geneva, IA which will allow them to produce more work as well as give classes to those interested in glass and ceramic. Jonathan and Mary are excited to be returning again to the show that started it all for them and hope to see the Iowa Sculpture Festival thriving for years to come. There is a softness and flow within the surface of the wood that creates a mood, evoking an inner spirit, a void that opens up to the realism of life, of acceptance. Flowing, slowly revealing what life has to offer, blending into our rightful place, conveying our inner beauty and love of life. My wife, Sue, has been performing same sex weddings these last few years, which has opened my eyes, as it has others, to the longing for two individuals to be as one. Too many individuals cannot accept change, do not understand, see the beauty, or feel the importance of the need to change and how equality can enlighten the viewer’s heart.” 29480 Hwy 69 North, Huxley, IA 50124 515.597.2505 [email protected] Phyllis Garner* Newton, IA “In 1972 a friend of mine, who had been a high school art teacher, assembled some stay at home moms to take art lessons. The first picture I painted won Second Place at the 1973 Nebraska State Fair, and another one won Honorable Mention! Later, I audited an art class at the University of Nebraska. In 1975, I went back to work to raise my four children and no longer had time to paint. It was not until my children were grown and I was living in Seattle that I once again picked up the paint brush. I am now retired and doing what I love, painting. As a result, I focus my efforts on people themselves. I use real, everyday individuals as my subjects in order to stay as true to my objective as I can, and execute my pieces with charcoal. I have always found there to be an emotive quality within the depth of black and white imagery that color can often stifle. This is why I choose to operate within the boundaries of the grey scale. Given that charcoal has the ability to bring out the entire spectrum of the grey scale, and adds a unique, grainy quality to the over all piece, I use charcoal as my preferred medium. With all this combined, I create pieces that attempt to tell both a story and generate a mystery with the intent of inciting a sense of curiosity and wonder in those who view my work. An impression is formed, and it becomes an imaginary work of art that must be created. For me, art is the sharing of impressions and emotions. Of course, life experiences affect what we assimilate. Growing up in rural Missouri taught me to be self-sufficient and gave me an affinity with animals. When I sculpt human beings, they tend to be hard working, independent individuals who have an appreciation for nature and animals. As an only child, a deep respect for animals evolved from my youthful imagination: they were my friends and playmates. In fact, it was my father’s workhorses that began my life-long love of sculpting. When I was three years old, I drew the horses on our living room wallpaper. Presently, I am studying human and animal anatomy, a life-long learning process, as well as teaching adult sculpting workshops. I hope to tackle the world of art, not just as one medium to another, but to become one of the greatest mixed-media artists the world will ever see. I have a lot of work ahead of me on this long journey, but what better way to start than to participate in my hometown’s art festival at my college? Kevin Korte Newton, IA “My inspiration to create art comes from the challenge of building something out of nothing. I enjoy looking at a piece of metal that may or may not have a predisposed purpose then visualize how it can be manipulated or formed into something entirely different. Transforming parts into a whole to create an element of design moves my passion for building art forward”. (You’ll find Kevin’s giant bugs outside around the DMACC campus.) The materials I choose depend on what I’m conveying. I like to tell a story that my viewers will understand. To me, art is about communication, so it’s my job as an artist to be as clear about my ideas as I can be. Art for me needs to be accessible and not an intimidating experience.” 515.423.3185 Jaci is originally from Grundy Center, Iowa. She and her husband, Steve, have two children — a daughter Amanda and a son Grant. They and their two dogs moved to Newton (Lambs Grove) over five years ago. Since then, Jaci has been expanding into new mediums besides pen and ink drawings. She is the creator of “Clarence” the Lion (from Herman Deaton and Nick Klepinger’s sculptural class) and “Gregory” the Giraffe, above. She is currently exploring watercolor and creating doll sculptures. 104 Highview Drive, Newton, IA 50208 319.269.0687 Newton, IA Newton, IA [email protected] [email protected] ART IS BIG in OUR COMMUNITY! Bronze artifacts have been found dating from 3000 BC. Although casting techniques have been refined over the centuries, the fundamentals of an old and venerable craft remain. This procedure is described below in extremely simplified terms to provide a general overview of the casting process. 4 When the MOTHER mold and FLEXIBLE mold have been carefully removed, a wax duplicate of the original remains. At this point, the founder or sculptor repairs any imperfections that may appear in the duplicate. 7 For support, the SHELL mold is embedded in sand and bronze is poured through the “gate” at a temperature of approximately 2000°F. 1 Artist submits original model sculpted in one of a variety of media: clay, wax, wood, stone, etc. A FLEXIBLE mold material is carefully applied over the entire surface of the model. 5 To the wax duplicate are added a wax cone called a “gate” and wax rods called “sprues”. Later, the “gate” and “sprues” provide cavities in the SHELL mold that will allow the pouring of molten bronze. 2 A plaster MOTHER mold is poured around the cured FLEXIBLE mold to insure stability in succeeding steps. When dry, the plaster MOTHER mold is removed in sections from the FLEXIBLE mold which is, in turn, removed from the model. At this point, the original model, which may have been damaged, is set aside and no longer used. 3 The FLEXIBLE mold is repositioned within the MOTHER mold. Molten wax is poured into a FLEXIBLE mold to produce a duplicate of the original model. From this point, the steps may be repeated as often as is necessary to produce multiple castings. 6 The sprued and gated duplicate is repeatedly dipped in a liquid ceramic slurry until a suitable thickness is built up around the wax producing the SHELL mold. When the SHELL mold is completely dry and hard, the wax duplicate is MELTED OUT. The SHELL mold is now ready to receive the molten bronze. 8 When the metal is cool, the ceramic SHELL mold is carefully chipped away with a mallet. A bronze cast remains, still with the “gate” and “sprues” connected to it. 9 The “gate” and “sprues” are removed, and the cast is cleaned and closely inspected for flaws. If the cast is perfect, it is then chemically treated to produce the patina or color of the finished sculpture. iowasculpturefestival.org 23 iowasculpturefestival.org 19 MAP of EXHIBITORS & DMACC CAMPUS Artist parking Iowa Sculpture Festival June 13-14, 2015 W 4th Street N W 8th Street N Campus Map Public parking N 2 Ave W nd Family Art Time Tent Festival entrance Live Music -Saturday Only First Floor Registration & Cashier Silent Auction 1 2 Artist Booths Steps Up (More Artists on 2nd Floor) Entry 20 Iowa Sculpture Festival 2015 * First-time Festival participant 3 hs Second Floor 27 28 29 30 31 22 23 24 25 26 17 18 19 20 21 Restrooms Artist Booths Food Vendors 12 13 14 15 16 3 4 THRIVENT Make & Take Art Live Music -Sunday Only 5 6 (More Artists on 1st Floor) 7 8 9 10 11 Steps down Demonstrators & Emerging Artists Seminars Rms 112 & 113 iowasculpturefestival.org 21 Newton, Iowa The Iowa Sculpture Festival, Centre for Arts and Artists, Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce, ReNew Newton, individuals and businesses with the encouragement and collaboration of the City of Newton, Iowa have joined to establish the “First Avenue of Sculpture and Art” program with the intent to educate, excite, and entertain the citizens and visitors of Newton, Iowa.
