Clark Korb, Skip Kanester, Ed Maupin and
Shari Grayson, I don’t know where I would
be today! They have all been instrumental
in shaping the person that I have become
both personally and professionally and I’m
eternally grateful. Coming to IPSB has really

It’s been an amazing journey that I never
expected but for which I feel incredibly
grateful. It seems like every day I will hear a
piece of research or a person talking about
a new development in the health world
and I am brought back to knowledge of the
mind-body connection that we learned at
IPSB. There are so many exciting things
that we are exposed to at IPSB that the
world is slowly starting to catch up with: A
lot of it having to do with how the way we
think affects our lives, the connection with
our minds and how our emotions manifest
in our bodies, and tons of other things
I currently own a Holistic Medical Clinic
called Preventative Holistic Medicine where
I practice TuiNa and Structural Integration.
I’m also a licensed Functional Medicine
Practitioner and Business Development
Coach. I’m able to help people with their
nutrition, get the tests they need to get
answers to their health concerns, as well
as helping them break through blocks in
their businesses. It’s a huge honor to be
able to work with people and help them
make a difference in their lives, their health
and their futures. I’m grateful to be
able to set my own schedule, work from
home when I want to and to be making a
difference. The most rewarding part of
my work is having developed relationships
with incredible people who have changed
my life and helped me just as much as I’ve
helped them. My advice for young grads is
to GO AFTER YOUR DREAMS. No one
is going to make your goals and dreams
happen for you. You need a detailed
plan and a healthy dose of consistency,
boldness and perseverance in order to be
successful. You need a “no-quit” attitude
and to learn what it means to hustle when
you’re starting and to consistently build
and grow your practice and your life goals.
Do WHATEVER it takes to stay motivated
to move forward. I’m so excited to share
some of the tips and skills that I’ve learned
over the years in the process of building,
scaling and selling businesses in my new
book. It’s called Amplified Ambition and it
will be out on Amazon near the end of June,
2015. I hope to be able to inspire folks to
take action on the lives they were designed
for and to create more income and more
impact. Thank you to all of the IPSB staff
and educators who have forged the path to
healthier and more fulfilled lives!

WELCOME Leighann Ramaekers
Leighann Ramaekers has joined the
IPSB team as our new Admissions Guide.
Leighann is originally from Austin, Texas,
although she grew up in Ohio. She
moved to the San Diego Area in 2008
and has enjoyed making this her home.
Leighann began her career as an Admissions Counselor at Ashford University.
Her hard work and successful student
relationships led to her advancement as
a Lead Counselor and University Ambassador. After several years, she decided
to leave the corporate environment,
trading in her pants suit for yoga pants.
Getting to know Leighann: "Outside of
work, I enjoy spending time in nature
with my daughter, Chloe, and fiancé.
We live around Lake Murray, so we often
spend time walking around there. My
favorite outdoor spot is Sunset Cliffs in
Ocean Beach, we take our dog, Cyder,
there often. We lived there for a few
years; but moved inland, still my heart
belongs to OB. We also go camping a
lot and enjoy looking at the stars. I make
natural stone jewelry with some of my
friends, and love any yoga, but Bikram. I
play the violin and clarinet. My favorite
color is blue... "

HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES
Summer Registration Opens Wednesday May 27th, 2015
SOMATIC DIALOGUE
New Registration Deadline: Program students must register for
classes by June 19th, After this date it is considered LATE and
will be subject to a $25 late fee. Please register early to avoid
this.
Step 1 – Filling out a Course Registration
A. Program Students - To register for classes go to http://ipsb.edu/current-students/registration-records and download a Course Registration form. Students
following the IPSB recommended program sequencing can submit Prefilled
Course Registration forms available in the IPSB’s Administrative Services office
and online at http://ipsb.edu/current-students/registration-records.
B. Non-Degree Students (NDS) - To register for a class as a Non-Degree seeking student you must contact the Admissions Department if you have never attended classes at IPSB before. If you are a returning NDS Student please contact
the Registrar to set up an appointment to process your enrollment. NDS Enrollments are not eligible for financial aid.
C. Extension/Workshop Courses To register for extension courses, go to http://
ipsb.edu/current-students/registration-records, call 858-505-1100, or come by
Administrative Services before the course’s registration deadline.
Step 2 – Submitting your Course Registration
Registration forms can be submitted in person or via mail to:

submit via email to: [email protected]. Please note: Submitting a Course Registration form does not mean you are now enrolled in classes. Course Registration
must be approved by the Registrar, prior to setting up payment arrangements for

Step 3 – Paying for your Classes
Once your Registration is approved you will be contacted by Finance/Financial
Aid to confirm payment arrangements. You can also email financeadmin@ipsb.
edu to set up your payment arrangements. Tuition and fees must be paid or have
a payment plan set up no later than, June 27, 2015.
Step 4 – Receiving your Class Schedule
Once Step 3 is completed your registration form will be processed and you will
receive a “15 Summer Registration Completed” email with your Class Schedule
attached. Please review your schedule and don't forget to pick up any handouts
for your classes.
Helpful Information
Buying your Textbooks – Required books can be found on your class schedule,
the IPSB booklist (available online at http://ipsb.edu/downloads/Booklist.pdf), and
the Quarterly Schedule. Some books may be purchased in person in the Administrative Office. Many books must be purchased on-line, please plan time for
shipping to assure you have all required text prior to your class start date, many
classes require pre-reading before the 1st day.

Course Description: Applied Studies is the lab portion
of Anatomy for Body Therapists. The lab portion gives
direct experience of the musculoskeletal structures presented in the lecture. The anatomy lab specifically addresses the tactile and kinesthetic learning style through
palpation and modeling muscles in clay. Students learn
to shape and correctly place muscles
on the manikin skeleton, and they embody this knowledge through movement and palpation on themselves
and partners.

Course Description: This lecture course on anatomy,
combined with the Applied Studies, or lab portion of
the course, provides a comprehensive experinece of
learning musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology
for body therapists. All three learning styles are addressed with emphasis on the tactile/kinesthetic style
through palpation exercises, drawing and modeling
in clay. Topics covered include body orientation and
movement vocabulary, connective tissue, bone tissue,
joints, muscle tissue, leverage, gait, the neuromuscular system, proprioception, and the health and
pathology of these tissues, functions and structures.
Students will be able to apply this information to
personal health, client health, massage therapy applications, bodywork experience and body mechanics.

Course Description: Asian Healing Arts I is an introduction to the Asian modalities offered at IPSB: seitai
shiatsu, tui na, traditional Thai massage and Jin Shin
Acutouch. The emphasis of this class is to provide
a broad range of hands-on experience to these
ancient healing styles as well as give an overview of
foundational theories common to traditional Chinese
medicine (TCM). Students will be introduced to yinyang polarity, five-element correspondences and the
difference between Western and Asian paradigms of
wellness. Students will learn to
• practice basic assessment of clients using the four
pillars of examination;
• identify indications and contraindications specific
to Asian body therapy;
• demonstrate beginning hands-on competency using Asian body therapy techniques for the arms, legs,
neck, back, abdomen and central channel; and
• explore additional tools for self-care and client
recommendation resources.

Course Description: Circulatory Massage applications
focuses on expanding the student’s skills in the application of Swedish Massage techniques, while cultivating
the ability to design a session based on client needs/
requests and to communicate effectively. This course
builds upon the recipe from the Essentials of Massage &
Bodywork course and adds more techniques to address
specific client issues and enhance the therapeutic
value of the work. Appropriate body mechanics are
emphasized for application of techniques, quality of
touch/connection and injury prevention and longevity. In
preparation for work in IPSB's Massage Therapy Clinic
(MTC), other areas covered in the course include focus
on the components of a session and communication
skills as well as elegant draping for client safety and
comfort and boundary issues.

Clinical Applications Preparation
This course is held at our Massage Therapy Clinic
located at the Landmark Center:
Course Description: This course prepares the student
for working as a student practitioner in IPSB's Massage
Therapy Clinic (MTC). Students should take this course
just prior to the quarter they register for the Clinical
Applications Experience course. Students will learn to
adapt their body mechanics for combining modalities
into a single session customized to meet client needs.
They will practice effective intake and session closure
skills for client satisfaction and retention. Students will
learn to properly chart session notes. Students will
receive an orientation to the MTC facility and learn
strategies for working successfully in a professional
setting as well as practices for maintaining self-care.

Course Description: This course provides the student
with real-world work experience in a supportive environment. Students will be scheduled for clinic shifts at
IPSB's Massage Therapy Clinic (MTC), enabling them
to practice the skills learned in the classroom on the
general public in a professional setting. Each shift the
student will have the opportunity to work with three
clients in a row, practicing time management, effective
session design, effective application of bodywork
skills, communication skills, charting and endurance.
Each shift will include written feedback by both the
client and the student on their sessions as well as an
instructor/supervisor-led wisdom circle in which to
share learning outcomes, challenges and strategies for
improvement. Students will receive an orientation to

Course Description: This course is the foundation for
learning at IPSB, whether for professional training or
personal growth and spiritual development. Students
gain an understanding of their own "bodymind" through
reflection and mindfulness about how it moves and
how it is affected by touching others and being touched.
The course is designed to establish a basic grounding
in three distinct styles of massage: circulatory massage
(Swedish), deep tissue sculpting and sensory repatterning. Students will also receive a core of skills and knowledge of basic massage practices through experiential
learning, including breath, movement, body mechanics,
anatomy, somatic psychology and ethics. This course
is the beginning class for all of IPSB's programs and the
foundation for the school's philosophical approach to

includes the history, equipment and physiological
principles involved in the practice of hydrotherapy

salt glow scrub, dry skin brushing, castor oil packs,

founding principles of structural integration as originally
developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Working with the fascial
system using touch, movement and awareness, students

learn conceptually and experientially about balanced,
integrated function. Students will begin learning how to
visually assess body structure in order to select hands-on

Course Description: This course continues to develop
the creative methods for moving the physical body
introduced in the Essentials of Massage & Bodywork
course. The movement methods engender embodied
states of grace and ease which, in turn, elicit positive
tissue response. Through lectures, demonstrations,
movement and modeling techniques, students will
cultivate vision/intention, receptivity, rhythm and
mindful touch. Students will continue developing
in their body mechanics skills while applying new
techniques. This class is multi-faceted in how it
encourages self-development and awareness of the
importance of pacing, sensitivity and flow in this

introduction to sports massage. Techniques that will
be covered include positional release, broad cross
fiber, deep transverse friction and propioceptive

session for use during training between events. Proper
communication and critical thinking skills to work with
the client athlete will also be emphasized through
lectures, demos and handouts provided. Basic anatomy

Course Description: Practice sessions are offered for
students to increase their hands-on experience in
a supervised setting. Students practice techniques
learned in their massage training and learn to give and
receive appropriate feedback. Each session begins
with movement exercises related to massage (e.g.,
taijiquan or qigong) before students pair-up and take
turns giving and receiving massage. Students must
attend a minimum of five class sessions. Student’s
skills will be reinforced, clarified, and expanded under
the supervision of IPSB faculty members. The sessions
end with feedback and integration dialogue with all in
attendance. Students receive only a pass/fail grade for
this course. Students need to attend their first session
within two weeks of the start date for the quarter. If
not, they will be dropped and charged a drop fee.

will arrange a volunteer experience providing massage
and bodywork to a non-profit organization. The purpose
is to give students an opportunity to develop professional
skills in promotion while providing a service to those who

Students contact organizations, prepare and present their
proposal for approval by the both the organization and
faculty coordinator. They perform a minimum of 30 massage hours under the guidance of an on-site supervisor.
Students also share thier learning experiences with the
group, including the promotional presentation they used
to secure their volunteer position.

body/mind awareness; through meditation, chanting,

Course Description: This course brings together the skills
learned throughout the bodyworker's training to study
the effectiveness of their bodywork modality for treating
a particular client condition. In this course, students
learn to do basic research and write a case report. The
report documents the entire research process from the
initial interview and client profile, through the treatment
plan, assessment of outcomes, report of client sessions,
report of data and conclusions. The report also includes
a literature review relevant to the bodywork modality
used and to the client's presenting conditions. Five client
sessions are conducted under supervision, accompanied
by 20 hours of instruction on how to organize and write
the case report.

ability to rest in stillness, and relational and perceptual
skills are the heart of course work. Interpersonal
relational skills are introduced in CST I, as are concepts
of the nature of being and self. Within this context,
students learn to enter a neutral “being” state from
which to meet and relate to the client’s system, and
from which to establish a safe and empathetic listening
field. Skills of negotiation of contact and of palpation
are introduced. The enhancement of both practitioner
and client resources is also explored. Practical skills
around accessing felt-resources are explored in this
context. The importance and skill of maintaining a wide
perceptual field is introduced and the perception of
primary respiration and its various tidal manifestations
is also introduced. Within this context, a perceptual
awareness of the fluid tide is initially emphasized. The
role of stillness within the work is also introduced as
a fundamental concept, perception and skill within
Craniosacral Biodynamics.

Course Description: This is an experiential course designed to explore the dynamic relationship between
bodyworker and client in addition to expanding
understanding around the therapeutic process. It
introduces the student to Relational Somatics, which
holds that the relationship itself is a healing tool, and
with proper reflection can be used to help our clients
achieve their goals. The position of ‘healer/guide’ is
explored to enhance attention and hone perceptive
skills. The learning in this class requires an embodiment of concepts and a commitment to honoring the
relational field that enhances the intimacy, safety and
sacred space of the circle. Through focusing on opening the ring of the heart, we will work on issues including: setting and holding appropriate boundaries, dual
and multiple relationships, parallel processes, dealing
with emotions in the context of bodywork, the effects
of trauma and PTSD, and working with allied health
professionals. Hands-on work on the connective tissue
matrix (fascial stretching, deep tissue work, ‘shakeshake’), tracking/following sensation, and authentic
movement will support and enhance our discovery.
Students can expect a combination of the following:
lecture, demonstration, supervised partnered work,
group discussions, experiential exercises, meditation,
breath, movement, lecture, and time for check-in

Course Description: Based on the skills and principles
presented in Neuromuscular Therapy - Introduction,
this course focuses on dysfunctional patterns of the
cervical spine and temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Students will learn to assess postural distortions of
the neck and jaw, and they will learn strategies and
techniques to address these distortions and common
pain problems in this area. Topics include whiplash, facial
pain and temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

Active Stimulus Rebound Therapy (ASRT) is a
stimulating hands-on therapy that revives and
activates muscular function by stimulating the
nervous system. The ASRT modality best complements structural integration modalities and
somato-emotional work. In this workshop, we
will review required anatomy and physiology,
learn specific ASRT principles and techniques
for improving standing and sitting balance, and
practice applying these techniques appropriately.
Charlene Penner received her medical
degree from the University of Saskatchewan in
1976. Since then, she has studied and practiced
many forms of energetic movement and handson body therapy, including pyschophysical
integration, which she studied under Dr. Milton
Trager in the 1980s. In the two decades since
Trager's passing, she has respectfully named her
work in the area Active Stimulus Rebound Therapy (ASRT). She brings years of exploring “health
as a total living concept” to IPSB as an instructor
of Anatomy and Physiology & Pathology.
Cost: $89 per person
Level 1 Basic Training (2 hrs) is a general workshop for anyone interested in learning more about
the fundamentals of Kinesio Tape. Level 1 uses Kinesio Pre-Cuts. You will learn 5 of the following
Kinesio Pre-Cut applications:
• Neck , knee, foot, outer/inner elbow, lower back, shoulder, wrist, ankle
Angela Kies is a Certified Kinesio Tape Practitioner (CKTP), Holistic Health Practitioner, NCBTMB
Board Certified Massage Therapist, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and the Treatment Supervisor
at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa.

This permit does not guarantee you a space; parking is on a first-come, first-serve basis and additional parking is available on Ponderosa Ave. Please arrive early for your classes to ensure you have
enough time to park and arrive in class on time. If you prefer to park on Ponderosa Ave. each time
you visit IPSB, you do not need a permit. Students are not allowed to park in the IPSB visitor space.

Course Description:
Many massage therapists would like to include
effective stretches in their client sessions but
feel they don’t have the training or expertise
to perform the stretches correctly. Facilitated
Stretching is a safe, simple, yet dramatically
effective stretching technique that can be
used with a wide variety of clients to regain
or improve flexibility. It’s easy to learn and
to incorporate into your current massage
practice.
Facilitated stretching is based on the principles
of PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular
facilitation) and consists of three simple steps:
stretch the muscle, contract it isometrically
against resistance, then stretch it again. These
steps apply whether you’re isolating one
muscle at a time, or using the spiral diagonal
patterns of PNF to stretch groups of muscles
simultaneously.
Facilitated stretching, combined with soft
tissue work, will enable the practitioner
to obtain greater overall success in client
treatment sessions. Additionally, a program of
self-stretching using these techniques can be
invaluable for clients in their home stretching
programs.

Bob McAtee, LMT, CSCS, C-PT has been a
massage therapist since 1981 (IPSB-trained),
specializing in sports massage and soft tissue

principles of conscious touch and application through massage techniques for the
back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, hands

program is endorsed by the American Holistic
