Lego Club Success
Irabina’s second intensive school holiday
Lego Club was a great success. One
parent reported that she has seen her
son negotiating better with his brother
and seeking out more interaction with
peers on a play date. Jax “would like to
do Lego Club again for eighty years”
and Michael “can’t think of a way to
make Lego Club better because it’s
already so much fun”.

achieved the highest possible accolades
within their chosen careers.
Welcome to our first newsletter of
2015. What an incredible year we have
planned for Families here at Irabina.
One of the exciting things coming will
be a day featuring the world renowned
and truly inspirational speaker Professor
Temple Grandin. Temple will present to
you on “Autism and My Sensory Based
World”.
Temple Grandin is an incredible
reminder of how much can be achieved
by people with Autism. With intervention
Dedicated families, Mums, Dads,
Brothers and Sisters all play their part
in supporting and encouraging people
with Autism to achieve what is possible
for them. I think that is something truly
worth remembering, just like meeting
one person with Autism is “meeting one
person with Autism”. The same needs to
be said for achievements.
We see children who are able to make
small changes in communication and
ability. Each of these are remarkable
achievements in themselves. No matter
if they are small or they are big, they are
still wonderful achievements.
We know that the benefits of Early
Intervention can have a profound
effect on a child with Autism. At Irabina
our figures show that with our early
intervention programs 80-90% of our
children will be able to attend Main
Stream Schools as opposed to 40%
without.
This can then lead to long term
opportunities that enable 60% of our
children to be more likely to hold a
long term job and contribute in a very
positive way to our community.
Even though the term is young, we are
already seeing amazing results with
children involved in our programs.
This year will make an amazing
difference in our children’s lives. I look
forward to sharing their journey with
you.

Oscars100 have a special connection
to Irabina Autism Services. They are a

Oscars100 have held a number of
successful events that have certainly
raised more awareness of autism. It’s no
wonder they have jumped on board with
the Irabina Superhero Fun Run 2015. Not
only do they support Irabina events but
they have donated close to $15,000 to
Irabina Autism Services. This is a huge

School Holiday Lego Club
Continued from Front Page.
These holidays we ran two groups.
Eight children aged 5 and 6 years
attended in the morning and 6 children
between 6 and 9 attended in the
afternoon. Children worked together in
assigned roles to build Lego sets while
therapists focussed on supporting their
communication and social interaction
with each other. For many children it
is challenging to work with others on
a specific goal rather than building by
themselves and following their own
ideas.

social skills. As Term 1, is shorter and
many changes are happening for our
staff and many families, our focus will be
on meeting with individual families and
children to work out the type of program
and goals that would be best suited to
them.
We want to offer the best possible
group based services from Term 2
onwards.

This challenge gives many opportunities
to teach children about social concepts
like having a group plan, listening with
their whole body, keeping their body in
the group, and using their eyes to show
their thoughts. When taking on the role
of “engineer” and giving instructions
to other group members, children can
work on using specific vocabulary, giving
directions in a logical sequence and
other descriptive skills. Taking turns,

New Irabina Intensive Program
The new Irabina Intensive Intervention
Program, has started with 14 children
aged 2 – 4 years.
Recent high quality research shows
that intensive small group programs
work!
This program is based on world’s
best practice for Early Intervention for
children with autism – get them while
they are young, provide intensive
intervention, and provide parents with
the support they need to maximise their
child’s potential. (Granpeesheh et al,
2009; Odom et al, 2014; Petters-Sheffer
et al, 2012; Korzillus & Matson, 2012;
Rogers, 2013, and Vivanti et al, 2014).
- The program is staffed by special
education teachers, education
assistants, and allied health staff
(Speech, OT, and Psychology) and
overseen by ESDM certified staff. All
staff are experts in the field of autism
and early intervention.
- Parent education and support is
incorporated into the program.
- Up to 10 children and 4 staff per
