A NOTE FROM MARK AND LAURA
Bring on the Spring….. (and Summer)
WOW!!! This winter, by all accounts, was one of the
harshest, longest and coldest on recent record. We
have all weathered through frigid days and plenty
of snow – we are certainly wishing spring, and of
course the summer to get here as soon as possible.
We are so excited to start of our 15th summer after
this winter. It is so hard to believe camp is less
than 100 days away before we will all be together
again in the place that we all love so much.
This time of the year is marked with so many
feelings and so much to do in order to get prepared
for another summer. We have just returned from
our annual camp conference in Atlantic City. The
Tri-State Camp Conference is the largest gathering
of camp professionals in the world. It is so amazing
to spend time with so many people who love camp
as much as we do. The energy and enthusiasm is
amazing for the three days we spend together.
One of the highlights for us is how it reinforces
what we do and the importance of camp in so
many peoples lives. Most importantly, the thing
we walk away from is this unbelievable feeling
of how lucky we are to be doing this year after
year. We get a chance to help develop children,
mentor staff and partner
with parents - no other
profession has such an
incredible opportunity we are so overwhelmed
by this when we stop
and think over the last
14 years how many
lives we have been
a part of in such a
positive way. We can’t wait to do it all again in
2015 - our 15th season at Iroquois Springs.
In a few short weeks we will start the official
beginning of the summer with the move up to Rock
Hill followed by our new family orientation – this
year we have so many new families to welcome
into the IS family, we cannot wait! The best part
of getting up to camp so early is watching how
camp comes alive again for another summer – not
just the grass growing, or the trees coming into
blossom, but seeing new staff arrive on almost a
daily basis, and getting camp ultimately prepared
for June 27th!
We also wanted to take this opportunity to thank
so many of you who have helped spread the word
about Iroquois Springs - we have had a wonderful
year, with most groups filled. We have also been
able to spread the word in many new places from
as far as California, and around the world. Thanks
for all the terrific support.
Since the countdown has officially begun, we need
to get back to work getting ready for summer
2015. We really cannot wait to see everyone and
get the summer
off to a great
start. Here’s to
counting down
to June 27th!
See you there.
GIRLS SIDE GAB With Rosie
Hello Girls Side!!!
Last newsletter before we are up at camp!!! WOOHOO I cannot wait. Today was the warmest day we have had
in a really long time and that got me really excited for
this upcoming summer. I even started my camp pile
:) - I know you know what I am talking about :)
BOYS SIDE STUFF
WITH
JOSH
Could it be? I think it is. Is it finally over? I think we
are in the clear. Winter is gone and spring is here --YES! No more snow storms, hats, gloves and scarves.
I can actually think warm thoughts and not have to run
from my car into a store because it is so cold out--this is awesome! I can almost hear the sounds of Boys
Side heading to line-up or feel the splashes from kids
jumping in the pool. Spring is great but it only gets me
excited for summer. We are only several weeks away
from Memorial Day and that only means that duffel
bags are going to start getting filled, shirts and shorts
are going to have new name labels put on them and
that Iroquois Springs is ready for its 15th summer.
Spring is one of the most exciting times of the year
for our returning campers but especially our 1st time
campers too. I am looking forward to kicking off our
summer at the New Family Orientation. I know that
everyone has officially started their own countdown
to camp. We have even heard that some campers start
off each day by putting another “X” on a countdown
calendar. There are only about 75 more X’s to put on
the calendar until we will begin the summer of our
lives. I am looking forward to the buses rolling in and
seeing all of the faces from previous summers while
also watching our new campers experience Iroquois
Springs for the first time. Before we know it Boys Side
will be woken by the sounds of reveille and line-up.
The basketball courts will be jammed with campers
and the cabin porches will be filled with the sounds of
campers talking and laughing while enjoying the best
days of their lives.
As the school year winds down I know that the
anticipation for the summer of 2015 is growing. As we
look forward to what will be another great summer,
I hope that the next few months will go quickly and
that we are all at the opening night campfires enjoying
our friends and delicious s’mores together. I am so
eager to get back that camp feeling that we have been
missing all winter. There is nothing like spending the
summer with your best friends.
See you soon! Josh
We have spent the last couple of months meeting
and planning for camp. However, it just seemed so
far away - now we are getting closer and I am getting
excited. I am excited to be with you again. I am
excited for line-up, campfires, trips, evening activities,
DJ Yahney and more. I am excited to see your faces
all day and then every night before you go to bed. I
am excited for smiles, laughter, singing, cheering and
MORE. I am excited to see you on the field, in the pool,
at Hobbyville, in the lake and MORE. I am excited to
see you get off the bus on day one, tribals, color war
and MORE. I am excited to see you grow up a little,
be nice to each other and learn from one another and
MORE!!!!!! I get excited just thinking about all of our
new campers starting this summer and joining our
family. I am looking forward to seeing you at New
Family Orientation. I am excited to see all of our
returners come back to camp and spread their love for
camp with all of us. I am excited to see our returning
staff and meet the new “difference makers” that will
be joining us. I AM JUST SO EXCITED…..I BET YOU
ARE TOO!
Last summer, I spoke a lot about traditions on girls
side - I cannot wait to continue them. I cannot wait
to hear girls side song (ladies start writing), I cannot
wait for our new rest hour activities, our big/little
events, our girls side sing and our divisional activities
that have now turned into TRADITIONS, and we can
not forget GIRLS ON THE RUN.
Ladies - camp is so close, yet we still have time left
for studying and being nice - Just a reminder - It is
much easier to be nice to each other then to be
mean. We treat others the way we want to be treated.
On girls side we do not tolerate any bullying, leaving
out, or "mean girl stuff". Just a reminder - GIRLS SIDE
is a special place and what makes it special is that
we are made up of NICE, caring, empathetic girls. You
make me proud both at camp and outside of camp KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. Continue doing the right
thing!!!
Let the count down begin---See you in just a few
weeks.
With love,
Rosie
THE WINTER ARROW CLUE
We are still looking for the correct answer, so here we go
again!
In each issue of the Iroquois Springs Times we will
present a new clue to the “Winter Arrow’s” location. Unlike
in Color Week, the “Winter Arrow” can be ANYWHERE in
Camp – indoors or outdoors, areas both in bounds and
off limits. Use your creativity and imagination…you can
even search without a counselor!!!
The first Girls Side and Boys Side campers to correctly
name the exact location of the “Winter Arrow” will win
a prize for their bunk next summer. Remember to give a
detailed description of why you think the “Winter Arrow”
is there when you respond.
Send your answers to:
[email protected] and make
sure to include your first and last name in
the email.
Here is Clue #1:
Once upon a time. Yet Again.
Cadence and Cascade walk to the rhythm of a
song all their own
After 45 pirouettes of the tick and the tock, they
arrived back where they started from
Home, a drink, they see their reflection. Peace for a while.
They have found their city of gold that lies in the deep
distance of each of our heart’s desires.
Here is Clue #2:
And Cadence and Cascade walk again amongst the season
of the children. There is a magic to their laughter and
their happiness in this wonderful land that even a journey
through the ghost woods couldn’t make fade away.
Cascade worried that too much laughter may leave those
beautiful young voices ragged and frayed, but it never
seemed to matter. And their song remained the same.
Home again. A drink, they see their reflection. Peace for
a while.
Somewhere, not far away, a Tori Amos album was playing.
If you listen closely, maybe you can recognize music from
“Scarlet’s Walk”, or maybe the sounds of “Unrepentant
Geraldines”…..
Here is Clue #3:
It was a winter that many would like to forget in Rock Hill as
temperatures remained at 0 or below for extended periods
of time and the snow seemed to pile-up once January came
around, but that did not stop us! Our planned kitchen and
dining room renovation stayed on schedule and neither
snow, rain, cold, sleet or wet conditions stopped the crew
who knew how important it was to be ready for summer! It was
amazing to see the progress of these hard working individuals day
in and day out as our plan came to reality….wow, what a difference
this is going to make!
Last newsletter we told you
about the new jet-ski we
purchased, but now we have
more exciting news to share.
We have taken yet another
leap forward and have also
purchased a brand new
ski boat to enjoy as part of our offsite Swinging Bridge ski program. Whether you’re water-skiing,
wakeboarding, knee boarding or just enjoying the ride, this boat
is sure to impress even the toughest critics – we can’t wait for you
to see it! Of course, an addition to our popular Aqua-Playground
is in store as well. We know the lake and water-ski program will
continue to be popular choices amongst all of our campers!
As you know, we take great pride in our facility and our program,
and we know that these new additions are going to really be a
welcomed change for our campers!
And so on this hot summer day, a few moments of rest.
Cadence and Cascade take a long cool drink and dream.
They are Secretariat and Sham, or Affirmed and Alydar.
Rivals for the silver cup. A group of happy campers await
and another journey begins......

March Madness surely did
not disappoint this year and
we truly hope many of you enjoyed our
2nd annual Iroquois Springs camper and
staff bracket competition. We are thrilled
to let you know that Gabe Sender won the

Cream with his whole bunk this summer.
Kenton Armbruster came out on top of the

Towel Service
We hope by now you have heard the great news that
Iroquois Springs will continue to offer TOWEL SERVICE
at the pool and lake this summer. There is absolutely
no need to pack more than 6 towels this summer for
your camper to use in the bunk for showers, in fact, we
will ask that campers DO NOT bring any towels to the
pool or lake and instead receive a camp towel once they
arrive at each location. Don’t worry, we promise these
are quality towels that absorb plenty of water, just ask
all of our campers from last summer, they loved it!
Of course, if you would like to bring an extra “cover-up”
or “bathing-suit wrap” to camp to wear from your cabin
to the pool or lake, we certainly encourage you to do so.
We know that many campers like to “wear” their towels
to the pool or lake around themselves as they walk to
these activity areas.
We hope you find our
towel service a real help
as you pack for camp
and find great value
in the service we will
provide for our entire
camp community.
Computer
Recycling
Have an old computer sitting in your
basement that you would like to discard
of…put it to good use and donate it to camp this summer! Our
“You Build It” program will once again be dismantling these
old computers and having campers create their own robots this
summer. It’s amazing to see what was created last summer and
we would be thrilled to take your old computer to camp and
let our campers imagination run wild as they create, learn and
explore in You Build It!
Please bring computers to our area luggage pick-up locations
(Westchester, Rockland, Livingston, Long Island) on Sunday, June
21st where our staff will be more than happy to transport them
up to camp.
Thanks in advance for your help; hopefully this helps to declutter your basement just a bit and allows you to recycle at the
same time.
CAMPER REFLECTIONS
Written By: : Noa K. – Camper,
Summers 2011 - 2015
It’s what I live and breathe for
It’s what keeps me going
It’s the reason I wake up every morning
Knowing your one day closer
It’s where I’ve grown up and learned to be
whom I am
It’s the nucleus of my world
It’s where I lean to grow and strive
To become the person we all want to be
It’s where we build friendships that last a lifetime
It’s knowing when I leave, it never leaves you
It’s where we have messy bunks
And clothes that don’t belong to us
It’s where I take on new adventure and take a
leap of faith
It’s where we learn song versus that will always
be remembered
From having countless memories and
endless nights
It’s giving us a summer family forever
It’s allowing everyone to run free
It’s that break that everyone needs to get away
It’s feeding me friendly competition
It’s letting me taste that fire
It’s spitting out photographs to reminisce on
It’s sharing times where you have to be there
to understand
It’s creating bonds so strong that never burn out
It’s where I will do anything to have one more day
It’s where my tears represent my love
It’s where I know when I wake up, its goodbye
It’s camp, and it’s my happy place!
COUNSELOR’S CORNER
REFLECTIONS
FROM GAZZA
Recently during an interview with a prospective staff member, I was asked about my first summer
at Iroquois Springs… “What was the experience like for you as a first time counselor?” The question
caught me off guard and I said what came first to my mind, “It was an amazing experience.” Later
that night, the question still lingered. What were the vivid memories that I could share about my first
summer at Iroquois Springs as a counselor back in 2001?
First off, I can’t believe I passed through the Iroquois Springs gates for the first time fifteen years
ago. As the bus turned into the tree-lined driveway, my stomach filled with butterflies. Having
never experienced camp before, as a camper or counselor, I was all nerves and anticipation. What
was I getting myself into? A summer at camp in the United States? Well, whatever it meant, I was
determined to work hard and absorb every part of what camp had to offer. Orientation Week sped by
in a blur of team building games and workshops, as we learned as much as we could about camp and
working with children. Before I knew it, the buses were rolling in and Iroquois Springs was officially
open!
Boys 4 filled with ten boys and four counselors eager for the summer to start. I can still remember all
of them - they were my summer family. Together we played baseball and soccer, jammed in the bunk
while a camper played his guitar, and pushed each other to take risks while having a blast. One of the
highlights of the summer was the overnight trip to the legendary Tarzan’s Lair where we camped for
the night, enjoying a lot of laughs around the campfire and an epic game of capture the flag in the
dark. To this day campers and counselors alike still reminisce about this night.
During this first summer, in addition to being able to work with a great group of children, camp
provided many opportunities for to me to take leadership roles and try new things myself. A personal
highlight was being chosen to lead my tribals team. Dressed up as Braveheart, I marched the team
into the Field House and kicked off the events with a William Wallace worthy roar. It was through
being a role model and caretaker for campers, as well as being able to step up as a leader that I
learned a great deal about myself and grew as an individual. At Iroquois Springs I developed my own
self-confidence and the ability to lead others, and improved my time-management and problemsolving skills.
Now, fifteen years later, as I interview
prospective counselors, I try to describe the
experience of being a counselor and what
it really entails, which is not easy, but I do
promise applicants that if they come to
Iroquois Springs with their enthusiasm,
and the willingness to work hard and
be selfless, they will have a memorable
summer just as I had back in 2001.

Message from our Camp Office
With less than 100 days to go until camp, the office has shifted
into high gear. As you are preparing for camp, so are we and readily
available to help our camp families with questions about forms,
medications, packing, etc. Our summer office has always been a high
functioning team and we are happy to welcome back Becky, Daria,
Rebecca & Robin for another summer.
We are however losing a valued team member this summer. Sheila,
who has been part of the Iroquois Springs office staff since 2001 is
unable to return and she will definitely be missed. As many of you will
know, Sheila was the voice on our office phones in the evening. Our
campers all got to know her as they entered the office for their phone
calls. Always smiling & caring, Sheila was a well-known figure in our
camp community. She handled herself with professionalism, ready to
lend a hand and always ready to listen to parent concerns.
Don’t Forget to Pack…
Every day in camp should be a special
one and we want to make sure you get
the most from every experience this
summer. While packing for camp, here
are a few things not to forget:
When asked about Sheila, Larry W. (Lah) had this to say “During the
late afternoons and evenings, Sheila’s welcoming smile, helpfulness
and camaraderie have been a foundation of our camp office for over
20 years. From managing the hectic camper phone call periods to her
knowledge of the workings of camp and her sage advice, Sheila will be
missed. And, she is a great friend. Thank you, Sheila!
We will miss her at camp and hopefully she will be able to return
to the office for another summer in the future.

For the Crust:
1½ cups graham cracker crumbs
¼ cup malted milk powder
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
¾ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
¼ cup heavy cream
For the Chocolate Filling:
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
cup heavy cream
1½ teaspoons light corn syrup
2½ tablespoons unsalted butter
For the Marshmallow Topping:
1 (10-ounce) bag marshmallows
Directions
1. Make the Graham Cracker Crust: In a large bowl, whisk together
the graham cracker crumbs, malted milk powder, sugar and salt. In a
measuring cup, whisk together the melted butter and heavy cream,
then pour over the crumb mixture. Using a rubber spatula, fold and mix
and the ingredients together until all of the dry ingredients are evenly
moistened. Turn the mixture out into a 9-inch pie plate and press evenly
along the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Refrigerate while the
chocolate filling is prepared.
2. Make the Chocolate Filling: Place the chopped chocolate in a
medium bowl. Combine the heavy cream and corn syrup in a small
saucepan and place over medium heat. Warm the mixture until it is
just barely boiling. Remove from the heat and pour over the chopped
chocolate. Let sit for 1 minute, then gently begin stirring with a rubber
spatula (starting in the middle and working your way out), mixing
until all of the chocolate is melted and combined. Add the butter and
stir until melted and incorporated. (If the mixture cools down too
much to totally melt the chocolate or butter, microwave in 10-second
increments on 50% power, stirring until everything is completely
melted together.)
3. Pour the chocolate mixture into the chilled pie crust and spread into
an even layer. Gently press the marshmallows into the chocolate filling,
covering the top of the pie with marshmallows. Chill the pie briefly (30
minutes to 1 hour) to allow the chocolate the set. When ready to serve,
use a kitchen torch to toast the marshmallows. The pie can be kept at
room temperature as long as it’s not warmer than about 72 degrees.
If your kitchen is warmer than that, then I would refrigerate the pie so
the chocolate filling doesn’t melt.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
We want to take time to remind
you of our cell phone & electronics policy.
We know one critical component of the camp experience is
the opportunity for kids to “unplug.” We strongly believe it
is central to being at camp and will count on campers and
parents to support our stance on this without exception.
In the instance of a camper being found in possession of a
cell phone or a disallowed electronic device, that camper
will have to go home for three-nights. Parents will have to
make arrangements to pick-up and return the camper to
camp. Should the camper be away from camp on the senior
trip, parents will need to pick up their child from the trip
location.
We hope that the idea of missing three entire days of camp
will discourage campers and parents from disregarding this
important policy.
Thanks for your continued support and cooperation in
making Iroquois Springs a camp community we all feel
good about calling our summer home.
We wanted to remind you that our Parent
