SBA starts up S.A. businesses

San Antonio kicked off National
Small Business Week with a small
workshop for prospective business
owners at the San Antonio Public
Library on Monday.
Whether you’re looking to open
a new restaurant or start your own
construction company in San Antonio, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) can help you.
San Antonio’s SBA office partners with several programs that
specialize in helping new businesses and owners, whether you
are a veteran, a minority or are
simply unsure how to write a solid
business plan.
Leo Davila, a lender relations
specialist for the SBA, spoke to
prospective business owners about
the importance of small businesses
during the library workshop.
“You actually run the economy,”
Davila said. “The country doesn’t
run unless small businesses are
growing.”
According to the U.S. SBA,
small businesses have created
more than 65 percent of all new
job creation since 1995, and they
generate more than 55 percent of
all sales in the U.S.
The biggest obstacle to successfully running a new business is
new owners not understanding the
resources available to them.
Although the SBA does not lend
money directly to small businesses,
they offer guarantees to banks
and credit unions, which makes
the loan process easier for new
entrepreneurs and small business
owners.
The SBA can also help prospective business owners who struggle
with collateral or less-than-stellar

GRAMMY winners Los Texmaniacs at Alamo Beer Company

After recording his famous bajo
sexto sound on 11 GRAMMY winning albums, including the Rolling
Stones “Voodoo Lounge,” San
Antonio’s Max Baca and his group
Los Texmaniacs are again pushing
the envelope of Tex-Mex music.
Their new album titled, “Americano
Groove” builds upon the group’s
South Texas Conjunto roots and
carries their core sound into the
familiar genres of country, rock,
cumbia and other vibrant musical
fusions. Produced by Los Lobos’
Steve Berlin, critics have dubbed
the new album “the landmark
Tex-Mex album of the decade”.
Audiences will be able to feel their
groove on Friday, May 8 at a free
concert held at Alamo Beer Company, located at 202 Lamar Street,
beginning at 6 p.m.
Playing alongside Los Texmaniacs will be Los Lobos’ David
Hidalgo, Rick Treviño and Augie
Meyers. There will be a special
return appearance by GRAMMY
lifetime achievement award winner Flaco Jimenez. Honky Tonker,
Amanda Cevallos and the High
Hands will start the music.
Alamo Beer Company recently
opened its doors to the public on
March 6 and soon after inked a deal
partnering with Los Texmaniacs as
an officially sponsored music artist.
The San Antonio brewery, located
in the epicenter of all things TexMex, felt the group was a great fit
in its outreach efforts going forward.
“A huge part of being a local
brewery is being able to tie into our
community. Los Texmaniacs are a
great blend of musical styles and
represent our diverse local flavor.
We’re very happy they are part of
our team,” Eugene Simor, President
and Founder of Alamo Beer Company told La Prensa.
The album recorded at Wavelab
Studios in Tuscon, Arizona and
Austin’s Public-HiFi studio features
Kevin Fowler, Alejandro Escovedo,
Joe Ely and Rick Treviño. The
album also includes musical contributions from legend Augie Meyers
and Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo
and Berlin. All songs were written
or co-written by Los Texmaniacs
front man, Max Baca. Baca has
been Flaco Jimenez’s right-hand
man, is a member of the GRAMMY
winning super group Los Super 7,
and toured with the original Texas
Tornados. The band, which is an
ambassador of Tex-Mex music,
kicked off a world tour in China this
week and have dates set in Canada,
Switzerland and Russia.
The new album will be available
in stores or online for download in
the latter part of May.

Public hearings for proposed VIA route changes

Centro Plaza, VIA’s newest and
most distinctive transit center, is
scheduled to open for service this
September. This modern plaza
will provide a comfortable waiting
area, digital next-bus arrival signs,
restrooms, vending machines, and
a customer service center. Bus service will be routed through Centro
Plaza to help minimize travel
times and facilitate transfers.
VIA Metropolitan Transit will
hold public hearings to receive
comments from citizens regarding
proposed route changes scheduled
to take effect September 14, 2015
in conjunction with the opening
of Centro Plaza. The remaining
hearings will be held on the following dates:
Thursday, May 7, 2015 – 6 p.m.

Served by Routes 75 and 76

The proposed changes are as
follows:
• 2 Blanco Frequent – Route
will be modified so that the trips
currently ending at Parliament
will extend to serve the Walmart
at Blanco and Wurzbach Parkway.
• 3 San Pedro Skip – Route will
be modified to end at the North
Star Transit Center with the
extended trips to Blossom Park
and Ride covered by the modified Route 4. Instead of traveling
through downtown, the route will
serve Centro Plaza and continue
as Route 76 instead of Route 46.
Frequency will be increased to
every 15 minutes from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
• 4 San Pedro Frequent – Route
will provide extended trips to
Blossom Park and Ride previously served by Route 3, and it
will continue through downtown
as Route 24 instead of Route 20.
• 14 Perrin Beitel Frequent
– Route will be modified to
serve Centro Plaza and continue
now in your community

New SAISD Superintendent wants
to raise student achievement levels

The San Antonio Independent
School District Board of Trustees named Pedro Martinez as the
District’s new superintendent on
Monday evening.
Martinez is currently serving
as Superintendent in Residence
for the Nevada Department of
Education in Reno, Nevada, but
said he would be signing a five
year contract with the District.
“It takes several years to create changes that are sustainable,”
Martinez said. “From just looking at the data alone, I can tell
that San Antonio has had a lot
of good gains in recent years,
but there’s a lot of work to be
done. I want to make sure that the
changes I do make go through.”
The board began searching for
a new superintendent after Dr.
Sylvester Perez announced his
resignation from the position in
November 2014.
Perez is the latest in a string
of SAISD Superintendents to
resign before completing their
five year contract. Superintendents are able to collect their full
five-year salaries even if they do
not stay the full term. Perez held
an annual salary of $283,000,
which made him the highest paid
superintendent in Bexar County.
Martinez wants the District to
know he will stay in San Antonio
for at least five years.
“San Antonio is such a vibrant
city, and I’ve never heard anyone
say anything negative about it,”
Martinez said. “I want to people
to have the same attitude towards
SAISD. I know we can do that by
partnering with the community
and parents.”
As of 2013, SAISD has an
83 percent graduation rate, but
Martinez wants to raise those
numbers and increase the number of students in Advanced
Placement classes.
“Pedro’s qualifications, experience and personal narrative make him exceptionally
qualified for the position and
we could not be more pleased
with the decision,” Ed Garza,
the SAISD Board President said.
The SAISD board will meet
on May 11 to finalize Martinez’s
contract terms.

Three hidden travel gems highlight
Hispanic Heritage sites near San Antonio

The Texas Historical Commission’s (THC) new travel guide,
Hispanic Texans: Journey from
Empire to Democracy, showcases a range of heritage tourism
sites with cultural and historical attractions significant to the
Hispanic experience in Texas.
Whether an afternoon adventure
or weeklong road trip, visits to
these sites are a meaningful way
to learn about and connect with
Texas history and culture.
The 100-page guide is organized by locations in the THC’s
10 Texas Heritage Trail Regions,
allowing users to plan trips according to destinations within
specific areas. With hundreds of
entries, the publication includes
sites everyone has heard of—like
the missions of San Antonio—but
also highlights intriguing lesser-
known destinations.
Here are three locations in or
near the San Antonio area to start
the fun and educational journeys
awaiting you across Texas:
The Casa Navarro State Historic Site is located in the heart
of old San Antonio near the
Alamo. Visitors can tour the
compound with interactive and
educational exhibits, learning
about the Texas statesman’s
career as an advocate for Texas
independence and Tejano rights
in the mid-1800s.
North of the city in Seguin,
the Juan Seguín Burial Site pays
tribute to the noted 19th century
statesman Juan Nepomuceno
Seguín, who served in the battles
of the Alamo and San Jacinto.
Later as a senator, Seguín developed and supported legislation
protecting the rights of Tejanos.
A two-hour drive south of
San Antonio, the town of Go-
liad features three historic sites.
Presidio La Bahía and Mission
Espíritu Santo offer a glimpse
into the relationship between
presidios and missions in the
Spanish Colonial period. The
Zaragoza Birthplace honors Ignacio Zaragoza, who led Mexican forces in the defeat of an
invading French army at the
Battle of Puebla in 1862, giving
rise to the Cinco de Mayo holiday brought to the U.S. by later
Mexican immigrants.

Commissioners Court approves additional
90 HALT sites for flooding concerns

Tuesday morning, Bexar County
Commissioners Court approved an
additional 90 Highwater Alert Lifesaving Technology (HALT) sites for
construction and installation of High
Water Detection Systems as part of
the Bexar County Flood Control Program, a 10-year, $500 million capital
improvement program established by
Commissioners Court in 2007.
The Court’s approval of 90 additional sites will include 51 sites to
be installed inside the City of San
Antonio city limits and 39 within
the unincorporated areas of Bexar
County. There are currently 52 locations in Bexar County.
The HALT system is a tool to warn
drivers when there is too much water
over the road to drive through safely.
HALT uses a sensor to detect rising
water and, once the water reaches a
certain depth, the system will warn
drivers to turn around with either
flashing lights or a combination of
flashing lights and gates.
In addition to various levels of
warning, Bexar County citizens will
also have access to a website with
information about the status of all of
the County’s low water crossings at
any given time. The County is working with the City of San Antonio to
provide one comprehensive website
that will provide accurate, real time
information during heavy rain events.
“I have always strongly advocated
for the HALT system. My first priority is safety for the constituents of the
community. The HALT system saves
lives by letting drivers know when
there’s water on the road and not safe
to drive,” County Commissioner Sergio “Chico” Rodriguez stated. “I will
continue to support and promote any
efforts to keep the public safe during
flooding events.”
Additionally, the Court approved
the selection of J3, LLC to provide
construction services for the Old
Fredericksburg Road Low Water
Crossing in Precinct 3. This project
will include the replacement of the
current low water crossing near Old
Fredericksburg Road at Lost Creek
Gap Road with concrete box culverts.
This will allow safe, unflooded
access for passing motorists and
pedestrians during a rainfall event.

Dear Neighbor,
I am writing to you one final
time to encourage you to vote in
this very important election. I have
earned the support of thousands of
District 3 residents, and I would be
honored if you would join them.
It has been a long campaign with
a lot of slogans and accusations
thrown around, but the fact is this:
I have been and will always be
dedicated to serving the neighborhoods that I’ve called home my
entire life.
We have achieved so much
together, and so when you vote,
please consider what you want
from your city council representative. I believe that I have shared
a compelling, positive vision for
our future. We have talked about
the issues that are important to
you and focused on the facts, not
mudslinging and false accusations.
Unfortunately, you will likely
see and hear a lot more negative
campaigning from my opponents
before Saturday’s election. You
don’t have to believe me when I
tell you that their attacks are lies,
just read the newspaper; the San
Antonio Express-News caught one
of my opponents lying about who
was supporting him. And KSATTV News said that his “allegations
don’t seem to stand up.” Spreading
lies is easy, but getting results – as I
have for the past two years – is hard.
During city budget sessions, I
was able to secure a 26 percent
increase in funding for street repair
from 2013 to 2014, and a 34 percent
increase in funding for sidewalks in
that same period.
In addition, since I have served
on city council, we have seen
over $250 million in economic
development, private investment,
and neighborhood revitalization in
District 3. That means we are growing good jobs locally and creating
opportunities.
Public safety has also been a priority for me. I hosted the Big Fix at
the Bode Center and other similar
events where nearly 400 FREE
spay/neuter services were provided
for cats and dogs. And, I worked
with Highlands High School Voices
for Animals on the Silver & Black
Give Back Team Up Challenge.
I’m so proud they were among the
winners of the contest.
With our families’ health and
fitness in mind, I initiated the
annual D3 Fall 5K Family Fun
Run & Walk that was FREE to
the community, so entire families
could participate. I was so glad to
see Siclovía brought south so our
neighborhoods could take part in
this outdoor event. And, I could
not be prouder about opening a
SPARK Park at Adams Elementary, and two new Kaboom parks
for our area children.
These are just a few of the great
things we’ve accomplished together since I took office. I hope
I can count on your support in the
upcoming election.

México inscribe nueve zonas arqueológicas
en bienes culturales de Unesco
EFE - Nueve zonas arqueo­
lógicas de México quedaron
inscritas en el Registro Internacional de Bienes Culturales
de la Unesco y tendrán ahora
una mayor protección, informó
la cancillería mexicana en un
comunicado.
La Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la
Ciencia y la Cultura (Unesco)
concluyó el proceso internacional de inscripción de estas nueve
zonas que tendrán una protección especial de esta institución.
Se trata de los sitios de la ciudad prehispánica de Palenque,
Chiapas; la ciudad prehispánica de Teotihuacán, estado de
México; la zona arqueológica de
Monte Albán, Oaxaca; la ciudad
prehispánica de Chichén Itzá,
Yucatán; la ciudad prehispánica
de El Tajín, Veracruz.
Además, la ciudad precolombina de Uxmal y sus tres pue­
blos: Kabah, Labná y Sayil, en
Yucatán; la zona arqueológica
de Paquimé, Chihuahua; la zona
de monumentos arqueológicos
de Xochicalco, Morelos; y la antigua ciudad Maya de Calakmul,
Campeche.
Estas zonas arqueológicas
gozan ahora de inmunidad bajo
el régimen de “protección especial” conforme a la Convención
para la Protección de los Bienes
Culturales en caso de Conflicto
Armado.

Hispanos con diabetes perciben su enfermedad de manera distinta

La diabetes tipo 2 afecta más a
los hispanos que a cualquier otro
grupo étnico en Estados Unidos. Un
reciente estudio reveló diferencias
significativas en la forma en que los
hispanos con diabetes tipo 2 perci­
ben y manejan esta enfermedad a
comparación con los no hispanos.
Según la encuesta, realizada por
Harris Poll en marzo del 2015,
los pacientes hispanos son más
propensos a sentir aislamiento,
admiten tener mucha dificultad
para ajustarse a la vida después
del diagnóstico y la familia es su
mayor motivación para mantener
su enfermedad bajo control.
Los números indican que 34 por
ciento de los pacientes se sienten
aislados de sus amigos, familiares o
de la comunidad debido a la diabetes en comparación a 18 por ciento
de los pacientes no hispanos.
Así mismo, solo 40 por ciento
sabe que el nivel ideal de azúcar en
la sangre es el 7 por ciento o menos,
en comparación con 60 por ciento
de los pacientes no hispanos.
Además, 76 por ciento de los
pacientes dicen que su familia es su
motivación más grande para cuidar
de su enfermedad en comparación
con 51 por ciento de pacientes no
hispanos.
El Dr. Samuel Arce, un médico
de familia en la ciudad de Nueva
York y quien es el único miembro
hispano en la junta directiva de
la Asociación Americana de la
Diabetes, explicó que aunque la comunidad hispana tiene los números
más altos de incidencia en diabetes,
le falta el mismo cuidado que otros
grupos le ponen.
“Esta encuesta lo que muestra es
que nuestra comunidad no está teniendo el mismo control por falta de
recursos, sea por el lenguaje, sea por
la cultura, sea por la falta de seguro
médico, o el acceso al médico”,
comentó el Dr. Arce a La Prensa.
Según la encuesta, 59 por ciento
de los pacientes hispanos hablan
español solamente, mayormente o
tanto como el inglés en su casa.
“Desafortunadamente, aunque
los latinos ya pronto vamos a formar
25 por ciento de la población, los
médicos latinos en este país si acaso
alcanzan el 5 por ciento”, expresó
el Dr. Arce. “Una de las cosas que
estamos tratando de hacer es entrenar a mis colegas para que también
sean más sensitivos y puedan llevar
a cabo una entrevista con su paciente
que sea más eficaz”.
Una de las iniciativas de la Asociación Americana de Diabetes
enfocada en los latinos se titula
“Por tu Familia”. El programa tiene
como propósito impulsar a padres a
que inviertan tiempo en el cuidado
personal de su salud.
El Dr. Arce explicó que muchos
padres latinos se enfocan en el cuidado de la salud de sus hijos pero no
en el de ellos mismos.
“Tratamos de incentivar a que los
pacientes lo hagan no por ellos, sino
por la familia que depende de ellos”,
añadió el doctor.
La página de Internet de la iniciativa provee recetas para la pla­
nificación de comidas saludables,
orientación sobre lo que debe de
comer y tomar, ofrece diferentes
tipos de actividad física y consejos
para perder de peso.
Igualmente, el doctor enfatizó el
programa de apoyo de Invokana
CarePath. Invokana es un medicamento con receta que se utiliza junto
con dieta y ejercicio para disminuir
el nivel de azúcar en la sangre en
personas adultas con diabetes tipo 2.
El programa de apoyo Invokana
Carepath ofrece recursos en español de manera gratuita por Internet.
Pacientes podrán encontrar planes
de acción, planificación de comidas
y recetas por medio de artículos y
videos.
Por ejemplo, Lucía Grimaldo
Shiffer es una paciente con diabetes
tipo 2 quien decidió tomar acción
y control de su enfermedad y ha
usado el medicamento Ivokana y los
recursos de apoyo.
“Tengo más de un año que recibí
mi diagnóstico y cuando mi doctor
me dio los resultados me sentí muy
desesperada, me sentí sola, y como
que no tenía esperanza”, expresó
Shiffer.
Después de ver a su madre sufrir
por la misma enfermedad, Shiffer
decidió que la diabetes no iba a
tomar control de su vida.
La paciente enlistó a un equipo
de personas, entre ellas a su médico,
quien le refirió a una nutricionista
para orientarla sobre su cambio de
alimentación y el tipo de ejercicio
que debía de realizar.
Aunque la reciente encuesta indica que hay una falta de información
para los hispanos, Shiffer afirma que
hay lo suficiente para mantener la
enfermedad bajo control.
“Hay esperanza y hay mucho
apoyo”, comentó Shiffer. “Enlisten a
su familia, tengan una conversación
con su doctor y sus amigos, y no
tengan vergüenza porque aun con
esta enfermedad uno puede vivir una
vida larga y con mucha esperanza”.
Para prevenir la diabetes, el
doctor recomienda aumentar la
actividad física, y buscar un buen
médico con quien pueda establecer
una buena relación.
El diabetes tipo 2 es la forma más
común de la diabetes y significa
que el cuerpo no produce suficiente
insulina o las células no hacen uso
de la insulina.

Proteja a su bebé con las vacunas
Por CDC*
La vacunación es una de las
mejores maneras en que los padres
pueden proteger a sus bebés contra
14 enfermedades infantiles graves
antes de los 2 años. Vacune a su
hijo de acuerdo al calendario de
vacunación recomendado por los
CDC para que cuente con una protección comprobada y segura contra
las enfermedades.
Es importante que los niños
reciban todas las vacunas. Las enfermedades que se pueden prevenir
con vacunas pueden ser muy graves,
incluso mortales, especialmente
para los bebés y niños pequeños.
Las vacunas han ayudado mucho
a mejorar la salud de los niños en los
Estados Unidos.
La mayoría de los padres de hoy
en día nunca han experimentado
directamente las consecuencias
devastadoras que las enfermedades
prevenibles con vacunas tienen en
familias o comunidades.
Aunque la mayoría de estas enfermedades no son comunes en los Estados Unidos, todavía ocurren en el
resto del mundo. Es importante que
continuemos protegiendo a nuestros
niños con vacunas porque se pueden
presentar brotes de enfermedades
prevenibles con vacunas, y de
hecho, todavía ocurren en este país.
Protección
El aumento en los casos o brotes
de tosferina (pertussis) que se han
notificado recientemente es un
ejemplo de la gravedad de las enfermedades prevenibles con vacunas.
Durante el 2014, se reportaron
más de 28,000 casos de tosferina
a los CDC y se espera que este
número aumente a medida que se
concilien las cantidades de casos.
El 2012 fue un año récord con
más de 48,000 casos, esto repre-
sentó la mayor cantidad de casos que
hemos visto en los últimos 60 años.
La tosferina puede ser mortal,
especialmente para los bebés muy
pequeños. Desde el 2000 hasta el
2014, se reportaron 277 muertes
causadas por la tosferina en los Estados Unidos. Casi todas las muertes
(241 de las 277) ocurrieron en bebés
menores de 3 meses, que son muy
pequeños para obtener una protección completa contra la tosferina a
través de las vacunas.
Se siguen presentando casos y
brotes de sarampión en los Estados
Unidos. Hasta la fecha durante este
año, se han reportado más de 150
personas con sarampión en este
país. La mayoría de esos casos forman parte de un brote asociado a un
parque de diversiones en California.
El sarampión se transmite fácilmente y puede ser grave; causa
neumonía, encefalitis (inflamación
del cerebro) y hasta la muerte. Los
niños pequeños tienen el riesgo
más alto de sufrir complicaciones
graves a causa de esta enfermedad.
El sarampión sigue siendo común en
muchas partes del mundo, como en
Europa, Asia, el Pacífico y África.
El sarampión entra a los Estados
Unidos a través de residentes de los
EE. UU. y visitantes no vacunados
que se contagian cuando están en
otros países.
El sarampión se puede propagar
si llega a una comunidad en los EE.
UU. con grupos de personas que no
hayan sido vacunadas.
Vacunar a su bebé según el calen­
dario de vacunación recomendado
le da la mejor protección contra
14 enfermedades infantiles graves,
como el sarampión y la tosferina,
antes de cumplir los dos años.
El calendario recomendado está
diseñado para proteger a los bebés
y niños a temprana edad cuando son
más vulnerables y antes de que se
expongan a enfermedades potencialmente mortales.
El calendario de vacunación recomendado para los bebés incluye
protección de las vacunas contra las
siguientes enfermedades:

recomiendan que todas las personas

Aunque en los Estados Unidos
ocurren brotes de algunas enfermedades prevenibles con vacunas,
la propagación de la enfermedad
normalmente se reduce o se detiene
porque la mayoría de las personas
están vacunadas o protegidas al
te­ner inmunidad contra la enfermedad.
Si dejamos de vacunar, hasta los
pocos casos que ocurren en este
país podrían rápidamente pasar a
ser decenas o centenares de miles
de casos.
Afortunadamente, la mayoría
de los padres eligen vacunar a sus
hijos y las tasas de vacunación en
este país alcanzan, o están cerca de
alcanzar, niveles sin precedente. De
hecho, menos del 1 % de los niños
no recibe ninguna de las vacunas.
Sin embargo, algunos niños no han
recibido todas sus vacunas y, por
lo tanto, no están completamente
inmunizados. Es importante que los
niños reciban todas las dosis de las
vacunas según el calendario de vacunación recomendado. No recibir
todas las dosis de una vacuna deja
a los niños en peligro de contraer
enfermedades graves.
Por eso es importante asegurarse
de que sus hijos estén al día con
las vacunas. Llame al pediatra para
averiguar si es hora de ponerle alguna de las vacunas.
El pago
La mayoría de los planes de
seguro médico cubren el costo de
las vacunas, pero es conveniente
que verifique con su proveedor de
seguro antes de ir al médico. Si no
tiene seguro médico, o si su seguro
médico no cubre las vacunas, su hijo
podría reunir los requisitos para recibir las vacunas a través del programa
Vacunas para Niños (VFC, por sus
siglas en inglés).
El programa VFC ayuda a las
familias de los niños que reúnen los
requisitos y que posiblemente de
otra manera no tendrían acceso a las
vacunas infantiles recomendadas.
Este programa federal proporciona
vacunas para los niños que reúnen
los requisitos sin tener que pagar
por la vacuna, aunque es posible
que haya un cargo administrativo.
Estos cargos administrativos ayudan a los proveedores de atención
médica a cubrir los costos del servicio, como el almacenamiento de
las vacunas y el pago del personal
que las administra a los pacientes.
Los niños menores de 19 años
de edad reúnen los requisitos para
recibir las vacunas del VFC si:
Cumplen los requisitos para recibir Medicaid;
No tienen seguro médico
Son indoamericanos o nativos
de Alaska
Tienen seguro médico insuficien­
te y reciben vacunas a través de los
centros de salud con acreditación
federal (FQHC), centros de salud
rurales (RHC) o por parte de pro­
veedores autorizados mediante un
acuerdo con el estado.
Los niños que reúnan uno o más
de los requisitos anteriores pueden
recibir las vacunas del programa
VFC a través de los proveedores
inscritos en este programa. No se
puede negar ninguna vacuna del
programa VFC a los niños que
reúnan los requisitos si sus familias
no pueden pagar los cargos administrativos.

Realizan primer festival anual “Tejas Fest” de SA Clubhouse

Los servicios que ofrece esta institución para las personas que acuden
en busca de ayuda son variados.
Estos están disponibles a través de
sus departamentos de Centro de
Negocios, Centro de Conexión a
la Comunidad, Centro Culinario y
Centro de Bienes­tar.
En estas divisiones se dan clases
de computación, capacitación de
informática, entrenamiento de jardine­
ría (landscaping), planeación para
obtener un menú alimenticio bajo un
presupuesto mensual, y clases para
San Antonio Club House, agencia dedicada a la salud mental, dio
el primer paso para establecer una
tradición: el primer festival anual
“Tejas Fest”, el sábado pasado, con
el propósito de crear atención de la
comunidad en los padecimientos
psíquicos persistentes que aquejan a
un número considerable de personas
de todas las edades.
SA Clubhouse está ubicada en el
445 Recoleta Rd. Además tiene una
sucursal en Clubhouse Las Palmas
(4126 San Luis, St.)
La organización es una agencia no
lucrativa establecida con la misión de
proveer esperanza y oportunidades
de salud y bienestar para personas
diagnosticadas con padecimientos
mentales persistentes de una manera
gratuita, con el fin de que actúen en
la comunidad de una manera autosuficiente y saludable.

del sector privado para promover sus

No abrocharse el cinturón podría salir muy caro

El Departamento de Transporte del Estado de Texas (TxDOT) anunció recientemente
que las agencias del orden público aplicarán mano dura contra los conductores y pasajeros
que no utilicen el cinturón de
seguridad del 18 al 31 de mayo.
Esta medida forma parte de su
14ta campaña anual “Abroche o
Pague” (Click It or Ticket).
Abrocharse el cinturón de
seguridad es un hábito sencillo
que puede proteger la vida de
miles de conductores texanos
de lesiones graves o incluso
la muerte, explica TxDOT en
boletín de prensa.
“Es demasiado triste saber
que se pierden tantas vidas en
las carreteras de Texas porque
las personas todavía no se abrochan el cinturón de seguridad”,
afirmó el director ejecutivo adjunto de TxDOT, John Barton.
“Estos conductores tienen
amigos y familiares que nunca
podrán sobreponerse a la pérdida de su ser querido. Es realmente sencillo: los cinturones
de seguridad salvan vidas. Cada
persona en un vehículo tiene
que ponerse el cinturón”.
Las leyes de Texas exigen
que todos los que viajen en un
vehículo se abrochen el cinturón de seguridad, incluyen­
do los pasajeros del asiento
trasero.

salgan disparados en un choque
y aumenta en un 45 por ciento
las probabilidades de sobrevivir.
En las camionetas pickup, esas
cifras saltan hasta 60 por ciento
porque esos vehículos tienen
el doble de probabilidades de
voltearse en un choque que los
automóviles”, afirma la entidad.
La Administración Nacional
de Seguridad en las Autopistas
(NHTSA) estimó que, desde su
creación, la campaña “Abroche
o Pague” en Texas ha resultado
en una disminución de casi
4,319 choques, a la vez que ha
prevenido más de 72,926 lesiones graves y ha ahorrado $16.7
mil millones de dólares en gastos económicos relacionados.

Popovich: “Se tuvo buena temporada”

En los últimos cuatro años la
franquicia Silver & Black se ha
distinguido por ganar más de
cincuenta partidos, marca que le
ha dado la oportunidad de clasificarse cómodamente en la serie
del playoff en la Conferencia
del Oeste.
En el año 2011, los Spurs tuvie­
ron marca de 61 victorias por 21
derrotas. Fueron eliminados en el
sexto partido de la primera ronda
por los Grizzlies de Memphis, lo
que pegó duro en la estructura
del equipo. Por esta razón Gregg
Popovich, entrenador en jefe, en
la siguiente temporada de 2012,
–con un cuadro más agresivo–
le disputó la final del oeste al
Thunder de Oklahoma City que
se agenció la serie 4 a 2.
En el año 2013, Spurs se cobró
venganza de los Grizzlies, derro­
tándolos en la gran final de la
Conferencia del Oeste en 4 partidos, disputándole el campeonato
absoluto al Heat de Miami que
en siete peleados partidos ganó
la serie 4-3.
En el año 2014, Popovich con

Se confirma la lesión de Pacquiao y el boxeo
vuelve a estar bajo investigación
EFE - Lo peor que se temía ha
vuelto a suceder, el deporte del
boxeo se encuentra envuelto en otra
investiga­ción legal después que se
confirmase oficialmente que el púgil
filipino Manny Pacquiao sufre una
lesión en el hombro derecho y tendrá
que pasar por el quirófano.
Según los asesores de Pacquiao,
el excampeón del mundo del peso
welter, versión Organización Mundial
de Boxeo (OMB), sufre un desgarro
en el manguito rotador que requiere
una ope­ración y un proceso de recuperación que podría extenderse hasta
un año.
El responsable médico que lo
atiende es el prestigioso cirujano de
Los Ángeles, Neal ElAttrache, que
confirmó a varios medios de comunicación la existencia de la lesión
que sufre Pacquiao y la gravedad de
la misma.
“Poseemos una resonancia magnética que confirma que tiene un
desgarro del manguito rotador. Se
trata de un desgarre mayor”, explicó
ElAttrache.
Este cirujano ya ha intervenido por
el mismo tipo de lesión a deportistas
como el mariscal de campo de los
Patriots de Nueva Inglaterra, Tom
Brady y al escolta Kobe Bryant, de
Los Ángeles Lakers.
Ni ElAttrache habló de una fecha
para la operación ni tampoco lo
hizo Michael Koncz, el asesor de
Pacquiao, aunque sí anunció que se
realizará en Los Ángeles.
La confirmación de la lesión y la
ocultación que de la misma hicieron
los responsables del campo de trabajo
de Pacquiao ha sido otro “nocáut” de
falta de credibilidad y limpieza en
el siempre cuestionado mundo del
deporte del boxeo.
De hecho, en Estados Unidos, de
la llamada “Pelea del Siglo” ya nadie
habla, y si lo hacen es para decir
que después de lo que vieron en el
cuadrilátero y el dinero que tuvieron
que pagar por seguirla a través de la
televisión (100 dólares por conexión),
se trato del “Robo del Siglo”.
Nadie del equipo de Pacquiao,
encabezado por el promotor Bob
Arum, y el entrenador del campeón
filipino, Freddie Roach, informó ni

Arum explicó que Pacquiao, de
34 años, había subido lesionado al
cuadrilátero y con dolor en el hombro
porque la Comisión Atlética no le
autorizó a que se le pudiese inyectar
un antiinflamatorio.
El presidente de la Comisión,
Francisco Aguilar, acusó a los repre­
sentantes de Pacquiao de no haber
cumplido con el proceso legal que
hay establecido antes de cada pelea.
Aguilar informó el lunes de que la
fiscalía del estado de Nevada investigará porque Pacquiao firmó un “no”
en el día previo de la pelea cuando le
tocó llenar el cuestionario de la comi­
sión sobre si tenía algún tipo de lesión.
“Vamos a recabar toda la información y analizar las circunstancias”,
explicó Aguilar. “Tendremos una
discusión. Como responsable de
conceder las licencias en la comisión
uno quiere asegurarse de que los
boxeadores entregan la información
más actualizada, de lo contrario el
proceso no funciona y al final surgen
los problemas legales”.
Al margen de lo que pueda estable­
cer la fiscalía con la investigación
que ha abierto, es casi seguro que
Pacquiao será cuando menos multado
y tal vez suspendido por la Comisión
Atlética de Nevada por no cumplir
con el reglamento.
El púgil filipino, que se llevó más
de 100 millones de dólares por la
pelea del sábado, tendrá tiempo de
cumplir cualquier tipo de sanción
mientras se recupera de la lesión.
Además, ya se habla que así tendrá tiempo de pensar en la mejor
estrategia de cara a la revancha con
Mayweather Jr. para el 2016, cuan­
do el invicto estadounidense haya
empatado la mejor marca de todos
los tiempos en poder del legendario
Rocky Marciano (49-0, 43 triunfos
por nocáut) y pueda anunciar que será
la última de su carrera.
