a note from the principal . . .
Well, the end of the school year is here. As I reflect over my first
year as Principal of Jefferson Academy, I believe it has been a good
one. When I started the year, it was about survival.

I wanted to make sure that learning still took place, students and teachers
were happy, and as a community we weathered the transition together.
Though not without its bumps along the way, I believe that my goals have
been met. I have learned a few lessons (some the hard way) that I wanted
to share because I feel that we can all benefit from keeping them as a
priority.
1. Be sensitive. We have all walked different journeys to get to Jefferson
Academy. I learned I have to be aware of the individual stories that make
up the collective community. Behavior, choices, and needs arise for
specific reasons that are unique and important.
2. Ask questions and listen. When we know what is going on, we are more
likely to understand and join the efforts to improve. Listening is a large
part of communication. Often, misunderstandings can often be avoided
when communication is good. Asking questions rather than jumping to
conclusions can often open the doors to problem solving and positive
outcomes.
3. Be bold enough to change direction. One of the best examples I have is
the Academy Awards assembly. I proposed a drastic change to the
assembly this year to the President's Council, an organization composed of
all the club presidents in the school. When they heard the idea, they did
not like it and provided a ton of feedback. With their assistance and ideas,
we changed it together and created a new format that was better than the
original idea. An example of changing direction for the better!
Those are just a few lessons of the many I learned this year that I hope to
take into next year. I want to thank the students, parents, Board of
Directors, and faculty of Jefferson Academy for the wonderful lessons you
have taught me.
To the Class of 2015, it is my sincere hope that you take advantage of the
lessons you have learned to make the world a better place. I am confident
you will find success and look forward to seeing what you do. To everyone
else, enjoy your summer break, apply the lessons you have learned, and I
will see you in August if not sooner.

Traffic Reminder
This is a friendly reminder to follow
the traffic pattern as it was
designed. If you are turning left
onto 112th please use the exit
located near the front entrance of
the building. If you are turning right
onto 112th please use the exit
located near the turf field/gravel
parking lot. If we all follow the rules
the traffic will flow smoother allowing all to leave in a timely
manner.
Don’t Forget To Pick Up Your Medication!
If your student has medication stored in
the clinic it is district policy that a parent/
guardian must pick up unused or
discontinued medication at the end of
each school year from the school clinic.
The parent/guardian must collect their
student's unused medication on or before the last day of school. This
includes all prescription and over-the-counter medications including
cough drops, cough syrup, Tylenol, EpiPen, inhaler, and any
injectable medicine.

Builder’s Club Is Doing Amazing Things
On April 23, 2015 the Builder's Club hosted a fundraiser at Sweet
Tomatoes in honor of Sarah Mey, an alumna of the Class of 2006.
Her daughter, Annalise, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma but is
doing well after her last chemo treatment. She is scheduled for a few
more tests next week to determine the next possible steps for
treatment. Please hold her in your thoughts that she will receive
good news. We do want to thank our community as 93 guests
participated in the fundraiser and we managed to raise $188.65 to
donate to the Mey Family to assist with the medical expenses.

Raptor Safety System Now In Use At JA
Starting in May we will be using Raptor Technologies Visitor
Management System. The system allows us to ensure the safety of
our community by performing a quick background check on all
visitors/volunteers in the building and allows us to know who is in
the building in the event of an emergency. When you check in at the
front office, please present your state issued identification card to
Mrs. Aberle. Once you've been established in the Raptor system you
will not have to present your ID but will be asked to log yourself in at
our kiosk.
8th Grade Social Studies Class Studies
Mrs. Ellington's 8th Grade Social Studies Class was busy today....Each
poster is a word they had to define and give examples of the word
Revolution. The posters and papers are all associated with the word
revolution. Each string is a connection they came up with between
the definitions or examples, and on each string there is a label that
explains how they think they are connected. GREAT JOB!

Mr. JA Raises $600 For Officer Montgomery
And His Family
The National Honor Society raised $600 for Officer Montgomery &
his family at the Mr. JA Pageant. There were special guests involved
during the talent portions of the evening.

from Colorado High School Press Association for pages featured in
the 2014-2015 yearbook. (Reported in April Newsletter).

Athletics Update
Boys Golf
Coach Abram Ziemer is set to hit the links this fall with our boy
golfers. They will be sharpening their drives, chips and putts all
around the area this summer.
Girls Volleyball
JA Athletics Under the leadership of the new Volleyball head coach,
Amanda Ferrera, the Lady Jags are ready to start a new era of
success under a new zealous coaching staff. Open gyms, camps,
trainings and tryouts are looming over the spring and summer.
Cross Country
JA Athletics XCers will be running hard this spring and summer under
the training of Coach Hershelman.
Boys Soccer
JA Athletics Believe it or not, Fall is here!! Well, actually, the Fall the
sports are. Boys Soccer is ready for spring team meetings and
summer trainings. Coach Matt Cassell is ready to lead the Jags
deeper into the playoffs than they advanced in 2014. With a bevy of
new, fast talent, the Jags are ready to begin again Kickin' it.

JA Athletics SH Girls soccer is having an incredible year! We wish
Heidi Wendt and Kassidy Hastings the best as they heal from their
recent injuries and we thank the whole team for a great year! Please

update on the playoffs. Jefferson Academy high school girls soccer is
in the playoffs! The first round will be Friday, May 8 with Bayfield

Junior High Girls Soccer
JA Athletics JH Girls Soccer are slicing and dicing the middle school
competition. With a cadre of talented JH soccer girls, next year's
high school girls soccer team looks to have a bounty of talent.
Jefferson Academy high school girls soccer is in the playoffs! The first
round will be Friday, May 8 with Bayfield High School versus
Manitou Springs High School at Community Financial Field at 5PM.
The winner of that game will play the #3 ranked Lady Jags also at
Community Financial Field on Saturday, May 9 at 1 PM. Only CHSAA
and CHSCA passes will be accepted. Game admission will be $7 for
each adult and $6 for students and seniors. No JA or Metro passes
will be honored for this and all subsequent play-off games.
Girls Golf
JA Athletics Jaguar Girls Golf is heading into the homestretch with
our top-ranked ladies ready for the first 4A team championship for
our school. Our top ace and Wake Forest University signee, Jen
Kupcho, is as cool as the underside of a pillow on the golf links.
Watch for her to birdie and eagle her way to the State Tournament
in Carbondale. Congratulations to the girls golf team. They placed
third in Regionals. Jennifer Kupcho shot 1 under par 71(1st); Mariah
Ehrman shot 10 over par 82 (7th), Emily Grantham shot 39 over par
111 (T35th), and Maya Gordon shot 42 over par 114 (T41). Both
Jennifer and Mariah qualified for the 4A State Tournament to be
played May 18-19 at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale. With the win,
Jennifer has won the Regional Tournament and qualified for State
the past four years. Mariah has qualified for State the past 3 years.
Congrats Ladies and good luck at State!
Track and Field
JA Athletics Track and Field boys and girls are traveling all over the
state for meets with high caliber athletes. Many of the JA entrants
are poised for qualifying for the state T&F meet. Thanks Coach
Thimsen!
Baseball

JA Athletics Baseball is in high swing as the Jags, 4-7, and head into
the heat of the Metro League heavy hitters. In a series of close
games, the baseballers are still in the hunt for a playoff berth.
SUMMER SPORTS MEETINGS - BASEBALL AND SOCCER
Jefferson Academy Baseball will meet in room 252 on Monday, May
11 at 5:30pm to outline the summer baseball programs. All current
8th grade boys and parents and current 9th through 11th grade boys
and parents interested in baseball are encouraged to attend.

BROOMFIELD — Heidi Wendt knew it the moment it happened.
In an instant the flood of emotions hit the newly crowned prom
queen as she lay prone on the Jefferson Academy turf.
No state soccer tournament. No state track meet.
"It was immediate pain and I knew something was wrong," Wendt
said. "It really hurt."
In a match against Mullen on April 25, Wendt was making a move on
goal after being fed what she called "a really pretty through ball,"
from Marissa Chapman but was beat to it by the Mustangs keeper.
Instead of clearing the ball, the goalie caught Wendt's leg just below
her shin guard and the impact was enough to break the senior's leg
in two spots.

After laying on the field for well over a 30 minutes — with Chapman
at her side — Wendt was taken by ambulance to the hospital and
immediately rushed into surgery. It was a procedure that took a little
bit longer than expected because of Wendt's athletic bone and
muscle structure, but eventually ended with a titanium rod being
placed in her leg.

Athletics - Girls Soccer
It was a devastating blow to the Jaguars soccer team, which enters
this week's Class 3A state tournament as the No. 3 seed despite
losing two of its final three matches without Wendt.
"We'll have to make some adjustments, but hopefully we are all a
little bit healthier," said JA soccer coach Denise Sutton, whose team
will host either Bayfield or Manitou Springs in the second round on
Saturday. "But she and Alycia (Wright) have such a chemistry
together, we will of course have to rebuild that."
How deep is the bond between Wendt and Wright? It goes back to
when each player was seven years old and something that is very
difficult for each to talk about.
"We've been like the dynamic duo up top and she has been like my
partner in crime and I feel lost," said an emotional Wright, after her
team suffered its first defeat last week against top-ranked Colorado
Academy. "But we also have other players who will step up and help
me."
Said Wendt: "I feel really bad for her, because we worked really well
together. The dynamic duo."
Wendt and Wright have combined for 47 goals and 16 assists this
season.
Arguably one of the most accomplished female athletes to ever walk
the halls at Jefferson Academy, Wendt was also a force for the Jags
track team. She had qualified individually in the 100 and the 200
(with a PR of 27.36) as well as the 4x100, 4x200 and sprint medley
relays.
So now the grueling task of rehabilitation is underway for Wendt,
who already has a commitment to play soccer at Colorado Mesa.
The doctors are very hopeful and confident that Wendt, who is not
wearing a cast, will be walking before too long and should be jogging
in the next four to six weeks.
"It is all dependent upon how I react to the therapy," she said.
It is something the Mavericks coaching staff is more than aware of
and have already been working closely with her before her arrival in
Grand Junction.

"They said that they will create a plan and that they will help me get
through this and that they will be there for me," Wendt said. "There
is no change in me not playing."
Lady Jags Win Metro League Tournament
The Lady Jags won their 3rd
Metro League Tournament of
the season on Wednesday at
Kennedy Golf Course. The JA
team total of 125 was 3 strokes
better than that of 2nd place
Colorado Academy. For the
season, the Lady Jags and CA
split, both winning 3
tournaments. Unfortunately,
the league championship is
determined by total team
strokes for the entire season
and CA came out on top by just
5 strokes----1036 to 1041.
Regardless, the team had a very good league season with many high
points. In the end, every regular season tournament provides the
opportunity to prepare for the regional and state tournaments.
Individually, here are the scores for the 5 girls:
34 (1st) - Jennifer
39 (2nd) - Mariah
50 (T11th) - Emily
52 (T15th) - Maya
58 (T22nd) - Bekkah
Congrats to Emily for setting her new personal 9-hole tournament
low!
Overall for the season, Jennifer and Mariah finished 1-2 in the
league for the 2nd straight year. The top 4 in the league earn All
Metro League-First Team honors. Congrats Ladies!

Annual General Meeting Information
A Meet the Candidates event was held on Wednesday, May 6 at
6:30 p.m. at the Secondary in the Commons. It was a great
opportunity for our community to meet the five candidates that are
in the running for two open seats on the Jefferson Academy Board
of Directors.
Absentee Voting – For those that are not able to attend the Board
Meeting on Tuesday, May 19, you may absentee vote Monday, May
11 through Friday, May 15 in both school offices from 7:45 a.m. –
3:45 p.m. There is no proxy voting. We must have a quorum, which
is 20% of our parent/guardian voting, our goal is 500! This is your
opportunity to participate in your school governance. We are
unique that we are a parent governed school. Please vote!
