Committee members provide enrichment activities to encourage and promote healthy lifestyles and relationships during this important stage of their lives. CROWN CLUB JA members serve as mentors to high school age girls who are taught the fundamentals of giving back to our community. Through this program, the young ladies conduct a service project that they plan and facilitate. They also hold Tiara Time, a fundraiser, in the fall to support their service project. GIRLS ENRICHMENT Members offer guidance and friendship by mentoring girls through cultural, vocational and educational programs. Monthly activities are planned for junior high school girls chosen by their school counselors. These girls are generally good students but are at risk in other areas of their lives. GROWING HEALTHY JA volunteers work with local physicians to lead anatomy and physiology discussions of the heart and lung, diseases associated with both and risks associated with smoking and sedentary lifestyles. U PROJECTS lunch and discussing books, JA members open doors for mentoring, friendships and a love for reading. LUNCH & LEARN Members are matched one-on-one with kindergarten through fifth grade students at area schools to establish a positive relationship and find appropriate channels to meet needs that may arise. Committee members share lunch with their student(s) and spend recess time tutoring the student once a week. SCHOLARSHIP Each year, our local chapter provides scholarships for Craighead County students to attend the university, vocational or trade school of their choice. Committee members also assist local students in applying for one of the graduate school scholarships awarded by the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries. To date, Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships and established an endowment at Arkansas State University in 2012. SHARE & WEAR Members work with school counselors to provide clothing and backpacks to children in need throughout our community. The JA clothes closet is stocked with both purchased and gently-used donations. Members are prepared and ready to meet any head-to-toe need reported by area counselors and teachers. KICKSTART KINDERGARTEN Kickstart Kindergarten is a service project with emphasis on literacy tutoring at the Jonesboro Kindergarten Center. Members provide tutoring to emergent readers and make themselves available for any subject students might need help with. Committee members strive to assist these children with academic difficulties before self esteem becomes an issue. THE LEARNING CENTER (TLC) Members aid in classrooms that provide educational services for developmentally delayed children through the children’s center by volunteering as classroom aids and assisting on field trips. At the adult center, members bowl, conduct art and music programs and conduct a speaker series monthly. Each winter, members take the adults shopping for Christmas gifts, as well as purchase and deliver more than 50 winter coats to those in need. LITERACY & MORE While the cornerstone of this project is the weekly book club in area schools, it is about more than just reading. This project provides an opportunity for JA members to meet with fourth, fifth and sixth grade students on a weekly basis during lunch time at school. While eating TIMES TALES Times Tales is a tutoring program for third and fourth graders that makes memorizing times tables fun. This project uses a multi-sensory math program to help kids memorize their multiplication facts through fun stories and tactile objects. 22 23 U ACTIVE MEMBERS Catherine Adams Carrie Allen Shelly 29 U JUNIOR AUXILIARY PRAYER Send us, O God, as Thy messengers to the hearts without a home, to lives without love, to the crowds without a guide. Send us to the children whom none have blessed, to the famished whom none have visited, to the fallen whom none have lifted, to the bereaved whom none have comforted. Kindle Thy flame on the altars of our hearts, that others may be warmed thereby; cause Thy light to shine in our soul, that others may see the way; keep our sympathies and insight ready, our wills keen, our hands quick to help others in their need. Grant us clear vision, true judgement, with great daring as we seek to right the wrong; and so endow us with cheerful love that we may minister to the suffering and forlorn even as Thou wouldst. May the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, rest upon us and upon all our work. May He give us light to guide us, courage to support us and love to unite us, now and forever more. AMEN 30
