The Registration Process A seven-week summer day camp, Camp STAR runs from 9 am - 4:30 pm daily in Highland Park, Illinois. Children 6 to 13 years old attend camp in small age-appropriate groups. Bus transportation to and from Chicago is available for an additional fee. Camp STAR is a joint effort by the Hyperactivity, Attention, and Learning Problems Clinic (HALP) at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Jewish Council for Youth Services. Only one of 12 programs that follow the Summer Treatment Program worldwide, and the only program in Illinois, Camp STAR is an evidence-based, therapeutic program where children learn to manage behavioral, emotional, social and learning issues. In addition to fun, recreational activities this unique seven-week summer day camp will help children learn invaluable skills including: building friendships • following rules • sports competence self-esteem • academic aptitude • social behavior • problem solving Unique Aspects of Camp STAR The Summer Treatment Program Your Camp STAR Staff • Parent Training Program led by our clinical staff. Following the model developed by Russell Barkley, PhD., this weekly group session helps guardians learn strategies to improve compliance and foster a positive parent-child relationship, independence and positive self-esteem. Camp STAR is based on the award-winning Summer Treatment Program (STP) designed for children ages 6 - 13. Developed by William E. Pelham, Jr., Ph.D., STP provides treatment tailored to children’s individual behavioral and learning difficulties. Andrea Chronis-Tuscano, Ph.D. Our Clinical Director is an internationallyrecognized expert on the topic of ADHD, is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland and Director of the Maryland ADHD Program. She is also the recipient of several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a member of the CHADD Professional Advisory Board. • Pre-treatment diagnostic evaluation & goal setting with clinical staff • Ongoing program evaluation • Evaluation of medication efficacy in partnership with your child’s doctor • Emphasis on social rewards and positive reinforcement • Frequent camp-home communication about progress on individualized treatment goals • Detailed treatment summary including treatment recommendations STP was named as a Model Program for Child and Family Mental Health by the Division of Child, Youth, and Family Services of the American Psychological Association; and Program of the Year by CHADD, a national parent advocacy group for children with ADHD. The STP has also been used in clinical trials conducted with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, and is listed in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidencebased Programs and Practices. Camp STAR counselors are trained and closely supervised by licensed clinical psychologists with expertise in ADHD. Janine Rosenberg, Ph.D. Our Assistant Clinical Director is the Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the University of Illinois Chicago’s Hyperactivity, Attention and Learning Problems (HALP) Clinic. She specializes in the evaluation, testing and treatment of children and adolescents with ADHD and related problems. Amy Shimoni, M.Ed. Our Operations Director is the Child and Family Development Specialist at JCYS George W. Lutz Family Center. She is a certified Developmental Therapist and Early Childhood Special Education Teacher.
