I am happy to report that Jefferson Middle School, for the fourth year in a row, is
the recipient of the 2014 Washington Achievement Award. We are honored to receive the awards for Overall Excellence and Reading. To put this all in perspective, there were only four other middle schools in the state that received the honor
of overall excellence.

Student Safety
Earlier this year we also received an award for School of Distinction. This Award
recognizes schools that have shown continuous improvement for five consecutive
years.
This is an extraordinary accomplishment and is a direct reflection of the hard work
of our students, the dedication of our teachers, and the support and guidance of our
parents. For that, I thank you.
The Washington Achievement Awards are sponsored by the Washington State
Board of Education and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. They
celebrate Washington’s top-performing schools and recognize achievement in
many categories. This highly selective award is based on our school’s performance
on the Achievement Index and uses criteria set by the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility waiver.
The Washington Achievement Award is given in six categories: overall excellence,
high progress, reading growth, math growth, extended graduation rate (high and
comprehensive schools only) and English language acquisition.
6
I hope you will visit the OSPI Washington Achievement Awards site to learn more
about the awards and the criteria for selection.
7
The selection process for the Washington Achievement Award is very rigorous,
and all of us take great pride in this accomplishment.

OSDEF - Olympia School District Education Foundation
Parents,
We recently received a grant from the OSDEF (Olympia School District Education Foundation) for our English Teacher, Kristi Smith, to purchase a set of reading books for our 6th
grade class curriculum.
The OSDEF is working all the time to impact our schools by getting donations and sponsors for the various needs our school budgets do not cover. The OSDEF often goes un
noticed and without much thanks. Jefferson staff is so thankful for their donations and assistance whenever we receive it, that we wanted to take this opportunity to thank them
publicly and also make parents aware of this great foundation.
For more info go to: www.osdef.org
To make donations - Mail to: OSDEF, 1113 Legion Way SE, Olympia, WA 98501
WELCOME TO JSSO
JEFFERSON STUDENT SUPPORT ORGANIZATION (JSSO):
JSSO has had a busy year so far! We have a fantastic board who have worked to bring new
healthy options for food in the student store; coordinating volunteers; working on the yearbook, selling Jag Wear hoodies and t-shirts; planning staff appreciation activities; and assisting teachers with funds to enhance their classroom curriculum.
Our Winter and Spring athletes were able to wear their new uniforms with pride! A big thank
you to those who generously donated to this effort!
We are in the process of filling board positions for next year. If you are interested in volunteering for the board, please email us at [email protected]. The board will meet Tuesday, May 26th at 5:30 pm. We are also looking for some 6th and 7th grade parents to help
organize 8th grade graduation on June 11. This is a fun event to celebrate our 8th graders and
we would love to have volunteers from lower grades so the 8th grade parents can be our
guests. Email JSSO if you would like to help set up on June 10 and help make the party a success on June 11.
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered an hour or more this year at our school. Your efforts
have been invaluable!
IMPORTANT END OF YEAR INFORMATION
The last day of school is Friday, June 12th. Students will be released at 11:05 AM and need to
leave the building at that time. School doors will be closed at 11:30 AM for a staff luncheon and will
reopen for business at 1:30 pm that afternoon.
Fines for lost or damaged books, locker damage, sports fines, or fines still carried from past years
must be paid before school is out. Fine lists will be posted in the school. Please look around the
house for any JMS library or text books. Also check with your student to make sure they do not
have any outstanding fines!
Report cards will be mailed out to families the last week in June.
OVERDUE, LOST BOOKS….COME BACK!
The library is missing books! Please look around the house, under the beds, and in the closets for
JMS library books and textbooks. The School District has been doing robo calls for overdue library and textbooks. Fines and fees are also visible on your students Skyward account. You may
also have your student review the overdue list in the library to make sure there are no library or
textbook fines due. Students with fines will not be able to receive their yearbooks until all fines
are paid or the books returned. Unpaid fines will follow students to the high school.
6th & 7th GRADE BBQ JUNE 11th
To celebrate the end of school and recognize our students’ hard work, we are hosting a BBQ
lunch. It will be provided through the school cafeteria for all 6th and 7th graders. This is a regular
school day with an hour-long lunch celebration
INCOMING SIXTH GRADERS TO VISIT JMS
5th Grade Students Visit JMS
The 5th graders from Garfield, LP Brown and other potential JMS 6th graders are coming for a visit! Students will be at Jefferson the morning of Tuesday, June 2nd. The incoming students will
have snacks, meet some of the Jefferson staff, and ask questions about middle school. JMS students will then take 5th grade students on a tour of the school. Fifth graders will return to their elementary schools after the tour.
8th GRADE CELEBRATION JUNE 11th
The 8th grade celebration for students and parents will be on June 11th at 8:00AM in the
school cafeteria. This special event is sponsored by the JSSO and the Jefferson staff.
Please come celebrate with music, food, presentations and guest speakers!
NO BALLOONS PLEASE! We have students who are allergic to latex,
therefore balloons must be given to students outside the school.
Thank you for your cooperation.

IT’S BEE SEASON!
Students are often outside during the day for PE, lunch time and track. If your child is
allergic to bees or has bad allergies, please make sure we have the necessary medications and paperwork from their Dr. in our school health room.
-REMINDERSchool is winding down. Please mark your calendar to pick up your child’s
medications on or before the last day of school or it will be destroyed.
Extra ClothingIf you have any gently used clothing in Middle School student
sizes, the health room would gladly take a few pants, t-shirts, sweatshirts,
sweats, and jackets for their closet.
Thank you!
LOST AND FOUND
Our Lost and Found is OVERFLOWING!
Is your student missing hoodies, tee shirts, coats, lunch boxes… etc?
Chances are they are waiting to be discovered in our ever growing lost and found!
Please remind your students, or come by yourself, to check out the lost and found. At the
end of the year all clothing left behind will be donated.
STUDENT SCHOOL SAFETY…...
Parents as you drop off and pick up your students in the school parking lot,
please be mindful of all the students running out between cars and not looking
for cars in the road. We had a near miss this week and it reminds us to share
with families to put the cell phones down and look around you while you are in
the school zone.
Thank you!
