RIDE with Mark Berger
Sunday, May 3 • 2:00pm
Take a dusty tour of the American West. Musician/
songwriter Marc Berger will celebrate the mythology,
magic, and mystery of our vast frontier with songs from
his album RIDE, which has received national airplay
and is played in Starbucks stores worldwide. Marc
has performed at Austin’s South by Southwest Music
Festival and the Kerrville Folk Festival and has opened
shows for Bob Dylan. He will be accompanied by
D’Raz on accordion and Rich DePaolo on guitar.

Dr. Diane Cypkin will perform love songs made popular
during World War II, including Don’t Sit Under the Apple
Tree, You’ll Never Know, I’ll Walk Alone, A Nightingale
Sang in Berkeley Square, Yours, and Chatanooga Choo
Choo. Learn who created these classic tunes, who
danced and “romanced” to them, and what made them
unforgettable. Dr. Cypkin is a celebrated performer as well
as Professor of Media, Communication, and Visual Arts
at Pace University. She will be accompanied by pianist
Lena Panfilova, a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory.

Come meet your new best friend at our 5th Annual Pet
Adoption Fair in Inside/Out, the Library’s garden extension.
Representatives from over a dozen agencies will be in
attendance with adoptable cats, dogs, and more. This
year, the event will include an Adoptable Pet Fashion
Show at 12:00pm, featuring prizes for the top “models.”
Bring the whole family, and pick out a new addition!
Please do not bring your own pets. Only adoptable animals
from approved agencies are permitted in Inside/Out.

Dennis Schrader and Bill Smith will open the exquisite gardens at their private
home, Landcraft in Mattituck, featuring unusual and exotic varieties of plants
and décor from around the world, incorporating wildflower meadows and a
mosaic of succulents. Lunch will be at the Sound View Inn on the water in
Greenport. After lunch, tour the Horton Point Lighthouse in Southold, constructed
in 1857, one of seven historic lighthouses located in Southold Township.
There will be time to enjoy the grounds and visit the museum and gift
shop. Be prepared to stop at a farm stand or two on the way home!

would like to bring a non-resident guest, call the Welcome Desk to add

TOPIC: What makes a good president?

Exchange ideas with others while engaging in the Socratic practice of
questioning, led this month by local resident Charles Payret. There are over
600 ongoing Socrates Café gatherings around the globe coordinated by
hundreds of dedicated volunteers who are deeply committed to making
ours a more participatory and inclusive world.
Poetry: Verse in Person
Each month a guest poet presents a reading after which the audience is
encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month’s guest is
Elizabeth Sackett, whose writing has appeared in Gandy Dancer. She received
her B.A. in English/Creative Writing from SUNY Geneseo, where she was the
winner of the Lucy Harmon Award for Fiction. Also an actress, Elizabeth runs
a theatre club for middle schoolers. Special thanks to Mankh, member of the
Performance Poets Association, for hosting this series.

mother back into her life is not an easy thing, Alice approaches it with humor, intelligence, and honesty. As it turns out,
it’s entirely possible for the people we’ve lost to come back to us when we need them the most.

How did an addicted ex–con on the verge of suicide become a caring member of the community? With a little help from
a shih tzu named Bruno. James “Head” Guiliani, a confidante of the Gotti regime, was arrested and jailed on a weapons
charge. After his release, he fell back into alcohol and drug addiction—until, one day, he came across an abandoned,
abused dog in the street. DogFella recounts the story of Guiliani’s life, from his involvement in street gangs and the
infamous Gotti crime family to his incarceration and eventual redemption through animal welfare.

At age 24, Frank Lazzaro was hired by Betty
Ford as the White House Christmas Tree
Decorator. For the next 12 years, through
the Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations,
he served as the White House Holiday and
State Dinner Decorator. Frank will share his
experiences and present a photographic tour
of the White House.

The Man and His Music

During the year of Sinatra’s centenary, his
music remains as vital and influential as ever.
Why does his sound endure? Most likely
because of the near-impossibility of separating
Sinatra’s music from his larger-than-life
mystique. Jazz musician and educator Tom
Manuel, Director of Jazz Studies at LIU Post,
will help unravel the man and his music and
explore Sinatra’s long career.

The Chopin Mazurkas

Canine Border Patrol Officers and their canine
partners will conduct a Narcotic and Agriculture
Detector Dog presentation. Only one out of
every one hundred dogs passes the U.S. Border
Patrol selection test and is accepted into the
program. Find out how these dogs defend our
borders by detecting illegal narcotics and
prohibited agricultural items.

Frederic Chopin wrote 52 mazurkas during his
39 years. Ruth Spencer, Lecturer in Music at
City College and the 92nd Street Y, will perform
about a dozen of these mazurkas, some of
which are barely a minute long. Ms. Spencer
has done research on the famed composer in
Paris, Poland, and Majorca. The performance
will begin with a talk on Chopin’s life, featuring
photos of places where he lived and worked.

Therapy animals visit hospitals and nursing
homes, assist with reading programs at schools
and libraries, and provide stress relief at
colleges and universities. Tom Tulipan of
Pet Partners, who brings his pets to Sachem
Library’s “Book Time with a Dog” program,
will discuss the process of having your pet
evaluated and registered as a therapy animal.
Find out which breeds and personality traits
are preferred, which organizations can evaluate
your pet, and receive a step-by-step

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the
film, James Kolb, Ph.D., Professor of Drama at
Hofstra University, will discuss Rodgers and
Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. Though
it won five Tony Awards in 1960, the show’s
ongoing popularity can be traced to the
celebrated 1965 film version starring Julie
Andrews, which won five Academy Awards.
This presentation will look at both the stage
and film versions of this enduring classic.

Bursting Forth
The Bell Street Artists, founded in 1973, is a collective comprised
of distinguished artists working throughout Suffolk County.
Members promote arts education by providing demonstrations
to elementary school students, serving as mentors to local

area and has generated scholarships for hundreds of talented

Summer Reading Club Preview
Registration for all teen summer programs begins
on Saturday, June 6 at 9:30am online or by phone
only. The summer program brochure will be
available online and in Teen Services beginning
mid-May. Programs are open to those who are
entering grades 6-12 in September. You will need a
teen library card to register. If you are entering
grade 6 in the fall, you can update to a teen library
card by coming to the Library with a parent or
guardian beginning May 15.
Registration for this summer’s teen reading club “Unmask” starts on Saturday, June 20.

Battle of the Books
If you love to read and are entering grades 6-9 in

team for the annual Suffolk County Battle of the
Books. Read the selected eight titles, come to

the players to represent Sachem Public Library in
the county competition. The titles for this year
will be announced on May 15. The county
competition is scheduled for Saturday, August 1
at Stony Brook University.
