C.A.R.E. / The John 3:16 Center 2nd Quarter VOLUME 11 ISSUE 2 A Note From the Director Board of Directors Hello, everyone! Dr. Doug Kolb, Chairman Bob Roegner, Vice Chairman Mary More, Secretary Jacquelyn Copeland, Treasurer Alfred Riddick Algernon Alston Jodie Dowhan Spring has arrived! I love this time of year—seeing the plants begin to grow and bloom again, enjoying time in the warm sunshine, fishing (yes, I know you can fish when it’s cold… but I don’t!), starting a fruit & vegetable garden with our afterschool children with the support of KIPP’s Youth of Extraordinary Spirits grant, and celebrating the Resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He provides the purpose for all we do at The John 3:16 Center. This time of year also brings sobering thoughts: April is Child Abuse Prevention month and we “planted” our pinwheel garden this year in memory of the 25 children who died at the hands of a parent or caregiver in 2013. There are links to more child abuse & neglect statistics as well as an online prevention training contained in this newsletter. Fred Gasko Sidney Shearin Rev. In the following pages, you’ll see information about: Volunteer Appreciation Day, GED classes, Kid’s Carnival, our Fundraising Golf Tournament and Yard Sale, and Camp J316! In addition, our new basketball posts are finally up, so we will be scheduling a meeting with those who want to play basketball here. We want to go over some rules of use and have them help put up the backboards, hoops, and nets. If you know someone who has been hoping we’d get our court set back up, have them contact us soon! I know there will be those who will want to have access afterhours through the summer—if you’re willing to volunteer to make this possible, let us know and we will schedule a training! If you have volunteered at The John 3:16 Center in the past year, PLEASE come by for our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon 11am-1pm on April 17th. We hope we made you feel appreciated when you volunteered, but this is just another opportunity for us to serve you and express how grateful we are for your assistance, without which we would not be able to provide the services and opportunities that we currently do. Just let us know you plan to come by Wednesday evening, so that we can ensure we are prepared. Thank you for all the support you provide to The John 3:16 Center. We appreciate the various forms of donations, acts of service—like the tree planted by the Gardening Club, and the prayers you offer up for us and those we serve. Please consider sponsoring a child for Camp J316, volunteering to help with one of our fundraisers, or enjoying some time on our playground and walking trail. Pray for us as we continue to serve God in this community. GED Update MaryAnn Whittemore "Spring semester GED class is going along despite the low numbers. The concern is always there of class cancellation when numbers are below five. Right now, three are attending regularly. I am in contact with three others, but for various reasons, they cannot attend, mostly due to transportation issues. The lack of public transportation continues to be the number one problem with potential students coming to class. A big thank you to Lynn Lassister and Cynthia Fowler from St. Alban's Episcopal Church and Bob and Nancy Roegner for stepping up and taking one of the students home on Tuesday and Thursday class days. If there is someone else who would be able to give about 45 minutes of their time one afternoon a week, please contact me at The John 3:16 Center on Tuesday or Thursday between 11am and 3pm. I have mentioned in past newsletters the changing face of the 2014 GED. First, it is all done on computers; second, it is much more contextual than the 2000 GED; third, it costs more money ($30.00 each for the 4 subject areas) that must be paid via computer using a credit or debit card. This presents a problem for several of the students. Good news? There are only 4 tests, instead of the original 5, the reading and writing tests have been combined into one called "Reasoning through Language Arts”. So, for the four tests, it is $120, instead of $150. More good news? Working to put a scholarship in place to help students pay for the tests who cannot afford the costs and/or do not have credit/debit cards. Just like with the old version, there are official practice tests; however, now they cost $6. Therefore, the entire cost to students to complete the practice test and GED is$144. Again, please do not hesitate to come in and find out more about the new GED tests." 4 CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH Child abuse is PREVENTABLE! FACT: July 2013-June 2014: 1,165 cases of abuse and neglect 910 cases of abuse 8,335 cases of neglect 25 children died at the hand of a parent or caregiver in North Carolina in 2013; 2014 data is not yet available (Prevent Child Abuse NC).
