Science Faculty Ethos
All students deserve the opportunity to achieve their best in Science. We aim to provide an
excellent educational experience which exposes students to stimulating Science at an
appropriate level at key stages 3 & 4 as well as AS/A level.

In September 2004 we moved to a brand new school. For the Science Faculty this means 12
fully fitted Science labs each with networked facilities and an ICT lab with PC access for data
logging. There are 3 large preparation rooms. Whiteboard and mobile laptops and data
projectors in each lab are also available for teaching. There is also a dedicated Science ICT suite.
All staff are expected to be prepared to teach the full range of Science at KS3 and a number of
staff are able to offer other subjects at KS4. Many science staff also have whole school
responsibilities.
Teaching and Learning
Science teaching is constantly evolving and we keep our curriculum under constant review to
meet the needs of our students.
In Years 7 and 8, students follow a skills based themed curriculum. When they enter Year 7,
they are taught Science as form groups, following the unique STEM course. Following tests and
internal teacher assessments students are set into Year 8 and then further into Year 9 as the key
stage progresses. In Year 9 students are taught GCSE content on a rota with subject specialists
in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
In Years 10 & 11, most students follow WJEC ‘Science A Core’ and ‘Additional’ Science leading to
double award GCSE. In Year 10 and 11 modules are taught by subject specialists. Some
students opt for Triple Science leading to three separate GCSE’s in Biology, Chemistry and
Physics. The remaining students follow the vocational ‘IVQ Applied Science’ course, which also
leads to a double award GCSE equivalent qualification in Science. The faculty aims to enter
every student for a suitable course.
A levels (and equivalent courses) are offered in all Science subjects. Courses we offer are WJEC
Biology, WJEC Chemistry, WJEC Physics, WJEC Geology as well as WJEC BTEC Applied Science.
Science subjects are popular choices at AS and A level. Staff are committed to raising student
achievement and are constantly looking for ways to enhance learning. We are currently working
on revisions to the schemes of work, greater use of ICT, baseline assessment, student tracking
throughout KS3 and 4 and the future Science courses for September 2016. The new member of
staff will have ample opportunity to contribute to these and other developments and especially
to leading developments of a skills based Science curriculum.
This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a successful team at a crucial time of change, in
developing a skills-based flexible curriculum. The person appointed should be able to
demonstrate a vision and the ability to build on success already achieved.
