They can’t fly or jump, but crawl very quickly up and down the hair shaft. This means they can easily spread from direct head-to-head contact, or by sharing items that touch the head. Head lice are insects that feed on human blood to survive, and stay close to the scalp for warmth. While they do feed on blood, head lice do not spread diseases in the same manner as fleas, ticks and body lice (pediculus humanus). Though they are annoying, head lice don’t pose any serious health threat. Got head lice? Isopropyl myristate dissolves the waxy coating on the lice, causing water loss from their body. Once they lose this protective layer, the lice dehydrate, become immobile and die in as little as 10 minutes. ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ® Registered trademark of Nycomed Canada Inc. 1◊ ◊A second treatment is recommended 7 to 10 days after the initial application to kill any newly hatched lice.
