ANTIGUA
Greetings!
I am delighted to present to you the first
edition of our new look Voyages brochure,
containing an exciting programme for our very
special tall ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious.
After 35 years, the JST remains globally unique
in providing life-changing adventures to people
of all ages, backgrounds and levels of physical
ability. With an amazing history behind us,
we are focused on building an equally exciting
future. We want to build on the outstanding
Sail The World legacy, which saw Lord Nelson
circumnavigate the globe, returning home
last September. This feat has proved that we
have the capability to operate internationally
and explore new parts of the world. It helped
clarify that there are numerous high potential
markets that have demand for our work,
meaning we can expand our reach and
impact further than ever before.
With this backdrop, I am excited to announce that
Tenacious – in her 15th birthday year – will set sail
for Australia in November. She will depart from
Southampton, navigate the Panama Canal in
January and sail down to Australia via the islands
of the tropical South Pacific.
Our arrival in Sydney in July 2016 marks the
beginning of an exciting new phase in the history
of the Trust. As we do at home, we have a very
strong group of core supporters in Australia and
we have taken the strategic decision to set up a
long-term operational presence in the region.
Operating more globally will help to create
exciting new voyage programmes, make our
adventures available to new crews, increase our
fundraising potential and make the Trust more
attractive to corporate and other partners.
We will, of course, continue to service our
UK and European markets with a range of
voyages closer to home. We are complementing
Tenacious’ Pacific passage down to Australia
with an exciting Lord Nelson programme taking
in delightful voyages around Madeira and the
Canary Islands.
I very much look forward to welcoming you
on-board our vessels sometime soon!
Best wishes, on and off the water.

TALL STORIES
Pioneers of the sea
The Jubilee Sailing
Trust was founded in
1978 when the charity
ran a pilot scheme that
included voyages in
square-rigged vessels the
Marques, TS Royalist and
Søren Larsen. Since then,
over 40,000 people have
sailed with the Jubilee
Sailing Trust – over 28,000
on Lord Nelson, and
13,000 on Tenacious.
T
he Jubilee Sailing Trust own and operate
two globally unique square rigged tall
ships – Lord Nelson and Tenacious – which
have been custom built so they can be sailed by
crews with a wide variety of physical abilities.
For over 35 years, the Jubilee Sailing Trust have
provided life-changing adventures for crews
of all ages, backgrounds and levels of physical
ability. Over 40,000 people have sailed with
the Trust, around half of whom have had some
sort of physical disability, including over 5,000
wheelchair users.
September 2015 marks the 15th anniversary
of Tenacious’ maiden voyage, which will be
commemorated by a month of events in
Southampton and London.
Our ships are full of features that help people
with physical disabilities or sensory impairments
to take a full and active part in sailing and other
activities on-board. Features include: wide decks
for ease of movement; lifts between deck levels;
audio compass; power-assisted steering; signage
in braille; guidance tracks; tactile stair strips and
raised directional arrows on handrails.
SPACIOUS ACCOMMODATION, GREAT FOOD
DONATE NOW We continuously fundraise to ensure that more
people have access to this life-changing experience. All voyage crew spaces are
subsidised through our fundraising efforts. If you would like to donate please
visit www.jst.org.uk or contact the Fundraising Team on +44 (0)23 8042 6868
Lord Nelson (right) and Tenacious were
both specially commissioned by the
Jubilee Sailing Trust to give adventurers
the chance to experience life on board a
tall ship and to enjoy the challenges and
camaraderie of the sea
Accommodation on board both ships is spacious
and comfortable. There are fixed bunks in the
forecastle, also known as the ‘fo’c’sle’, and
wheelchair users and voyage crew who require
buddies have separate cabins.
JST.ORG.UK
The first JST ship
Both ships have heating and air conditioning,
hot showers and electric points for toothbrushes,
shavers and hair dryers. There is a large mess area
where freshly prepared meals are served, and a
bar where you can relax with a drink after a hard
day’s sailing.
A good meal makes everyone happy – which is
why we employ only the best cooks to feed you
while on your voyage. We only serve high quality
food on board our ships and strive to source the
freshest local ingredients wherever in the world
we are. We’ve haggled with fisherman off the
coast of India, caught tuna and mackerel from
behind the ship, headed off to the local markets
in South Africa, and prepared mouth-watering
BBQs in the Med. We serve our crew three
hearty meals a day, plus freshly baked cakes
and biscuits during daily smoko (morning and
afternoon breaks) so you will never go hungry
on a JST voyage.
Lord Nelson – named
after the world’s most
famous disabled sailor,
Admiral Horatio Lord
Nelson – was the first
vessel commissioned by
JST and took two years
to build. On 17 October
1986 she sailed out of
Southampton on her
maiden voyage.
Dawn of a new era
Demand for voyages
grew, so in 1993 the JST
designed and built a
second ship. Tenacious
is the largest wooden
hulled tall ship to be
made since the end of the
19th century and sailed
on her first voyage 1,548
days after her keel was
laid, on 1 September 2000
from Southampton.

The camaraderie of ship life
means firm friendships are formed
KYLE’S STORY
How the JST has helped
to rebuild confidence
Kyle Baker from Cheshire has sailed
with the JST on both Tenacious and
Lord Nelson. Kyle was a member
of the Rifles, an infantry regiment
within the British Army, and he
was severely injured in 2009 whilst
serving in Afghanistan.
“Sailing with the JST is a special
experience, no matter what your
physical disability. Everyone is
classed the same while on board,
so you feel like you have some self
worth… it really increases your
confidence. After I got shot I didn’t
like large groups of people but when
you’re on a tall ship with 40 other
people, with nowhere to go, you
get to know everyone as you’re
always together. Your confidence
levels increase.”
Regimental Casualty Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Mike Smith says,
“We find sailing with the Jubilee
Sailing Trust incredibly beneficial for
those young men who have been
seriously injured in operations in Iraq
and Afghanistan, who are spending
a long time at home feeling isolated,
losing their self confidence, losing
the ability to integrate socially… the
Jubilee Sailing Trust addresses all of
these issues.”
Kyle, who plans to continue
sailing with the JST, says, “I really
enjoy interacting with people of all
ages and backgrounds which is so
unlike everyday life. I would suggest
getting on board to everyone,
especially those returning from
service in the army.”
“I
really enjoyed meeting so many different people,” says
Jayne, a voyage crew member who recently sailed on
Tenacious: “This was a wonderful adventure and an
exciting experience. I would recommend it to anyone, no
matter their ability or confidence level.”
A voyage with the Jubilee Sailing Trust is not only about
getting out to sea, exploring the world and learning how to
sail a tall ship, it is also about the people you will meet and
friendships you will build along the way.
On our tall ships, you will meet some remarkable people.
Trainee voyage crew from all walks of life are brought together
to experience a unique sailing adventure – from managing
directors to students, from teenagers to retirees, from wheelchair
users to marathon runners, all are in the same
boat (excuse the pun) when on board our ships.
Everyone is equal, barriers are broken down and
you will build friendships based upon equality
and mutual understanding.
On board our ships you are put in to a watch
(the team you work with to run the ship) and
these people become your ‘family’ while on
board. You eat, sleep, laugh, sail, explore, learn,
discover… together. And because of this you will
make friends for life.

CREATING UNIQUE BONDS
Sailing a unique tall ship will bond you in a way
that no other activity can. Teamwork is key, and
every person in your watch is just as vital as the
next. You will realise not only how important
your fellow voyage crew are in the successful
running of the ship, but you will also learn how
important your role is in that team.
You will make friends for life while on
board, and saying goodbye at the end of a
voyage can be hard, but the friendships you
make and memories you take away with you,
will last forever.
Get on board one of our voyages and
make lifelong friends. Go to page 4 for full
voyage listings.
Working together and sharing close
quarters means making friends is
inevitable on a JST voyage

Sailor Andy rediscovered
camaraderie on the seas
Royal Australian Navy sailor Andy
joined Lord Nelson in September
2013, to sail from Hobart to Sydney.
“On sailing day, thousands braved
the conditions along the foreshores
in Hobart and a flotilla of vessels
escorted us as we set off,” he recalls.
“The ship had just weathered 24
hours of south-westerly storms on
her passage from Hobart to Sydney,
and despite sea-sickness, sleep
deprivation and a massive angle of
heel, we had brought her through
– and discovered something about
ourselves in the process.”
The experience turned a disparate
group of individuals who had
clambered over Nellie’s gangway a
few days earlier into a hard-nosed
ship’s crew. Five words became the
their catch-cry: “We sailed across
Bass Strait!”
On 3 October, Nellie and the other
16 tall ships reached the rendezvous
point off Sydney Heads. As all 17
ships entered Sydney, with crowds
gathering on the shores to welcome
them, the crew agreed they were
part of a very special piece of history.
“We shared experiences never to
be forgotten,” says Andy. “It was
marvellous to see people of all ages
and walks of life don their safety
harnesses and go aloft as casually
as boarding a train.” Andy feels the
experience was not just inspirational
– it was truly life changing. “I have a
completely different view of disabled
people,” he says.

Tenacious will then depart for some
impressive South Pacific voyages.
Sailing the same trade winds as
explorers of years gone by, she will be
calling into some real desert island
locations, including the gorgeous
Bora Bora, Pitcairn Island and Tahiti.
With a long and rich history,
Tahiti has been a popular stopover
for many famous explorers, due to
its indigenous flora and fauna. This
island was made even more famous
by the legendary mutiny aboard
HMS Bounty in the 1700s. The crew
wanted to live a life of paradise
on the island, so overthrew their
Captain to achieve their dream. Why
not fulfil your dreams of paradise on
one of our Pacific Island adventures?
Departing from her home port of Southampton, Tenacious
will embark on an epic ocean passage to the beautiful Caribbean.
Setting sail across the Atlantic, we will voyage through the
volcanic Canary Islands before catching the north-east trade
winds and heading on to the 10-island archipelago of Cape Verde.
Situated 500km off the coast of Africa, these beautiful islands
are known as the ‘African Caribbean’ and we will enjoy a few days
exploring them, before preparing for an epic passage across the
Atlantic and into the crystal waters of the Caribbean.
The Caribbean is a firm favourite among sailors. With its
breathtaking islands, white sandy beaches, and excellent sailing
conditions, our voyages in the Caribbean Sea are a must for all
those who love the thrill of the water.

From Antigua we will be setting sail for Central America.
Navigating our way across the Caribbean Sea, calling into the ABC
Isles and the San Blas Islands, we will then take part in the JST’s
first ever voyage through the Panama Canal.
A passage through the Panama Canal is on many sailors’
bucket lists. A miraculous engineering feat, and one of the most
significant waterways in the world, the Panama Canal is a magnet
for keen sailors and nature lovers alike. Stretching 49 miles and
surrounded by the beauty of the region’s many national parks, a
voyage through the Panama Canal is a stunning sight. Keep your
eyes peeled for a crocodile or two lounging along the banks – these
incredible creatures frequent the canal all year round.
Arriving in Balboa, a district of Panama City, we will then set
sail on some amazing voyages discovering the coastlines of
Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Spectacular rainforests,
impressive volcanoes and picture-perfect beaches await you on
an unforgettable adventure discovering the coastlines of these
Central American countries.
We also have a special voyage for all the nature lovers. Costa
Rica offers some of the most divine landscapes in the world,
and is home to 500,000 species of wildlife, making it one of
the most biodiverse countries in the world. Spending five days
exploring the coastline of this stunning country really will leave
you awe-struck. Waving goodbye to spectacular Central America,

RICH IN NAVAL HISTORY
From Tahiti, we will be sailing to the breathtaking island of Fiji.
Shaped over 35 centuries, Fiji became well known to European
sailors in the 18th century. Legend has it that when Captain
Cook visited in the 1700s, he asked the locals of neighbouring
island Tonga what the island’s name was. He heard ‘feegee’,
which was the Tongan pronunciation of Viti (the island’s
precolonial name), and so Fiji was born.
Described by many as nirvana, Fiji’s tropical islands offer
colourful reefs, sensational sailing and palm-fringed beaches –
and what better way to discover paradise than from the decks
of a tall ship? We will then be setting sail across the Pacific
visiting Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Lord Howe, before arriving
at the Tasman Sea. Named after the famous Dutch explorer
Abel Tasman, this is an exciting and challenging stretch of water
that will appeal to intrepid sailing adventurers.
After an exhilarating 32-day voyage, Tenacious will arrive in
the iconic Sydney Harbour. This is Tenacious’ first visit to the
land Down Under, and she will be embarking on some amazing
voyages discovering the Australian coastline – the first being
along the stunning Sapphire Coast to the capital of the state
of Victoria, Melbourne. Make sure you are one of the lucky
sailors on board!

MAGICAL MADEIRA
Lord Nelson will be visiting the island of Madeira on two of
her voyages this winter. Nicknamed the ‘Pearl of the Atlantic’
because of its stunning scenery, this island is one of the
most captivating destinations in Europe.
Madeira is a dramatic volcanic island, and is an
autonomous region of Portugal, although it is actually
situated closer to Africa than mainland Europe. We will
spend some time exploring the pretty capital, Funchal,
which is made up of beautiful colonial buildings and quaint
cobbled streets. Take time to enjoy its famous colourful
gardens, then sample the local wine and cuisine in the cafes
and family-run tavernas of the old town and marina. With
its impressive mountainous backdrop, subtropical climate

EXPERIENCE EXCITING SAILING
ACROSS THE BAY OF BISCAY
Ben, aged 17 from Bournemouth, was a
typical teenager. Despite getting good
GCSE grades, he dropped out of college
and thought about getting a job, but
never did. He says: “I didn’t really do
much with my life. I got in the cycle of
lying in bed till 2pm then doing nothing
– it was the most unmotivated I had
ever been.”
Ben’s mother found out about the
JST. “When I was told about the voyage
I wasn’t fussed – I just didn’t care.
Eventually I got tired of mum nagging
me and said I would go.” Ben flew to
Gibraltar to meet Tenacious in April
2014. He was nervous just before he
flew out, but says: “After arriving, it
was amazing! I quickly figured out
you have to socialise with people on
the ship. It was talking to people and
learning their stories that really made
the trip for me. Also, for the first time
in my life, everyone treated me like an
adult. For example, before when I used
to meet someone I would just look at
them, but on board I was greeted with
a handshake.”
The voyage also increased Ben’s
confidence through a combination
of teamwork, meeting new people
and being given responsibility. He
says: “Before I left I had no idea
what I wanted to do in life – now I
know exactly what I want to do. My
voyage has really changed me and
motivated me. I have now gone back
to college to study towards my goal of
becoming a property developer.”

CORPORATE VOYAGES
For the past 35 years, we have
been providing life changing
adventures to people of all ages,
backgrounds and levels of
physical ability from across the
world. Now, we would like staff
from your business to be the crew
that changes lives!
A JST voyage is an effective,
innovative and socially
responsible vehicle for helping
businesses enrich their culture,
strengthen staff collaboration
and improve client engagement.
They can do this by joining
us as crew on-board our two
special tall ships, Lord Nelson
and Tenacious, and fundraising
to sponsor a ‘buddy’ from a
targeted charity of your choice.
For example, this could be a local
disability group or a military
rehabilitation organisation.
Together, they will go on
an exciting, never-to-forget
adventure, which could be
from one to five days in duration.
During the voyage, staff will be
challenged to do things they
never thought possible, like
climb a 100ft mast, helm a tall
ship or work with their fellow
mixed ability crew mates to set
over a square kilometre of sail.
A unique experience like
this will help to strengthen
your team and bring your
organisation closer to the
communities it serves.
Illustrating this, international
law firm Norton Rose
Fulbright recently won the
Global Legal Awards Corporate
Responsibility Initiative of
the Year, following their
collaboration with the Jubilee
Sailing Trust.
Alternatively, our ships also
make unique and memorable
hospitality venues, so why
not host your next team
meeting, company party, or
client event aboard one of our
spectacular vessels?
SCHOOLS AND YOUTH VOYAGES
A voyage with the JST offers
education opportunities in a
unique outdoor setting, and
helps to promote key life skills
including leadership, teamwork,
communication, self-esteem, selfawareness and confidence.
Our two very special tall ships,
Lord Nelson and Tenacious,
have been custom designed to
accommodate people of all physical
abilities, including those with a
range of disabilities, and we have a
dedicated team of sailing specialists
who have extensive skills and
expertise to teach students about
sail training. The unique challenge
and adventure of tall ship sailing,
along with the opportunity to
work as part of a mixed ability
crew, makes a JST voyage a unique,

very tangible way to accelerate
personal development, improve
social awareness and strengthen
core skills. The experience gained
on a JST voyage can help strengthen
university or job applications, and
would be particularly valuable for
aspiring medics, as this presents a
rare opportunity to work directly
with those who have disabilities,
or for people seeking employment
with international businesses,
where diversity awareness may be
central to their recruiting strategy.
A JST voyage with a duration of
five days or over is also accredited
for Duke of Edinburgh Award Gold
Residential. A JST voyage is also
an excellent way to meet schools’
curriculum requirements for Key
Stages 3 and 4.
