Nice to see so many of you at the convention. It is always nice to visit with friends
and members of the Lincoln Repeater Club.
We are still taking memberships. If you
know of anybody who would like to join,
please tell them about our repeater.
Don’t forget to get your 2Ø15 LRC Raffle Tickets for the exciting Yaesu FT-1900R
Mobile 55-watt radio. Raffle tickets are
only $2 each or 3 for $5, and this is one
smoking hot VHF mobile (see below).
We encourage you to become a member
of the Lincoln Repeater Club. Our annual
dues are low, and you help to support the
operations and maintenance of our local VHF
repeater with UHF links as well as a phone
patch and EchoLink® capabilities.
We encourage you to use our repeater as
much as you like and, as always, it is an open
repeater. If your part of the hobby would
like to hold nets on the repeater, please contact me, Lonnie, WDØAOP, at
[email protected], or one of our Board members, and we will get your net reserved, advertised, and “on the air.”
When you join or renew your membership, you help support the Lincoln Repeater
Club. When you attend monthly LARC
meetings, see Chris, KCØAOO. If you can’t
attend the Club meetings, remember that we
still do “Snail Mail.”

Thank you for your support.
Well, we tried a hunt using
a mobile fox. A few challenges
were noted: The fox had four
hiding points, but the first was
too close to the starting point,
resulting in the fox’s being found in less than
15 minutes from the start at his second point.
He continued to hide, reaching his third
point, and he was found again. His fourth
point still remains a secret.
Typically, we ended the first hiding session when the fox was found by the second
hunter. This gives the first finder of the first
fox time to hide. In this hunt, we had five
hunters, and even the last hunter wanted to
find the fox, since he had already invested
his time and gas. Hunters 1 thru 4 agreed
with this idea for a reasonable period of time;
but some became anxious about having to
twiddle their thumbs until the final hunter
found the fox. And yes, I know, you can’t
please everybody all of the time.
We will correct and adjust for these issues in May, when we’ll feature one more
fox hunt on the move. We’ll also feature a
team hunt. Be sure to jot down the dates.
May Hunt Dates:
Saturday, May 16, a team hunt, at 7:00 PM,
meeting at Best Buy, 70th & O Sts.
Saturday, May 30, an expert hunt (roaming
fox) at 7:00 PM, meeting at the Mobil station, NW 20th & West O Sts.

How to Access FCC Account
If Your Password Is Lost
When the FCC assigned your FCC Registration Number (FRN), an FCC account
was automatically created so that you may
file all license maintenance issues online.
You should have received an account password from the FCC. If you did not receive
the password, or simply can't find it, here are
the steps to create a new password and gain
access to your account.
1. Enter “http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls” in
your internet browser. (Takes you to ULS
main page.)
2. Under the ONLINE FILING—LOG IN
area you will see the words “Forgot Password?” Click your mouse button on “Forgot
Password?”
3. On the next screen enter your 10-digit
FRN and click on “Continue”
4. On the next screen click on “Create your
PSQ” or “Reset your PSQ” (Personal Security Question).
5. The next screen requires that you enter a
lot of information as well as a new PSQ. Be
sure all info is correct, as well as a valid email address. When finished, submit the
form.
One to three days later you will receive
an e-mail stating that your PSQ has been reset. In the e-mail, click on the link “FRN
Password Reset.” Enter your FRN and PSQ
answer. Now you must change your password.
Create a password 8-15 characters long.
The first character must be a capital letter.
Sprinkle in some numbers to make it more
difficult to hack. Record your new password
and PSQ answer and put it in a safe place; on
the back of your current license hanging on
your Ham Shack wall should do.
What can you do with your FCC license
account?
All Technician and General License holders should reset the box to have the FCC send
a hard copy of new license upgrades. Additionally, all form 605 applications can now be
made by you online. These include license
renewals as well as address changes, vanity
calls, etc.
If you don't have an FRN (should be
printed on your current license), do Step 1
above and find the link “New Users - Register.”

State Games of America
Dates
The Games will be held July 28—
August 2. At this point it looks as if all
the events that will need Ham volunteers
will be held August 1 and 2. So, just one
weekend this year.
Opening Ceremonies
We will not be helping with Opening
Ceremonies this year since they will be
held at Memorial Stadium.
Games Update
As of April 27, 1,829 participants are
registered and 43 states (plus the District
of Columbia) represented. The bulk of
the registrations are still coming. The cutoff for out-of-state participants to register
is July 1.
Signage
For those who have struggled to locate an event, this will be good news. The
SGA (State Games of America) office is
working hard to ensure that all events
have visible signage to make locating
events far easier than it has been in the
past. This will include banners, "feathers"
and other forms of signs.
Events
We have worked with the Games office to identify the sports/events most in
need of communication support. As a result, only the most critical sports (high
priority) events are currently available for
volunteering. The goal is that as the critical events fill up, we will open up the less
critical events for additional volunteers.
Current List of Events
• Adventure Race
◦ Mahoney State Park.
• Aquatics Open Swim / Road Race
◦ Holmes Lake Park.
◦ The Road Race is taking the place of
the Energy Runs of other years and will
include an additional 10-mile run.
• Cycling / Mountain Bike
◦ Platte River State Park.
◦ Rough terrain; must be able to hike.
• Cycling / Gravel Grinder
◦ Roca Berry Farm.
◦ This was a new event last year. This
will be the first year for us to support it.
• Cycling / Cycle Tour
◦ Fallbrook to Branched Oak.
◦ A new course for this year.
• Triathlon
◦ Holmes Lake Park.
• Lunch Pickup / Prep Crew
◦ The Prep Crew is open to non-hams.
• Lunch Delivery Drivers
• General Volunteer
◦ If you are still figuring out your
schedule or just want to be placed where
you are needed most, sign up here.
◦ There are openings for morning and
afternoon.
◦ Most major events are scheduled for
the morning.
◦ If you do not see an event you are interested in, feel free to sign up as a General Volunteer. We will contact you as
we get closer to find where and when you
can help out.

Coordinators
We are also looking for people to
help coordinate the different events, as
we did last year. If you are interested in
coordinating, please let me know.
Registration:
This year all volunteers with the State
Games of America must register with the
State Games office. In addition to making
it possible to get to the event you are volunteering for, it will give you a pass to all
events (many events will have an entrance fee this year), T-shirt, and lunch.

April LOG Mail Prep
Did You Know?
By John Mardock, KRØP
Margaret, the CK722
was the first low-cost germanium PNP junction
transistor available to the
general public. In 1953
the CK722 sold for $7.60
each—about $65 in today’s dollars. The
CK722 was a reject CK721. The CK721
was a reject from the production of the
CK718 hearing aid transistor. In other
words the CK718 had a better gain than
a CK721, and the CK721 had better gain
than the CK722. The CK718 had lower
noise as well. Seems like $65 was a lot of
money for a reject (of a reject) transistor!
Bet you did not know that Raytheon’s
Norman Krim, the designer of the
CK722, had a soft spot in his heart for
Radio Shack. Radio Shack was selected
to sell the CK722 to the general public.
Margaret, times sure have changed.

activities.

VE Exams in Lincoln
VE Exams in Lincoln are generally
held the first Thursday of each month at
Northside Café, 2701 North 48th St., at
6:30 PM. Sometimes holidays interfere
with the usual date, so the exam is held
the second Thursday. The next VE Exams
in Lincoln will be May 7, June 4, and
July 9. NOTE: July 9 is the second Thursday in July. I thought the first Thursday,
July 2, is too close to Saturday, July 4 and
may be somewhat inconvenient.
The exam fee is $15. A picture ID, or
two IDs without pictures, is required. If
you are trying for an upgrade, please
bring your original license and a copy
that we can keep to send in with the paperwork. If you just recently passed the
Technician exam or upgraded and have
not yet received your license or seen the
license posted on the FCC Website,
please bring a copy of your CSCE that we
can send in with the paperwork. If you
have an FCC Registration Number
(FRN), please bring it also. The FRN is
required on all recent FCC licenses and
applications, not just on our Amateur licenses.
As the default, the FCC no longer
mails a paper license, but it does send out
an email so you can print a paper license.
So, that makes it very important to provide a legible email address on the Form
605 application. If you do not have an
email address, the FCC does provide a
procedure to print your license via the
ULS License Manager, but an email address is somewhat easier. You can also
reset the FCC’s ULS default so that the
FCC will provide official authorizations
on paper. Go to: https://wireless2.fcc.
gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp to get
started with the ULS License Manager.
Thank you to KØKPH and KØGND;
on an “as available basis,” KØKPH provides catalogs from Ham Radio Outlet
and KØGND provides LOGs to new and
old Hams at the sessions.
Expired Licenses
The FCC has made it possible for a
Ham to receive his or her old class license, if it has expired more than two
years ago, without taking the General or
Extra exam. You must attend a VE Session, pay the current exam fee ($15), and
have at least a Technician Class license
to qualify for the General or Amateur
Extra upgrade that you used to have. If
you don’t have a current Technician license, you must pass the Technician exam at a VE Session to be upgraded to
your old license.
You must provide the proof that you
originally had the General, Advanced, or
Extra license and provide a copy of the
proof for the team to turn in with the
Form 605. The license will be a “new”
issue, so you will receive a sequential
call sign, not your original call sign.
Since the Advanced Class is no longer

issued, a General Class license will be
issued for the expired Advanced. The
Novice Class is no longer available unless it expired within the last two years.
If your license is within the two-year
grace period, you can simply renew your
license through the FCC. And, of course,
the original call sign will be maintained
and the Advanced and Novice Class licenses can be renewed.

It rained.
Hams met at the Elementary School in
Eagle for the Spring Fling Bike Ride. Initially, the Hams outnumbered the bikers
by a ratio of 13:1. The local radio station
reported that the bike ride was cancelled,
but the racers didn’t get that message.
And it rained.
As the hams got to their locations on
the route between Eagle and Louisville,
the rain moderated to a constant mist, and
the wind was chilly. In our cars, with the
heaters running, we didn’t envy the 55
bikers who rode to or from the starting
points. We watched bikers taking selfies
by the wind-blown Great Plains Bicycle
Club flag.
The sun never really came out to help
warm up the Hams or the athletes, but that
didn’t stop anyone from enjoying a brat or
two at the finish line!
