TRE ORE GOOD FRIDAY
April 3 - Noon-3:00PM
Church
Tre Ore or “Three Hours” refers to the three hours that Christ hung on the Cross on that first Good
Friday. We will begin with Stations of the Cross at 11:30a.m., and Tre Ore will be from Noon to 3:00p.m.,
preceding our 3:00p.m. Good Friday Service. COME WHEN YOU CAN, LEAVE WHEN YOU MUST.
Ascension’s Tre Ore service is a form of Devotion to Christ in honor of His three hours of Agony for us. It
includes the Way of the Cross at 11:30a.m., Reflections on the Seven Last Words of Christ, along with
appropriate hymns, music and periods for silent meditation. Feel free to bring your Bibles, and any other
devotional items that you may like to enhance your prayer time. Let us gather at the foot of the cross and
allow Christ’s seven last statements from the cross to speak directly to our hearts.

kind contribution of $4,213.00. As you can probably guess
it is impossible to send a thank you note to everyone who
contributes to our work. That does not mean your kindness
is appreciated any less. Daily we pray for you, our
benefactors. We especially remember you at prayer and
daily Mass.

not alone and there are others that are going through
similar situations or have in the past. That is why we will

The annual “Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land”
will be taken in all parishes on Friday, April 3. All
Christians are united in a special way during Holy Week
and Easter. Christians in the Holy Land continue to suffer
from the effects of war and religious hatred. The daily
news reminds us of the violence and instability plaguing
the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking
Christian community there, a community struggling to
remain in the land of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection.
Please help support our brothers and sisters in the Holy
Land by giving to this special Good Friday Collection. This
pontifical collection allows the Franciscans, custodians of
the Holy Land for over 800 years, to continue caring for
Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s people in the Holy
Land. For more information about Holy Land Christian
issues, visit www.holysepulchre.net/holyland/index.html.
Please be generous in your support to sustain Christianity
in the Holy Land.

WEEKLY PRAYER
Palm Sunday
With Friends Like These…
Banns of Matrimony
This year, we hear the Passion from the gospel of Mark.
One thing unique about this reading is the emphasis on
Jesus being abandoned by his disciples. First, the leaders of
the disciples, Peter, James, and John, cannot even support
Jesus in his agony in the garden: They fall asleep, three
times. Then there is Judas, who seeks out the chief priests
to make a deal with them, Peter, who denies Jesus three
times, and the disciples who flee when he is arrested. The
crowds who cried, “Hosanna!” a few days before, now call
for him to be crucified. Even Simon the Cyrenian had to be
forced to help carry the cross.
What does this tell us? With friends like these, who needs
enemies? No, the point is that Jesus died specifically for
these people, not because they were once friends, but
because they were sinners, who needed Jesus. All but one
of them ended up as saints. And the one who didn’t was
Judas, who gave up on Jesus, instead of coming back to
him for forgiveness. When we find ourselves in sin, when
we think that everything we do is wrong, or when we think
we can’t possibly deserve to be loved by God—that is
when God can help us, if we just stop hating ourselves and
start loving and trusting the Lord. It is not the time to
pretend we have avoided the big sins, or to brag about
some of the good we may have done. Instead of trying to
convince God that we deserve his mercy, simply agree that
you need his help. God loves sinners who know they need
his forgiveness and don’t deserve it.
But maybe you have already been forgiven and wonder
what’s next. Remember the ones you would not expect to
support Jesus: The centurion supervising his crucifixion
proclaims him Son of God. A member of the Sanhedrin
gives Jesus a burial place. The women who were there to
the end. These were people who did not claim to be
worthy, just did what they could to show their love. Ask
Jesus each morning when you wake up, “What can I do for
you today?” and do what you can.

Aquarium on April 14. An amazing underworld ocean
tunnel with thousands of sea creatures. There are places to
sit for a rest. We will lunch on our own at Fritz's, a
hamburger and shake place where your lunch is delivered
to you by a toy train. Cost is $27.00, due in the office by
March 31. Bus will leave the church at 10:15am.
Congratulations to our Knight and Family of the Year
winners which were elected by ballot by the members.
Knight of the Year - Paul Danaher was selected as Knight
of the Year. Paul volunteers on a regular basis for the
Council meal functions such as: the Lenten Fish Fries,
Italian Dinners, and Tootsie Roll Drives. He is the
coordinator for Lifesavers Sunday and the Baby Bottle
Boomerang, which solicits donations and raises money
for local Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Paul also coordinates
for the Tri-Annual Serve-Coordinate-A-Meal for 250300 homeless men at City Union Mission located in
downtown Kansas City, MO. Paul is also the “Pro-Life
Minute” speaker at the monthly Knights meetings. Paul
is also an active recruiter, and has recruited several
Knights over the last few years, as well as convinced
some to transfer to our Council so they will be more
active Knights.
MINISTRY OF CARE
Whatsoever you do to the least of My people,
that you do unto Me.”
Contact Jean in the office 681-3348 for information on
these support ministries and other available resources.
Quick link!!!
There is a new link on the website so you can quickly view
and sign up to help with whatever needs are currently being
filled by Ascension. Go to kcascension.org and scroll to
below the opening pictures to “Quick Links” and see how
you and/or your family can be of service. Anytime your
kids help with: cooking meals or desserts, shop for
ingredients, or serve the homeless and hungry can be
counted as volunteer hours!!! Contact Jean in the office
with any questions.
Family of the Year - Lenny and Mary Lausten and
family. Lenny and his wife have been active through the
Parish, Diocese and Knights Council in multiple
activities.
Mary and their daughters assist with
procurement and delivery of food needed for Knights'
sponsored events, helps with dessert preparation and
distribution at Italian dinners. Leonard is active in
multiple Knights and parish events. In addition to all this,
Lenny is responsible for managing a Knight’s team that
plans, prepares, and serves meals to homeless
organizations our Council supports including: several
large Parish and Diocesan-wide events that feed multiple
groups ranging from: Youth Ministry, Kairos retreats,
wine-tasting fundraisers for the Villa St. Francis Nursing
Home, Men Under Construction breakfasts and
luncheons, Parish Picnic Dinners, Parish Italian Dinners,
Parish Fish Fry’s, Knights Barbecue and Smoking
contests, and the St. Philippine Duchense Fourth Degree
Assembly Winter Formal Dinner and Dance. These
activities involve feeding groups from as small as 15
people to groups over 1,100 people.
The Good Samaritan Fund at Ascension is for the benefit
of families or individuals in our parish who find
themselves in need. As a Stewardship Parish, the Good
Samaritan Fund is supported through tithing, along with
gifts from individuals, parish groups and Mardi Gras
funds. We encourage anyone who needs help to contact Fr.
Tom.
Juan Ana Coffee - Supports International Missions
For sale in the parish office anytime! Juan Ana Coffee is
part of San Lucas Mission in Guatemala. It is “direct
trade” coffee, which ensures that producers (workers) earn
a fair price for their product, are included in the decision
making process, and are treated with respect and dignity.
By supporting Juan Ana Coffee, or any other fair trade
products, we are keeping with the pillars of Catholic Social
Teaching. Pope Paul VI said, “Let each one examine his
conscience…is he prepared to support, out of his own
pocket, works and undertakings in favor of the most
destitute? Is he ready to pay a higher price for imported
goods so that the producer may be more justly rewarded?”
So, tomorrow or this morning, when you are brewing your
coffee, take a minute to think about the people you have
impacted by buying fair trade or direct trade coffee.
Congratulations to the Knights of Columbus Substance
Abuse and Alcohol Awareness Poster contest winners.
