& its history
G
erald Holtom designed the peace symbol in 1958.
His intention was to create a symbol for the DAC
(Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear
War). Holton designed the symbol using the naval
code of semaphore, which is a flag signaling
system used in the Navy. He used the code
letters for N and D. The reason the D is
over the N is symbolize “anti-military.” It
has since transformed in meaning. The
symbol made its way to America in the
1960’s, where activists used it as the
piece symbol.
Holtom’s design is one of many symbols
recognized as a piece sign. The V sign
hand gesture, where an individual
raises his/her index and middle finger,
is also widely used today. But before
this gesture signified “piece,” it was
used by troops in World War II to signify
“victory.” President Richard Nixon
famously used the gesture to signify
victory during the Vietnam War. Another
commonly used peace symbol is a dove.
The dove goes back to the story of Noah and
his Arc, where the dove represented love and
peace to the animals finding a new home.

What is the Living Local Project?
It is a volunteer led effort to inspire
residents to live a more locally based,
sustainable lifestyle. It began life as an
ideadiscussed at a Create Huntington
meeting in 2011.
Create Huntington is a grassroots
support net work that enpowers people to effect positive change in their
community, as part of an effort to help
the region grow more successful and
inviting, innovative and thriving.
2015 Sustainability Fair
We decided that by hosting a fair centered around building a more sustainable
commuity, with local musicians, artisans, farmers, restaurants, businesses,
organizations, and government, we
would better inspire all to vie a more
locally based lifestyle.
